The Progress-Index History

Profile

The Progress-Index traces its origins to the Index, first published on July 4, 1865. Soon after the fall of Petersburg in April 1865, two local newspapers including The News were supressed by the Union Army. The News was edited by Anthony M. Keiley a well-known public figure, according to the 1960 book, “Petersburg’s Story, A History” by James G. Scott and Edward A. Wyatt IV. Meanwhile, Keiley not only had his newspaper closed, but he was imprisoned for three days in Castle Thunder in Richmond. After his release, Keiley soon started The Daily Index, which began publication on July 4, 1865. The newspaper, which acknowledged not Keiley but D.L. Williams as publisher, had a more conciliatory tone toward the city’s occupation army. In 1871, The Express became The Daily Progress, and in 1872 became The Appeal, which then merged with The Index. The merged newspaper became known first as The Index and Appeal but later The Index-Appeal in 1873. In 1888, Edwin F. Clements founded The Evening Progress. From those early papers only two remained in 1921: the Index-Appeal (1873) and the Evening Progress (1888). The papers made the news when they moved from the old plant on Tabb Street into new offices at 15 Franklin St., our current location. In 1922 The Evening Progress merged with the morning newspaper The Index-Appeal to become a daily evening and Sunday morning newspaper. On Sunday, Sept. 16, 1923, The Evening Progress and The IndexAppeal (the papers had by then combined) was renamed The Progress-Index. The Progress-Index was purchased in January 1997 by Times Shamrock Communications. In May 2004, Cindy Morgan was named publisher, making her the first female publisher in the newspaper’s history. The Progress-Index converted to a seven-day a week morning newspaper on Oct. 3, 2011.

The Bank of Southside Virginia History

Profile

The Bank of Southside Virginia traces its origins back to 1905 when the Bank of Stony Creek was chartered. In 1911 the Bank of Carson opened for business and in 1919 the Prince George County Bank began operations. These three local banks merged in 1933 and chose as its name The Bank of Southside Virginia (BSV). The first Chairman of the Board was P. B. Halligan of Carson, a local merchant and grandfather of John H. Clements, the current Chairman, and great-grandfather of J. Peter Clements, the bank’s current CEO and President. The Jarratt Bank was incorporated in September, 1939, and merged with The Bank of Southside Virginia the following month to expand the organization to four locations. This procedure was necessary in those days because merging was acceptable but branching was frowned upon by the banking industry’s regulatory agencies. After thirty-three years, the bank expanded from four locations to six in 1972 when it built two branches in the Petersburg area. The Rohoic/Edgehill office, just west of town in Dinwiddie County, opened in May followed by the South Crater Road branch in November. Greensville County was the site of the seventh BSV office. Built in 1979, the bank is now located on West Atlantic Street in the city of Emporia following annexation. A Financial Services Division opened in the town of Wakefield in 1986 and became a full service branch in April, 1990. A new facility for the Wakefield office opened in 2006. July, 1989, marked the opening of the ninth BSV office. Located in the town of Dinwiddie, on U.S. Route 1 next to the courthouse, this branch was the third BSV office in Dinwiddie County. The branch moved to a renovated building near the firehouse in 1998 and then relocated to a building acquired from First Union (now Wachovia) in 2001. A new building was constructed on Ellerslie Avenue for the Colonial Heights office in 1994. This branch is home to a full service banking operation as well as the BSV Dealer Division, BSV Mortgage Company and an office of BSV Financial Services. Acquisitions increased the bank’s branches to fourteen. In April, 1995, three branches in Southampton County, Boykins, Capron and Franklin, were acquired from NationsBank, now Bank of America. The bank’s Smithfield office was acquired from First Union, now Wachovia, in 2001. The fifteenth BSV branch to open was its Chester location in 2002, located at the intersection of Route 10 (West Hundred Road) and Harrowgate Road.

History In 1966 Ervin Strosnider brought his family to Hopewell, Virginia, to a Chevrolet dealership in the downtown area, where the Hardee’s now stands. It wasn’t long after that he envisioned a new dealership where only the woods would separate him from Fort Lee on the west side of the city. This is where the existing Strosnider Chevrolet at 5200 Oaklawn Boulevard now stands. Family owned and operated for over 40 years, our present building has survived a major fire that leveled the showroom in 1996, a hurricane or two and two building additions. Presently his son Chris Strosnider serves as Dealer/President with his brother Craig Strosnider as Vice President. Just as they did in the 60’s, the Strosnider’s operate their business with family in mind. Strosnider Chevrolet is on an ever constant quest to improve their service to their customers, employees, and community. We’re glad you found us. The Morris Cardiovascular and Risk Reduction center (MCRRC) was set up for the purpose of aiding people, young and old, to take control of their health before it spirals out of control. MCCRC helps people to identify potential risks and learn how to mitigate those risks before they turn into a serious condition.

E. Alvin Small Funeral Homes & Crematory History Alvin Small founded what is now E. Alvin Small Funeral Home and Crematory in 1952 on the Boulevard in Colonial Heights. Since the interstate had not yet been opened, the road out front then carried most of the East Coast traffic and, as was common at the time, the funeral home doubled as the local ambulance service. With help from Alvin’s dad, Edward, two brother, Herbert and Ralph, and several close friends, they set the foundation for what the firm is today. In 1990, Alvin’s nephews, Bryan Small and Louis Smith, assumed management and ownership. Services continue at the same place on the Boulevard and also at another location on Crater Road in Petersburg. There is also a crematory to service needs and special equipment for the cremation of pets. Families in the area still largely embrace a traditional approach with visitations and burials. Many often bring photographs, mementos and artifacts illustrative of a person’s life. A video tribute of personal photos may also be shown and favorite music played rather strictly hymns. Visitations are often a somewhat festive reunion of longtime family and friends. The public setting of the funeral home encourages friends and acquaintances that may be unwilling to visit a family at their home. The mere presence of a visiting friend conveys much to a family. You don’t need a lot to say. Funerals after all are a celebration of a life lived. Those who desire cremation are served by the funeral home’s own crematory, the first in the Tri-Cities. Cremation can be very simple or can be the culmination of a traditional visitation and funeral ceremony. Many people consider their pets to be a part of their families. The funeral home Forever Friends Pet Cremation Service to aid those who have lost pets. Pet caskets are available and separate pet cremation equipment is used. Families continue to be the number one priority for nearly 60 years and counting.
