More than 250 people gathered in downtown Bobcaygeon to celebrate a victorious ending to the 6-year Dewdney Mountain quarry battle. Thanks to Line Pinard, Pat Warren, Joy Mattinson, Elaine Bird, Glenna Burns, Diane Tilley and Kathleen Seymour-Fagan for organizing this fundraiser. SHORT-TERM RENTALS

If the Council of the City of Kawartha Lakes follows the advice of City staff, short-term residential rental units will continue to be allowed throughout the City with little or no oversight. You had better hope that the rental landlord in your neighbourhood is committed to maintaining good public relations. If not, you are in for

the fight of your life and you will not be able to rely on the City police or municipal law enforcement staff for timely, effective relief. So you may ask, what is the problem with a person renting out their residence for a few days in order to make a little cash? In some cases nothing; in other cases, such as an absentee landlord who has purchased a residence simply to make a quick buck by renting it out as many times as possible to multiple individuals who have little or no regard or vested interest in the community, the associated problems can be overwhelming -- problems associated with public safety, noise and nuisance are pervasive. Just ask your neighbours in Rolling Hills Estates, View Lake and Kirkfield, just to name a few. While it is arguable that there is nothing inherently problematic about short-term residential rentals, it doesn’t mean that there aren’t issues. As with anything, the bad actors spoil the situation and all too often a rented home or cottage becomes an out-of-hand party that causes havoc in an otherwise quiet neighbourhood. It is a matter of fact that Airbnb, HomeAway, Flipkey and hundreds of other rental websites have turned residential rentals into a booming underground commercial economy at the expense of long-term residents, neighbourhood character and quality of life of neighbours. Long-term residents are moving out as a result, and the residential character of some traditional neighbourhoods is slowly being destroyed. A number of progressive Ontario municipalities have already recognized the potential problems associated with this new underground economy and have taken very real and positive steps to curb the bad behaviour of irresponsible hosts and renters. Kawartha Lakes City staff admittedly recognize the issues but argue that the issues are just not pervasive enough for City Council to act. This despite the fact that staff readily admit that they are not equipped to respond in a timely fashion to current citizen by-law complaints particularly during evening and weekend hours let alone dealing with any new by-laws or regulations. So what is their answer to this growing problem – DO NOTHING – MAINTAIN THE STATUS QUO! As proud residents of the City of Kawartha Lakes we can only hope that our elected representatives are more responsive to the needs of our community and direct staff to bring forward a report setting out an action plan that balances the needs of residents, businesses and stakeholders alike. The July 17 CKL council meeting was dominated by multiple deputations dealing with a wide variety of issues including boat houses in need of repair, a building permit issue, and a zoning battle royal involving the Iron Horse Ranch banquet facility in Manvers Township.

Boathouse ordered torn down on Cameron Lake

The Land Management Committee declared the boathouse to be in a state of disrepair, and ordered that the building be removed at the owner’s expense. The owners countered by saying that they would invest $10,000 to upgrade and repair the building. Neighbours were fully supportive of the boathouse upgrade planned by the owners. Staff was ordered by council to enter into a licensing agreement with the owners that stated if the boathouse was repaired in a timely manner the structure could stay.

The owners of the boathouse had applied to the City for permits to rebuild both their dock and boathouse. The City told the owners that they could replace the dock, but that the boathouse could not be saved as it was in a bad state of repair. The owners admitted that this last winter had been very hard on their waterfront, and that the boathouse needed work. They requested two months to repair the boathouse as they were having problems locating qualified labour. Council ordered staff to enter into a licensing agreement with the owners that said if the boathouse was repaired within the two-month window offered by the owners, it could stay.

