Residents of Bobcaygeon and area were not surprised when National Geographic magazine named a houseboat vacation in our area of the Trent-Severn Waterway as a ‘journey of a lifetime.’ The magazine simply printed what many of us have known for years! With more rental houseboats than anywhere else in Ontario along our
very own Pigeon Lake, the possibilities are endless for locals and tourists alike especially when you add a 386-kilometre TSW to the mix. Let’s not forget two of the world’s highest hydraulic liftlocks and Canada’s Freshwater Summit in nearby Coboconk, the highest point of fresh water elevation from which you can circumnavigate the world by water.

The area boasts three houseboat rental operators with more than 50 houseboats available for rent. Ranging in size from 32 to 56 feet, there is something for
everyone: from the bare necessities to luxurious comfort and executive style. In addition, full training and licensing is provided by houseboat operators in the region. Two of our favourites are Happy Days Houseboats and Egan Houseboat Rentals.

Buckeye Marine
Although it is located in the small village of Bobcaygeon, Buckeye Marine is a big player in the boating, as well as surf and ski, industries. The company motto of “We care” hasn’t changed since Grandpa Tom Thompson started the business as a bait and tackle shop with boat rentals and sporting goods sales. The tradition continued on when Tom’s son-in-law Frank joined in 1958. Frank brought mechanical expertise with him to the company and expanded the business to include sales and service of boats and motors. Through the 1970s and 1980s, Tom’s grandsons Gary (who tragically passed away in 2013), David and Chris got involved in the business which resulted in a substantial growth in the sales and service departments. Together, they took the business to a new level in 1989 when they moved the marine business to the large boat sales and service facility on Highway 36, where it stands today. Their success is 10 Explore Bobcaygeon 2014

phenomenal, really, having been named top Canadian dealer in Boating Industry’s Top 100 Dealer Program every year since the program’s inception in 2005. In 1997, the business diversified when David opened ‘Buckeye Sports’ at the original location now called “Buckeye Surf & Snow”. He and his wife Monica have since expanded to three Buckeye stores that are an integral part of the core of downtown Bobcaygeon and a must-shop-stop for visitors. With the fourth generation of the Poole family now actively involved in the business, Buckeye continues to stay on top of what lies ahead in the boating world. They are committed to remain an innovative leader in their industry because they want to be the best they can be for their customers.

National Historic Site Lock 32
One of the best and busiest TrentSevern Waterway locks is located right here in Bobcaygeon. The Lock 32 historic site is a very popular stop for boaters and landlubbers alike. Built more than 160 years ago, it was the first lock constructed on the waterway and its swing bridge is the oldest. Its prime location, in the heart of town, also makes this quite a unique lock. Downstream of Lock 32, there is a long mooring wall and park that extends for several blocks before turning north to rejoin Big Bob Channel. There is a
boardwalk that extends further to the east. The park which occupies the hill to the east of the lock is a favourite boatwatching and picnic area for visitors and locals alike. Of late, the Bobcaygeon Docking Committee, an arm of the Bobcaygeon and District Chamber of Commerce, has indicated that it hopes to expand on the 200-feet of docking space it installed on the north Pigeon Lake side of Lock 32 in March 2013. It has been holding fundraising events to grow this waterfront attraction even more.

BOBCAYGEON SPLASH PAD
The new splash pad in Bobcaygeon opened June 6, 2013. The Bobcaygeon community really made this happen, with help from the Ontario Trillium Foundation, which provided a $73,700 grant. Nearby Bobcaygeon Public School raised an incredible $15,000. The splash pad, which shoots and squirts water from a variety of bright primary-coloured pipes, is located in Tommy Anderson Park on Dunn Street in Bobcaygeon, across from Kawartha Settlers Village.

