CLOSING OUR DOORS

After 55 years in business, owned and operated by the same family in the same location, Watson's Village Shop is closing its doors in Fenelon Falls. Rhonda has decided to retire. The shop is currently having a retirement sale and everything must be cleared out! We will honour all store credits and gift certificates. If you are not able to find an item from remaining stock, refunds will be gladly given. All of us at Watson's Village Shop would like to take this opportunity to thank each and every one of you who shopped in our little store. We always appreciated you coming in and never took that for granted. We have seen generations of the same families shopping at The Village Shop. We've seen children growing into adults with babies of their own. We've had 10th, 20th, 30th, 40th and 50th anniversary parties with so many best wishes. How amazing is all of that? We've had happy chats, sad chats, hugs and laughs. We've shared coffees, treats, and so much friendship. All of this will be truly missed. So from the bottom of our hearts, “THANK YOU.” We live in a beautiful little town, so try and keep it local, try to shop at the stores and services that hire your children, sponsor your sports, support your churches and community events. This is what keeps the small towns alive! All the best to each and every one of you! Sincerely Rhonda Watson STORE HOURS WEDNESDAY TO SATURDAY – 9AM TO 5PM

OVER THE BACK FENCE

We had a whallop from Mother Nature last week, reminding us it was still winter. By my rough calculations, we got more than 30cm of snow over the course of 24 hours. I was lucky enough to be able to work from home so I didn’t have to drive through blowing snow and drifts. Sometimes that drive between Buckhorn and Bobcaygeon can be dicey so I stayed off the roads. With the amount of snow falling, and the road conditions to begin with, I applaud our plow drivers for their efforts. But I was astonished to see some rather rude comments from people on Facebook about the lack of plowing on the side roads. During an event such as this, the roads maintenance folks make sure that major roadways are cleared. The roads with the most traffic – i.e., highways, main streets, etc. -- get first dibs. Roads leading to the hospitals, medical centres and highways are priorities. We have to be patient and wait our turn.

BUILD YOUR TRUST AROUND US.

On another note, I was surprised to see so many vehicles covered in snow driving down the road. Windshields and rear and side windows hadn’t been cleared. While it’s not a traffic offence to have snow on your vehicle, if you don’t have a clear view you could get a ticket along with a $110 fine. Not only that, but those trucks and SUVs with snow piled on the roof need to take a brush out and clear it off. We’ve seen the photos of smashed windshields in some instances, please clear off your vehicle so you, and others, can be safe. editor@thepromoter.ca

DOUG WILLIAMS RETURNS TO BOBCAYGEON

By Glenna Burns

Gidigaa Migizi (Doug Williams) is returning to Bobcaygeon Library on Saturday, March 14 at 10:30 am to tell more Minaajim – Good Stories from Curve Lake First Nation. As Gidigga Migizi says, “This time of year – when the lake is frozen and the snow blankets the earth – is very important to Anishinaabe people. It is a sacred time because that’s when the spirits of the sky are closest: the Pleiades constellation. We view the Pleiades as a kind of hole in the sky where spirits enter and exit into another realm. “When the constellation is the nearest to earth it is straight above us, and then we know it is a good time to share the teachings that are important spiritually and necessary to carry on a good life in a challenging environment.” Everyone is invited to attend this Truth and Reconciliation Community sponsored event to hear stories about the Anishinaabe history of places and people who have shaped this region.

25 YEARS AND COUNTING

By Deb Crossen

Twenty-five years ago, a small group of amateur actors got together at the Buckhorn Community Centre for the first Spring Dinner Theatre. A fundraiser for this not-for-profit organization, the event has grown into a popular night out for locals and visitors from all over southern Ontario. Audiences enjoy a three-course dinner and the

performance of a comedy. Today, the troupe of actors, known as The Hall’s Bridge Players, boasts more than 20 members, all of whom volunteer their time and talents to bring laughter to their guests. This year, we’re presenting “A Red Plaid Shirt”, by Michael G. Wilmot. Two friends fill the void left by retirement in different ways with a little help from their wives! A situation our audiences can relate to, for sure! Directed by Rob McWhirter, the show stars me (Deb Crossen), Bill Shregardus, Mike Chapman and Hayla Evans. Performance dates are April 24 to 26 and May 1 to 3. Tickets are $40 each and go on sale at 9:30am on Wednesday, March 11. Tickets sell out quickly, so if you can’t make it in person, you can call after 10:30am at 705-657-8833 to order yours. If you haven’t been to see us before, I personally invite you to check it out! You won’t be disappointed!

