“It’s in Bobcaygeon...”
Gord Downie of the Tragically Hip may be the only one to understand the mysteries of the 2009 hit single “Bobcaygeon.” But you can be sure that residents, cottagers and visitors alike have no trouble reciting a long list of things they love about this picturesque historic town, affectionately known as Caygeon. For one thing, it’s hard to be in a bad mood with so much water around. Mostly situated on an island (three islands, really), and flanked by the Bobcaygeon River, Little Bob and Big Bob Channels, Lock 32, and two sparkling lakes, Bobcaygeon’s
personality is refreshing, honest and always up for a celebration. Immerse yourself in our festive nature, and stay as long as you’re able! We’ve got water and watercraft; arts and music; heritage and museums; family events and private gettaways; shopping, from classic to eclectic; the best tastes in local food and a surprising selection of restaurants; elegant and cozy places to stay; parks and trails and nature’s glory in all seasons. Our events listing (page 16) will give you even more reasons to come back and enjoy, again and again.

of the finest interconnected systems of navigation in the world. In addition to being a working waterway, the TrentSevern Waterway is a national historic site that welcomes over one million visitors a year. The historic canal system boasts two of the world’s highest hydraulic liftlocks (Kirkfield, Peteborough), a marine railway (Big Chute), and the highest point of fresh water elevation (Balsam Lake) from which you can circumnavigate the world by water. If you are vacationing in June, you’ll want to catch the Fresh Water Summit in Coboconk which helps celebrate that claim to fame (canadafreshwatersummit. com).
Lock 32 National Historic Site
Lock 32, built more than 160 years ago, was the first lock constructed on the Waterway. Its swing bridge is also the oldest on the waterway. Also look for the Lock Master’s Watch House, circa 1920. Grab a park bench and watch the boats go by, or enjoy a picnic under a tree for another vantage point. And don’t miss the fabulous shopping oh so close!

Houseboat Capital
No wonder that so many choose to experience the beauty and history of the region on a houseboat. What can be finer than living on the water for days or weeks, sampling peaceful sunrises, the catch of the day, a swim anytime, a bistro lunch in one community, and a concert in the next along the way? A
Happy Days Houseboat rental is rated #3 of Tripadvisor’s 8 top things to do in Bobcaygeon. Happy Days, located on the west shore of Pigeon Lake, is home to the largest mooring of houseboats in Ontario. Other rental companies, like Egan Houseboats, are also happy to accommodate you for your charmed vacation.

Highlights The Bobcaygeon area hums with activity year round. No matter what the season, we’ll make it worth your while to return, year after year. In addition to some of the best scenery and boating Ontario has to offer, here are some of our favourite events:
Unlock the Summer, June 4
This festive and much anticipated opening of summer by the Chamber of Commerce brings families, residents, cottagers, merchants, boaters together to celebrate the season of Fun. There are activities for kids of all ages, along with shopping and restaurant deals, plenty of music, and boat cruises on Pigeon Lake. The festivities will leave you wanting more, so come back for Canada Day weekend festivities and fireworks!
Globus Theatre
It’s always worth planning your stay around live, professional entertainment by Globus Theatre, the company-inresidence at the Lakeview Arts Barn, on Pigeon Lake Road. The LAB is a live-theatre venue in a former working cattle barn. In 1967, it was converted to a dance hall boasting the largest hardwood dance floor in all of Ontario (the floor is still regularly pressed into service), and was further transformed in 2006 into a comfortable 150-seat blackbox theatre, with a bar and dining area. Globus Theatre serves up a thoroughly entertaining and eclectic summer season, as well as special theatre events throughout the year. This year, don’t miss Knickers! A Brief Comedy, a play by Globus Theatre’s own
Canada/US Walleye Tournament
May 27 -29, 2016 At 35 years old, Ontario’s oldest live-release competition attracts teams from both sides of the border and offers anglers $10,000 for a first prize catch. The event also features a Can Am sport trade show at the Bobcaygeon arena. For some great views of the boats heading for Sturgeon Lake, find a spot on the Kawartha Lakes Road 24 Bridge over Little Bob Channel. (canadauswalleye.com)
Bikefest Bobcaygeon, June 19 Bobcaygeon takes on a completely different look in June when motorcycle enthusiasts roll into town by the thousands for a family-friendly gathering. You won’t want to miss the Show and Shine whether you are “showing” or enjoying the “shine.” Roads are closed for safety during the event. And while it’s only one day long, you can count on associated events in town at other venues; make it a weekend.