Unlock the Summer Unlock the Summer, the official kickoff of the summer season in and around Bobcaygeon, is held in late May or early June every year. Whether you’re a first-time visitor, a returning cottager, or home for a visit, it is a fun event to attend – ceremonially marked by the unlocking of a large gold lock. Unlock the Summer started in 2002 to mark the reopening of the swing bridge over the Trent- Severn Waterway. Traffic had been rerouted for several months during construction, and when work was complete early that June, the whole town was ready to celebrate. Unlock the Summer was born. Since its inception, Unlock the Summer has been a fun-filled weekend. There are always retail and restaurant deals, boat cruises on Pigeon Lake, music, art and activities for kids of all ages. The Bobcaygeon Fall Fair Without a doubt, the Bobcaygeon Fall Fair is one of the best small-town fairs in all of Ontario. its 156th year in 2014. The fair is traditionally held the last Saturday in September although it starts on the Thursday prior. Highlights include the parade, demolition derby, truck and tractor pull and the Saturday night dance. Bikefest Bobcaygeon The Kawartha’s premier annual motorcycle event - Bikefest Bobcaygeon is again slated for the third Sunday in June. Roads are closed to accommodate this event and it is amazing to see rows of motorcycles lined up along Bolton St. for the Show & Shine. The event also attracts a slew of vendors each year. Horseless Carriage Museum
One of Canada’s most unique privately-owned museums sits nestled between Bobcaygeon and Fenelon Falls amid picturesque surroundings. The Horseless Carriage is a non-profit museum of early transportation and mechanical antiquities. It is privately-owned and operated by the Bennett family. The museum started as an attempt to preserve Canadian history and through the years, the collection has grown to its present size after the Bennett family decided to share their interests and collection with the public. From the stunning display of some of Canada’s oldest running cars, gas station memorabilia, curiosities and an 1890’s general store, it is an experience that will fascinate and educate. They also have a museum store featuring a selection of quality handmade crafts from leather goods to quilts, knitting, carvings, jewellery and primitive dolls. A collection of antique scales will tempt you to sample the abundance of old fashioned candies as well as maple syrup, honey and homemade preserves. • They are located at 1427 County Road 8, between Fenelon Falls and Bobcaygeon.

Other items of interest include the jail, water wheel, outdoor oven and the 1902 WOOT, an automobile that was built in Bobcaygeon. Open daily from May to the beginning of October, guests who visit will enjoy a self-guided tour of the grounds as well as a nature trail around the perimeter, which hiking enthusiasts will enjoy.

The Village hosts a variety of cultural, heritage and art organizations to promote and foster community spirit for cultural, educational, and recreational programs. They also hold many events throughout the year, including Settlers’ Day in June and Festival of Trees in November. Looking for a place to get married or hold a private function? The beautiful gardens and well-kept grounds offer a unique and rustic feel for any occasion. Kawartha Settlers’ Village is fun for everyone and all buildings are wheelchair accessible. Kawartha Dairy: Over 75 Years of Tradition & Quality A cottage country destination for generations of vacationers and cottage goers, those that have experienced a visit to Kawartha Dairy would certainly agree that summer just isn’t complete without a few Kawartha Dairy ice cream cones. Along with the Bobcaygeon outlet, other Kawartha Dairy stores are located in Minden, Lindsay, Bancroft, Huntsville, Peterborough, Uxbridge and Barrie. All Kawartha Dairy stores offer a full line of dairy products along with the company’s legendary premium ice cream. With over 45 flavours to choose from, visitors to the stores will no doubt agree their most difficult decision is deciding between all the choices available. The stores also carry a selection of frozen yogurt, sherbet and sugar free offerings, alongside ice cream flavours like Moose Tracks, Birthday Cake, Death By Chocolate, Banana Boat, Bear Claw and many other traditional favourites. The success of the company’s retail stores has spurred demand for the ice cream throughout Ontario, as Kawartha Dairy fans now crave that rich and creamy taste twelve months a year. Nowadays, their ice cream can be found at local shops in many communities and major centers throughout Eastern, Central and Southern Ontario. “In recent years, the demand for our ice cream has been overwhelming. Every week we have calls from retailers and scoop stands wanting to carry it because they have heard from their customers about Kawartha Dairy ice cream.” comments General Manager Blake Frazer. “We now have outlets selling our ice cream from Ottawa to Windsor.” Even with the increased availability of Kawartha Dairy ice cream throughout Ontario, the company’s heart and soul continues to be tied to cottage country. The Kawartha Dairy team is looking forward to seeing you at one of their stores this summer and would like to thank you for your continued loyal support. Kawartha Dairy. Proudly family owned since 1937.

