HISTORY WAS MADE HERE

O

ne-hundred and fifty years ago, the Petersburg Area played a pivotal role in the final chapter of the Civil War.

For nearly a year - from June 1864 to April 1865 the main theater of battle in the Civil War was in the Petersburg Area. The final major campaign of the Civil War was fought here as Confederate General Robert E. Lee and his Army of Northern Virginia tried to hold off the advancing Union Army of the Potomac under General Ulyssess S. Grant. The Siege of Petersburg was the longest military event of the Civil War. The siege saw nearly 70,000 casualties, the suffering of citizens who survived daily bombardment and deprivation and featured thousands of U.S. Colored Troops in the midst of the fighting. At the end of the siege, Grant was able to cut off all of Petersburg’s supply lines to the Confederate capital of Richmond, forcing Lee to retreat and ensuring the fall of Richmond. A week after retreating from Petersburg, Lee would surrender at Appomattox Court House, in essence ending the Civil War.

t is the Civil War that forever put the Petersburg Area into the history books and left an indelible mark. In essence, the road to Appomattox Court House and the end of the war started in the Petersburg Area. Petersburg’s position as a key economic and transportation center in Virginia made it an obvious target during the course of the war and by 1864 it was the center of the conflict in the East between the two leading generals – Confederate General Robert E. Lee and Union General Ulysses S. Grant. “The key to taking Richmond is Petersburg,” Grant said when his forces arrived at the eastern environs of the Petersburg Area in mid-June 1864. Petersburg’s five railroad lines and key roadways made it an important target. If the Federals cut those transportation routes, Petersburg could no longer provide Richmond and Lee’s army with much-needed supplies and equipment. Many believed that if Richmond fell, the war would be over. For a month in 1864, Union and Confederate armies

clashed, marched, and clashed again. After each encounter, Grant moved farther southward and closer to his goals: the destruction of Lee’s army and the Confederate capital of Richmond. After the Federals suffered a disastrous defeat at Cold Harbor, Grant abandoned plans to capture Richmond by direct assault. Instead, he moved his forces south across the James River and through Prince George County. On June 15, he threw them against Petersburg’s eastern front. In a grim nearly 10-month struggle – the longest siege on American soil – Grant’s army gradually but relentlessly isolated Petersburg and cut Lee’s supply lines from the south. The two armies dug elaborate defensive positions from which they fought - sometimes only yards apart. Throughout the siege, Petersburg’s residents endured the danger of shelling and the pain of hunger as supplies slowed to a trickle. On July 30, 1864, Union forces sought to punch a hole through Confederate defenses by tunneling

under Confederate earthworks and exploding 8,000 pounds of gunpowder. The massive explosion at the Battle of the Crater instantly killed at least 278 Confederates and a giant cavity —what has come to be known as the Crater—was opened up in the ground. It was more than 170 feet long, 60 feet across and 30 feet deep. It became an instant death trap when Union soldiers charged into it and were met with a Confederate counterattack. When the violent handto-hand battle had ended, an estimated 3,800 Union troops were reported killed, wounded or missing. The Confederates suffered 1,612 casualties. Of all the battles waged in the region, none saw more bloodshed than the Battle of the Crater. Nearly 150 years later, the giant cavity left over from the explosion is still visible on the grounds of Petersburg National Battlefield – Eastern Front Visitor Center, where visitors can explore the earthworks and trenches as soldiers might have seen them and take a look inside a reconstruction of the Union’s secret mine.

defense at Confederate Fort Gregg slowed the Union advance and spared General Lee from possible street fighting in Petersburg. On the night of April 2, Lee’s army evacuated Petersburg by slipping north across the Appomattox River. Petersburg’s citizens now realized their greatest fears as Federal troops marched in unimpeded and occupied the city. The back door to Richmond had been opened and the Confederate capital quickly fell to Union forces. Lee surrendered to Grant at Appomattox Court House just one week later. As Grant had predicted, Petersburg had been the key.