Heritage
The Kawartha region is steeped in history, which you can easily access by visiting more than a dozen small museums and significant historical sites within an hour’s drive from Bobcaygeon. Start with Kawartha Settlers’ Village. Once a thriving family farm, Kawartha Settlers’ Village is now home to a fascinating collection of over 20 historic homes and buildings. Experience what life was like for pioneers in the Kawarthas as you stroll through the Village and discover artifacts from 1830 – 1935. Settlers’ Village hosts numerous events and programs throughout the year, including Settlers’ Day in June, and the Festival of Trees in November, so be sure check the events listings on page 16. area. Personal glimpses of the struggles, successes, and tragedies of Boyd family members and neighbours are brought to life through the displays. The museum hosts a number of special events throughout the year; see ad adjoining page . For a taste of indigenous peoples’ lives and culture, visit the Whetung Ojibwa Centre and Gallery on the Curve Lake First Nation. The family-run centre grew out of a fishing lodge established in the early 1900s, and has prospered over the generations to become a 10,000 square foot gallery and museum. Some of the craftspeople are fourth and fifth generation artisans. The gallery’s inventory also includes quality arts and crafts from across the country. The Whetung Gallery attracts visitors from around the world.

Outdoor Paradise
Bobcaygeon and the Kawarthas are an outdoor paradise in all seasons.
Sugaring Off
As the days get a little longer and the snow begins to melt, the sap starts flowing, and it’s time to shake off winter. March is a wonderful time to visit local farms to see how we make that most Canadian of products, maple syrup. Check their websites for start and end dates of maple syrup season. McLean Berry Farm in Buckhorn offers wagon rides, live music, walks through the sugar bush, snow toffee-making, and, of course, pancakes with the real thing. The Kennedy Family has been producing maple syrup in Millbrook since the 1880s. The family sugar bush (705-932-2653) still uses old fashioned buckets and horse drawn sleighs for sap collection, alongside a modern pipeline system. This is a popular spot for visiting school groups. Wintergreen Maple Syrup and Pancake Barn, 40 minutes north of Bobcaygeon in Gelert, is primarily a restaurant and shop, featuring maple based and home made creations. There are special demonstrations during sugaring off season. Your country 30 Explore Bobcaygeon 2016
drive will be rewarded by this unique family run operation, where you can poke around the eclectic shop and walk the grounds after a satisfying meal.
Parks
You’ll find Beach Park, on Park Street, and the waterfront walkway at Lock 32 a pleasant place for a stroll or a picnic on a fine day, or for a swim when the temperature goes up. There is a picnic area with barbecues, washrooms, change rooms, and a boat launching ramp. Riverview Park, on River Park Drive (follow signs towards Forbert Memorial Pool from Highway 36), offers a sandy beach with a designated swim area, a picnic shelter, barbecues, washrooms, dock, and parking. Tommy Anderson Park, at 94 Dunn St, across from Settlers’ Village, offers a children’s playground, splash pad, washrooms, horseshoe pits, basketball and tennis courts, a skateboard park, a baseball field, and a soccer and football field (combined). Explore the trails of Bobcaygeon’s newest park. Wilderness Park was officially opened in the spring of 2014, after

the dedicated efforts of Environmental Action Bobcaygeon (EAB) volunteers who initiated the project. Eight acres of mature forest in the northeast corner of Bobcaygeon, the new park is open to hiking, cycling, cross country skiing, and nature interpretation, with trails that are built to best practice standards and accessible to all, including those who are physically challenged.
Cycling
Cycling through our region is one of the best ways to enjoy the beauty of the the Kawarthas. There are cycling routes that will take you along the Trent Severn Waterway or an abandoned railway line, through fields, forests and wetlands, and into many historic towns and villages. Whatever your cycling expertise and strength, you are in for a delightful ride. The Kawartha Cycling Club offers enthusiastic riding partners, weekly group rides and special tours. Contact the Club (kawarthacyclingclub.com) for free cycling routes right in and around Bobcaygeon. You can also download a map of routes from the Kawartha Lakes website, explorekawarthalakes.com.