Roadside vegetable and fruit stands, along with places to buy fresh meat, eggs, maple syrup, honey and baking, can be found across the Bobcaygeon and area throughout the summer months and well into the fall. In addition, the Bobcaygeon Farmers Market is just getting bigger and better as well. It takes place on Saturday mornings, between 8 a.m. and 1 p.m., at the fairgrounds. The Autumn also features local farms in Kawartha FarmFest, a self-guided driving tour of farm attractions in the area. And, local farmers’ produce is also featured in the 100-mile dinner held in Lindsay, usually in September. The best of Bobcaygeon supermarkets include Strang’s Valu-Mart, where you can find everything you need on your 26 Explore Bobcaygeon 2014

grocery list and more. President’s Choice brand, a deli, bakery and an expanded snack section make it a must-shop cottage stop. Foodland on Main Street provides meat and deli-selections and an expanded choice of healthy, specialty and dietary foods. Extended hours of service keep the store open 24 hours throughout the peak summer season. If you want to stop in somewhere for a quick bite to eat, there are plenty of choices. We would recommend Dixie Lee (which also does chicken and seafood catering). Another great choice is Luigi’s Pizza, which features homemade dough, wings, subs, salads, pasta and garlic bread. The Original Just for the Halibut Grillhouse is an iconic Bobcaygeon eatery. They have more than just fish and chips (although you can’t beat the fish and chips!).

The Bobcaygeon Inn is another must-stop during your visit. It offers a variety of experiences from its waterfront patio and licensed Tiki Bar to the indoor Riverview Lounge and Dining Room. The Full Cup Café features all-day breakfasts and homemade desserts. It has a lovely courtyard at the rear of the restaurant or you can sit out front and watch the world go by. Donatella’s Bar and Grill offers amazing Italian food on Bolton St. in the downtown. Reviewers consistently say their wood-fired, thin-crust, fresh local ingredient pizza is to die for. Their pasta dishes and everything else on the menu is superb. They are also known for a wonderful patio and friendly staff. It’s great place for couples and families alike.

Shopping Whether it is King, Bolton or Main, there is fantastic shopping in downtown Bobcaygeon. No trip to Bobcaygeon is complete without a trip to the iconic Bigley’s stores in town: Bigley Shoes and Clothing; Bigley’s Beachhouse, Bigleys Little Shoppe and Bigley’s Cottage Kitchen. Although, to be perfectly frank, the stores are often the reason visitors come to town in the first place. Bigley Shoes & Clothing has been a family-run business since 1911. They
feature one of the largest selections of shoes (more than 40,000 pairs) in Eastern Ontario for men, women, and children. You will also find hundreds of brand names in clothing and footwear for both men and women, bathing suits, jewellery and accessories. They carry more than 25,000 fabulous swimsuits in their amazing Beach House and, in 2013, opened Bigley’s Cottage Kitchen. While a lot of things have changed over 100 years, one thing has

There you will find Good Pickins, which opened last July, and features repurposed, recycled and reused home décor. In Fine Feather specializes in very vintage chic. And Nan’s Crossroads is the place to go for country home décor, antiques, candles and gifts to name just a few. All great places if you are looking for something for home, the office or the cottage. They offer a fresh, relaxed and comfortable shopping environment stocking a variety of items, including mirrors, lighting, centrepieces, prints, outdoor garden décor. Their merchandise
is intended to complete and compliment any room upgrade or renovation project. One of the newest Bobcaygeon retail outlets is Gigi’s toy store at 71 Bolton St. Owner Louise Lavere opened Nov. 1, 2013 to fulfill a niche for families living in, or visiting, the village. It is also a great place for local grandparents to shop for their grandchildren. The store carries items for infants to pre-schoolers and school-aged children right up to the kids at heart – the adults. There are toys, games, puzzles, arts and craft supplies, books and much much more with a focus on good quality brands and service. Goldie’s Nuts and More is another unique Bobcaygeon store, the brainchild of owner Erin Goldie. She carries the hugely-popular Picard line (including the Extreme chip line) and recently added specialty cheeses, olive oils and vinegars as well as baking products. The store also does gift baskets. People can actually order gift baskets online and have them delivered. You can’t

