The Siege of Petersburg Where Ordinary Americans Became Heroes
Captain Charles G. Gould
Sara Pryor
Private Lewis Martin
Just twenty years old, this Union soldier from Vermont was the first to break through the thin Confederate lines that had protected Petersburg for over nine months. Bayoneted in the face and back, he somehow survived and was awarded the Medal of Honor for his bravery that day.
Fearing for her safety in Washington, DC, Sara’s family sent her to live with relatives in Petersburg. They could not have imagined that she would endure the shelling and privations of the longest siege on American soil. Or, that she would write a remarkable and harrowing chronicle of the ordeal.
He enlisted with the Illinois 29th United States Colored Troops in order to fight for freedom. At the Battle of the Crater, he and 4,300 comrades fought in one of the most spectacular events in Civil War history. The wounds he suffered changed his life forever.
Dr. John Herbert Claiborne As the senior surgeon in charge of the hospitals in Petersburg, he labored throughout the 9 1/2 month-long siege to ease the suffering of Confederate soldiers and the people of Petersburg. He was laid to rest along with 30,000 Confederate soldiers at historic Blandford Church and Cemetery overlooking Petersburg.

The area is steeped in history from the earliest English settlers in what would become America. Just a few years after the founding of Jamestown in 1607, English settlers sailed up the James River in search of a more suitable place to live. Sir Thomas Dale found the perfect site 80 miles up the James River in today’s Chesterfield County. There he founded the Citie of Henricus, the second permanent English settlement in America, home to Pocahontas and the site where tobacco was first cultivated for sale in Europe. Other settlers soon followed. Indentured servants and enslaved Africans built the large, self-sustaining James River plantations that defined early Virginia. But it was the Civil War that largely came to define the region. The campaign that led to the end of the Civil War was fought here in the Petersburg Area. For nearly ten months the Union Army of General Ulysses S. Grant and the Confederate Army of General Robert

deprivation. The Petersburg Area is extraordinarily rich in African-American heritage. Enslaved and indentured Africans provided the labor that built colonial Virginia’s plantation economy. The area later became a hotbed of abolitionist sentiment and by 1860 Petersburg had one of the largest free black populations in the nation. Traditional shopping is nearby too. And when your day is done, you will find a smorgasbord of dining options. The Petersburg Area appeals to every taste from charming family-owned cafes, all manner of barbecue restaurants – a regional specialty – to pubs and coffee houses and fine dining in local and national restaurants. There are even restaurants here that were frequented by our Founding Fathers and where today’s travelers still savor the colonial atmosphere

And you won’t want to miss Appomattox Plantation and General Grant’s Headquarters at City Point in today’s Hopewell, Poplar Grove National Cemetery and the Five Forks Battlefield in Dinwiddie County.
The Petersburg Area also hosts two military museums at Fort Lee: the U.S. Army Women’s Museum highlights the critical contributions that women have made to the U.S. Army from the Revolutionary War to the present. The U.S. Army Quartermaster Museum documents the role of logistics in the U.S. Army’s successes from Valley Forge to the present day.
In addition to the national battlefield, there are numerous other Civil War sites in the area, including Pamplin Historical Park

Civil War History The Siege of Petersburg
The Civil War experience is the Petersburg Area’s biggest draw for tourists. It is the Civil War that forever put the area into the history books and left an indelible mark. In essence, the road to Appomattox Court House and the end of the war starts in the Petersburg Area. Before the war, Petersburg was a key economic and transportation center in Virginia, which made it an obvious target during the course of the war. It was the end of the war that the Petersburg Area became the center of the conflict in the East between the two leading generals of the war – Confederate General Robert E. Lee and Union General Ulysses S. Grant.
“The key to taking Richmond is Petersburg,” Grant said when his forces arrived at the eastern environs of the Petersburg Area in midJune 1864. Petersburg’s five railroad lines and key roadways made it an important target. If the Federals cut those transportation routes, Petersburg could no longer provide Richmond and Lee’s army with much-needed supplies,

