The Siege of Petersburg

t is the Civil War that forever put the Petersburg Area into the history books and left an indelible mark. In essence, the road to Appomattox Court House and the end of the war started in the Petersburg Area. Petersburg’s position as a key economic and transportation center in Virginia made it an obvious target during the course of the war and by 1864 it was the center of the conflict in the East between the two leading generals – Confederate General Robert E. Lee and

Union General Ulysses S. Grant. Petersburg’s five railroad lines and key roadways made it an important target. If the Federals cut those transportation routes, Petersburg could no longer provide Richmond and Lee’s army with much-needed supplies and equipment. Grant abandoned plans to capture Richmond by direct assault. Instead, he moved his forces south across the James River and through Prince

George County. On June 15, he threw them against Petersburg’s eastern front. In a grim nearly 10-month struggle – the longest siege on American soil – Grant’s army gradually but relentlessly isolated Petersburg and cut Lee’s supply lines from the south. The two armies dug elaborate defensive positions from which they fought - sometimes only yards apart. Throughout the siege, Petersburg’s residents endured the danger of shelling and the pain of hunger as supplies slowed to a trickle. On April 2, Grant ordered an all-out assault

and Lee’s right flank crumbled at what is now Pamplin Historical Park in Dinwiddie County. A valiant defense at Confederate Fort Gregg slowed the Union advance and spared General Lee from possible street fighting in Petersburg. On the night of April 2, Lee’s army evacuated Petersburg by slipping north across the Appomattox River. The back door to Richmond had been opened and the Confederate capital quickly fell to Union forces. Lee surrendered to Grant at Appomattox Court House just one week later.

WESTERN FRONT DRIVING TOUR

Petersburg National Battlefield comprises four locations that tell the story of the 10-month siege. The 2,700 acre park contains a 16-stop driving tour that takes visitors through the four units of the battlefield: Grant’s Headquarters at City Point; the Eastern Front, where the initial assaults and the battles of the Crater and Fort Stedman occurred; the Western Front, including Poplar Grove Cemetery; and the Five Forks Battlefield, in Dinwiddie County. The Park also provides trails for horseback riding and biking and geocaching activities. For tour information, hours of operation and fee structure, visit www.nps.gov/pete/index.htm or call the Visitor’s Center Desk at (804) 732-3531, ext. 200.

This driving tour explores where the fighting took place for the Petersburg and Weldon Railroad and the Union Army’s attempts to sever the South Side rail line. Poplar Grove National Cemetery, in Dinwiddie County, is the final resting place for over 6,000 Federal soldiers who fell in battles from Petersburg to Lynchburg, and is a highlight of the tour. Cemetery – 8005 Vaughan Road, Petersburg, VA 23803

GENERAL GRANT’S HEADQUARTERS AT CITY POINT AND APPOMATTOX PLANTATION While laying siege to Petersburg, Grant established his headquarters at City Point, a small port town at the confluence of the James and Appomattox rivers, that is now Hopewell. The Appomattox Plantation house is staffed year-round and provides an audio-visual program, tours of the house and Grant’s cabin, and selfguided walks around the point. 1001 Pecan Avenue, Hopewell, VA 23860; (804) 458-9504.

EASTERN FRONT VISITOR CENTER The Eastern Front Visitor Center features exhibits and audio-visual programs that introduce the story of the siege and its impact on the course of the Civil War. A highlight of the Eastern Front is the scene of one of the war’s most spectacular events, the Battle of the Crater. 5001 Siege Road, Petersburg, VA 23803; (804) 732-3531, ext. 200. 8

FIVE FORKS BATTLEFIELD By the spring of 1865, the last remaining supply line into Petersburg was the South Side Railroad. On April 1, 22,000 Union troops under Major General Philip H. Sheridan attacked and defeated 10,000 Confederate troops led by Major General George E. Pickett at Five Forks, an important road junction that protected the railroad. The next day Grant assaulted Petersburg, which along with Richmond was evacuated that night. A visitor contact station is staffed daily and a short driving tour is available to explore the battlefield in more detail. 9840 Courthouse Road, Dinwiddie, VA 23841; (804) 469-4093.

BLANDFORD CHURCH AND CEMETERY Built in 1735 for colonial parishioners, this church was restored in the early 1900s as a memorial to Confederate soldiers. It is one of the few churches for which decorative stained-glass windows were completely executed under the direction of Louis Comfort Tiffany. The 15 stainedglass windows commemorate each of the 13 Confederate states, an additional window is of a cross and the other honors the group behind the effort, the Ladies Memorial Association of Petersburg.

