Ontario Houseboat Capital

It’s a boater’s dream: 386 kilometres of waterways through which to meander and enjoy some of the most beautiful scenery in the world. Whether you’re a tourist or a local resident, there are all kinds of attractions to enjoy as you float along. No wonder more than 96,000 boaters came through the locks of the Trent-Severn Waterway in 2014. In fact,

Bobcaygeon’s Pigeon Lake is home to more rental houseboats than anywhere else in Ontario. Special attractions include two of the world’s highest hydraulic liftlocks as well as Canada’s Freshwater Summit— our highest point on fresh water in this country from which you can navigate to the rest of the world by boat. thanks to the Trent-Severn Waterway. Want to enjoy a floating holiday, but don’t own a boat? No problem. Local houseboat rental operators offer more than 50 boats for rent, ranging in size from 32 to 56 feet. Happy Days Houseboats offers seven different models of houseboats

to choose from, accommodating up to 12 occupants (four bedrooms), and with lots of on-board features. Located on the west shore of Pigeon Lake, south of Bobcaygeon, Happy Days is home to the largest mooring of houseboats in the province. Egan Houseboat Rentals, on the east side of Pigeon Lake and just north of Emily Provincial Park, offers smaller style houseboats—maneuverable, easy to handle and stress free—specially suited to the Trent-Severn waters. And they can still accommodate up to eight people.

Lock 32

A National Historic Site

In the heart of Bobcaygeon you’ll find Lock 32, built more than 160 years ago, as the first lock constructed on what is now the Trent-Severn Waterway. Its swing bridge is also the oldest on the waterway. The park on the hill east of the lock is

a popular vantage point for watching boats, as well as for picnics. With the village a stone’s throw away, boaters will find restaurants, shops and services nearby. Its prime location makes this lock one of the busiest along the Trent-Severn Waterway. Overnight mooring is available above and below the lock.

Aerial Photo of Bobcaygeon What’s in a name?

“Bobcaygeon” is the settler version of an Anishinaabe (Ojibwa) word. According to Anishinaabe scholar Basil Johnston, the original word, baabaagwaajiwanaang means “at the very shallow currents,” which seems an appropriate description of the village location, especially before the waters were dammed. Interestingly, Omemee, the Anishinaabe name of the village at the south end of Pigeon Lake, actually means wild pigeon—a reference to the passenger pigeons that used to darken the skies here in their hundreds of thousands, until they were exterminated by settlers. And Miskwa Zibi, the small river you cross on the highway to Buckhorn, means “red water.”

Event Calendar The Bobcaygeon area hums with activity year-round. No matter what the season, you can enjoy a wide choice of things to do and see, as well as some of the best scenery and boating that Ontario has to offer. Here are some main events:

Spring

As the snow begins to go, the sap begins to flow. Warming weather and lengthening days make this a great time to get outside and enjoy both all that nature has to offer, and village attractions. March Break is a wonderful time to visit a local farm and see how maple syrup is actually made, while soaking up the friendly atmosphere of the farm. The Easter long weekend is another time to enjoy a relaxing visit with your family.

March and April

Spring is on its way when the syrup begins to go on sale. Our region offers plenty of places to see how this famously Canadian treat is made—and of course, to taste it. Little table games keep you and your family occupied while your order is prepared. A large variety of sauces and syrups are on sale. • Kennedy Family Sugar Bush, Millbrook: Tradition lives on in the Kennedy family even after five generations. Still using old fashion buckets and gathering most of the sap with a horse-drawn sleigh, the farm also has a modern pipeline system. This is a popular spot for visiting school groups, during and outside of maple syrup season. Call ahead and book a tour.

