Welcome to Kawartha Lakes! It’s that time of year again; the days are a little bit longer, the sun feels a little bit warmer and after a long winter, it is time to get out and explore. Council and staff are working hard within our community to rebuild following the economic impacts of the pandemic. Development is booming with 1,500 new residential units approved in 2021. Council’s incentives are working and have attracted investment in 300,000 square feet of approved construction of commercial, industrial, and institutional space last year. With newly reconstructed downtowns in Lindsay and Fenelon Falls, and the Bobcaygeon Beach Park to be completed this year, We are moving, ever closer, to our vision of a thriving and growing community. This is our year. From our beautiful trails, parks, arenas, and vibrant downtowns, there’s so much to be excited about this year. People of all generations are flocking to Kawartha Lakes. Join them and ‘jump in.’ Andy Letham Mayor, City of Kawartha Lakes As Federal Member of Parliament, I would like to take this opportunity to introduce the riding of Haliburton-Kawartha Lakes-Brock and provide a warm welcome to visitors. Both local residents and visitors will agree, there is no place in Ontario quite like the Kawartha Lakes. With a vibrant arts sector you can listen to concerts in the park, find unique local artisan products and not to mention the breathtaking waterfront trails along the Trent-Severn Waterway and scenic nature walks throughout the region. If you haven’t explored Kawartha Lakes, this year the Ontario government is providing a great opportunity to do so with the Ontario Staycation Tax Credit. This tax credit allows Ontario residents to claim 20 per cent of their eligible 2022 accommodation expenses and individuals can get back up to $200 or $400 as a family. Welcome to Fenelon Falls
This historic village nestled on the shores of Cameron Lake is a visitor’s delight and is one of Canada’s first Trail Town Communities. The Trail Town program features the historic Trent-Severn Waterway as the trail which offers visitors opportunities to explore the outdoor activities, pristine lakes and rivers, great shopping and dining hand in hand with arts, culture and heritage. If you haven’t been to Fenelon Falls in awhile, you’ll be treated to a revitalized downtown and area attractions. There’s still a lot of history to see, especially at Maryboro Lodge – Fenelon Falls Museum. But you can also find unique shops, dining experiences, landmarks and outdoor activities, as well as an extraordinary outdoor amphitheatre – The Grove. There’s also a new way to discover more about Fenelon Falls. When the COVID-19 pandemic hit
and tourism trends began to shift, this quaint village embarked on an innovative partnership with a Canadian augmented reality tourism app company – Driftscape. Of course, you can’t come to Fenelon Falls and not take in one of the most popular attractions --the miniature “Niagara Falls” flowing through the limestone gorge. It is a great destination for families. Fenelon Falls’ waterfront offers something for everyone: cultural experiences, natural beauty, an inviting shopping district, dining, a sandy beach, and a unique ecological history. Called a “Niagara in miniature” by the first settlers, the seven metre Fenelon Falls can be seen from the east side of the Colborne Street Bridge. Prior to development, the river could be crossed on a natural stone bridge behind the curtain of the water. For generations the falls have powered the community with saw and grist mills, and more recently electric power.

Lock 34, located conveniently near the downtown core of Fenelon Falls offers boaters prime docking space with hydro and water hookups with restaurants, shops, and services just a stroll away. While travelling through the Lock, you can catch a glimpse of the restored Fenelon Theatre marquee installed at the corner of Water and Oak Streets. Fenelon Falls was a difficult obstacle to overcome. It took 12 years from the start of construction, a double lock and the introduction of dynamite before the first boat could pass. Today Lock 34 is a notably beautiful stop on the Trent-Severn Waterway.

It is a space where professional theatre, concerts, live music, and other community events will animate the stage. Friends and family will gather to enjoy open-air performances staged in an idyllic natural setting. Created under the auspices of the Kawartha Works Community Co-op, with initial funding from the Ontario Trillium Foundation and additional support from members of the local community, the amphitheatre has been conceived to engage and inspire both visitors and local residents. Programming will include a professional production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, the Musical, that will run for five weeks (30 performances). The space will be available for faith services and ceremonies, musical acts, dance recitals, and anyone who wants to tread the boards of the stage. Gathering in the open-air Grove Theatre is an attractive option to visitors, including those from the GTA, only 90 minutes away. Those who enjoy an outdoor theatrical experience in this beautiful Kawarthas setting will not be disappointed.

Outdoor Activities Fresh air is good for your health – and your mind! In the Fenelon Falls area, we have trails, parks and, of course, pristine lakes to make your outdoor adventure picture perfect! Hiking Fenelon Falls is the perfect access point to the Victoria Recreation Corridor that runs from Lindsay, through Fenelon Falls to Kinmount. This scenic trails runs along the shore of Cameron Lake in Fenelon Falls and offers beautiful scenery. The public trails are open year-round for a variety of recreational uses.

Cycling The Victoria Rail Trail runs through Fenelon Falls and is used by cyclists as a great way to get up close and personal with Mother Nature. There are other trail options in the area. You can contact the Kawartha Cycling Club (kawarthacyclingclub.com) for more information about cycling in Fenelon Falls and area or to join one of their special events and excursions. Swimming Check out Garnet Graham Beach Park for some family swimming time on one of the beautiful sandy beaches and clean, clear water. There’s also a splash pad, beach volleyball and a playground.

The Kawartha Lakes Country Living Show on April 22 to 24, 2022, showcases local vendors, businesses and organizations. Celebrate the holiday season at Santa Day, held the last Saturday in November, the largest celebration in the Kawartha Lakes and it’s free for all. The activities start at 11am and culminate with the nighttime Santa Parade at 5pm and fireworks at 6 pm.
In the summer you can stroll the village, enjoy our many beautiful gardens and travel the Victoria Rail Trail along Cameron Lake. The trail heads north to Kinmount and south to Lindsay where it intersects with a network of trails. Travel the trail on foot, bicycle or ATV and in the winter snowshoe and snowmobile.
