Workers install new signs on the Golden Corral on Temple Avenue Monday morning. The old restaurant has been demolished and rebuilt on the same site.
Updated Golden Corral is expected to open by July 1 BY KATHERINE JOHNSON STAFF WRITER
T
hree new shopping and dining options, as well as a familiar restaurant that’s been rebuilt, have taken shape outside of Southpark Mall. Five Below, a retailer that targets preteens and teens with prices from $1 to $5, was scheduled to open June 20, according to the store’s website. IHOP, the breakfast chain known for its pancakes, celebrated a grand opening on June 17. Firehouse Subs, which cur-
rently has over 770 locations, opened on June 9. Golden Corral, a buffet restaurant which previously existed but is being rebuilt in the same location, is scheduled to open next week. George Schanzenbacher, planning director with Colonial Heights, said the new retailer and restaurants are positive and add options for shoppers and those in the city. He said the Golden Corral was a “very successful local business,” and will continue to be when the new site opens. Schanzenbacher said there has been a “major upgrade” from what was previously at the Golden Corral site, but the restaurant will remain about the same size. Billy Sewell, president of Platinum Corral, a multi-unit franchise operator, said franchisees are asked to update to the newest model. He said the restau-
rant should reopen June 28, but by July 1 at the latest. He said the restaurant will feature many changes and upgrades such as a “more expanded menu, a new interior, an international station, bakery and a sandwich creation station. The restaurant will have 530 seats when it reopens, 30 more than the old building. Sewell said he wanted to thank the city and bring back a nicer, newer facility. Andrea Melton, owner of the Firehouse Subs, said that business has had a warm welcome, especially from the fire departments in the surrounding cities and counties. “We’re just glad to be here,” she said. Melton said it seemed to be the right time to get in the market and the opening of the store was “perfect timing.” Please see BUSINESS, Page 3

OUR OPINION
A major windfall for VSU, other students in Va.
I
t is a financial windfall for Virginia’s college students — and the state’s economy — that is rarely seen. Electronics and engineering conglomerate Siemens awarded Virginia State University and six other universities across the state a $1 billion investment in software technology earlier this month in order to better prepare the next generation for the workforce. The seven schools were part of a deal with Siemens to give students the best tools and training through product lifecycle management. This means that students will have access to the latest technologies and tools to help them become more competitive in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics. The award was presented at the “Building the Future” event held at the Commonwealth Center for Advanced Manufacturing in Prince George. Siemens helped with the event sponsored by The Atlantic magazine to look at the state of manufacturing in America and the state of Virginia. One of the most pertinent issues was how employers, businesses and leaders in education could work together to improve manufacturing in the United States. All of them agreed that it starts with educating students when they’re young so that they can grow to like jobs in the STEM fields. “The pool of skilled labor is finite, and unless we collaborate with the community colleges ... we will not create a sufficient level to sustain the renaissance that you’re seeing in manufacturing,” William Powers, executive vice president and chief financial officer at Rolls-Royce North America, said. According to Eric Spiegel, president and CEO of Siemens Corp. U.S., the nation has too few people trained in the STEM fields. “Americans rank manufacturing second to last in their career choices,” he said. Among 18- to 24-year-olds in the U.S., manufacturing ranks dead last for a career choice, he said. Advanced manufacturing is taking root in Prince George County with the Rolls-Royce manufacturing complex that’s building state-of-the-art engine components. And the Commonwealth Center for Advanced Manufacturing, located next to the RollsRoyce complex is a growing partnership between private firms and Virginia universities on research and education on advanced manufacturing. And one of the closest beneficiaries of the Prince George hub of advanced manufacturing activity is Virginia State University in Ettrick. VSU received $105.6 million in advanced software that will support six technology-focused programs. The VSU award was part of more than $1 billion of in-kind software grants Siemens presented to manufacturing programs at community colleges and universities in Virginia. Siemens is a founding corporate member of the Commonwealth Center for Advanced Manufacturing and VSU is a founding university partner. The VSU software grant will support student research in Manufacturing Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Electronics Engineering Technology, Logistics Technology and Mechanical Engineering Technology. The software grant provides VSU students with access to the same Siemens product lifecycle management (PLM) software used throughout the global manufacturing industry to design, develop and manufacture some of the world’s most sophisticated products in a variety of industries, including automotive, aerospace, consumer products, medical devices, machinery, shipbuilding, apparel and high-tech electronics. “This grant allows our students to train on the cutting edge of technology,” said VSU President Keith T. Miller. “This software will allow students to see things from a different perspective and discover the possibilities in advanced manufacturing.” President Miller heralded the grant as a direct benefit of the partnerships CCAM was established to foster. “Organizations like Siemens and VSU have to work together to build the synergy we need to compete in a global environment,” he said. The grant is a great opportunity not only for VSU students, but students across the commonwealth. And it is another key step forward in establishing advanced manufacturing in the United States — and Prince George County will be at the forefront of that new industrial revolution.

