The village of Fenelon Falls and the Trent-Severn Waterway continue to benefit from the more than 753-feet of new docking space officially opened in the town back in 2012. The new section (thanks to Fenelon Falls and District
Chamber of Commerce) has hydro and water hookups, making it a key stop for boaters visiting Lock 34. In addition to the historic lock along the TrentSevern Waterway (one of the earliest to be built between 1883 and 1887 and connecting Cameron and Sturgeon lakes), there is a hydroelectric generating station between the falls and the lock. A viewing platform with interpretive signs
provides a useful overview of the generation process, complete with diagrams and maps. Power generation at this location started as early as 1894 when the Fenelon Falls Electric Light Co. installed a unit to generate an incredible 30 kilowatts. The existing station started generating electricity in 1997. The remains of another station that produced power until the late 1950s can be seen across the road.

Just upstream from Lock 34 is the Fenelon Falls Marina. New owners Glenn and Heather Jackson took over in February 2013 and have been investing money and making changes ever since. In addition, they are becoming involved in the community, having sponsored one of the events at last year’s Santa Day in Fenelon Falls and providing a wreath for the Festival of Trees at Kawartha Settlers’ Village in Bobcaygeon. The on-water marina has transient and seasonal slips, with hot and cold running water, washrooms, a pump-out service and a restaurant. In addition, they sell and service both summer and winter toys, with a focus on

They also sell and service Yamaha snowmobiles. They have a huge service department with four certified technicians who can work on both inboard and outboard engines. They also do indoor and outdoor storage; are certified as a clean marina and are members of Boating Ontario. Stay tuned for their upcoming Spring demo day.

Buckeye Marine
Hwy 36, where it stands today. Their success is phenomenal, really, having been named top Canadian dealer in Boating Industry’s Top 100 Dealer Program every year since the program’s inception in 2005. In 1997, the business diversified when David opened ‘Buckeye Sports’ at the original location now called “Buckeye Surf & Snow”. He and his wife Monica have since expanded to three Buckeye stores that are an integral part of the core of downtown Bobcaygeon and a mustshop-stop for visitors. With the fourth generation of the Poole family now actively involved in the business, Buckeye continues to stay on top of what lies ahead in the boating world. They are committed to remaining an innovative leader in their industry because they want to be the best they can be for their customers.
Although it is located in the small town of Bobcaygeon, Buckeye Marine is a big player in the boating, as well as surf and ski, industries. The company motto of “We care” hasn’t changed since Grandpa Tom Thompson started the business as a bait and tackle shop with boat rentals and sporting goods sales. The tradition continued on when Tom’s son-in-law Frank joined in 1958. Frank brought mechanical expertise with him to the company and expanded the business to include sales and service of boats and motors. Through the 1970s and 1980s, Tom’s grandsons Gary (who tragically passed away in 2013), David and Chris got involved in the business which resulted in a substantial growth in the sales and service departments. Together, they took the business to a new level in 1989 when they moved the marine business to the large boat sales and service facility on

Along the Trent Canal on beautiful Balsam Lake, Rosedale Marina is a full service marina, dealer and service pro for many makes and models of boats and personal watercraft in addition to marine accessories. They have a terrific selection of water sport products such as skis, tubes and flotation devices. They have a store that sells marine accessories, bait, snacks and beverages. They also rent boats, ranging from canoes to 20-foot pontoons; are a full service marina; offer consignment sales; storage and summer dockage.

Surrounded by trees and vegetation, this secluded lock station is a popular spot for a day picnic and overnight mooring. It is situated on a manmade cut connecting Cameron Lake to the east to Balsam Lake at its west end. The entire canal is less than two miles in length yet holds a number of marinas. Once above the lock, the village of Rosedale is ahead, while to the north is the shallow Rosedale River channel 40.
Ontario Houseboat Capital

printed what many of us have known for years! With more rental houseboats than anywhere else in Ontario along our very own Pigeon Lake, the possibilities are endless for locals and tourists alike - especially when you add a 386-kilometre Trent-Severn Waterway (TSW) canal to the mix. Let’s not forget two of the world’s highest hydraulic liftlocks and Canada’s Freshwater Summit in nearby Coboconk, the highest point of fresh water elevation from which you can circumnavigate the world by water. The area boasts three houseboat rental operators with more than 50 houseboats available for rent. Ranging in size from 32 to 56-feet, there is something for everyone: from the bare necessities to luxurious comfort and executive style. In addition, full training
and licensing is provided by houseboat operators in the region. One of our favourites is Egan Houseboat Rentals. For locals, or out-oftowners, this should definitely be added to the bucket list!

