The Communities in Bloom judges toured our town July 10 to 12 and assessed us in 6 categories (heritage conservation; tidiness; environmental action and sustainability; landscape; urban forestry and trees; floral). To put it simply, the judges liked what they saw! Their most telling comments about our town however, weren’t about our flowers, landscape or trails, they were about our people. The judges were impressed with the way in which this town comes together to get things done! There are so many individuals and groups in Bobcaygeon who spend time to help better our community, accomplishing much along the way. Our Communities in Bloom effort has been about uniting these groups to encourage the community to work together for the benefit of our village. The COKL, businesses, residents, cottagers and visitors did just that, worked together, bolstered each other up. We saw neighbours helping each other, community BBQs were held, volunteers pitched in and helped where they were needed and groups shared their resources – so many showed up and donated their most precious commodity, their time. Looking around at what we have accomplished in two-and-a-half short months since entering the Communities in Bloom program, we can be so proud of our village of Bobcaygeon. Individually we had achieved a great deal but working together we have accomplished so much more. It was Harry Truman who said “It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.” And that is so evident here in Bobcaygeon. We will be notified in September how our town fared in the contest, but in our hearts we know that you didn’t do it for the recognition, you did it for the community and for this you are already a winner. this action is absolutely backward and stupid, wasteful thinking as a method to reduce hydro rates. I believe the best possible method is to make Hydro using solar, wind and water, as close to the use of the energy. Consider the amount of energy lost in transporting that energy on the lines. For an example of good thinking, look at the new building on Lindsay Street in Lindsay. The solar panels on that new roof are awesome. They are clean-looking and part of the design and forward thinking. You are part of the team of wisdom running this province. You need to step up and gather your members and make choices that are reasonable, not backward. When the Hydro goes off, I realize how dependent we are on a good system and good people making good decisions to put the lights back on. I always say a “thank you” to Hydro One when lights come on and I can continue to live my life of abundance. We, as a people, need to support wise renewable energy decisions. You are our voice. Municipal Volunteers Matter
On July 20, I received, by email, a letter from City Clerk, Cathy Ritchie, terminating my tenure with the Municipal Heritage Committee, effective immediately. According to the email, this dismissal was based on a claim that I violated the Code of Conduct and/or Bylaw Protocols. The letter blindsided me, as I had good relations with all staff and committee members and, notwithstanding some ideological differences about heritage funding that were not part of committee business, I got along well with everyone. So, as I was in the dark, I attended City Hall on Monday and filed a request for access to the Clerk’s report under the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act. But I was told that, under the Municipal Act, a complaint originating in the office of the CAO and voted on in closed session of council will probably be ineligible for disclosure under FIPPA. In the City of Kawartha Lakes, then, a volunteer has no option to answer or defend themselves against accusations. This right to answer accusations is fundamental to civil society. Denying accused volunteers an opportunity to respond tramples around both the Canadian Human Rights Act and the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. The impact on the other members of the Heritage Committee has been demoralizing. I have been told that

I have always been impressed with your “Over the Back Fence” observations, but was surprised to see that in tthe July 26 edition you chose to paint Donald Trump and Doug Ford with the same brush. The Green Energy Act had to go. The Act that allowed the Ontario Government to over-ride its own laws, and that of the municipalities in order to push through approval for unneeded and inefficient wind and solar farms. That’s why we have wind farms on the Oak Ridges Moraine right here in CKL, even though the Oak Ridges Moraine Conservation Act forbade any commercial industrial development on this ecologically sensitive area. Even Kathleen Wynne admitted she had made a mistake, for which she apologized, but basically said that it was too late to cancel contracts that had already been signed. I am surprised to see from your comments that Doug Ford is cancelling hydro electric projects. Are you absolutely sure about that? With July behind us, it is time to think about the upcoming concert with the Reunion Choir in September. Two practices will be held in August and then we let our Director take a well-earned holiday before the next two practices in September. Bob has also ordered the Christmas music for us to start learning in September. By the time you read this we will have had our annual summer potluck party. It’s a chance for everyone to catch up on the latest news. Some will be on vacation but we will be thinking of them. We will be looking out for new members -- aren’t we always? If you like to sing, particularly Christmas music, please come out and join us at the Retirement Suites on a Tuesday night at 7pm in September. We would love to see you. This group not only enjoys singing but is also very friendly -- in fact we are just one big happy family! Short and sweet this week. There will be lots more news to come after the summer break.