The deputant claimed that the City had cancelled his building permit, despite in the opinion of the deputant not having the protocol in place to carry this act out unless the property was abandoned. The deputant has a technical disagreement with the City, which he wanted to appeal to the province. With the City cancelling his building permit, he cannot appeal to the province regarding his conflict with local officials. Councillor Breadner appealed to council to reinstate the building permit to allow for the appeal to the province. Mayor Letham stated that Breadner’s request was out of order as the City cannot overturn the decisions made by their Chief Building Official, who claimed the permit has become stale dated and the build was not being actively pursued. The ensuing discussion became quite heated between Breadner and Letham as the confrontation spiralled out of control. Council backed City staff, leaving the deputant with the only option of reapplying for a new building permit at some substantial additional costs, and probably forfeiting half of the $8,000 he had paid for the first permit.

Rezoning of Iron Horse Ranch property in Manvers Township

The Sutcliffe group, represented by their lawyer Leonard Siegel, asked the City to act on the rezoning request for the Iron Horse Ranch property. The group behind the venture have been using the property to host weddings for more than five years without the proper zoning in place. Multiple neighbourhood complaints about noise coming from the property forced the City to become involved and ordered the rezoning of the property to allow a wedding venue/banquet hall. City staff stated that the Sutcliffe Group, behind the redevelopment /rezoning request had met all the City requirements for the rezoning to occur. The next stage would be a site plan agreement with the City that would determine the operating rules for the banquet hall, and how many weddings could be hosted. Several neighbours, supported by Councillors Stauble, Martin, Junkin, and Pollard spoke strongly against the rezoning because of the site being prime farm land, and theoretically not eligible for that kind of development. Noise was a major concern as some neighbours claimed you could hear music from the property almost three kilometres away. Others claimed the site lay on a floodplain making the building of a

banquet hall and outbuilding against all accepted code. The vote hung in the balance until Mayor Letham weighed in with a pro-development stance stating that the Sutcliffe Group had done their due diligence, and it was time that the City was inviting people in to experience and enjoy the CKL, rather than putting up walls. Letham accused council of looking for a reason to avoid approving the project that wasn’t there. After almost two hours of deputations and debate, the Iron Horse Ranch rezoning was approved 11-6 by recorded vote.

CHAMBER RENOS UNDERWAY

The renovation project has begun to retrofit City of Kawartha Lakes Council Chambers for the new Council that will be elected this October. Council has been reduced from 16 Councillors to eight Councillors. This change, along with the urgent restoration of the plaster and crown moldings in the ceiling of the room, are primary reasons driving the renovation. The project has also been designed to address the accessibility of Council Chambers. The alterations on the main floor will accommodate several more public seats as well as a larger accessible seating section. Sections of the balcony will be outfitted with chairs instead of benches and will include the media section and audio/visual station. Improved audio/ visual equipment and lighting will also enhance the experience of the public in attendance. “We looked at a dozen different design options and have hand-picked the features of the new chamber. The theme of reuse and recycle will keep the look and feel of our historic building while being environmentally responsible and cost conscious,” explained Mayor Andy Letham. The new Council Chambers will be unveiled at the inaugural meeting of the newly elected Council on December 3, 2018. Effective immediately, all Council and Committee meetings will take place in the Victoria Room on the second floor of City Hall. Seating is limited, and if required, the Weldon Room next door will be available for overflow seating. Cogeco television will not be broadcasting meetings held in the Victoria Room. Heading into the municipal election on October 22, The Kawartha Promoter will provide profiles of all candidates in the City of Kawartha Lakes and Trent Lakes. Our political reporter, Kirk Winter, will conduct the interviews and write the profiles.

City of Kawartha Lakes - Ward One

Candidates: Rob Macklem, Raymonde Blais-Couture, Emmett Yeo and Don Logan Population centres: Dalrymple, Sebright, Bolsover, Kirkfied, Coboconk and Norland Geographic limits: Balsam Lake and Palestine Road in the south, Rama Township in the west, Old Victoria Road in the north, Somerville Concession 7 in the east Ward characteristics: Least populous but geographically largest ward in the city This ward election promises to be a most interesting four candidate race, with both Macklem and Yeo the sitting councillors from the old 16-member council, running in the same amalgamated ward for the new eight member council. Blais-Couture, a resident of McGuires Beach Road and President of the McGuires Property Owners Association, will run on a platform of improved roads, job creation and improved social housing for low income city residents. He wants to improve the public profile of the CKL to attract investment and residential expansion. Blais-Couture and his wife are also very passionate about finding a solution to the short-term rental issue that respects the rights of both full-time residents and visitors to the City.