SUMMER

Summertime … and the livin’ is easy, whether you’re swimming, sailing, canoeing, playing golf, walking through the woods, or simply relaxing and taking in the sights of nature. Activities & Things to do Golf

Kawartha Lakes is a golfers’ paradise. Not only are there dozens of courses in the region, but many are located near scenic rivers and lakes. Sturgeon Point Golf Club is a historic nine-hole golf club built in 1899, and designed to offer deceptively challenging but accessible golf. The course takes you along Sturgeon Lake, playing alongside the lake and through mature oaks and pines, its layout is easily walkable. You’ll find all the amenities of a private club here in a course open to the public. For an unforgettable round of golf, go to Eganridge Inn and Country Club, located on a ridge overlooking Sturgeon Lake. This par-35, nine-hole course takes you through pristine forests and unspoiled wetland areas. Tee-Off Magazine described it as “a true pleasure to play.” Sheffield Greens is the new kid on the block. At least owners Tom and Anne Spence are new, but that just means they try harder. Sheffield is a nine-hole, public golf course located just north of Bobcaygeon along the north shore of Pigeon Lake (1596 Mill Line Road). A

picturesque, renovated old barn houses the pro shop and club house. The course is a par 34 and 2,765 yards of flat or mounded terrain that makes for easy walking.

Victoria Rail Trail

Another way to enjoy the great outdoors is on the Victoria Rail Trail. Officially named the Victoria Recreation Corridor, this is a 55-kilometre rail trail stretching from Lindsay to Kinmount used yearround for hiking, horseback riding, cycling, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, snowmobiling and ATVing. The trail takes you from Lindsay along Sturgeon Lake to Fenelon Falls, then along Cameron Lake and the Burnt River to Kinmount. The trip from Fenelon Falls north to Kinmount takes you through some of the county’s most scenic landscapes.

Sailing

Sturgeon Lake Sailing Club, at Sturgeon Point, has offered enthusiastic sailing instruction to children for more than 50 years in a friendly, inclusive, neighbourhood atmosphere. The Civic Regatta takes place over the August holiday weekend.

Swimming

Cool off on hot summer days at one of these local swimming spots: • Bobcaygeon Beach Park, at 45 Park St., Bobcaygeon, offers plenty of amenities, along with a swimming area. There’s a waterfront walkway and a picnic area along with barbeques, docks, boat launching ramp, washrooms, and a change room. • Riverview Park, off Mill Street on River Park Drive, east of East Street, is located on the north shore of the Little Bob channel. It has a sandy beach with a designated swimming area, and offers washrooms, picnic shelter, dock, parking and barbeques. • Forbert Memorial Pool is another option, especially if you like swimming in warm water. The pool is heated to 28 C. It’s located at 16 River Park Dr., Bobcaygeon, across from Riverview Park.

ATVing

Another way to enjoy our region is on an ATV. Several trail systems in the region offer more than 250 kms of trail. Local trails offer views of the different landscapes of our region, including

hills and forests, meadows, lakes and waterways. Trail maps are provided to all members of the Kawartha ATV Association, or can be purchased for $5 by non-members.

Osprey Watching

A hundred years ago, long before cottagers started developing the lakefront areas of the Kawartha Lakes region, the osprey had lots of places to nest in tall or dead trees. These magnificent birds have had to adapt and now nest at times in hazardous locations. Thankfully, however, there is a healthy osprey population in the area. You can see them wherever there is water nearby. The local Friends of the Osprey organization promotes understanding of these birds.

Cycling

Cycling through our region is one of the best ways to enjoy the beauty of the Kawarthas. Seven cycle routes through Kawartha Lakes and Haliburton County span a total length of 670 kilometres. Whether you ride a road or a mountain bike, or something in between, here are cycling routes that will take you along the Trent Severn Waterway or an abandoned railway line, through fields, forests, and wetlands, and into many historic towns and villages. Whatever your level of 24 Explore Bobcaygeon 2015

Bobcaygeon Wilderness Park

The Bobcaygeon Wilderness Park is a new park officially opened in 2014, located east off County Rd. 36 within the northeastern corner of Bobcaygeon (heading towards Buckhorn). It’s the result of hard work by local volunteers led by Environmental Action Bobcaygeon. Generous support from the Ontario Trillium Foundation and the City of Kawartha Lakes also helped make this eight-acre park a reality. The park provides hiking, cycling, cross-country skiing, and nature interpretation, with trails accessible to all, including those who are physically challenged. It is hoped that, in time, the park will be expanded in size and linked to other hiking/cycling trails in the community. The park is managed and maintained by volunteers.