GOING GREEN TO HELP OTHERS

Submitted by Heather Kirby

As a community leader in food issues, the Kawartha Lakes Food Source (KLFS) is always looking for innovative ways to build and strengthen food security within the City of Kawartha Lakes. They recently announced the kick-off of a new program designed to eliminate the need for disposable dishes at community events, while also supporting food banks across the Kawartha Lakes. Jessica Topfer, FoodRescue.ca Coordinator at the Kawartha Lakes Food Source says, “Our new Green Dishes program will allow our community to reduce their environmental impact when hosting events that include food, while also helping food banks feed the need across the Kawartha Lakes.” Green Dishes is a waste reduction program designed to offer an alternative to single-use dishes and cutlery at private or public community events. Organizations or individuals can borrow dishes, cutlery, and utensils for a set donation fee by

completing an order form and agreeing to terms and conditions. Dishes are then picked up by the borrower, used, cleaned, and returned to KLFS. All proceeds go towards ending hunger in the Kawartha Lakes. Local market-based research conducted by the KLFS demonstrates that Green Dishes will be more affordable to borrowers than buying eco-conscious dishes and utensils, such as biodegradable cups, plates, and cutlery. Heather Kirby, General Manager of KLFS points out, “Borrowers get the peace of mind that their donation will be used to reduce hunger in their community, rather than it ending up in the pockets of big business.” The Kawartha Lakes Food Source will officially launch Green Dishes on April 1, 2020. Over the next month, they are looking for the community’s support in collecting enough dishes and utensils to get the program off the ground. If you have items that have been sitting in your cupboards collecting dust, drop them off at the KLFS warehouse at 41 George St W, Lindsay from Monday to Friday, anytime between 8:30am and 4:30pm. For more information about donating items, or the Green Dishes program in general, contact Jessica Topfer at 705-324-0707.

DARK SKIES HELP US ALL

From The Land Between

This year we invite you to learn all about night skies and why they are good for our health and the health of the planet, too! You can still see the Milky Way in The Land Between bioregion. In fact, it is the last place in southern Ontario that the mysterious star-blaze is in view. But night skies are vanishing quickly, and with them our health and the biodiversity and life in our communities is also at risk. Dark skies enable humans to reach REM sleep. This in turn, helps our immune systems and our metabolic processes. Artificial lighting attracts mosquitoes, allows algae to grow stronger and longer, interferes with regular cycles of plants, and confuses and confounds animals. More than 80 percent of the world’s population is now affected by artificial lighting at night. Did you know The Land Between is home to two Dark Sky Preserves and to the first one ever founded in Canada? The Torrance Barrens Dark Sky Preserve is near Gravenhurst. Here you can let your spirit soar atop a rock barren while watching Orion sparkle. Or visit the Frontenac Dark Sky Preserve, a tourist attraction in

QUILT BLOCK CHALLENGE WINNERS

The first competition of the 2020 International Plowing Match and Rural Expo (IPM) is in the books, courtesy of the Quilt Block Challenge. A panel of judges selected the top three entries and awarded cash prizes recently. The first-place quilt block was created by Irmgard Jacob of Tottenham, Ontario. Second place went to Erin Harkness of Clifford, Ontario. Third place went to Lindsay’s Sue Sharpe. Submitted Quilt Blocks were made using only fabric from prepared kits. The fabric was generously donated by Northcott Silk Inc. Of the 67 kits sold, 49 were returned and entered into the competition. The blocks will be used to create three quilts – one to be given as a gift to the Ontario Queen of the Furrow and two more to be used as prizes. IPM 2020 runs October 14 to 17 at the Lindsay Exhibition Grounds and neighbouring farms. For more information, visit www.plowingmatch.org/ipm2020.

MUSIC COUNCIL NOTES

By April Scott

The Emily Flack concert was a great success and the audience were treated to a wonderful afternoon. Emily was accompanied by a guitar and a fiddle and she played the piano. Along with performing vocally, she changed her shoes and came out and entertained us with step dancing. The Northwinds Band, affiliated with the Music Council and directed by Bev Tombler, performed its Annual concert. The band is made up of school students from the area and practice weekly during the winter months. The musical ability of these students is excellent and the concert was delightful. The final MusicAlive concert will be held in April. Christine Tassan et les Imposteures will be coming on April 19 to perform at 2:30pm. More information will be coming on the event. Are you looking for a musical Summer Camp for

your children? Now is the time to apply for this event. Applications can be found on the Bobcaygeon Music Council website at bobcaygeonmusic.com. I might mention that Bev Tombler also organizes the Music Camp and does an incredible job. You will also find a great deal of information about the Music Council on our website.