BRAS FOR BREAST CANCER
The St. James Anglican Church Women’s Group has taken on a terrific project to raise money and awareness for Breast Cancer. They’re holding a contest for the “Best Decorated Bra”, open now and running until September 4. The idea is simple. First, pick up a registration form at Watson’s Village Shop on Colborne Street or St. James Anglican Church on Bond Street in Fenelon Falls. Pay your $10 registration fee, complete the form and make one of your old bras look even prettier. Add fabric, feathers, flowers or however you want to jazz it up. Then drop it off at the church before September 4. On September 6 at 11am, there will be a Fall Fashion Show and Lunch at St. James Anglican Church in Fenelon Falls. The bras will be the decorations, displayed around the church hall. The bra entries are anonymous, identified only by a number. The guests at the Fashion Show will vote for first, second and third place, with cash prizes. The hall will be decorated in a pink theme with pink tablecloths and napkins. There will also be brochures from the Cancer Society. The $10 registration fee for the bra entry goes to Breast Cancer Research. The proceeds from the $15 tickets for the Fashion Show and Lunch will benefit the St. James Anglican Church Women’s Group. While some of the entrants choose to keep their bras, Arlene Godby, the Community Fundraising Specialist at the Canadian Cancer Society has suggested that after the event, the bras can be sent to

Great art means different things to different people, and at the Buckhorn Fine Art Festival there is something for everyone. For more than 40 years, this world-class show and sale features works from more than 80 Canadian visual artists, sculptors, jewelers and photographers. The 2018 Buckhorn Fine Art Festival kicks off with an Opening Night celebration on Friday, August 17 from 7pm to 9:30pm. It’s an opportunity to connect with the artists, browse through the 11 outdoor galleries and take advantage of the beautiful parklike setting of the Buckhorn Community Centre. Opening night also features the musical stylings of Bridget Foley and the Pocket Kings. Catering is provided by Swanky Events and Executive Chef Doris Hiller. At this special opening night event, there will also be two opportunities for guests to enter a draw for

one of two pieces of art. For $75, guests can purchase a numbered ticket to enter a draw for a “Mystery Masterpiece” from a 2018 Art Festival exhibitor. If your ticket is drawn on Opening Night, you get to choose one from the number of pieces of artwork available. Only a limited number of tickets will be sold. As another opening night perk, Michael Dumas, one of the original artists who helped launch the Buckhorn Fine Art Festival 41 years ago, has donated a piece for a second Opening Night prize draw. The original graphite study, “Looking Out”, has a value of $1,000 and is the featured painting in this year’s Special Exhibit, “The Lives of Birds”. Opening night ticket holders are automatically entered into this draw and additional tickets are available for $75 each. Winners of the draws must be onsite at the time of the draw to claim their prizes. The Festival continues on Saturday, August 18 and Sunday, August 19, from 10am to 5pm each day. Part of the vision of the Buckhorn Fine Art Festival has always been to encourage the development of creativity in the visual arts, as well as recognize and support artistic talent. For many years, the Festival has held an Art Competition and entries are displayed throughout the Festival weekend. Entries come in from teenage artists (ages 13 to 19), from individuals developing their art skills and in a new medium (2 years or less) and from individuals who identify themselves as hobby or professional. Showcasing their individual creative style, design and techniques, a panel of judges awards prizes in the Teenage Class, Novice Class and Hobby Artist Class. In addition, there are awards in four categories in the Open Class, depending on the medium.

THE ARTIVITY ZONE
The concept behind the annual ARTivity Zone at the Buckhorn Fine Art Festival is to nurture artistic creativity for children and adults. There are a variety of interactive art activities, where they can freely explore, experience and use their imagination, while drawing inspiration from nature. Self-directed activities are expressed by “studios” for painting, drawing, collage, manipulatives, and a light exploration cave. The “A-Zone” also provides a cool resting area and a location for drying work and display. Months of planning and hours of hard work go into making the Buckhorn Fine Art Festival the success that it is. The ARTivity Zone is successful thanks to the dedication of the volunteers that embrace the concept and work in the area throughout the BFAF weekend. ARTivity Zone sponsors are Crayola Canada and Gerri’s Art and Craft Supplies. The Ontario Early Years Centre in Lindsay was also a large contributor of equipment used at the ARTivity Zone. Be sure to stop in while you’re at the Festival.

HELPING THE WILDLIFE
As commercial and residential growth continues to explode, our wildlife is being pushed aside into smaller and smaller spaces. Sadly, a large number of wild birds, mammals & reptiles regularly fall victim to road accidents, human cruelty and lack of suitable habitat and food. As the need for rescue of these orphaned and injured animals has increased, enter Shades of Hope. Shades of Hope is licensed by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Canadian Wildlife Services, serving areas throughout south central Ontario. Located in Pefferlaw, their mission is to nurture, treat and rehabilitate injured and orphaned native wildlife with the goal of releasing healthy animals back into their natural habitats. They have made the commitment to provide veterinary care, proper nourishment and a safe place until the animals can be released. They take animals from all over Ontario. Recently they were able to rehab an injured opossum that two boys in Lindsay were playing with. The organization receives up to 100 phone calls a day from the community who need help to help a variety of wildlife, from birds to fox. As a registered charitable organization, Shades of Hope depends on donations to continue their good work, and volunteers to help take care of the animals. We went to a few industry sources to find out what’s important when tasting beer. At the end of the day, it all comes down to what you like in taste, but if you’re looking to try something new at the Bobcaygeon Craft Beer & Food Festival on August 18, here are some handy tips.
Appearance
When the beer is poured into the glass, take note of the colour of it. Don’t be fooled by how dark it is. It’s possible to have a dark-coloured beer that tastes and feels light or a light coloured beer that has rich and complex flavours. The colour of the beer is directly related to its malt content, which will affect the taste of the beer, not its alcoholic content.
Aroma
The aroma of craft beer comes mainly from the hops, malt and yeast strain. Many of today’s craft beers feature fruity and floral scents that add to the initial reaction to the product. So before you take a sip, put your nose to the beer. BEER AND CIDER.

