Intern representatives will be distributing paper copies of the PAT survey to businesses and property owners along the Boulevard/Rt 1. This survey will assist PAT in its on-going examination of new travel options that support and enhance the efforts of local Colonial Heights businesses, as well as its students and residents. The survey is not, however, a comprehensive review of all public transportation services that may or may not be desired in Colonial Heights. Participation in this survey is completely voluntary and the process will conclude on July 25.

iolet Bank is one of the most unique military sites in American history. The house, used by Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee during the Civil War and Maj. Gen. Marquis de Lafayette in the Revolutionary War, served as a headquarters for both leaders during their campaigns. On Saturday afternoon, the museum celebrated the 150th anniversary of Lee using the house during his 5month stay for the Siege of Petersburg in 1864. The day was filled with programs and events to commemorate the 150th anniversary of Lee’s stay from June to November 1864, such as displays from other local museums and battlefields, reenactors and a firing demonstration of muskets and an 1862 Gatlin gun. How long have you lived in Colonial Heights?
I’ve lived all my life in Colonial Heights — 63 and a half years now.

Petersburg is always special to me. A lot of my artwork revolves around the Siege of Petersburg and for me to have it up here, especially during the anniversary of the most famous battle — the Battle of the Crater — I’m actually quite honored. I’m actually going to be giving two lectures on the Battle of the Crater down at the Black Swan on the 26th of this month and the 2nd of August at 6:30 each evening.

What got you interested in art?
I can thank my mother for saving crayon drawings I did of Confederate soldiers when I was in the second grade. I have literally been combining art and history all my life. They’re my two greatest loves I think, besides

I want to do something to symbolize the end of the war and I’m not sure exactly what it’s going to be yet. I’m just kicking that around in my head right now and I want to come up with something or paint something before next April.

OUR OPINION
Immigration crisis briefly comes to Virginia
F
or a couple of weeks last month, the national story about migrant children flooding across the borders into the United States focused on Southside Virginia. Federal officials had planned to bring in hundreds of Central American children and teenagers to a temporary shelter at St. Paul’s College in Lawrenceville to ease the burden on shelters near the Mexican border. More than 50,000 children, primarily from Central America, have been apprehended at the Mexican border since the start of the budget year. The unaccompanied immigrant children were to be sheltered on the campus of St. Paul’s College in Lawrenceville, which closed one year ago amid a mountain of debt. The private campus is up for sale. Brunswick County Sheriff Brian Roberts said in an earlier interview that St. Paul’s President Millard “Pete” Stith had said the college was “toying” with the idea of taking in the children and it quickly turned into a done deal. “The community was just devastated,” Roberts told the Associated Press. On the town’s webpage, the issue of unaccompanied children was addressed in a series of questions and answers provided by federal officials. The children, for instance, would be vaccinated against communicable diseases and they would not be allowed to leave the St. Paul’s campus without supervision. The Q&A also attempted to dispel fears the children might have gang ties. The webpage also said the government was seeking a five-month lease with St. Paul’s. The problem was federal officials did not talk to the residents or public officials in the small Southside Virginia town about the plan. And when word spread about the proposed federal plan, a public firestorm erupted. The government put the Lawrenceville program on hold after a private agreement between officials from the now-shuttered St. Paul’s College and the government became public. Contrite federal officials apologized for the miscommunication and the plan — Aaron Smith, Marine Corps Veteran was put on hold until a public hearing could be held. Before the meeting, Mark A. Weber, a spokesman for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services told the Associated Press: “Absolutely, we feel we didn’t do it right here. “We’re here to listen to the community. We’re here to sort this out.” Needless to say, federal officials received more than an earful of criticism from upset residents. An overflow crowd packed into the 900-seat Brunswick High School auditorium in the farming town of nearly 1,500. The crowd heard immigration and refugee resettlement officials describe their botched plan to bring in children from resettlement camps in the South and Southwest. They said the relocation mission was a humanitarian effort to shelter children from Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras who are fleeing their homes by the tens of thousands to escape violence and poverty. But the townsfolk were not buying it. Dozens of residents lined up along both aisles leading to the front of the auditorium to voice their opinions, including Aaron Smith, 32, who said he is a Marine Corps veteran and did a tour in Iraq. “We will not be strong-armed by federal officials,” Smith told the Associated Press. “We will not be pushed around.” The crowd cheered his comments, and he received high-fives from the audience as he left. Later, Smith said townsfolk primarily objected to the way the planned shelter was handled, but also objected to who would be housed in the community. “We do not want illegal aliens in our town,” he said. A day later federal officials scrapped the plan to house Central American children and teenagers in Lawrenceville. Everyone concedes the federal government did a horrible job in communicating the proposal to the public. That miscue poisoned the well, so to speak, stoking further mistrust of what the government was planning to do. If the federal government had been up front about the proposal, asked for community input before finalizing the project, would the residents of the community been in favor of plan to house hundreds of Central American children and teenage at the closed college? It’s hard to tell. In some segments of our society, anti-immigration sentiments are growing. But others, such as in the faith-based community, say the politics of immigration policy should be put aside for a moment in order to deal with the humanitarian crisis at the border. We’ll never know how the public in Lawrenceville would have reacted to the proposal on its merits, because the federal government botched the rollout of the plan to house Central American children and teenagers in a small Southside town.
“We will not be strong-armed by federal officials. We do not want illegal aliens in our town.”

