There is a popular myth regarding the Houston Texans’ J.J. Watt that goes something like this: In the year off between his stints at Central Michigan and Wisconsin, Watt worked as a pizza delivery guy and was recognized by a young customer who once looked up to him as a football player. The look of disappointment on the boy’s face so affected Watt that he retreated to his car and cried. The truth is, the youngster did recognize Watt, but the look only motivated him to get back on the field and be worthy of that child’s admiration once again. These days that’s likely not a problem, as the hulking second-year defensive end is arguably the NFL’s most dominant defensive player. Through Week 6, the 23-year-old Wisconsin native had a league-leading 9.5 sacks, to go with 32 tackles and eight batted passes, a total tied for eighth in the league and tops among nondefensive backs. He’s also the anchor of a defense that’s one of the league’s best and a big reason the Texans have won five of their first six games. Interestingly, there were questions regarding the Houston defense after incumbent DE Mario Williams signed with the Buffalo Bills during the offseason. But given Watt’s play in the season’s first half, it’s safe to say he’s provided more than ample answers. Watt can be seen in action Sunday, Nov. 4, when the Texans host the Bills in a CBS regional game.

Playing in the Playing the ‘WeddinginBand’
Maybe you don’t think of them while you’re out there boogeying to “I Will Survive” or doing the chicken dance, but those guys in the wedding band are people, too. Sometimes they’re very funny people, in fact, with entertaining lives, as is the case with the new TBS comedy “Wedding Band,” premiering Saturday, Nov. 10. It’s about four friends who spend their weekends as wannabe rock gods in their cleverly named group, Mother of the Bride. Brian Austin Green (“Beverly Hills, 90210”) plays Tommy, the hunky lead singer who still lives for good times and pretty girls. Then there are Eddie (Peter Cambor), the sometimes responsible husband, father and businessman; Stevie (Harold Perrineau), the studio musician looking for something different; and Barry (Derek Miller), the loose cannon drummer whose energy level puts Jack Black to shame. Green, who recently welcomed a baby boy with wife Megan Fox, says part of the joy in playing Tommy is getting to safely revisit (or “regress,” as he puts it) his own reckless youth. “It’s fun, it’s definitely different,” he says. “I get to the end of an episode and think, ‘Thank God I’m not this guy anymore because it’s so draining.’ I don’t drink anymore, I don’t go out to places anymore, I live a pretty easygoing life. I just don’t think my brain and my body could take it if I did anything other than this. I don’t know how people at 35, 40 still party as hard as Tommy does. It’s impressive, for sure.” The hard-partying lifestyle is key to how Green, 39, plays Tommy, but he says it’s not the entire character. Underneath all the hedonism, there is a core selflessness to him. “He’s perpetually hung over, he’s out of his mind, but he’s a good guy,” Green says. “That’s the endearing thing. He’s a drunk, and he’s a partier, but at the end of the day he works his a... off to do his job to the best of his ability and really make special days for people, and he’d kill himself trying.”

It’s midmorning, so Todd Carmichael, the adventurous host of Travel Channel’s “Dangerous Grounds,” premiering Monday, Nov. 5, is about to switch from regular coffee to espresso. Since his doctor persuaded him to reduce caffeine consumption, Carmichael is down to about 10 espressos and four French presses a day. “It used to be obscene,” he says. “I would have to not tell people the exact number because I was embarrassed.” His consumption, though, and his passion for coffee make Carmichael the ideal host of the eight-episode show, as he travels to Haiti, Bolivia, Borneo and Madagascar in search of the perfect bean. As co-founder and co-owner of La Colombe Torrefaction, which imports coffee and has seven cafes in New York, Philadelphia, Chicago and South Korea, Carmichael notes how the perfect cup of joe enhances any meal but stands alone so well. “Coffee and conversation around the table,” Carmichael says of one of life’s simple pleasures, “dark and thick and as much caffeine as you can possibly get into it.” In the pilot, it’s clear Carmichael – the world record holder for the fastest unsupported trek to the South Pole – likes a challenge. In Haiti’s warmer climes, he talks an old coffee farmer into allowing him to sample his crop. Carmichael travels with a portable lab and roasts, grinds and boils coffee. Anyone who understands how delicious a strong cup of black coffee is, and how it complements a meal or brings people together to talk, will find something in this show and be enchanted by his eloquence discussing coffee. “African coffees are an acidic coffee, like fruit,” he says. “They have a place. There is something about the roundness in the Haitian, more about the cup together with The New York Times, with a nice song playing in the background.” He came by his love of coffee and adventure naturally. In college, Carmichael worked for Starbucks, hauling sacks of beans. “I was a farm boy,” he says of his youth outside of Spokane, Wash. “At the beginning, it was like coffee chose me,” Carmichael says. “And later on in life I chose coffee.”