Preventing sexual assaults is not about defending yourself To the Editor:
I read the article about Miss Nevada being crowned Miss USA in the June 9th edition and was dismayed to learn that she believes the answer to ending sexual assaults on college campuses is “women taking it upon themselves to learn how to defend themselves.” The truth is perpetrators of sexual violence need to be held accountable for their actions. Most sexual assaults on college campuses are committed by someone the victim knows and often trusts and many involve alcohol. This is not by accident. Perpetrators seek out women they see as vulnerable for whatever reason and then deliberately manipulate them. Sexual assault doesn’t happen because a woman didn’t fight back. This attitude only serves to perpetuate the myth that women are responsible for their own rapes. Rapists are responsible for rape. Period. Celebrating 25 years of exemplary service, The James House provides support, advocacy and education for people affected by sexual violence, domestic violence and stalking, to empower them to become healthy, safe, and self-sufficient. The only nonprofit agency in the Tri-Cities area accredited by the Virginia Sexual and Domestic Violence Action Alliance, all James House services are cost-free and confidential. Hackers present the greatest threat To the Editor: The greatest threat to our nation — and maybe the world — is greater than the most dishonest and corrupt administration ever as well as the left wing scare of climate change. It is the threat of skilled “hackers” from foreign countries such as Russia, China, and especially Iran who could “hack” into our power grid system and cut off all electrical power. Some — and maybe most — of our systems controls go back to the 1970s and have never been updated to prevent such an activity. It’s an unprecedented disaster waiting to happen. Imagine our country with no power at all. There would be no communications (cell phones and Ipads would be useless), batteries couldn’t be charged, you could only drive your car until it ran out of gas, there would be no air-conditioning, etc. We would be driven back to the age of fire and smoke signals! This raises the following question: Why isn’t Congress and the adminis-