Macklem, a local business owner in the old Ward One, and one of the two incumbent councillors running for re-election, sees the priorities slightly differently from Blais-Couture. While Macklem agrees that roads in the sprawling riding are an important priority along with ditching and brushing, he also brings up the thorny issue of landfill site lifespan. Macklem says Ward One is fortunate that their landfill site still has room, but planning for the end of its useful life needs to begin now. He also wants to see the consolidation of by-laws and policies so that everyone across the City is treated equally. Yeo, a construction company owner and Norland resident, is the sitting councillor from the old Ward Two. Yeo and Macklem agree on two of the most pressing issues for the residents of the new Ward One; improved roads and uniform by-laws across the City. Yeo says that significant strides have been made, and will be made, to improve road quality right across the ward. Yeo has spoken at length at council about the need for the reduction of red tape in the Planning department to help major building projects move forward that will broaden the areaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s tax base. Yeo hopes that a more business-friendly stance will improve investment and encourage population growth. Don Logan did not respond to requests from The Kawartha Promoter for information, and we are sorry we cannot provide more information about Don and his campaign. Blais-Couture, Yeo and Macklem all agree that being the new councillor for Ward One will require a lot of time, commitment and the ability to balance the needs of the seasonal and full time residents.

CELEBRATE CANADA'S HERITAGE

Some may think that Canada Day is the only time we can celebrate this great country. That's never been farther from the truth! On Saturday, August 4, Fenelon Falls Live presents Simcoe Day, when 1812 comes to TSW Island and Water Street. An encampment will be set up on the Island, depicting the 1812 Militia Regiment that fought with the British against the Americans. Visitors are welcome to wander the Encampment throughout the day where they can see soldiers, women and children going about their daily activities. The militia will be training and drilling preparing for a possible American Incursion. There will be re-enactments at 11am and 1:30pm, with a 10-minute mini-militia after each session, during which one of the sergeants with some help will run kids through some drills. The 11am will be a “militia muster” or call up. The 1:30 presentation will be a demonstration of drill and musket firing step-by-step. The exciting conclusion against “the The Promoter Americans” is expected to occur about 4pm. 9.725 Visitors 3.06x are encouraged to visit the militia camp and speak with all of the re-enactors. The public is advised that the muskets can be loud and that they may need to take appropriate measures if they are hearing sensitive. All day, The Maryboro Lodge/Fenelon Museum presents a special exhibit celebrating the Abolition of Slavery in Canada 225 years ago. At 3:30pm, there will be an official ceremony featuring Lord Simcoe. Other activities throughout the day include: • The famous 45-piece Peterborough Concert Band performing a 90-minute concert commencing at 2pm. • Free ice cream and pop corn as you wander along the street. • A Beer Garden featuring music from 11am to 8pm • Demonstrations of spinning wheels, apple pressing and butter churning from 11am to 4:30pm along Water Street. • Antique outboard motor display A free shuttle bus will run between the Village and the Auto Show that's taking place at the Fairgrounds. You can also take a free wagon ride from downtown to the Museum for their special exhibit. Please note that Water Street will be closed from 11am to 8pm for the event. Wow, this summer has been amazing so far with so many activities and we are only half way through July! I want to take this opportunity to thank the hard working Horticultural Society of Bobcaygeon for creating such beautiful floral displays around town. I know there are many more activities planned for the upcoming weeks, but I wanted to thank all of the wonderful people who have supported the Bobcaygeon Lions and our community over the last few weeks. A huge thanks to Max Miller and the organizers of the Blues Concert. Our Lions had a great time, especially our Dancing Duck (LOL). The Bikefest was another great event that brought many awesome people to our community and were a wonderful support for our Bobcaygeon Lions BBQ and purchasing our Duck Race tickets. Many thanks to the organizers. Hope to assist you again next year. Now to the Duck Race! It was a great success with all tickets sold for the very first time and all ducks reaching the finish line in good form. We only had one Lion member who tried to go swimming head first trying to get the wandering ducks. We did actually have a funny question from a spectator who asked us if we were using real ducks. To all animal lovers, no we use cute little plastic ducks. There is no harm done to any live ducks. All winners have been contacted and have received their winnings. Thank you everyone who supported us in buying a ticket. Even if you didn’t win, your money will be going to our various charities that we support. The Bobcaygeon Lions recently had the opportunity to assist our own Communities in Bloom committee in cleaning our lovely town. Hopefully, Bobcaygeon will be judged as the most beautiful community that we know it is. Thank you to all of the hardworking members of the committee. You are wonderful!!! Don’t forget that we are holding Monday night Bingo every week at our air conditioned, accessible hall on Main St., doors opening at 5:15 pm. Awesome refreshments are available. For those people who are interested in a little wilder event, the Bobcaygeon Lions will be selling our awesome BBQ and refreshments at “Thunder in the Hills” at Ray’s Place just south of Minden. This is part of the TMR racing circuit involving off road vehicles from huge built buggies to basically stock vehicles, involving men and women. It is part of a race circuit that has been ongoing over the summer. It will be an amazing event held on Saturday, August 25. It used to be held in Parry Sound so we are very fortunate to have it so close to home, just up 121. We are hoping for an outstanding attendance. My husband and I recently had to travel to the Toronto area, thankfully for only a day. Coming home to Bobcaygeon reinforced our love for our community. Thank you to all of the wonderful citizens who also appreciate Bobcaygeon and help to make it such a great place to live.