equipment, and subsistence. Many believed that if Richmond fell, the war would be over. For a month in 1864, Union and Confederate armies clashed, marched, and clashed again. After each encounter, Grant moved farther southward and closer to his goals: the destruction of Lee’s army and the Confederate capital of Richmond. After the Federals suffered a disastrous defeat at Cold Harbor, Grant abandoned plans to capture Richmond by direct assault. Instead, he moved his forces south across the James River and through Prince George County. On June 15 he threw them against Petersburg’s eastern front. In a grim 10-month struggle – the longest siege in American warfare – Grant’s army gradually but relentlessly isolated Petersburg and cut Lee’s

supply lines from the south. The two armies dug elaborate defensive positions from which they fought, sometimes only yards apart. Grant made his headquarters at City Point (today’s Hopewell), a small port town at the confluence of the James and Appomattox rivers, eight miles northeast of Petersburg. Overnight, the tiny village became one of the busiest ports in the world as hundreds of ships unloaded equipment and supplies that the Union army used to wear down the Confederates. Throughout the siege, Petersburg’s residents endured the danger of shelling and the pain of hunger as supplies slowed to a trickle. Lavish lifestyles in the years prior to the war gave way to a bitter struggle for survival. On July 30, 1864, Union forces sought to punch a hole through Confederate defenses by tunneling under Confederate earthworks and exploding 8,000 pounds of gunpowder. The massive explosion at the Battle of the Crater instantly killed at least 278 Confederates and a giant crater—what has come to be known as the Crater—was opened up in the ground. It was more than 170 feet long, 60 feet across, and 30 feet deep. It became an instant death trap when Union soldiers charged into it and were met with a Confederate counterattack. When the violent hand-to-hand battle had ended, an estimated 3,800 Union troops were reported killed, wounded or missing. The Confederates suffered 1,612 casualties. Of all the battles waged in the region, none

saw more bloodshed than the Battle of the Crater. Nearly 150 years later, the giant cavity left over from the explosion is still visible on the grounds of Petersburg National Battlefield, where thousands of tourists come each year to view it. They also can explore the earthworks and trenches as soldiers might have seen them and take a look inside a reconstruction of the Union’s secret mine. Over the next several months a series of vicious battles in Dinwiddie County forced Lee to extend his thinlymanned lines for 37 miles in an arc below Petersburg. As his army crept south and west, Grant slowly gained
On April 2, Grant ordered an all-out assault, and Lee’s right flank crumbled at what is now Pamplin Historical Park in Dinwiddie County. A valiant defense at Confederate Fort Gregg slowed the Union advance and spared General Lee from possible street fighting in Petersburg. On the night of April 2, his army evacuated Petersburg by slipping north across the Appomattox River.
Petersburg’s citizens now realized their greatest fears as Federal troops marched in unimpeded and occupied the city. The back door to Richmond had been opened and the Confederate capital quickly fell to Union forces. Lee surrendered to Grant at Appomattox Court House just one week later. As Grant had predicted, Petersburg had been the key.
possession of all the key rail lines except the South Side Railroad. By mid-March 1865, Lee understood that Grant’s superior force would either go around the Confederate right flank or pierce the line somewhere along its length. With victory near, Grant unleashed General Philip H. Sheridan at Five Forks on April 1. His objective: the South Side Railroad. Sheridan smashed the Confederate forces under General George Pickett during the Battle of Five Forks – in what became known as “The Waterloo of the Confederacy.”
Did You Know? America’s Memorial Day Holiday was inspired by events at Blandford Church and Cemetery. Soon after the Civil War ended, Mary Logan, the wife of Union Commander General John A. Logan, witnessed a group of schoolgirls placing flowers on the graves of Petersburg’s Confederate defenders. Deeply moved when she saw the ritual repeated the next year, she related the story to her husband, who took steps that ultimately led to the observance of Memorial Day as a national holiday.