African-American History Things to Do

The Petersburg Area of Virginia has an extraordinarily rich African-American heritage that dates from the earliest English settlers in the 1600s to the Civil Rights movement in the 1960s.

COLONIAL AFRICAN-AMERICAN HISTORY In the 1600s, English colonists sailed up the James and Appomattox rivers, and built settlements alongside Native Americans and brought with them their indentured servants and slaves as laborers. In the 1700s, more enslaved Africans entered Virginia at Bermuda Hundred, in today’s Chesterfield County, than at any other place in Virginia. By 1860 Petersburg had one of the largest free African-American populations of any Virginia city, and proportionally, one of the largest in the nation.

CIVIL WAR AND RECONSTRUCTION During the Civil War, AfricanAmericans both built the Confederate fortifications that protected Petersburg and distinguished themselves in attacking those fortifications with the Union Army as U.S. Colored Troops. African-American troops captured City Point from which Union General Grant directed the Siege of Petersburg. In the 1880s, free blacks in the Petersburg Area aligned themselves with former Confederate General Billy Mahone, who helped found Virginia’s first public college for African-Americans, The Virginia Normal and Collegiate Institute, now known as Virginia State University, located in the village of Ettrick in Chesterfield County.

14

JIM CROW AND CIVIL RIGHTS The conservative Democratic political machine that arose to rid Virginia of AfricanAmerican political influence lasted for eight decades and established the pattern of Jim Crow segregation laws in Virginia. Its power was finally broken and Jim Crow was ended by the Civil Rights Movement in the 1950s and 1960s. The Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. visited the area repeatedly, culminating in a major speech at Virginia State University on July 2, 1965.

HISTORIC SITES AND TOURS PLEASANTVILLE SCHOOL This school, located in the Winterpock section of Chesterfield County, was one of the first public schools for African Americans in the county. It now serves as a community center for a local church but tours can be arranged by appointment through the Chesterfield County Historical Society of Virginia. (804) 796-7121.

POCAHONTAS ISLAND This tiny island on the Appomattox River is thought to be Petersburg’s earliest predominantly African-American neighborhood. The Pocahontas Island/ Richard A. Stewart Museum houses a private collection of

PAMPLIN HISTORICAL PARK Pamplin Historical Park’s National Museum of the Civil War Soldier features the stories of 13 soldiers, including black soldier Sgt. Alexander H. Newton of the 29th Connecticut Infantry. The Field Quarter is one of America’s finest slave life exhibits. Reproduction cabins, outbuildings and a garden simulate the meager living conditions of field slaves and their families. A frame cabin houses the thought-provoking video “Slavery In America: Viewpoints of the 1850s” that illustrates some of the common opinions Americans held about slavery. At the Banks House visitors may experience the rare opportunity to view an original slave structure. The kitchen and slave quarter dates to the 1840s and served as a kitchen, laundry and living quarter for house slaves and their families. See page 16 for more information about Pamplin Historical Park.

PETERSBURG: THE UNDERGROUND RAILROAD & THE STRUGGLE FOR FREEDOM There is a brochure and walking tour map which is a guide to discovering 28 sites in Old Towne Petersburg tied to African-American history and the Underground Railroad. The brochure and map are available at the Petersburg Visitors Center, 19 Bollingbrook Street, Petersburg, VA 23803; (804) 733-2400; www.petersburgva.gov.

CIVIL RIGHTS IN EDUCATION HERITAGE TRAIL Our nation’s free public education system was established in the Petersburg Area. A self-guided driving tour highlights these historically significant sites and tells the poignant and often explosive story of civil rights in American education. The brochure and map are available at the Petersburg Visitors Center, 19 Bollingbrook Street, Petersburg, VA 23803; (804) 733-2400, and the Hopewell Visitors Center, 4100 Oaklawn Boulevard, Hopewell, VA 23860; (804) 541-2461, or downloaded at www.varetreat.com.

PETERSBURG NATIONAL BATTLEFIELD Petersburg National Battlefield offers a free brochure titled, “African-Americans at Petersburg” that highlights the actions of the 850 slaves and free blacks who helped build the Confederate fortifications around Petersburg and the 7,800 U.S. Colored Troops who fought and died in the campaign, including the Battle of the Crater. Most who died are buried at the Park Service’s Poplar Grove National Cemetery in Dinwiddie County.