SHAKESPEARE AT THE VILLAGE

For its 24th season of theatre under the stars in communities across Ontario, Driftwood Theatre is proud to present one of Shakespeare’s most enduring comedies, renamed. Set in 1918, Rosalynde (or, As You Like It) tells the story of young Rosalynde. It takes place when Canadian women were finally granted the right to vote in federal elections. When circumstances force Rosalynde from her home in the city, she flees into the unknown wilds of the forest where she sets out on a journey of identity, self-discovery and love - learning that to carve her own path, she needs to break the rules. Rosalynde incorporates live music, physical performance, and puppetry designed by production designer Sheree Tams and puppeteer and cast member Eric Woolfe. The Ontario tour comes to Bobcaygeon on Friday, August 3 at Kawartha Settlers’ Village, 8 Dunn Street. Admission is Pay What You Can. The performance begins at 7:30pm.

At the June 28 Annual General Meeting, the Community Care Foundation was pleased to salute three individuals who were presented with our Shining Star awards for outstanding efforts in their roles with the organization. • Volunteer driver Jane Junkin was recognized for her recent outstanding effort to support a client who experienced medical difficulties during a ride. • Loraine Defreitas was saluted for her longtime volunteer contributions at programs including Diners Clubs, and for her valued assistance at special events and in several Community Care offices. • Community Care’s Home Support Services Program Manager Kerri Daley received a Shining Star for her expertise, guidance and commitment to the organization, especially through a recent challenging period of personnel turnover in her area. On December 1, 2017, the MicroFIT program ended, Hydro providers across the Province no longer pay homeowners or business to produce electricity. The MicoFIT Program was launched in 2009 as part of the Ontario government’s efforts to increase renewable energy in the province. Electricity consumers in Ontario who produce some of their own power from a renewable resource may take advantage of the “net metering” initiative. Net metering allows you to send excess electricity you generate from renewable resources to the distribution system for a credit toward your energy costs. In essence, it’s a “trade” of electricity you supply against electricity you consume. How does it work? Once you’re connected to the distribution system, your local distribution company will continue to read your meter just as they do now (though they may need to change the meter in order to be able to record the information they need) and then

WHAT DOES THE CNACC DO IN OUR COMMUNITIES?