Locals will know Discovery Dream Home’s Peter Henderson from his years at Buckeye Marine. He brings an impeccable approach to customers in his new capacity as design and consulting associate for DDH. He will act as personal project manager to guide customers through the DDH process of introduction, design, contract, construction documents, production, delivery and construction. He will be there from start to finish if that is what the client wants. Peter said he wants to emphasize that DDH does so much more than just log homes. They will do any type of cottage or home building and additions, from log timber to post and beam, to regular stick frame. That also includes bunkies, horse
barns and sheds. DDH also has the ability to do custom builds to make anybody’s dreams come true. They have models but no two ever end up looking alike and the imagination is the only limitation for customers. Another stereotype is that custom-made DDH homes are expensive when in fact they will adjust to meet anybody’s budget, preferring that approach to over-selling. Peter is approachable. If you have dreamed of building a home or cottage or an addition to your existing property then go and talk to him. He will provide you with the advice you need to make that dream come true. Play a round of golf
Club is a semi-private course that opened in 1964. It measures 3,125 yards from the longest tees. It is rated as a strong local course by ScoreGolf, the voice of Canadian golf. It is a very walkable course that also features a driving range, lessons and rentals. Another fantastic choice is a round at Eganridge Inn and Country Club, best described in ‘Tee-Off’ magazine as “having impeccable course maintenance and Poanna grass in perfect condition. Winding 2,635 yards through pristine forests and unspoiled wetland areas, the par 35, nine-hole course which is laid out in Scottish links style, is a true pleasure to play”.
Kawartha Lakes is a golfer’s paradise with dozens of excellent golf courses framed by the peace and tranquility of nature. When it comes to learning the game, we recommend Kelly’s Glen Golf Learning Centre on Pigeon Lake Rd., Bobcaygeon. They offer kids programs, group lessons, private lessons and practice sessions under the watchful eye of Shana Kelly, a PGA of Canada Class A professional. John Eakins Walkway This walkway is located along the Trent-Severn Waterway at Bobcaygeon Lock 32, a National Historic Site of Canada. The walkway is dedicated to former federal M.P. John Eakins. Access to the trail is available in Bobcaygeon at Lock 32. Kawartha Settlers’ Village At Kawartha Settlers’ Village, they have a beautiful nature trail around the perimeter of their nine acres. Snowmobiles
The Kawartha Lakes Snowmobile Club was the number one club in Canada in 2006 and number one OFSC Club in 2005. They have a building on their property north of Fenelon Falls just off of the B103/E108 trails. From the heart of the club, there are OFSC-prescribed trails (E108 and B103), the Victoria Rail Line and B104. You can travel from Lindsay to Cameron, Fenelon Falls, Rosedale, Coboconk, Burnt River and Kinmount. You can unload your sleds at various parking lots, one in Fenelon Falls and one in Kinmount, and ride for the day. There is a new launching area just north of Superior Propane. The trail system joins Heart of Ontario to the south and west, Haliburton Snowmobile Association to the north and Twin Mountains to the East.
Kawartha ATV Association
Your opportunities for riding on KATVA trails are extensive and varied. You can enjoy several trail systems, encompassing more than 250 kilometres of trail. Some trails have historic connections, having once served as railway beds stretching between communities, while others pass through dense forest were established more recently for the purpose of recreation. Many trails offer riders splendid panoramas and vistas, including views 42 Explore Bobcaygeon 2014

of: lakes and waterways; meadows and valleys; and rolling hills and forests. The anchor trails are the Victoria Rail Trail Corridor (VRTC), Somerville Forest Tract, and Five Points Trail System, as well as special category trails. These trails vary greatly in both length and level of difficulty. Some trails are easily accessible from various communities and have multiple entry points, while others are more remote.
Osprey
Bird-lovers flock to the City of Kawartha Lakes every year to see our healthy Osprey population. There is a nesting pair at Ken Reid Conservation Area outside of Lindsay but just about any local can tell you where to go to see one in Bobcaygeon and area. The city boasts a volunteer organization – Friends of the Osprey. The work they do involves Osprey nest building, workshops and visits to elementary schools to teach young people about the importance of the Osprey. They have also done telemetry tracking by placing transmitters on migrating birds, which go as far south as South America in winter before returning to their summer nesting grounds. If you see a wooden tripod in a shallow body of water in the city, chances are it is a nesting box.