Without a doubt, one of the quintessential summer experiences in the City of Kawartha Lakes is attending a Lock Jam concert on Island Park in Fenelon Falls. Imagine assembling on the grass with a picnic supper, in time to watch the sunset and then the stars and moon appearing overhead as you listen to some of the greatest musical entertainment Central Ontario has to offer. Turning from the stage, you will see the nearby picturesque Lock 34 in Fenelon Falls with its beautiful water, boat traffic and the lights of the hamlet’s quaint shops. And then, picture doing all of this for free! Lockjam stretches throughout the summer months, traditionally kicking off on the Victoria Day long weekend with six feature events, with hours of live family entertainment. Highlands Cinema
From Fenelon Falls, it is well worth the 34-km drive to the nearby village of Kinmount, home to one of the most unique movie-theatres in all of North America. Highlands Cinema is the brainchild of owner Keith Statta - who converted his home to a movie house starting back in 1979 with a single, 58-seat theatre. By
James Goodliff 705.488.1915 www.jamesgoodliff.ca 18 Explore Fenelon Falls & Area 2014
1996, he had added his fifth screen with the largest capable of seating 200. More recently, Keith invested a huge chunk of change to convert to HD technology. For years, a matinee or night out at Highlands Cinema has been on the must-do list of cottagers and locals alike. With a movie museum featuring items Keith has purchased from some 450 defunct cinemas, it is best to arrive early to have a look around. He also has everyday items from various decades in display cases. Keith’s caring for stray cats in the area is also legendary and he has built a contained outdoor cat house to house them with plans for bigger and better things to come this year. Stay tuned.
Kawartha Arts Festival
This year marks the 25th anniversary of the Kawartha Arts Festival - one of the most highly-respected art shows in Canada. To celebrate the quarter-of-a-century milestone, the festival will have several surprises for visitors in 2014, including musical entertainment and on-site refreshments. It is a one-of-a-kind art show – with 100 artists from Ontario and Quebec participating in one of the most exciting art events in the area. It is indeed a very high caliber of artists featuring a variety of visual arts and styles. In addition to selling their artwork, artists do demonstrations and are happy to discuss their craft.

The festival has grown to embrace the hearts of cottagers, locals and visitors from across the province. Admission and parking are free but a donation at the door gives patrons an opportunity to win a door prize. The Kawartha Arts Festival is held at the Fenelon Falls Fairgrounds every Labour Day long weekend. See www. kawarthaartsfestival.com for more.

Heritage
Fenelon Falls Museum
Located at Maryboro Lodge, the museum has been welcoming the public since 1963 to view its extensive collection. Painstakingly built in 1837 as the first settlers arrived, Maryboro’s plaster, paint and nails had to be paddled and portaged to the site. Its proprietor, James Wallis, ran the village’s sawmill, so Maryboro is built of stacked deals, small timbers that were then exported to Great Britain. Wallis, who in partnership with Robert Jameson, owned Fenelon Falls, occupied the most picturesque site, the open stand of bur oaks that had marked the portage from Cameron to Sturgeon Lake since time immemorial. Maryboro Lodge’s white plastered walls stood ostentatiously above Cameron Lake, which was then ringed with forests and shanties. Changes in the local environment, the built and natural landscape, and the lives of inhabitants from pre-settlement 20 Explore Fenelon Falls & Area 2014
to WWII are highlighted in displays throughout the sprawling house. The centennial of WWI is commemorated this year with a special exhibition in the Langton Gallery. A busy social center throughout the summer, the museum hosts a Canada Day strawberry social, Wednesday afternoon teas, pioneer summer school and heritage activities. Open weekends spring and fall, daily in summer. 50 Oak Street www.maryboro.ca 705-887-1044
Horseless Carriage Museum
One of Canada’s most unique privately-owned museums sits nestled between Bobcaygeon and Fenelon Falls amid picturesque surroundings. The Horseless Carriage is a non-profit museum of early transportation and mechanical antiquities. It is privately-owned and operated by the Bennett family. The museum started as an attempt to preserve Canadian history and through the years, the collection has grown to its present size and the Bennett family has decided to share their interests and collection with the public. From the stunning display of some of Canada’s oldest running cars, to gas station memorabilia, curiosities and an 1890’s general store, it is an experience that will fascinate and educate. They also have a museum store. They are located at 1427 County Road 8, between Fenelon Falls and Bobcaygeon.