NOVICE LAWNBOWLERS OFF TO PROVINCIAL CHAMPIONSHIP: The Bobcaygeon Lawn Bowling Club is pleased that Bobcaygeon will be represented in the Ontario Novice Championships. After qualifying in the District 14 Playdowns, this team will be going to Sarnia to compete in the Provincial Playdowns on August 11th and 12th. The term “Novice” means those who have bowled for under 5 years. The team consists of Ray Hull (skip), Leo Kelly (Vice) and Larry Holden (lead). We wish the team all the best in their endeavours. The Bobcaygeon and District Horticultural Society thanks the many individuals and businesses who contributed to our very successful Heritage Garden Tour. The 350 attendees were certainly treated to a busy day which included admission to Kawartha Settlers’ Village and the Boyd Heritage Museum. Each year local businesses support our tour in myriad ways. They kindly sell our tickets, donate door prizes, sponsor ads, offer lunch discounts to tour participants and provide food for the dessert tea. Displays provided by Kathy Martin (herbs), Aron Muscott (heritage plants), Sandi McNeil (basketry) and Sherry Summerside (beekeeping) continued our heritage theme. The music of John Max & His One Man Band created the perfectly relaxed atmosphere of tea time at Settlers’ Village. The Minden Master Gardeners each year offer expert advice to our visitors. However, it is the gardens that draw folks from both neighbouring and distant communities. Though diverse in style, the 2018 gardens share common elements: beautiful plants and creative flair. Our sincere gratitude to these gracious garden owners: Julie and Glenn Williams, Charles Pitcher, Linda Wesselink, Diane Tremblay and John Max, Ruth and Brian Eberts, Judy Pinkerton and Cam Butler. Proceeds generated by the garden tour are entirely devoted to beautification of the village and to promotion of horticultural activities. Exercise, eat well, and get a good night’s sleep. That’s great advice we hear over and over again. All three are vital to physical health and well-being, but proper rest, on a regular basis isn’t just a good idea, it is essential. Here is what better sleep can mean to you: 1 Sleep can improve your memory: When you’re really tired it can be hard to remember things. This is your brain telling you that it’s not getting enough down time. When you sleep well, your brain gets busy sorting and storing your memories, creating pathways to help you access them later. Getting more quality sleep will help you access those memories and process things better. 2 Sleep can improve your mood: Lack of sleep can make us more agitated, so we’re more likely to snap at a neighbour or be grumpy with a loved one, neither of which is a good thing. The better you sleep the better your ability to stay calm, cool and controlled. 3 Sleep helps keep your heart healthy: A regular sleep schedule can help to lower the levels of stress and inflammation to your cardiovascular system, which in turn can reduce your chances of a stroke or heart condition. 4 Sleep can be a painkiller: If you’re suffering pain from a recent injury like a sprained wrist or ankle, getting plenty of sleep can actually make you hurt less. EPI-PEN SHORTAGE
Following Health Canada’s most recent communication regarding a shortage of EpiPen (0.3 mg) and EpiPen Jr (0.15 mg) auto-injectors, Pfizer Canada has advised Health Canada that supply of EpiPen in the 0.3 mg format is expected to be very limited at pharmacies during the month of August. This means that while some pharmacies may currently have some inventory on-hand, it will likely be depleted in the coming days or weeks. Pfizer Canada does not expect to be able to provide new supply until the end of August. The company has also advised that, at this time, they continue to be able to supply EpiPen Jr (0.15 mg); however, the supply is limited and is being carefully managed at the national level. EpiPen and EpiPen Jr are used to deliver an emergency treatment of adrenaline (epinephrine) to patients who are at risk or have a history of life-threatening allergic reactions (anaphylaxis). There are currently no alternative auto-injectors available on the market in Canada.

On Saturday, August 11, people will join Mark Fevang in his 15th Annual Walk to raise money and awareness for homelessness. Over the past 14 years, Mark has raised more than $97,000 for A Place Called Home that provides shelter and 24/7 support services to the homeless and those at risk of being homeless. There’s a 5K walk and a 10K walk that are open to anyone with $25 in pledges or a $30 registration fee for others. Registration is at 8am at Victoria Park/Lindsay Farmers’ Market for the 10K Walk or at 10am at 363 Kent Street West (the A&W parking lot) for the 5K walk. Help Mark reach his goal of $15,000. WHAT CONSUMERS WANT TO HEAR
As hearing-instrument manufacturers continue to make technical advancements that lead to ever smaller and “smarter” products, consumers find they have more reasons to purchase a hearing device.
