The Jewel of the Kawarthas on the Trent-Severn Waterway
It’s been said that Fenelon Falls looks “just like Niagara Falls”—if a little smaller. You’ll really appreciate the thrill of this powerful cascade if you can make your way down to the best vantage point. Look for the sign on the north-east side of the bridge and follow the path and stairs down to the water. You will also have an impressive view of the hydroelectric generating station between the falls and the lock. Take a little time with the interpretive signs. Whether you arrive in Fenelon Falls by land or water, there’s no doubt that Lock 34, one of the earliest locks built on the historic Trent-Severn Waterway, is also one of the village’s prominent features. Who can resist whiling away a leisurely hour watching boats of all sizes rise and fall a whopping seven metres, as they make their way between Sturgeon and Cameron Lakes? Lock 34 offers boaters plenty of prime docking space, with hydro and water hookups, and easy access to village amenities. There is a public boat launch adjacent to the dock, towards Garnet Graham Park. Restaurants, shops, parks, and services are all within easy walking distance.

Fishing: Do I need a licence?
The Kawartha Lakes are well known for world-class fishing for walleye, bass, panfish, and more on our many lakes. The warm-water fishery features species like walleye (or pickerel), small- and largemouth bass, muskellunge, northern pike, yellow perch, bullhead, sucker, and carp. Each lake has its own characteristics that make it a favourite for its particular fans. You might try your luck dropping a line from the dock too. Remember that if you wish to include fishing in your vacation, you will need a fishing licence. They are available at any marina or bait shop. During Family Fishing Days, February 14–16 and July 4–12, you can fish licencefree.
Boating: Do I need a licence?
Not long ago you could operate small motor boats without a special licence, but no longer. Transport Canada requires that you prove your competency by taking a boating safety course in-person or online, passing the test, and obtaining your Pleasure Craft Operator Card at the end of the course. The course is not hard, and if you need more extensive safety and operating skills training, you should ask questions before you enroll to make sure you are learning what you need. Several bait, sports, and marine outlets, including Fenelon Marina, issue the Pleasure Craft Operator Card.

40 Years of Cruising the Trent Waterway. Visit Historic Towns, Islands & Bays
Ontario’s Houseboat Capital
Fenelon Falls—the “Jewel of the Kawarthas”—is one of the many reasons this section of the Trent-Severn Waterway is considered Ontario’s Houseboat Capital. Houseboats are available for rent during the summer and shoulder seasons. It’s like having your own mobile, floating cottage. Both directions from Lock 34 will take you to serene waters, charming villages, peaceful parks, delightful beaches, and a waterfront view of all the sparkling scenery you could wish for. And just to keep things really interesting, the historic canal system boasts the world’s two highest hydraulic liftlocks (Kirkfield and Peteborough), a marine railway (Big Chute), and the highest point of fresh water elevation (Balsam Lake) from which you can circumnavigate the world by water. If you’re vacationing in June, you’ll want to catch the Fresh Water Summit in Coboconk, which helps celebrate that claim to fame (www.canadasfreshwatersummit. ca). Go where you want, stop when you want, and just relax, knowing you have all the comforts right with you. Egan Houseboat Rentals, on the east side of Pigeon Lake and just north of Emily Provincial Park, offers smaller style houseboats—maneuverable, easy to handle and stress free—specially suited to the TrentSevern waters. And they can still accommodate up to eight people. Happy Days Houseboats offer seven different models of houseboats, accommodating up to 12 occupants (four bedrooms), and with lots of on-board features. Located on the west shore of Pigeon Lake, south of Bobcaygeon, Happy Days is home to the largest mooring of houseboats in the province.

Winter Food Fest Watch The Promoter events pages for community fundraising dinner events in and around town throughout the year. Starting in February you won’t want to miss the Association of Churches Winter Food Fest, featuring old-fashioned church suppers at different locations each week.
Restaurants
You can choose from a variety of casual family restaurants in town. The Orchid Bistro on May Street, a sister to Wild Orchid in Minden, is one of our favourites. Don’t let the small seating area fool you; the scrumptious Thai food here rivals that of the best Thai eateries in the city. If you’re hungry (really hungry) for home cooking in a welcoming atmosphere, have Sharney cook for you at Sharney’s Diner on the main street. Serving excellent breakfasts, burgers, fish and chips, bread pudding and other comfort foods from scratch, Sharney will occasionally offer a traditional Newfoundland Jiggs Dinner and cod au gratin.