Your opportunities for riding on KATVA trails are extensive and varied. You can enjoy several trail systems, encompassing more than 250 kilometres of trail. Some trails have historic connections having once served as railway beds stretching between communities, while other trails passing through dense forest were established more recently for recreation. Many trails offer riders splendid panoramas and vistas. The anchor trails are the Victoria Rail Trail Corridor (VRTC), Somerville Forest Tract, and Five Points Trail System, as well as special category trails. These trails vary in length and level of difficulty. Some trails are easily accessible from various communities and have multiple entry points, while others are more remote. If you are interested in finding out more, google Kawartha ATV Association.
Osprey
Bird-lovers flock to the City of Kawartha Lakes every year to see our healthy Osprey population. Just about any local can tell you where to go to see one in Fenelon Falls and area. The city boasts a volunteer organization – Friends of the Osprey. The work they do involves Osprey nest building, workshops and visits to elementary schools to teach young people about the importance of the Osprey. They have also done telemetry tracking by placing transmitters on migrating birds, which go as far south as South America in winter before returning to their summer nesting grounds. If you see a wooden
tripod in a shallow body of water in the city, chances are it is a nesting box.
Fenelon Falls Fair
The Fenelon Agricultural Society would like to thank everyone for their support for the Fenelon Fair in 2013 and we look forward to seeing you at the fair again in 2014. Mark your calendars - Aug. 8, 9 & 10. Â All of our volunteers are working hard to make the fair even bigger for your whole family to enjoy. See you then.
Kawartha Lakes Snowmobile Club
The Kawartha Lakes Snowmobile Club was the number one club in Canada in 2006 and number one OFSC Club in 2005. They have a building on their property north of Fenelon Falls just off of the B103/ E108. From the heart of the club, there are OFSC-prescribed trails (the E108 and B103), the Victoria Rail Line and B104. You can travel from Lindsay to Cameron, Fenelon Falls, Rosedale, Coboconk, Burnt River and Kinmount. You can unload your sleds at various parking lots, one in Fenelon Falls and one in Kinmount and ride for the day. There is a new launching area just north of Superior Propane. The trail system joins Heart of Ontario to the south and west, Haliburton Snowmobile Association to the north and Twin Mountains to the East. Their scenic OFSC-prescribed trails take you through some areas like the majestic Tall Pines woodlot known as the Pinery Trail, the Maple Bush Trail and the Heritage Trail. All of the side OFSC-prescribed
trails give the avid snowmobiler the most breath- taking views of nature, away from the hustle and bustle of the city. After spending a day on the OFSC-prescribed trails, you may never want to leave.

Fenelon Falls Community Centre

The Fenelon Falls Community Centre was officially opened in 2012 and has been a popular venue for not only hockey but a growing number of community and social events ever since. The centre houses a single-pad arena as well as an attached 350-person capacity and fully accessible community centre. The $10.5 million project was made 26 Explore Fenelon Falls & Area 2014

Play a round of golf
Kawartha Lakes is a golfer’s paradise with dozens of excellent golf courses framed by the peace and tranquility of nature. When it comes to learning the game, we recommend Kelly’s Glen Golf Learning Centre on Pigeon Lake Rd., Bobcaygeon. They offer kids programs, group lessons, private lessons and practice sessions under the watchful eye of Shana Kelly, a PGA of Canada Class A professional. Shana takes her juniors to the Dunsford Golf Club to play. The 9-hole, par 36, Dunsford Golf Club is a semi-private course that opened in 1964. It measures 3,125 yards from the longest tees. It is rated as a strong local course by ScoreGolf, the voice of Canadian golf. It is a very walkable course that also features a driving range, lessons and rentals. Another fantastic choice is a round at Eganridge Inn and Country Club, best described in ‘Tee-Off’ magazine as “having impeccable course maintenance and Poanna grass in perfect condition. Winding 2,635 yards through pristine forests and unspoiled wetland areas, the par 35, nine-hole course which is laid out in Scottish links style, is a true pleasure to play”.

If you want a chance to see your picture featured in the Explore Fenelon Falls and Area or Explore Bobcaygeon and Area tourist books next year, visit www.thepromoter.ca for more details. Bobcaygeon: Bobcaygeon’s chief industry is tourism, particularly related to recreational fishing. It is also a hub for the region, providing many of the services unavailable in the smaller neighbouring communities.

Burnt River: It was originally settled in the 1830’s as “Rettie’s Crossing.” Sometime in the 1920’s, the town was virtually razed by fire, hence today’s name. Today, it is a popular canoeing route, is along the Victoria Rail Trail Corridor – running north to Kinmount and south to Fenelon Falls for walkers, hikers, cyclists, ATV’s, horseback riders, snowmobilers, crosscountry skiers and snowshoe-ers. Cameron: Named after Duncan Cameron, one of the earliest landowners, Cameron is home to a United Church that is more than 100 years old. Throughout the countryside, organic farms offer naturally raised beef, fruit and vegetables and home-baked goods. Coboconk: A bustling summer hub and busy stop for cottagers, Coboconk is known to locals as ‘Coby.’ It is close to Balsam Lake Provincial Park, is home to Canada’s smallest jail and hosts annual events such as the Fresh Water Summit festival, Coboconk Duck Derby, and a Santa Claus parade.