Civil War Attractions Petersburg National Battlefield Almost one quarter of the entire Civil War was fought in the Petersburg Area as Generals Lee and Grant wrestled for control of the railroads and supply lines to the Confederate capital in Richmond. Petersburg National Battlefield tells the story of the 10 month siege that caused the collapse of Richmond and General Lee’s army.
The 2,700 acre park contains a 16-stop driving tour that takes visitors through all four units of the battlefield: Grant’s Headquarters at City Point (present day Hopewell); the Eastern Front, where the initial assaults and the battles of the Crater and Fort Stedman occurred; the Western Front, where intense fighting continued as Grant’s Army encircled Petersburg; and the Five Forks Battlefield, a battle in which the outcome would eventually lead to the Confederates’ retreat and Lee’s surrender at Appomattox Court House. Each year, about 154,000 visitors come to Petersburg National Battlefield. While the history of the Civil War and the ten-month siege of Petersburg are the primary focus of the park, it also offers much more. From horseback riding and bicycle trails to the increasingly popular geocaching activities, the park offers residents and visitors alike a place to relax and to learn. Some of the activities that the park offers all year are daily ranger led walks and occasional auto caravan tours. Also throughout the summer on Sundays the park offers Segway tours.
16
General Grant’s Headquarters at City Point While laying siege to Petersburg, Grant established his headquarters at City Point, a small port town at the confluence of the James and Appomattox rivers. Overnight, the town and adjacent Appomattox Plantation became one of the busiest ports in the world as hundreds of ships delivered food, clothing and ammunition. While running the war from City Point, General Grant received many notable political and military visitors, including President Abraham Lincoln and General William T. Sherman. The Appomattox Plantation house is staffed year-round and provides an audiovisual program, tours of the house and Grant’s cabin, and self-guided walks around the point.
Western Front Driving Tour This driving tour explores where the fighting took place for the Petersburg and Weldon Railroad and the Union Army’s attempts to sever the South Side rail line. Poplar Grove National Cemetery, the final resting place of over 6,000 Federal soldiers who fell in battles from Petersburg to Lynchburg, is a highlight of the tour.
Five Forks Battlefield By the spring of 1865, the last remaining supply line into Petersburg was the South Side Railroad. On April 1, 22,000 Union troops under Major General Philip H. Sheridan attacked and defeated 10,000 Confederate troops led by Major General George E. Pickett at Five Forks, an important road junction that protected the railroad. The next day Grant assaulted Petersburg, which along with Richmond was evacuated that night. Lee surrendered at Appomattox Court House just seven days later. A visitor contact station is staffed daily at Five Forks Battlefield. A short driving tour is available to explore the battlefield in more detail.
Eastern Front Visitor Center The Eastern Front Visitor Center features exhibits and audio-visual programs that introduce the story of the siege and its impact on the course of the Civil War. A highlight of the Eastern Front is the scene of one of the war’s most spectacular events, the Battle of the Crater. In an effort to punch a hole in the Confederate’s defensive fortifications and capture Petersburg, a Union regiment from a coal mining region of Pennsylvania dug a tunnel 510 feet long under a part of Lee’s line. On July 30, 1864 they lit the fuse and 8,000 pounds of gun powder exploded as a prelude to a vicious battle.

On April 20, 1861, local volunteers formed in its square to enlist. On June 9, 1864, its bell sounded the warning for the local militia to meet the advancing Union cavalry. During the Siege, soldiers from both sides could see the courthouse clock from the