While the Coboconk, Norland & Area Chamber of Commerce is still relatively new to the area, the organization comprised of 12 Board of Directors (who are volunteers!) and one part-time staff person have worked hard to encourage economic growth, boost job creation, and benefit our communities with various projects, events, and beautification efforts throughout all four seasons. Some examples of projects undertaken by the Chamber are: the new public docks, accessibility ramp, and boat ramp in Coboconk and Norland; delivery of educational workshops for small businesses; presenting the annual Canada’s Fresh Water Summit Festival and the annual Santa Claus Parade; and advocating for more resources for our communities. Since it was established in 2014, the CNACC has leveraged more than $425,000 in funding for community improvements in Coboconk, Norland & Rosedale. It is the goal of the CNACC to help local businesses and communities prosper. “Our Chamber is a little bit unique in its focus,” says CNACC General Manager Jennifer Wilson. “We serve our local businesses and advocate with the City on local issues like all Chambers do, but we also spend a lot of time raising funds for beautification projects and to build local infrastructure, and hosting events to draw the community together.” Much of the success of the events, projects, and July 26, 2018 - The Kawartha Promoter

initiatives are due to the generous volunteers and community groups who have worked closely with the CNACC and have dedicated their time and resources to the development of their communities. “If there was only one thing we would like for you to know, it’s that we are here to work together with you - our members, other local community groups, and residents - to help make our communities better,” says Wilson. “None of us can do it alone – we need to pull together in a focused effort to make a real and long-term difference in our communities. After taking a year off from festivities in 2017, the Norland Summer Festival was back for their 2018 celebration! Over the July 14/15 weekend, the Norland Summer Festival took place in Ward Memorial Park with great activities for community residents and visitors. The LOB ball and Horseshoe Tournaments were the highlights of the Saturday activities, with various vendor booths and children’s activities throughout the park! As always, the Saturday night dance was an entertaining event with live music provided by Live on the Line. The Festival continued into Sunday where there was a delicious Chili Cook Off, an exciting Demolition Derby, and more fun children’s activities! It was a successful weekend full of small town charm. The Norland Summer Festival Committee would like to send a sincere thank-you to all of the wonderful volunteers who made these events happen. The Committee would also like to thank the generous contributions from local residents and businesses towards the Loonie Auction and, of course, the sponsors who made the Demolition Derby possible. Your hard work and contributions do not go unnoticed! Join us next year for the 12th annual Norland Summer Festival on the second weekend of July. Health & Wellness 5 STEPS TO A HEALTHY LIFESTYLE

Exercising in the summer heat can be a problem if you’re not careful, particularly in extreme heat and humidity. But the heat should not stop you from living a healthy lifestyle. Here are five simple ways to have a healthier day. 1. Do Something You Love: If your passion is playing piano, writing short stories, or knitting, make time to do it, even if just for a short time. Doing what you love will bring a sense of joy to your day. 2. Practice Gratitude: Make it a habit to take a few minutes every day to jot down two or three things you are grateful for. Regardless of how small the things may be, the important part is truly feeling grateful. Practicing gratitude helps you see the

goodness in your life and can increase your overall sense of well-being. 3. Drink more water: Drinking plenty of water throughout the day flushes toxins from your body and boosts the immune system. Someone who is well hydrated is less likely to get sick. And who wouldn’t rather feel healthy the majority of the time. 4. Take a Walk in Nature: Spending time outside in nature can be very refreshing and renewing. Even just a few minutes of sunlight and fresh air can brighten your day, especially if you spend most of your hours indoors. In extreme heat, plan your walks for early morning or late evening, when temperatures are cooler. 5. Eat Healthy: It’s much more challenging to feel truly happy when you don’t feel well. But when you make healthy food choices, you feel better both physically and mentally. Make a habit of slowing down to eat. Take small bites and give yourself time to feel the texture and absorb the flavours in each bite. This will help to prevent overeating as you’re more likely to hear your body telling you it’s full. A few small changes can make a big difference to help live a healthier lifestyle.

