There was a time when the Denver Broncos’ defense was known as the “Orange Crush.” If DeMarcus Ware returns to form with his new team, he could single-handedly help today’s Broncos defense live up to its old nickname. Fans will get their first official look at Ware in his new uniform when the defending AFC champs host the Indianapolis Colts, Sunday, Sept. 7 on NBC. Forget the Peyton Manning/Andrew Luck rivalry; Luck’s biggest problem will be how much time No. 94 spends in the Colts’ backfield. After nine seasons in Dallas, the Cowboys let Ware test the free agent market by releasing him in March. The next day the Broncos, still reeling from their Super Bowl loss to Seattle, signed the seven-time Pro Bowler defensive end/ linebacker to a three year, $30 million contract. Ware has no doubt been one of the best in all of football over the past decade. In Dallas, he played through injuries in 2012 and remained productive. His numbers tapered off in ’13 when he recorded only six sacks while sacks playing for one of the worst defenses in the NFL. Ware has indicated that he’s as healthy now as he’s been in years. If his preseason work means anything, he’s shown that even at age 32 he can still move off the line of scrimmage as well as ever. That’s bad news for opposing quarterbacks and good news for Denver fans looking for some excitement on both sides of the football.

“NFL Thursday Night Football” is a very big deal for CBS. In more ways than one. One only needs to see the ads sporting such stars as Mark Harmon and Julianna Margulies with lampblack under their eyes to know how much the franchise means to the network ... which is temporarily relocating one of its biggest hits, “The Big Bang Theory,” back to Mondays to accommodate the games. Reports place the price of the deal between CBS and the NFL in the area of $250 million. The first match-up, on Sept. 11, takes the Pittsburgh Steelers to meet the Baltimore Ravens. Jim Nantz, Phil Simms and Tracy Wolfson will call the game, as they will for the six subsequent Thursday contests. Another sign of what Thursday Night Football means to CBS – which will co-produce and simulcast the games with the NFL Network – was the July panel it assembled for television reporters in Los Angeles, boasting three of America’s top businessmen: Leslie Moonves, president and CEO of CBS Corporation; NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell; and Robert Kraft, owner of the New England Patriots and chairman of the NFL’s broadcast committee. Though CBS’ Thursday deal with the NFL initially is for only one year, “It is our job to show the NFL what we can do and how great it’s going to be and how great the partnership is going to be,” Moonves says. “We’re confident that after this year is over, they’ll sit down and, hopefully, give us a longer deal than that.” With the NFL Network owned by the National Football League itself, Goodell explains the aim is to “take what we had started on the NFL Network (and) continue to grow the NFL Network, but really create a greater awareness of the NFL on Thursday night in a franchise that we all will be proud of. And we were proud to pick CBS. The promotion of Thursday night, the commitment to the production value, the commitment to having their ‘A’ talent on Thursday night is something that was very important to us.” Kraft’s Patriots will play Thursday hosts to the New York Jets on Oct. 16. The Patriots owner reasons that CBS is doing “the heavy lifting, really, in terms of the announcing, the broadcast, their support people, (and) taking the best people from the NFL Network and combining it. We thought it allowed us to bring a bookend type of mentality to weekends in America, where people – by Thursday night, because of fantasy football and all the other things we try to bring as enhancements to the game – want football.”