Food Food packs so much more flavour when it’s fresh. The Bobcaygeon area offers consumers plenty of options for buying fresh eggs, maple syrup, fruit and vegetables, baking and much more, throughout the summer and into the fall. Foodland on Bolton Street offers water refills, specialty cakes, party platters, a hot deli counter and fresh flowers—and of course, fruits, vegetables, eggs, bread, meat, pasta, chocolate and cookies. A deli and ready-to-go meals can free up more time to relax at the cottage, or make a nice picnic for your boating adventure. Another attractive feature is the fact that you can shop here anytime in the summer, with the store open 24 hours a day. Another supermarket where you’ll find

Kawartha Dairy: Over 75 Years of Tradition & Quality A cottage country destination for generations of vacationers and cottage goers, those that have experienced a visit to Kawartha Dairy would certainly agree that summer just isn’t complete without a few Kawartha Dairy ice cream cones. Along with the Bobcaygeon outlet, other Kawartha Dairy stores are located in Minden, Lindsay, Bancroft, Huntsville, Peterborough, Uxbridge and Barrie. All Kawartha Dairy stores offer a full line of dairy products along with the company’s legendary premium ice cream. With over 45 flavours to choose from, visitors to the stores will no doubt agree their most difficult decision is deciding between all the choices available. The stores also carry a selection of frozen yogurt, sherbet and sugar free offerings, alongside ice cream flavours like Moose Tracks, Birthday Cake, Death By Chocolate, Banana Boat, Bear Claw and many other traditional favourites. The success of the company’s retail stores has spurred demand for the ice cream throughout Ontario, as Kawartha Dairy fans now crave that rich and creamy taste twelve months a year. Nowadays, their ice cream can be found at local shops in many communities and major centers throughout Eastern, Central and Southern Ontario. “In recent years, the demand for our ice cream has been overwhelming. Every week we have calls from retailers and scoop stands wanting to carry it because they have heard from their customers about Kawartha Dairy ice cream.” comments General Manager Blake Frazer. “We now have outlets selling our ice cream from Ottawa to Windsor.” Even with the increased availability of Kawartha Dairy ice cream throughout Ontario, the company’s heart and soul continues to be tied to cottage country. The Kawartha Dairy team is looking forward to seeing you at one of their stores this summer and would like to thank you for your continued loyal support. Kawartha Dairy. HOME DECORATING

The beautiful Old Schoolhouse Shoppes on King Street offers a unique shopping experience in a lovely setting, housing three distinctive shops under its roof. The “designing women” at In Fine Feather specialize in what they call “vintage chic” home décor and gifts. Good Pickins prides itself on offering “recycled, restored, repurposed furniture and home decor” items—and it lives up to its word with modern items like chandeliers, along with gifts from a bygone era—remember Brownie cameras. Nan’s Crossroads stands out as a place to find that humorous vintage advertising

sign, along with other country-homedecor items and gifts. Gilstorf and Gray is a new home-goods shop at 59 William St., with distinctive gifts that harken back to a bygone era, yet have come into fashion once again. These include quilts, furnishings, chandeliers, table linens and much more. “Our slogan, Live Well, Sleep Well, Give Well, is meant to describe the joie de vivre that goes along with life’s little luxuries,” says owner Robin Burrows. “Live Well” refers to our home décor and accessories, “Sleep Well” refers to the lovely lines of bedding, sleepwear, and bath items, “Give Well” refers to finding and giving that thoughtful unique item that makes the recipient feel extra special. “We’ve created