In 2003, the City of Kawartha Lakes (CKL) recognized the need for family doctors in our community. A volunteer committee was established to address this need. This committee evolved into the Kawartha Lakes Health Care Initiative (KLHCI) and is a registered non-profit, charitable organization. KLHCI has successfully recruited 36 family doctors to CKL since 2004 and is the lead organization for family doctor recruitment and retention in the region. KLHCI plays an important role for our community. By working hard to attract and retain family physicians, our community will remain healthy and vibrant. However, the need for family doctors continues and in 2018, CKL still requires seven more family doctors to meet local demand. This does not include the ‘silver tsunami’ of upcoming retirements so the need remains critical! KLHCI needs your help! Although KLHCI appreciates the on-going funding received from both CKL and the Ross Memorial Hospital, the amount of that funding remains about the same as it was in 2004. In order to continue the successful recruitment and retention programs, we require additional funding in the way of sponsorships from our local businesses and charitable donations from the citizens. TAKING A MEASURE OF SATISFACTION

According to an online survey of hearing-instrument consumers, overall satisfaction increased from 74% to 81% over a recent six-year period. It is interesting to point out that users of newer instruments were more satisfied with their experience than those equipped with older models. The satisfaction rate stood at 91% for hearing instruments obtained most recently, 77% for hearing instruments purchased 2-5 years earlier, and 74% for hearing instruments that were obtained 6 or more years earlier. Higher consumer satisfaction with their hearing instruments is also reflected by the fact that fewer survey respondents (3%) report leaving their instruments unused “in the drawer” than they did six years earlier, when the unused statistic stood at 12%. ‘LAKE LIFE’ IN BUCKHORN

Renowned Canadian artists David Grieve, Peter Rotter and Joe Sampson have joined forces to present an exhibit of new works depicting the areas surrounding their lake homes in the Kawarthas. Gallery On The Lake is proud to present ‘Lake Life,’ an exhibit that captures the artists’ connections of the area’s natural beauty. David Grieve’s paintings offer bold brush strokes with vibrant or sometimes muted colour palettes of his beloved Jack Lake. Peter Rotter has been connected to Stony Lake since childhood, and now has a lakeside home on its shores. Peter’s artwork offers a more minimalist approach to lake and forest scenes that evoke past and current memories of this most iconic landmark in the Kawarthas. Joe Sampson is known as the “Water Guy”. He is renowned for his paintings of quiet lakes; roaring surf and the islands, bays and shorelines in Canada, the Caribbean or the Mediterranean where he was born. In addition to collaborating in their love of painting and exhibiting together, the three artists consider themselves best of friends, and constantly provide each other with support and inspiration. Here’s something I don’t understand about people. When there are signs everywhere about a fire ban in place, what makes them think it’s okay to have a campfire or light off fireworks? The recent forest fires in our area have me scratching my head, wondering what problem people have in comprehending the severe consequences of a fire out of control. All it takes is a spark from the sparkler or a wayward ash from the campfire to set off the dry brush, grass or trees. Granted, several of the fires fought recently were caused by lightening, but that just goes to underscore how little it takes to devastate an area. Fire officials throughout the Kawartha Lakes

and Peterborough County sent out a news release to media asking people who smoke to be more vigilant in putting out their butts. Use a deeper ashtray outside, do not put cigarettes out in the garden or flower pots (the vermiculite in the soil does burn – I learned the hard way), make sure if you’re smoking outside that the cigarette is extinguished and, above all, don’t throw your butts out of your car window. I’m sorry you’re not able to enjoy a campfire while you’re here on vacation. But please obey the fire ban until officials say we’ve had enough rain to soak the soil. Lives of our wildlife, the beautiful environment you came here to see and some of our homes may depend on it.