YOUR OPINIONS
A personal story on why I’m optimistic about America To the Editor:
One of the most frequently asked questions I hear from people today is, “Are you optimistic or pessimistic about the future of America?” I normally answer that I choose to be optimistic, and here is the reason why. Four and a half years ago, my father-in-law (called Spur by his family and friends) walked out of a Washington Nationals baseball game with my two grown sons, Justin and Jamie. As they walked away from the stadium, Spur felt a strong pain in his side. He perspired. He struggled to keep up. They were just walking to get a cab, and Spur couldn’t comprehend why suddenly he felt so much discomfort just walking alongside his grandsons. Two weeks later, Spur received the shocking news - he had stage 4 nonHodgkin’s Lymphoma. The doctor gave him six months to live. Then, the doctor said grimly: “We can give you treatments. But - they can be devastating. They will drastically alter your quality of life.” Spur faced a decision. So he held a family meeting with the doctor, as families often do in the face of difficult medical choices. I remember sitting in the room with Spur and the doctor, encircled by family members. I remember Spur announcing he would not take the treatments. I remember him sharing that he simply wanted to enjoy his last six months as well as he could. There was silence for a moment. And then, he went around the room looking each family member in the eye and asking for their opinions. His wife agreed with him. His daughter agreed. His sons agreed. Spur looked to the doctor and the doctor nodded his head: “Well, that’s what we’ll do then.” They all stood up to leave, but Spur held back, looked over at me, and commented on how quiet I had been through the meeting. “What do you think, Randy?” he asked. What would you say? I’m not a doctor. I’m not a wise old sage to give that kind of advice, the kind that could determine life or death. I did the only thing I could think to do. I looked at the doctor and simply asked what he would choose to do if this were his wife. The doctor paused for a moment and said, “I’d give her the treatments.” So I looked at Spur and told him, “I’d take the treatments.” Spur sat back down, looked at the doctor and said, “Give me the treatments.” Spur’s decision was simple. But it was hard. I share this story because less than a month ago, I walked out of a Washington Nationals game. Jamie was there. Justin was there. And Spur was there, walking beside me. He looked to me and said casually, “I have more energy now than I have had in 20 years. I feel better than I’ve felt in 20 years. They’ve reduced my medicine to the lowest amount possible.” His words hit me. Today, there are those who are willing to accept a dire diagnosis for America. They’ve made up their minds, and they’ve looked to their neighbors and friends and family, and they’ve all agreed. There are those who believe our nation is no different from other nations around the world. There are those who are willing to let our nation fall to an ill fate.