on Darling has had a long-term love affair with wine extending from the early 1980s and his days as a rookie pitcher with the New York Mets to the present. He has fond remembrances of the La Cache that got him into wine, and he thought he’d died and gone to heaven when he tried his first French white burgundy. He liked to drink the expensive wines his veteran teammates could afford. So when his son Jordan was diagnosed at age 11 with Type 1 diabetes, he got the idea to put his passion to work for a good cause. In cooperation with Donelan Wines of Sonoma County, Calif., he released the Darling Reserve, a petite syrah, this summer to support Type 1 diabetes research. Though initially fearful the $45 per bottle price point might turn off the average wine drinker, Darling was heartened when the 150 cases sold out in about a month. Now it’s on to a bigger release. “I’m so proud of it because all my friends are winos in the nicest sense of the word,” quips Darling, an analyst on TBS’ Sunday games, “so I was apprehensive that I would make a wine that I hoped that they would love. And to a man and woman I’ve gotten such great reviews of it, so I’m very happy.” “It’s expensive enough to be a really good wine,” he continues, “and then also it’s not too dear, so it includes everyone. And I’m a big person of inclusivity. I want everyone to have a chance. You know, some people are going to buy a case; some people are going to be able to afford only a bottle, and I think that’s cool, too.” As for his own tastes, Darling says he has no preference when it comes to red or white. “I’m a food/wine guy, which makes me a red and white guy,” the 54-year-old Massachusetts native says. “I’m all about how the wine and food go together. I wouldn’t say I’m a huge drinker of wine. “If I go to dinner, I always ask the sommelier what wine is going to maximize the taste of the steak or whatever dish I’m having that night. And if white is recommended, that’ll be the glass I have. If red is recommended, that’ll be the glass I have, also. So I’m all about the combination of entertaining, food and wine, all of that mixed together. I don’t have any bias against – I only drink red, I only drink white, or as in ‘Sideways,’ I only drink pinot noir.” And when it comes to trying new wines, he doesn’t take advice from the Internet. “I’ve been lucky to have two or three mentors in my time that have taught me everything,” he says. “I’m not a Google guy. I don’t want to learn from the computer. I want people to tell me their experiences – from (ex-teammate) Rusty Staub to a friend of mine, (former Mets team physician) Dr. John Olichney, they are experts in wine and I’ve learned everything I know about it from them and it’s been a great experience. “I’m a person of discovery and acquiring knowledge, and wine is one of those things that teaches you forever.”

SAMCRO’s last ride is beginning. “Sons of Anarchy” – one of the series that has defined FX – starts its seventh and final season Tuesday, Sept. 9. Widely reputed for surprising, frequently violent turns, creator and executive producer Kurt Sutter’s saga of a motorcycle club in the fictional California town Charming, opens its concluding round with Jax Teller (played by Charlie Hunnam) sworn to avenge his wife’s murder. “I always had a sense of where I wanted it to go,” says the famously candid Sutter, “and I come in each season with a blueprint of what I want to do with the big sort of arcs and mile markers. And I’ve learned that, over seven seasons now, the looser I grip that idea, the better the seasons are. This season really isn’t any different. “I came in with how I wanted the season to end, which will be obviously the end of the series, and we’re heading in that direction. But things change with different story ideas.” This much is known: Drea de Matteo and Peter Weller have been made regular cast members for the show’s final

round, and Lea Michele (“Glee”) and Marilyn Manson have guest roles. Unexpected moves are likely to come from familiar characters, such as Hunnam’s Jax, who – backed by his SAMCRO allies in his plan to even the score – initially is unaware how close to home his wife’s killer is. “This final betrayal and tragedy in his life had completely demolished any potential of him trusting anyone outside of his immediate circle,” the actor notes, explaining he has been, “in all of the scenes, trying to kind of instill a little of that sense that unless you are my mom, my children, or one of the Sons of Anarchy, you better look out.” Katey Sagal (Sutter’s wife) plays that mom, Gemma, and the character who has her own conflicts to handle. “What’s coming out of her mouth and what’s going on in her brain are two different things,” Sagal says. “And as you’ll see as the season progresses, she’s made adjustments to the situation based on her basic instinct, which is to survive and to keep her family together. The camera does not lie, and I think the relationship I’ve built is one that (the audience) is going to expect to continue to see. I plan to be on that same journey I’ve been on with them all along. •How hectic do you envision Fridays being, since you also continue to coanchor “20/20” that night? I think it’s a huge opportunity to do longform reporting on “20/20” and bring some of that to “World News.” I think that’s one of the great things about ABC News as an organization right now. You would hear old-school stories about shows competing with each other, and you don’t see that anymore. You see every show celebrating the next one up, and I think that’s really important for a successful news division.

•What do you say about still wanting to get out from behind the desk and into the field as you anchor “ABC World News With David Muir” weeknights? I think the way viewers have gotten to know me is by watching me interact with people all over this country ... and, really, across the world.