The first enslaved blacks were brought here in 1732 to work tobacco, and it became its own town 20 years later. In 1993, the island and its residents bounced back from a devastating tornado. Pamplin Historical Park
Pamplin Historical Park’s acclaimed National Museum of the Civil War Soldier features the stories of 13 soldiers, including black soldier Sgt. Alexander H. Newton of the 29th Connecticut Infantry. The Field Quarter is one of America’s finest slave life exhibits. Reproduction cabins, outbuildings and a garden simulate the meager living conditions of field slaves and their families. A frame cabin houses the thoughtprovoking video “Slavery In America: Viewpoints of the 1850s” which illustrates some of the common opinions Americans held about slavery.
Petersburg National Battlefield The National Park Service’s Petersburg National Battlefield is a 2,700 acre park that preserves and interprets the sites of the 10month-long Siege of Petersburg. A brochure titled, “African-Americans at Petersburg” highlights the actions of the 850 slaves and free blacks who helped build the Confederate fortifications around Petersburg and the 7,800 U.S. Colored Troops who fought and died in the campaign, including the famous Battle of the Crater. Most who died are buried at the Park Service’s Poplar Grove National Cemetery in Dinwiddie County. The brochure is free. The National Park Service also conducts periodic guided walking tours of African-American sites. See page 16 for more information about Petersburg National Battlefield.
Petersburg: The Underground Railroad & the Struggle for Freedom This brochure and walking tour map is a guide to discovering 28 sites in Old Towne Petersburg tied to African-American history and the Underground Railroad. Among the highlights is the former home of slave Elizabeth Keckly, who became Mary Todd Lincoln’s seamstress and closest friend. She toured Petersburg with President and Mrs. Lincoln just days before the President was assassinated in Washington, DC. The brochure and map are available free at the Petersburg Visitor Center, 19 Bollingbrook St., Petersburg, VA 23803; 804-733-2400.
Did You Know? The African Colonization Movement was especially strong in this region. Petersburg resident Joseph Jenkins Roberts became the first president of Liberia, the African Nation established by the Colonization Society.
Hopewell’s African-American Tour Guide
At the Banks House visitors may experience the rare opportunity to view an original slave structure. The kitchen and slave quarter dates to the 1840s and served as a kitchen, laundry and living quarter for house slaves and their families. See page 18 for more information about Pamplin Historical Park.

Civil Rights in Education Heritage Trail Our nation’s free public education system was born here in the Petersburg Area. It was along the sleepy back roads of a few rural counties that African-Americans, Native Americans and women earned the right to an education that was equal to that of white males. Fort Lee, an army base located off state Route 36 between Interstates 95 and 295, is near the end of a massive expansion that has nearly doubled the size of the military base. More than $1.2 billion in construction has turned the base into the logistics capital of the world. Major Army commands have moved to Fort Lee or are in the process of moving, including the Army Ordnance Center and Schools from Aberdeen Proving Grounds in Maryland; the Munitions, Electronics and Maintenance Center from Redstone Arsenal in Alabama; and the Transportation School from Fort Eustis in Newport News. Construction has included a new Army Logistics University and an Army Ordnance campus, a Sustainment Center of Excellence headquarters building, Tactical Support Equipment Department, one of the Army’s largest dining facilities and barracks for incoming soldiers. The expansion of Fort Lee has resulted in the doubling of the post population to about 45,000 people. Fort Lee, while still retaining its history as a Quartermaster garrison, is much more now. There are several sites of interest to civilians and military buffs alike on the installation. A valid driver’s license, vehicle registration and proof of insurance is required to enter post.

Richard Bland College of the College of William & Mary Founded in 1960, Richard Bland College of The College of William and Mary in Virginia is the junior college of the Commonwealth. The College offers a traditional curriculum in the liberal arts and sciences leading to the associate degree and other programs appropriate to a junior college. The curriculum allows its 1,600 students to acquire junior status before transferring to a four-year college or to pursue expanded career opportunities. In 2008, two two residence halls were opened that made Richard Bland the only twoyear college in Virginia with on-campus student housing. Also, the college has completed a major renovation of its library and student center, added a health center, expanded its bookstore and recently opened a $19 million, 52,000-square-foot building for biology, mathematics, chemistry, computer science and physics classrooms, as well as a faculty and student lounge. It is the first academic building to be constructed on the Richard Bland College campus in four decades. 11301 Johnson Road • Petersburg, VA 23805 • 804-862-6100 • www.rbc.edu