Arts & Culture
Fenelon Falls has an active community of many excellent artists, and there are several opportunities to enjoy and purchase their works. The Train Station Gallery, an important Fenelon Falls landmark, is located on Lindsay Street south of the bridge. Here you’ll find stunning pieces, from paintings to pottery, and carving to sculpture, treasured gifts for yourself or friends and family. When the leaves are turning glorious colours, it’s time for the Victoria County Studio Tour, now in its 30th year. There are two weekends to visit studios, usually the end of September and the beginning of October. (Watch for the Lindsay Gallery to showcase featured artists prior to the tour this year.) Some locally known artists include Maud Skoog, who specializes in moving nature scenes rendered in oil on canvas,

and James A. Goodliff, whose works in both traditional and digital media cross a variety of genres, but always invoke emotion and reflect a passion for colour and contrast. Pick up your self-guided tour map at the Tourist Office and follow directions to studios dotted throughout the City of Kawartha Lakes to meet the artists and see where they work their magic. Visitors can fill out a ballot at each location for a chance to win a $200 gift certificate
The Kawartha Arts Festival

The Festival is a fine art sale with over 100 artists and 2,000 original works — paintings and sculptures, tin ware, glass, pottery, jewelry, and woodcarving. Maybe a John Blanchard painting of early Ontario farm life will catch your eye, or a beautiful silver samovar. From shriner’s fezzes to Victorian period furniture, vintage ladies’ clothing to books on building your own model steam engine, the evidence of Gary’s passion for unique and classic art and antiques is sure to fascinate every visitor. The Gallery also showcases the works of local current artists. Gary spent most of his life in a century farmhouse that had been in his family for five generations. Heritage
Curiously, Fenelon Falls was named for François de Salignac de La MotheFénelon, a 17th century priest who travelled the fur trade route between Bay of Quinte and Georgian Bay, ministering to his Huron and immigrant flock. Until the early 1800s, Ojibwa people, and then fur traders, lived mainly at the waters edge; European settlers cleared the land for logging and agriculture. The Grand Trunk Railway, connected many villages and urban centres. The last train left the Fenelon Falls station in 1977. You can learn a lot about Fenelon Falls history at the Fenelon Falls Museum (Maryboro Lodge), housed at the 1837 squared-timber home of prominent settler James Wallis. Another way to learn the history of the area is to attend the fascinating public lectures offered by the Fenelon

Neighbouring Communities
• Bobcaygeon With a population of about 3,000, Bobcaygeon is a popular alternative (and closer) destination than Lindsay to get services, entertainment, programs and goods you can’t find in Fenelon Falls. Bobcaygeon is a hub for boating and tourism, and home of the Kawartha Dairy. • Burnt River Settled around the same time as Fenelon Falls, the town and river are named for a devastating fire that virtually razed the site in the 1920s. Burnt River is on a popular canoe route, and also along the Victoria Rail Trail Corridor between Fenelon Falls and Kinmount. There is no commercial district. • Cameron This village, between Fenelon Falls and Lindsay, was named after early landowner Duncan Cameron, and is home to a post office and a general store. Local farms offer naturally raised beef, fruit and vegetables, honey, and homebaked goods. • Coboconk The name derives from the aboriginal name Kioshquabeconk meaning “where the gulls nest.” A bustling summer hub and busy stop for cottagers, Coboconk is know to locals as “Coby.” It is close to 20 Explore Fenelon Falls & Area 2015
Balsam Lake Provincial Park, is home to Canada’s smallest jail and hosts annual events such as the Fresh Water Summit Festival, Coboconk Duck Derby, and a Santa Claus parade. Pancakes from a traditional recipe are served on the Saturdays of summer long weekends at Christ Church. • Kinmount At one time, six sawmills shipped products from this logging centre by rail and water. The old sawmill and train station are at the centre of what is now called Austin Sawmill Heritage Park, where you will find a farmers’ market on Saturday mornings in the warmer months. Beside the train station you will find a striking statue titled In The Presence of a Soul, and a plaque commemorating the 352 Icelanders who came to the area in 1874, the first large group to arrive in Canada from that country. Visiting the Kinmount Fair—one of the area’s biggest—on Labour Day weekend is a family tradition for many and the Kinmount Artisans Marketplace is a popular shopping destination (reduced hours in the off seasons). The renowned Highlands Cinema, with its own movie memorabilia museum, is another draw. The Dharma Centre, a 400-acre meditation retreat centre, is located east of Kinmount.