Hammond reveals hidden America in ‘Crash Course’

It’s a hot August day in Torrance, Calif., south of Los Angeles, and Richard Hammond is having a very good time. He’s busy shooting one of the episodes of Season 2 of his BBC America series “Richard Hammond’s Crash Course,” and he’s getting to pitch in on the construction of one of his favorite things: a helicopter. Airing on Mondays, the one-hour show has sent the “Top Gear” host across the United States, trying out new professions. In Season 1, he drove a variety of very large machines. But this time, he’s vying for “Dirty Jobs” host Mike Rowe’s self-assigned title of “perpetual apprentice,” but without the proviso that he always get dirty. But that doesn’t mean it’s all a dance through the daisies. In the episodes that have aired since the show’s Oct. 22 premiere, Hammond has been set on fire as a Hollywood stuntman, taken a turn behind the wheel of a New York cab and delivered a stand-up routine at the Gotham Comedy Club.
Hammond’s goal is to go in with just enough knowledge to be able to explain to viewers just how much more he doesn’t know. “I know enough about standing up in front of an audience,” he says, “because that’s my job, but not doing stand-up comedy. That was enough to get me to the position where I could then appreciate how good real stand-ups are, rather than being a gibbering wreck terrified at the prospect of facing a room full of people.” On this day, he’s at the Robinson Helicopter Company, the manufacturer of the secondhand copter Hammond bought in the U.K. He’s also getting to try his hand at the labor-intensive process of assembling one in a huge open factory floor open to the air and lit by skylights. “That’s the great thing about doing this show,” he says during a break. “You get to go to places you wouldn’t go as a tourist. I get to go to a lot of places most Americans don’t visit.”

How is it to have a comedy veteran on the order of Lily Tomlin playing your mother?
A:
I am just flabbergasted to get to work with Lily Tomlin. I’ve known her for over 10 years, and I’m a huge fan of hers, on and offstage. The way she will sit down and talk to a person, she’s so down to earth, and then to get up onstage and do what she does ... she’s just terrific. And she’s perfect for this part. She’ll come up with a line that has me rolling on the floor.

Soap Synopses The Bold and the Beautiful Bill and Brooke turned to Taylor for help after they discovered that Katie delivered on her threat to leave him and their newborn son. Later, Taylor found Katie at home but was unable to talk her out of her decision to disappear. As Katie began her new life in hiding, Brooke tried to comfort an angry and confused Bill. As newly appointed CEO, Thomas called a staff meeting at Forrester Creations, where he announced several major changes that were not well received by most of the staff. Taylor defended Thomas, reminding Hope and Rick that her son was now CEO and should be treated accordingly. Days of our Lives Bo admitted to John that he had resigned from the police force partly over the frustration of never being able to bring down Stefano, and John suspected Bo was secretly planning to continue his crusade against the DiMeras on his own. A romantic interlude between Sonny and Will was interrupted by Lucas, who told Will about Caroline’s situation. Nicole accepted Daniel’s proposal that they start a fresh life together in Hawaii in exchange for her not pressing charges against Jennifer, but she worried that sooner or later Daniel would discover the truth about her baby’s death. Jennifer pleaded with Daniel not to sacrifice his happiness for her sake, and in an emotional moment, Daniel blurted out that he loved Jennifer. Marlena ordered Sami to quit her job with Kristen after learning that Kristen intended to set up an appointment with Marlena’s therapist. EJ was livid when he learned that Nicole was not taking action against “the woman who killed our baby” and vowed vengeance for the child’s death. Will angrily confronted Lucas about his unhappiness with his son’s romance with Sonny. Daniel uncovered evidence at the hospital that made him suspect Nicole was lying. General Hospital Sonny and Michael had a long talk about all the hardships their family had borne, and Michael revealed he wanted to step up and take his rightful place in the organization. Connie tried to manipulate Trey into promising not to help Sonny commit her, then warned Johnny to prepare for war with Sonny.