It’s your life, get excited about it To the Editor: We have reasons to forget what we have been in the past. We have held the coats of those who stoned others. We have all done things for which we are ashamed and we live in the tension of what we have been and what we want to be. Because our hope is in Christ, however, it’s your life; get excited about it. We can let go of past guilt and look forward to what God will help us to become. Don’t dwell on your past. Instead, grow in the knowledge of God by concentrating on your relationship with Him now! Realize that you are forgiven and it’s your life; get excited about it.Move on to a life of faith and obedience. You can move on to a more meaningful life because of your hope in Christ Jesus. Sometimes trying to live a perfect Christian life can be so difficult that it leaves us drained and discouraged. We may feel so far from perfect that we can never please God with our lives. But this is your life; get excited about it! We use perfect to mean mature or complete, not flawless in every detail. Those of you who are mature should press on in the Holy Spirit’s power, knowing that this Is your life and you are excited about it. Christ will reveal and fill in any discrepancy between what you are and what you should be. His provision is no excuse for lagging devotion, but it provides relief and assurance for those who feel driven. It’s your life; get excited about it. Christian maturity involves acting on the guidance that we still have so much to learn. The instruction for us is to live up to what we already know and live out what we have already learned. It’s your life; get excited about it. We do not have to be side-tracked by an unending search for truth; you will one day experience all the special privileges of our heavenly citizenship because you belong to Christ our Lord! You are now excited because this is your life. You’re
winning the race and it requires purpose and discipline. The Christian life takes hard work. Self-denial and grueling preparation, our worship equips us to run with vigor and stamina. Don’t merely observe from the grandstand; don’t just turn out to jog a couple of laps each morning. Train diligently. Your spiritual progress depends upon it. This is your life; get excited about it! Don’t flaunt your freedom, go ahead and act in love so you do not cause a weaker believer to stumble. But always remember: This is your life; get excited about it. Louise W. Pegram Chester
Congress must act now to help veterans To the Editor: Congress must act now for our veterans. The Veterans Affairs scandal has excited veterans organizations all across the country demanding resolution of the atrocities noted in that scandal for poor leadership and mismanagement of VA medical centers nationwide. Investigative reports continue to show there is more than meets the eye: Deaths of veterans waiting for medical attention for months on end; illnesses that have worsened due to lack of attention. Our Congress and Senate and President Obama are on the bandwagon wanting answers. Why did they not take action many years ago when they received complaints from veterans? It was known well over a decade ago about mistreatment. Those complaints fell upon unhearing ears, now we have needless deaths that could have been prevented and illnesses that could have been better treated. America has some of the finest medical resources in the world, but to put those resources to work for our veterans cost dollars. Is it cheaper to bury a veteran than to provide proper medical care for those who fought for our Freedom? There is an active House Bill HR543, The Blue Water Navy Vietnam Agent Orange Act. There are 210 cosponsors, we need 218 co-sponsors to get this bill out of committee to the House Floor. This bill will become a milestone toward providing equitable VA benefits for thousands of veterans, saving lives and provide better quality of life. I urge all Americans to contact their members of Congress, and those in Congress who have not done so to become co-sponsors of this important legislation; it will also lead to other legislation for veterans. John J. Bury U.S. Navy, retired Media, Pa.
Prisoner swap was a bad deal To the Editor: Trading five high-value enemy prisoners of war for a spoiled Snickers candy bar is worse than selling Manhattan for some cheap beads. Maybe our crafty president wants the enemies of the United States to die laughing? What else could it be? Ronald C. Uehara Petersburg

Man shot, wounded in Colonial Heights Crime happened early Tuesday FROM STAFF REPORTS
COLONIAL HEIGHTS — A man was shot across the street from the city’s police department during a robbery early Tuesday. Police are searching for two suspects that robbed and shot the 51-year-old man while he was walking home from a convenience store. The victim was walking away from a convenience store near the Town Hall Shopping Center at the intersection of Maple and Franklin avenues around

Two black males approached the victim, one of them had a gun, and asked the victim for money and personal property, Ruxer said The victim and the two suspects had a physical altercation, which ended with the victim getting shot in the stomach, Ruxer said. The victim was then transported to the VCU Medical Center. Ruxer said the victim’s injuries are not life threatening. The suspects were still at large as of Tuesday afternoon. One of these suspects was described as a black male with short hair with glasses and dark
clothing, standing between 5 foot 7 inches and 5 foot 9 inches. The other suspect is also a black male with s h o r t h a i r, s t a n d i n g between 5 foot 6 inches and 5 foot 8 inches. Ruxer said Colonial Heights police are working with Chesterfield and Hopewell police to locate the suspects. Anyone with information pertaining to Saturday or Monday’s crime should call Crime Solvers at 804-748-0660.
City man who flashed middle schooler receives 15-year sentence FROM STAFF REPORTS
COLONIAL HEIGHTS — A city man was sentenced to 15 years in prison Monday for harassing and flashing a middle school MILTON student in September 2012. Justin
Andrew Milton, 27, was sentenced in Circuit Court on three counts of indecent liberties with a child. “This sentence reflects the seriousness of the offenses and will keep this offender off the streets for a number of years,” Commonwealth’s Attorney Bill Bray said in a statement Tuesday. Milton exposed himself to a 12-year-old girl three times as she walked toward Colonial Heights
Middle School, asking her if “she wanted some of this.” Other girls notified the school resource officer that they were being followed, and Milton was arrested by detectives that day. He pleaded no contest to the charges last September, and was being held without bond at Riverside Regional Jail. Milton is registered as a sex offender as of March 21 of this year.