In late 1864 and early 1865, a series of vicious battles in Dinwiddie County forced Lee to extend his thinly-manned lines for 37 miles in an arc below Petersburg. As his army crept south and west, Grant slowly gained possession of all the key rail lines except the South Side Railroad. Grant unleashed General Philip H. Sheridan at Five Forks on April 1, 1865. His objective: the South Side Railroad. Sheridan smashed the Confederate forces under General George Pickett during the Battle of Five Forks – in what became known as “The Waterloo of the Confederacy.” On April 2, Grant ordered an all-out assault and Lee’s right flank crumbled at what is now Pamplin Historical Park in Dinwiddie County. Blandford Church and Cemetery Built in 1735 for colonial parishioners, this church was restored in the early 1900s as a memorial to Confederate soldiers. It is one of the few churches for which decorative stained-glass windows were completely executed under the direction of Louis Comfort Tiffany. The 15 stained-glass windows commemorate each of the 13 Confederate states, an additional window is of a cross and the other honors the group behind the effort, the Ladies Memorial Association of Petersburg. A guided tour of the church reveals its history as an 18th century Anglican house of worship, its eventual abandonment and fall into disrepair, its use as a field hospital during the Siege of Petersburg, and its restoration by the Ladies Memorial Association of Petersburg as a shrine to the South’s “Lost Cause.” You will also learn the story behind each window’s design and experience the amazing artistry, harmony and proportion of Tiffany’s work. More than 30,000 Confederate soldiers are buried on Memorial Hill in Blandford Cemetery — a vast majority are unknown. Across the street is People’s Cemetery, a 19th century African-American burial ground from the days when cemeteries were segregated. resident Abraham Lincoln visited the Petersburg area three times during the Civil War, including a last trip in March and April, 1865. Now, visitors can follow in Lincoln’s footsteps using a new brochure that highlights the regional sites visited by the 16th president. The new “Walk in Lincoln’s Final Footsteps” tour takes visitors into the life and experiences of what Lincoln saw and felt while in the region - including his last trip during two of the last three weeks of his life. There is a renewed fascination with Abraham Lincoln resulting from the recent release of Steven Spielberg’s Academy Award-winning “Lincoln.” Much of this movie was filmed in Old Towne Petersburg, which was also a film location for the National Geographic production, “Killing Lincoln”, and PBS’ “The Abolitionists.” A walk through historic Old Towne is a walk through a real movie set as many of the buildings are recognizable from these productions. President Lincoln, accompanied by his wife, Mary, son Tad, and Elizabeth Keckley, born a slave in Dinwiddie County who became a friend and confidante of Mrs. Lincoln, arrived for his third visit aboard a steamship, The River Queen, docking at City Point at the confluence of the James and Appomattox rivers in what is now Hopewell. During the siege, it became one of the busiest ports in the world as hundreds of ships served the Union Army. This was the location of General Grant’s headquarters, a small log cabin where the president and his general presided over the end of the Civil War. Grant’s Cabin is the only remaining Civil War log cabin still in existence in the United States. During his time at City Point, President Lincoln walked the battlefields in Dinwiddie, Chesterfield and Prince George, visited the wounded and dying soldiers in military field hospitals, and rode through the streets of Petersburg. Less than a week after returning to Washington, President Lincoln was dead. “Walk in Lincoln’s Final Footsteps” incorporates technology allowing visitors to utilize QR codes and their smart devices to access dynamic videos and actually experience the significance of the sites. More information is available at www. walkinlincolnsfinalfootsteps.com or by calling (804) 861-1666.

Other Things To Do

AFRICAN-AMERICAN HISTORY

The Petersburg Area of Virginia has an extraordinarily rich African-American heritage that dates from the earliest English settlers in the 1600s to the Civil Rights movement in the 1960s.

Colonial African-American History

In the 1600s, English colonists sailed up the James and Appomattox rivers, and built settlements alongside Native Americans and brought with them their indentured servants and slaves as laborers. In the 1700s, more enslaved Africans entered Virginia at Bermuda Hundred, in today’s Chesterfield County, than at any other place in Virginia. By 1860 Petersburg had one of the largest free African-American populations of any Virginia city, and proportionally, one of the largest in the nation.

Civil War and Reconstruction

During the Civil War, African-Americans both built the Confederate fortifications that protected Petersburg and distinguished themselves in attacking those fortifications with the Union Army as U.S. Colored Troops. African-American troops captured City Point from which Union General Grant directed the Siege of Petersburg. In the 1880s, free blacks in the Petersburg Area aligned themselves with former Confederate General Billy Mahone, who helped found Virginia’s first public college for African-Americans, The Virginia Normal and Collegiate Institute, now known as Virginia State University, located in the village of Ettrick in Chesterfield County.

Jim Crow and Civil Rights

The conservative Democratic political machine that arose to rid Virginia of African-American political influence lasted for eight decades and established the pattern of Jim Crow segregation laws in Virginia. Its power was finally broken and Jim Crow was ended by the Civil Rights Movement in the 1950s and 1960s. The Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. visited the area repeatedly, culminating in a major speech at Virginia State University on July 2, 1965.

A frame cabin houses the thought-provoking video “Slavery In America: Viewpoints of the 1850s” that illustrates some of the common opinions Americans held about slavery. At the Banks House visitors may experience the rare opportunity to view an original slave structure. The kitchen and slave quarter dates to the 1840s and served as a kitchen, laundry and living quarter for house slaves and their families. See page 16 for more information about Pamplin Historical Park.