GET YOUR RAIN BARREL

There are a number of benefits to using rain barrels to harvest water, and Kawartha Conservation is giving you two more: Great prices and the opportunity to help others, while you help yourself. Kawartha Conservation’s 2018 Rain Barrel sale orders end on Monday, August 20. Interested residents who have not already ordered their rain barrels or accessories have until end of day on August 20 to take advantage of the great pricing offered and finalize their 2018 orders. “This is a perfect opportunity to order rain barrels and accessories at great prices,” said Stewardship Coordinator Holly Shipclark. “People can order 180 litre (47 Gallon) or 220 Litre (55 Gallon) Terracotta rain barrels and a number of accessories from wooden rain barrel stands to downspout diverters, hose and more.” The annual rain barrel sale benefits Kawartha Conservation while providing area residents with a number of rain barrel options. “There are so many benefits to using water collected from rain barrels,” said Ms. Shipclark. “Rainwater is

much better for your plants and soil which makes it perfect for watering hangers and baskets, and it also helps keep your water bills lower in urban areas with water systems.” With the extreme low water conditions in 2016, and the already dry start to summer 2018, more and more people are recognizing the value of rain water harvesting and the cost benefits to using naturally occurring rain water to water lawns and gardens rather than relying on water from the tap. All rain barrels and accessories will be ready for pick up on Saturday, August 25 from 11am to 2pm at the Kawartha Conservation field centre, next to the administrative centre. COMMUNITY CARE SUPPORT

In June, Community Care’s Specialized Transportation program was thrilled to be the recipient of the 100 Men of Kawartha Lakes’ latest fundraising gift. The group proudly presented a cheque for $3,900. Community Care is very grateful for this helpful and meaningful support. The 100 Men of Kawartha Lakes group meets four times/year to select a local organization to support. Three short presentations are made from nominated organizations, then each member casts a vote in support of one of the groups. Everyone then donates $100 to the group receiving the most votes. The funds from the 100 Men will specifically support the upkeep and retrofitting of Community Care’s specialized transportation vans that enable us to safely transport individuals in wheelchairs or stretchers.

Fenelon Landfill Pollinator Project showing signs of success

Did you know that in 2017, the City of Kawartha Lakes was designated as a Bee City? We were the 7th City in Canada to be designated, and the third in Ontario, joining Toronto and Stratford. Along with the designation comes the responsibility to encourage residents to support bees and other pollinators on both public and private land and foster environmental awareness around this issue. The initiative is led by the City of Kawartha Lakes Environmental Advisory Committee (CKLEAC) consisting of community leaders, city staff and local experts. This time last year, the committee kicked off the Fenelon Landfill Pollinator Project which saw 1.5 acres of decommissioned soil planted with a pollinatorfriendly seed mix. The seed mix was made to attract pollinators such as bees and butterflies in order to boost their populations, which have shown drastic declines in recent years. Now in its first growing season, the seed mix is self-propagating and has attracted many pollinators. In the future, the hope for the seed mix is that it will help reduce erosion of the landfill cover and stop waste infiltration by capturing rainfall. This project is an ongoing pilot approved by the Ministry of Environment, Conservation and Parks. Fleming College has provided assistance by having students actively monitor the project’s effectiveness in attracting pollinators. The Fenelon Landfill Pollinator Project uses a pollinator monitoring protocol that is being used throughout the province to advance knowledge on pollinator health. needed items to the women and children staying in Victoria’s shelter, some who arrive in the middle of the night with only the clothes on their backs. The first “home” was a small loft area above the original shelter, and when they outgrew that space, they moved to a church basement. Over the years, the team of volunteers and Vicky’s itself have grown exponentially, but still with the same purpose behind everything they do. Today, Vicky’s operates out of a 6,000 square foot store and warehouse, with a team of over 100 amazing, dedicated volunteers, some of whom have been there since the beginning! Through Vicky’s programs, every year women and children are provided with more than 1,000 clothing vouchers and more than 50 start-up housewares orders. Vicky’s also helps raise much-needed funds so that Women’s Resources can continue offering shelter, counselling, and other supports to women and children who are facing abuse in our community. Everyone is invited to come and help celebrate 25 years of Vicky’s Values on Saturday, July 28 from 10am to 4pm. It’s their Customer Appreciation Day & 25th Anniversary Celebrations where they will have special prizes, refreshments, and of course a fabulous sale!