Victoria Rail Trail
Another way to enjoy the great outdoors is on the Victoria Rail Trail. The 55-kilometre former rail corridor stretches from Lindsay to Kinmount via Fenelon Falls. It takes you through some of the county’s best scenery, along Sturgeon Lake, Cameron Lake and the Burnt River. The trail is used for hiking, horseback riding, cycling, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, snowmobiling and ATVing.
Gamiing
Gamiing Nature Centre (pronounced gaa-minj, an Ojibway word meaning “at the shore”) is an independent not-forprofit nature centre on the western shore of Pigeon Lake providing education and hands-on demonstrations of ecologically sound practices related to lakes and lakeshores. Gamiing organizes educational as well as fundraising events for the 32 Explore Bobcaygeon 2016

public, and offers inspirational programs for children. Visit the website to find out about environmental festivals throughout the year (gamiing.org).
Osprey Watching
Our many lakes make for a healthy osprey population in the area. A hundred years ago, before cottagers started developing the lakefront areas of the Kawartha Lakes region, the osprey had lots of places to nest in tall or dead trees. These magnificent birds have since had to adapt and at times nest in hazardous locations. The local Friends of the Osprey organization promotes understanding of these birds and sometimes builds platforms to ensure safe nesting. Look up and you might spot some of the giant nests.
Golf
Kawartha Lakes is a golfer’s dream, with many courses set near scenic rivers and lakes. Eganridge Golf and Country Club is set atop a grand ridge overlooking Sturgeon Lake. Winding 3,003 yards through pristine forests and unspoiled wetland areas, the par 35, nine-hole course is a true
pleasure to play. Weekend, Midweek, and Twilight Rates are available. Sheffield Greens is a 9-hole public course, originally opened in 1982 and under new ownership since 2014. It’s located just north of Bobcaygeon along the north shore of Pigeon Lake on Mill Line Road. A picturesque, renovated old barn houses the pro shop and club house. The course is a par 34 and 2,765 yards of flat or mounded terrain makes the course easy to walk. Twilight rates after 4 pm.

Powersports
If you are a powersport enthusiast, you will be well served, all seasons, in the Bobcaygeon area. Several trail systems for ATVs and snowmobiles offer plenty of options for your rides. The Kawartha ATV Association (katva.ca), and the Kawartha Lakes Snowmobile Club (klsc.ca), are dependable guides and can help you out with routes, trail conditions, and permits for your vehicle of choice.
Fall Colours
As everyone knows, the trees are spectacular in this area; go for a walk, a bike ride, a drive and you’ll be treated to one of the special glories of Bobcaygeon life. It’s also a great time to sample the local harvest at the Bobcaygeon Farmers Market, which wraps up its season at Thanksgiving.
Sheffield Greens Golf Club 9 hole - 2765 yard - 34 par Easy Walking course & good for all skill levels New owners as of 2014 season Family owned and operated
Winter Outdoors
Winter sends many indoors, but if you dress for the weather and keep the hot chocolate handy, this is a vibrant and beautiful time of year. Visitors to the Kawarthas can enjoy skating, ice fishing, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, curling, snowmobiling, or simply an invigorating walk amidst sparkling surroundings. It’s quieter in Bobcaygeon in winter, but you will find the same warm hospitality and good company to keep you feeling right at home.

Kawartha Dairy: Over 75 Years of Tradition & Quality A cottage country destination for generations of vacationers and cottage goers, those that have experienced a visit to Kawartha Dairy would certainly agree that summer just isn’t complete without a few Kawartha Dairy ice cream cones. Along with the Bobcaygeon outlet, other Kawartha Dairy stores are located in Minden, Lindsay, Bancroft, Huntsville, Peterborough, Uxbridge and Barrie. All Kawartha Dairy stores offer a full line of dairy products along with the company’s legendary premium ice cream. With over 40 flavours to choose from, visitors to the stores will no doubt agree their most difficult decision is deciding between all the choices available. The stores also carry a selection of frozen yogurt, sherbet and sugar free offerings, alongside ice cream flavours like Moose Tracks, Salty Caramel Truffle, Death By Chocolate, Banana Boat, Bear Claw and many other traditional favourites. The success of the company’s retail stores has spurred demand for the ice cream throughout Ontario, as Kawartha Dairy fans now crave that rich and creamy taste twelve months a year. Nowadays, their ice cream can be found at local shops in many communities and major centers throughout Eastern, Central and Southern Ontario. “In recent years, the demand for our ice cream has been overwhelming. Every week we have calls from retailers and scoop stands wanting to carry it because they have heard from their customers about Kawartha Dairy ice cream.” comments General Manager Blake Frazer. “We now have outlets selling our ice cream from Ottawa to Windsor.” Even with the increased availability of Kawartha Dairy ice cream throughout Ontario, the company’s heart and soul continues to be tied to cottage country. The Kawartha Dairy team is looking forward to seeing you at one of their stores this summer and would like to thank you for your continued loyal support. Kawartha Dairy. Proudly family owned since 1937.