Kinmount: It began as a lumber and logging town. At one time, six sawmills shipped products by rail and logs were floated downstream. The old train station

is next to the Austin Sawmill and is the centre of what is now called Austin Sawmill Heritage Park, which is a tourist attraction. You’ll also find a farmers’ market there on Saturday mornings in the warmer months. Visiting the Kinmount Fair on Labour Day weekend is a family tradition for many and the Kinmount Artisans marketplace in town is popular. Kirkfield: Founded in the late 1800s’s, the name is Scottish for church. It reflects the pious nature of the original settlers whose Protestant work ethic built the solid brick houses that line the main street of the town. It is the boyhood home of railroad magnate Sir William MacKenzie. It is also home to the Carden Alvar, renowned for flora, fauna and birdlife. One of the biggest attractions is the Kirkfield Lift Lock. It is the second highest hydraulic lift-lock in the world, with a lift of 15 metres. It was completed in 1907 and is a massive construction. The chamber is 140 feet long, 33 feet wide and has a normal water depth of eight feet. Lindsay: It is the largest town in the City of Kawartha Lakes and the hub of business and commerce. Forged by the railway and then manufacturing, its economy is now in transition with a focus on water. There is much to see and do, from the lock, to the historic downtown buildings and the iconic Academy Theatre.

Norland: This town is marked by Canadian Shield granite and cedars and pines reminiscent of Group of Seven paintings. It sits between the City of Kawartha Lakes and the Haliburton Highlands and is knows as ‘The Land Between.” It boasts quaint traditional resorts, recreational boating, canoeing, swimming and many more ways to relax. Rosedale: Named for Rosa Cameron, wife of early settler John D. Cameron, it is part of the Trent-Severn Waterway. Its Lock 35 is a traditional lock and a popular point of exploration for boaters. The canal is known for its prime bird-watching. Sturgeon Point: Incorporated in 1899, it is one of the most popular vacation spots on the waterway. From the golf course to the unique Sturgeon Point United Church, it is well worth the short drive. Explore Fenelon Falls & Area 2014 29

Locals will know Discovery Dream Home’s Peter Henderson from his years at Buckeye Marine. He brings an impeccable approach to customers into his new capacity of design and consulting associate for DDH. He will act as personal project manager to guide customers through the DDH process of introduction, design, contract, construction documents, production, delivery and construction. He will be there from start to finish if that is what the client wants. Peter said he wanted to emphasize that DDH does so much more than just log homes. They will do any type of cottage or home building and additions, from log timber to post and beam, to regular stick frame. That also includes bunkies, horse
barns and sheds. DDH also has the ability to do custom builds to make anybody’s dreams come true. They have models but no two ever end up looking alike and the imagination is the only limitation for customers. Another stereotype is that custom-made DDH homes are expensive when in fact they will adjust to meet anybody’s budget, preferring that approach to over-selling. Peter is approachable. If you have dreamed of building a home or cottage or an addition to your existing property then go and talk to him.He will provide you with the advice you need to make that dream come true. *contact: phenderson@discoverydreamhomes. com, cell 705-341-1960 ; located next to Edgetown Ford on Hwy. 36

Chamber President Message Fenelon Falls lives up to its reputation as “The Jewel of the Kawarthas”. We continue to sparkle with exciting landscapes, parks, docking, shopping and special events all year long. The Fenelon Falls Chamber hosts the area’s most popular Country Living Show on the first weekend in May. This event is now housed at our new Community Centre and arena. Country Living has grown out of our Home, Cottage and Recreation Show with 40% more content. On the Canada Day weekend we celebrate Midnight Madness throughout the shopping district with entertainment and shopper specials at every store. On the first of July we celebrate Canada all day long at our beachfront with fun and games and a concert culminating in a large fireworks presentation. Throughout the summer and into the autumn months the merchants of Fenelon Falls put on several events that spark the imagination of both young and old which makes the village a fun place to visit and to shop. When autumn fades into winter we prepare for the festive season with Santa Day, the last Saturday in November. This is possibly the largest celebration of Santa in all of Canada. It is a free all-day celebration for children with Santa’s workshop, petting zoo, rides, free snacks, cookie-making, face painting and countless other activities culminating with the Santa Claus parade and fireworks presentation. Fenelon Falls also sparkles because of its many attractions. We have more than 750 feet of docking at the Lock 34 with hydro and water available. 40 Explore Fenelon Falls & Area 2014