There are a number of towns and villages within a short drive of Bobcaygeon that are well worth a visit during a trip to the City of Kawartha Lakes. They include:

Burnt River: It was originally settled in the 1830’s as “Rettie’s Crossing.” Sometime in the 1920’s, the town was virtually razed by fire, hence today’s name. Today, it is a popular canoeing route, is along the Victoria Rail Trail Corridor – running north to Kinmount and south to Fenelon Falls for walkers, hikers, cyclists, ATVs, horseback riders, snowmobilers, cross-country skiers and snowshoe-ers. Cameron: Named after Duncan Cameron, one of the earliest landowners, Cameron is home to a United Church that is more than 100 years old. Throughout the countryside, organic farms offer naturally raised beef, fruit and vegetables and home-baked goods.

Coboconk: A bustling summer hub and busy stop for cottagers, Coboconk is known to locals as ‘Coby.’ It is close to Balsam Lake Provincial Park, is home to Canada’s smallest jail and hosts annual events such as the Fresh Water Summit festival, Coboconk Duck Derby, and a Santa Claus parade. Fenelon Falls: Fenelon Falls is nicknamed the “Jewel of the Kawarthas.” It has a population of approximately 1,800 permanent inhabitants, which swells in the summer due to tourism and cottaging. It is home to Lock 34 on the Trent-Severn Waterway between Sturgeon and Cameron lakes. It is primarily a tourist town and therefore is most active during the summer season.

Kinmount: It began as a lumber and logging town. At one time, six sawmills shipped products by rail and logs were floated downstream. The old train station is next to the Austin Sawmill and is the centre of what is now called Austin Sawmill Heritage Park, which is a tourist attraction. You’ll also find a farmers’ market there on Saturday mornings in the warmer months Visiting the Kinmount Fair on Labour Day weekend is a family tradition for many and the Kinmount Artisans marketplace in town is popular. Kirkfield: Founded in the late 1800s’s, the name is Scottish for church. It reflects the pious nature of the original settlers whose Protestant work ethic built the solid brick houses that line the main street of the town. It is the boyhood home of railroad magnate Sir William MacKenzie. It is also home to the Carden Alvar, renowned for flora, fauna and birdlife. One of the biggest attractions is the Kirkfield Lift Lock. It is the second highest hydraulic lift-lock in the world, with a lift of 15 metres. It was completed in 1907 and is a massive construction. The chamber is 140 feet long, 33 feet wide and has a normal water depth of eight feet. Lindsay: It is the largest town in the City of Kawartha Lakes and the hub of business and commerce. its economy is now in transition with a focus on water. There is alot to see and do, from the lock, to the historic downtown buildings and the iconic Academy Theatre. Norland: This town is marked by Canadian Shield granite and cedars and pines reminiscent of Group of Seven paintings. It sits between the City of Kawartha Lakes and the Haliburton Highlands and is known as ‘The Land Between.” It boasts quaint traditional resorts, recreational boating, canoeing, swimming and many more ways to relax. Rosedale: Named for Rosa Cameron, wife of early settler John D. Cameron, it is part of the Trent-Severn Waterway. Its Lock 35 is a traditional lock and a popular point of exploration for boaters. The canal is known for its prime bird-watching. Sturgeon Point: Incorporated in 1899, it is one of the most popular vacation spots on the waterway. From the golf course to the unique Sturgeon Point United Church, it is well worth the short drive. Explore Bobcaygeon 2014 45

PORT 32 Village life, city style. Arguably, the world’s greatest shoe store. Where there are shoes, there is life.
Walk to shopping and lattes.
How civilized. A short walk, or a shorter bike ride from your luxury bungalow in Port 32, and you can get your vanilla latte, stop at the market, pick up some flowers and a bottle of wine. Some bread from the bakery. Meet a friend for lunch. No rush, no hurry, no hassle. In Bobcaygeon you’ll live the village life in city style. Look forever but you will find,
There’s only one Bobcaygeon, and only one Port 32