• Kirkfield Founded in the late 1800s, the name reflects the attachment of Scottish settlers to their “kirk” or church, and perhaps the Protestant work ethic built into the solid brick homes that line the main street. Kirkfield is the boyhood home of 19th century railroad magnate Sir William MacKenzie. One of the biggest attractions is the Kirkfield Lift Lock, the second highest hydraulic lift-lock in the world (the highest being in Peterborough), with a lift of 15 meters; its completion was quite an accomplishment in 1907. Kirkfield is also the location of a protected rare ecosystem, now Carden Alvar Provincial Park. The site attracts birders and others interested in the unique biodiversity of the area. • Lindsay As the largest town in the City of Kawartha Lakes, many identify Lindsay with the amalgamated municipality itself. Once a manufacturing and railway hub, Lindsay’s economy now focuses on agriculture and tourism. The Lindsay Farmers’ Market, established in 1859 and held Saturdays, 7 a.m. to 1 p.m., May through October, is one of Ontario’s longest running farmers’ markets. The downtown has maintained its historic character and a “shop local” environment. The iconic Academy Theatre continues to host top entertainment as it has for generations. In September,
the Lindsay Exhibition or LEX draws crowds to the fairgrounds for agricultural displays, the ever-popular midway, and exciting entertainment. • Norland This town is marked by Canadian Shield granite and cedars and pines reminiscent of Group of Seven paintings. Known as “The Land Between,” it sits between the City of Kawartha Lakes and the Haliburton Highlands. Norland boasts quaint traditional resorts, recreational boating, canoeing, swimming and many more ways to relax. • Rosedale Named for early settler Rosa Cameron, Rosedale, at Lock 35, is a popular point of exploration on the Trent-Severn Waterway. The canal area is known for its prime birdwatching. • Village of Sturgeon Point Incorporated in 1899, this tiny community is a popular destination for a country drive or boat excursion, not to mention weekend and summer retreats of summer residents who have maintained family cottages for generations. The Union Church (Round Church) is a remarkable structure built in 1888 and worth seeing (non-denominational services are held during summer months). Explore Fenelon Falls & Area 2015 21

Most summer evenings, the baseball diamonds of Russ Baptiste Park, just behind Jardine Funeral Home, make for a great place to mingle with locals if you like to hear the crack of a bat and ball. Wildlife is in abundance just off the beaten track, but you might be lucky enough to spot a great blue heron, or an osprey, right off your deck. Friends of the Osprey, a volunteer organization, has worked diligently over the past several years to ensure healthy habitat to keep the impressive birds coming back to nest in this area. A little further afield are: • The brand new Carden Alvar Provincial Park, a protected rare grassland ecosystem that is home to the Eastern Loggerhead Shrike and many other bird species (no camping or facilities); • Balsam Lake Provincial Park offering camping and a beautiful large beach; and • Ken Reid Conservation Area, which, in addition to picnic and group camping facilities, interpretive trails, and an osprey nest observation area, offers “Howlers Corners” an off-leash dog area. The Salvation Army Thrift Store on Murray Street is worth a visit, especially to check the silent auction display case just inside the entrance, where items of note are set apart for a monthly auction usually held the last Saturday of the month. Then head straight over to Gr88t Finds in downtown Fenelon Falls. Here Randy Meredith curates 5,000 square feet of space, representing 50 vendors, at two adjoining storefronts. You’ll find a brilliant selection of vintage items and antique furniture. And you’ll want to return again and again. By the time you get to Bobcaygeon, you may think you’ve seen everything. Chamber President Message
Fenelon Falls lives up to its reputation as “The Jewel of the Kawarthas”. We continue to sparkle with exciting landscapes, parks, docking, shopping and special events all year long. The Fenelon Falls Chamber hosts the area’s most popular Country Living Show on the first weekend in May. This event is now housed at our new Community Centre and arena. Country Living has grown out of our Home, Cottage and Recreation Show with 40% more content. On the Canada Day weekend we celebrate Midnight Madness throughout the shopping district with entertainment and shopper specials at every store. On the first of July we celebrate Canada all day long at our beachfront with fun and games and a concert culminating in a large fireworks presentation. Throughout the summer and into the autumn months the merchants of Fenelon Falls put on several events that spark the imagination of both young and old which makes the village a fun place to visit and to shop. When autumn fades into winter we prepare for the festive season 38 Explore Fenelon Falls & Area 2015
with Santa Day, the last Saturday in November. This is possibly the largest celebration of Santa in all of Canada. It is a free all-day celebration for children with Santa’s workshop, petting zoo, rides, free snacks, cookie-making, face painting and countless other activities culminating with the Santa Claus parade and fireworks presentation. Fenelon Falls also sparkles because of its many attractions. We have more than 750 feet of docking at the Lock 34 with hydro and water available. There is a park system branching out from the Trent Severn locks along the shores of Cameron Lake that leads to our beaches. The Lock 34 Park extends above the locks for picnics and below the locks for exciting views of the falls and you can cast your line in to catch pickerel or bass or muskie. We have many miles of trails along the old rail tracks that link us to Kinmount and Lindsay. The trails are open year round with summer ATV,s, bicycles, hikers and winter snowmobiles.