Neighbouring Communities
Burnt River: Settled around the same time as Fenelon Falls, the town and river are named for a devastating fire that virtually razed the town in the 1920s. Burnt River is on a popular canoe route, and also along the Victoria Rail Trail Corridor between Fenelon Falls and Kinmount. There is no commercial district. Cameron: The village, between Fenelon Falls and Lindsay, was named after early landowner Duncan Cameron, and is home to a post office and a general store. Local farms offer naturally raised beef, fruit and vegetables, honey, and home-baked goods. Coboconk: A bustling summer hub and busy stop for cottagers, Coboconk is known to locals as “Coby.” It is close to Balsam Lake Provincial Park, is home to Canada’s smallest jail and hosts annual events such as the Fresh Water Summit Festival, Coboconk Duck Derby, and a Santa Claus parade. Pancakes from a traditional recipe are served on the Saturdays of summer long weekends at Christ Church. Fenelon Falls: Nestled between Sturgeon and Cameron lakes, this historic village lives up to its nickname, “The Jewel of the Kawarthas.” You’ll find the waterfalls by decend the stairs immediately north and east of the bridge, before the locks. Fenelon Falls features historic sites, shopping, a swimming beach, boat launches, and 40 Explore Bobcaygeon 2016
Lock 34 with overnight docking services. A roster of special events throughout the year will give you even more reasons to visit. Pick up a copy of Explore Fenelon Falls at the Chamber of Commerce Tourist Office at the locks. Kinmount: At one time, six sawmills shipped products from this logging centre by rail and water. The old sawmill and train station are at the centre of what is now called Austin Sawmill Heritage Park, where you will find a farmers’ market on Saturday mornings in the warmer months. Visiting the Kinmount Fair on Labour Day weekend is a family tradition for many and the Kinmount Artisans Marketplace is a popular shopping destination (reduced hours in the off seasons). The renowned Highlands Cinema, with its own movie memorabilia museum, is another draw. The independent theatre shows first-run movies on multiple screens during the tourist season. The Dharma Centre, a 400acre meditation retreat centre, is located east of Kinmount. Kirkfield: Founded in the late 1800s, the name reflects the attachment of Scottish settlers to their “kirk” or church, and perhaps the Protestant work ethic built into the solid brick homes that line the main street. Kirkfield is the boyhood home of 19th century railroad magnate Sir William MacKenzie. One of the biggest attractions is the Kirkfield Lift Lock, the second

highest hydraulic lift-lock in the world (the highest being in Peterborough), with a lift of 15 meters; its completion was quite an accomplishment in 1907. Kirkfield is also the location of a protected rare ecosystem, now Carden Alvar Provincial Park. The site attracts birders and others interested in the unique biodiversity of the area. Lindsay: As the largest town in the City of Kawartha Lakes, many identify Lindsay with the amalgamated municipality itself. Once a manufacturing and railway hub, Lindsay’s economy now focuses on agriculture and tourism. The Lindsay Farmers’ Market, established in 1859 and held Saturdays, 7 a.m. to 1 p.m., May through October, is one of Ontario’s longest running farmers’ markets. There are more than 35 vendors, offering fresh local produce in season, meats and meat products, breads, and gourmet foods, as well as art and hand made items by local artisans. The downtown has maintained its historic character and a “shop local” environment. The iconic Academy Theatre continues to host top entertainment as it has for generations. In September, the Lindsay Exhibition or LEX draws crowds to the fairgrounds for agricultural displays, the ever popular midway, and exciting entertainment. Norland: This town is marked by Canadian Shield granite and cedars and pines reminiscent of Group of Seven paintings.
Known as “The Land Between,” it sits between the City of Kawartha Lakes and the Haliburton Highlands. Norland boasts quaint traditional resorts, recreational boating, canoeing, swimming and many more ways to relax. Rosedale: Named for early settler Rosa Cameron, its Lock 35 is a popular point of exploration on the Trent Severn Waterway. The canal area is known for its prime birdwatching. Parks Canada oTENTik sites will be available at Lock 35 in 2016; reserve a site by calling 1-877-737-3783. Village of Sturgeon Point: Incorporated in 1899, this tiny community is a popular destination for a country drive or boat excursion, not to mention weekend and summer retreats of summer residents who have maintained family cottages for generations. The Union Church (Round Church) is a remarkable structure built in 1888 and worth seeing (nondenominational services are held during summer months). The Sturgeon Point 9-hole golf club was built in 1899 and continues to provide a challenging but accessible course at lakeside. Of special note is the Sturgeon Lake Sailing Club, which has offered enthusiastic sailing instruction to children for more than 50 years in a friendly, inclusive, neighbourhood atmosphere. The Civic Regatta takes place over the August holiday weekend. Explore Bobcaygeon 2016 41