guest. “Give them a try; you won’t regret it”. It’s easy to see why Eganridge Inn & Spa is a member of Ontario’s Finest Inns and Ontario’s Finest Spas. Set atop an expansive ridge, this heritage estate overlooks scenic Sturgeon Lake in the heart of the Trent-Severn Waterway. Towering pines shade an historic, square-timbered manor house. Lakefront sunsets bring a warm glow to the dining room. The inn blends heritage romance with contemporary luxury. Its premier spa, scenic golf course and fine dining ensure a memorable visit. Dunsford House is at the heart of the Eganridge estate. Carved from virgin pine forests on the shores of Sturgeon Lake, this gracious log manor home blends Canadian heritage with contemporary luxury. Dunsford House remains one of the region’s finest square-timbered structures. Massive hand-hewn logs speak of the home’s early 19th-century heritage.

Cameron Located at the junction of Highway 35 and Cameron Road, 11 kilometres northwest of Lindsay, Cameron is a popular fishing destination for anglers trying their luck at Landings Marina, and at Long Beach Cottages and Trailer Park. Its United Church building is more than a century old. Coboconk Known locally simply as “Coby,” this village bustles in the summer with visitors to nearby Balsam Lake Provincial Park. It also boasts Canada’s smallest jail, a Fresh Water Summit Festival, the Coboconk Duck Derby and a Santa Claus parade. Fenelon Falls Fenelon Falls is an historic village with shopping, arts and culture, a waterfall and gorge, historic sites, a beach, parks and picnic areas—all within a four-block radius. It also has three other beaches, boat launches and is home to Lock 34 on the Trent-Severn Waterway between Sturgeon and Cameron lakes. It lives up to its nickname, the “Jewel of the Kawarthas.” Kinmount Kinmount is another local community steeped in history. It began as a lumber and logging town. Visitors can see the old train station and a sawmill at the Austin Sawmill Heritage park. The village is an

important source of supplies for summer cottagers in the area. Beside the train station you will find a striking statue titled In The Presence of a Soul, and a plaque commemorating the 352 Icelanders who came to the area in 1874, the first large group to arrive in Canada from that country. After a very hard winter in the bush, during which many died, the survivors moved on to Gimli, Manitoba, where they were able to make better use of their traditional fishing skills. Visitors will also enjoy a farmers’ market on Saturday mornings in the summer, the Kinmount Fair on Labour Day weekend, and the Kinmount Artisans marketplace. A unique attraction is Highland Cinemas, a first-run movie theatre, along with a movie poster and equipment museum. Kirkfield Kirkfield is located northwest of Lindsay at the junction of Kawartha Lakes Road 48 and Kawartha Lakes Road 6. It boasts the second highest lift-lock in Canada, Lock 36 on the Trent-Severn Waterway. It’s also home to the Carden Plain, a popular destination for bird watchers and nature lovers. Kirkfield was founded in the late 1800s by Scottish settlers, Lindsay With over 20,000 residents, the town of Lindsay offers visitors plenty to see and do, including dozens of places to eat. Notable attractions include the Ken Reid Conservation Area; and the Lindsay Art Gallery, which highlights the work of local artists; and the Olde Gaol Museum. The beautiful Academy Theatre in historic downtown Lindsay

attracts more than 50,000 people each year to enjoy community theatre, dance, musical and comedy performances. Norland This small rural community located on a scenic spot on the Gull River at the north end of Shadow Lake is remarkable for its Canadian Shield granite and its pines. Norland Beach offers swimming and fishing. Rosedale Rosedale is home to Lock 35 and thus serves as a convenient stop for TrentSevern boaters. It’s also a prime birdwatching spot. Sturgeon Point The scenic village of Sturgeon Point has been voted as the top cottage destination by Toronto Life Magazine. Visitors will enjoy a public beach, a park in the woods with basketball court as well as excellent swimming and fishing at the historic government wharf. It’s also walking distance to the Sturgeon Point Golf Club and the Sturgeon Lake Sailing Club, both of which offer programs for kids, ages 8-18.