But what if we choose the treatments - the kind that might be uncomfortable or hard - and end up healthier than we’ve been before? On the front end, those decisions are never easy. Finding the way to turn our country around will not be easy. It will be tough. But, we have a choice. We can go quietly into the night, accepting a dire diagnosis. Or we can roll up our sleeves and choose to fight. Some may read this and say it’s just a story - that stories don’t give us the specific answers that we need to turn the country around. And that’s true. We won’t find bill language or groundbreaking policy ideas in life stories, or at least most of the time we won’t. However, sometimes the stories in our lives give us the purpose and inspiration we need to move forward. They help make it a little more bearable to choose the hard things that might make our lives uncomfortable for awhile. They help guide us towards the future. That’s why I choose to be optimistic. There is no other nation like America, and I believe that if, like Spur, we make the tough choices, we may just find that a few years from now America has more spring than ever in her step - and the world will wonder again how they ever doubted us. Congressman Randy Forbes R-4th District Chesapeake, Va.
Thanks to all who helped during his wife’s terminal illness To the Editor: There is a saying that goes like this: “The journey of a thousand miles begins with one step.” This letter is long overdue and the journey is well underway, yet it was a difficult letter to begin. My bride of over 36 years, Mary Elayne Venema, succumbed to esophageal cancer on Jan. 11, 2014, 13 months to the day after her diagnosis. There are so many people to thank for sustaining my wife and family and me during that time. I want to thank our church family at Mount Pleasant Baptist Church and especially all the volunteers that stayed with Elayne during the day while I was at work and helped her with her medications and her care. That number also includes members of my daughter-inlaw’s family. You were all blessings to us. I also want to thank all the remark-
able nurses and assistants of Medi Home Health and Hospice, who have the everlasting thanks of my family and me. For all those times when I called you, often between midnight and dawn during those episodes of my wife’s excruciating pain, you all always responded promptly, professionally and above all with love and compassion. I thank God for all of you and those in your profession who have chosen to care for His children as they prepare to enter His Kingdom. Let me advise anyone who is ever in a situation where they are in a terminal medical crisis. If you ever reach this stage in your life, or it happens to a loved one, and you or they reach a point where continued hospitalization offers no relief, that is the time to contact hospice. You will receive loving and professional medical care in the comfort of your own home under the watchful guidance of your own doctor, all in a more costeffective manner than in a hospital. As always, confer with your doctor, your health care providers and your insurance company. Please do not postpone this call if and when this time arrives for you. My thanks also to Elayne’s mom and all her sisters who supported us and prayed for us, particularly to those who stayed with us before she passed. I can’t thank my co-workers and management team at Mapping Customer Operations, DLA-Richmond, enough. You all supported me and carried my workload during my frequent and sudden absences from the office due to my wife’s treatments. Thank you, thank you, thank you. Most of all I thank my kids Stephen, Melissa and Phil for sustaining their mom and me through this journey and special thanks to Stephen who put his personal and professional life on hold for the last two weeks of his mom’s life to stay at the house with us, enabling him and me both to watch and sustain her around-theclock, 24/7. And finally I want to thank God for finally taking my wife home. During the last few weeks of her life, that was all she wanted - to go “home” - home to Jesus, home to her dad who we also lost to cancer over 10 years ago, and home to the Heavenly Kingdom where there is no pain and no suffering, the home where we will all one day be reunited. On Jesus’ last night with his friends before His crucifixion, He told them “Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me. My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. You know the way to the place where I am going.” Thomas said to him, “Lord, we don’t know where you are going. How can we know the way?” Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me.” John 14:16 My bride knew the way to the place where Jesus has gone because she knew Jesus, as I do. I pray that we all “know the way” and that one day, beyond this veil of tears, we will all be together again. Let us continue to serve each other until that day, for “to live is Christ and to die is gain.” Rick Venema Colonial Heights

Vehicle crashes into courthouse FROM STAFF REPORTS
COLONIAL HEIGHTS — A runaway Ford Expedition hit the main power box at the new Colonial Heights courthouse and knocked the power out to the building Wednesday, July 9. The courthouse was operating under emergency generator backup following the 12:20 p.m. accident and the courthouse remained opened due to a heavy docket in General District Court, Sheriff Todd Wilson said. It traveled from the car wash, across two lanes of traffic on Dupuy Avenue and through the field in front of the car wash before hitting the power box. Wilson said the employee had minor cuts and injuries to his head and was transported to Southside Regional Medical Center. There were no other injuries reported. There was no actual damage to the building itself.

Construction of office building on Boulevard approved BY LEAH SMALL STAFF WRITER
COLONIAL HEIGHTS — The planning commission approved the first set of plans to construct a two-story, 58,486square-foot office building, on the south end of the Boulevard, as part of an exchange that would lead to the completion of the Appomattox River Trail System. Following a unanimous vote by the commission on July 1, more detailed plans for the project will be submitted to the city engineer for approval
and the developers would have to apply for a building permit following that approval. The office building would be owned by A+ Properties Inc. and would be built on the 4acre site at the intersection of Archer Avenue and the Boulevard, a 0.08-acre parcel of which was sold to the owners by the city. In exchange for the property, the owners must grant a 50-foot river easement for the completion of the fourth and final stage of the Appomattox River Trail System. The owner would also be
responsible for stormwater management. During the May 13 council meeting, City Manager Thomas Mattis presented the details of the agreement between the A+ Properties and the city. The terms were renegotiated many times so that the city could ensure that the Appomattox River was protected and to prevent any property planned for the site from from being used residentially. • Leah Small may be reached at 722-5172 or lsmall@progressindex.com.

“He [Jesse] has traced his ancestry ... has quite a few relatives that fought in the Civil War and so he’s very interested in this kind of thing,” Linda said of her husband. The couple plan on attending other events in the future that commemorate the sesquicentennial of the war, since they live close to so much history. “... We’ve started making a point of going to different places,” she said. Harvie Christie, program director at the museum, said Headquarters Day is an annual event, but this year is a special celebration because of the 150th anniversary. He said it’s important to commemorate the Civil War, because if history is forgotten, the past can be repeated. “Our history is not always pleasant, it’s not always good, but it is what it was and those
who forget will repeat it. We each have our own heritage, good and bad. We celebrate the people for what they stood for, right or wrong. They had a belief system and they believed in it and they were willing to fight and die for it. That’s what history is.” • Katherine Johnson can be reached at 804-722-5154 or kjohnson@progressindex.com.