GIVE NORDIC POLE WALKING A TRY

By Michelle Holdforth

Nordic pole walking is increasing in popularity and individuals participating in this ever-growing recreational sport are reaping numerous benefits. This full-body workout may look easy, and it is, but the perceived exertion is remarkably different from regular walking. The fact is, that when compared to regular walking, we utilize 40 percent more muscles and we burn at least that in additional calories. Plus, we can increase the distance covered in the same amount of time as regular walking, or in other words, walk the same distance 30 to 40 percent faster with poles. These are just a few of the positive aspects to pole walking. Nordic pole walking originated as dry land training for cross-country skiers in Europe and can be enjoyed all year round on almost any terrain. These days, we see individuals of all ages and abilities pole walking on the beach, on trails and sidewalks and even indoor walking groups are using them. As we now realize, using the poles is not just for someone needing help with balance; however, the poles are an excellent tool to assist with this. Physiotherapists of Canada recommend them as an option to rebuild strength and stability from many ailments such as knee, hip or back surgery. Using the poles relieves stress and impact on the lower body, promoting healing with supported movement. Notable improvements in posture are continuously reported. Nordic pole walking is advocated to help increase blood flow and oxygen and the release of healthy hormones throughout the whole body, while reducing symptoms associated with Parkinson’s, diabetes, heart disease, osteoporosis and mental health. As with almost any exercise regimen, consistency is key to see desired results, including weight loss and increased strength and muscle. Michelle Holdforth is a personal trainer and certified Nordixx Pole Walking Instructor and distributor. She organizes pole walking groups in Buckhorn, where they explore beautiful local trails. She operates Yoga Souls, also teaching chair, wheelchair and hatha yoga.

Why take out a loan to invest in your RRSP? Let’s talk about that. All Tier 1 banks in Canada have RRSP loans and will encourage you to take one to maximize your contributions at this time of year. The first payment is usually deferred in order to provide clients the opportunity to use their tax refund to lower the outstanding balance. Payments for the loan must be completed within one year and therefore are not like a typical loan that you can pay over a 3- to 5-year term. Most banks will offer a discounted rate for your new RRSP loan, better than other loan options. As far as getting the funds, the banks will ensure the money is directed into a registered investment account, (mostly likely within their bank) and you will not have access to these funds to use for anything other than a true RRSP investment. There are many people who choose to use RRSP loans every year to increase their future savings and it is indeed a good idea. The interest you pay on the loan is a legitimate tax write off and it forces you to pay off the loan within the year, similar to setting up a monthly savings program. The only drawback to contributing this way is you generally apply the full lump sum to your investment portfolio every year and typically purchase stocks, bonds or mutual funds at whatever the price is when you make the contribution. This runs the risk of purchasing stock at inflated prices and negates the effects of borrowing to invest. There have been many studies over the years that show lump sum investments tend to not be as advantageous as making a monthly contribution and taking advantage of dollar cost averaging. Dollar cost averaging is when you invest on a regular basis, say every two weeks or every month, the same amount, into a stock portfolio. This continuous investment strategy is designed to reduce the volatility of the stock market prices and has been proven over time to lower your total average cost per share of your investment. Whatever you choose to do, it is great to save for your future. Don’t forget to be also saving into your TFSA since this is a true tax-free investment. The maximum contribution to your TFSA this year is $6,000 and the total contribution is $63,500.

CHORISTERS’ CORNER

By April Scott

The Choristers are still working hard on the music that Bob chose for us. With people away, either for sickness or vacations in warmer climes, it is not very easy for everyone to be on the same page. With that being said, you might find a few changes this year. There will be a concert but not necessarily in the Spring. They say change is good and this decision is going to give us a chance to explore and take our music to other venues. We have had a plea from the back row (the Basses) for more voices to join them. It wouldn’t hurt the Tenors in the front row either. All those gentlemen who love to sing in the shower - why not let the world hear you and come and join us some Tuesday night at the Retirement Suites on West Street around 7pm? There will be goodies awaiting for you at break time and a chance to socialize with us. As I write this epistle, the snow is starting to come down and will be replacing the snow that we lost the last few days. I think we will all be pleased to see Spring arrive soon.

UNITED WAY UPDATE

By Mallory Cramp-Waldinsperger

Our biggest Crayola sale yet! Two years ago, the team at Crayola Canada set a goal of raising $40,000 to reach a total of $1 million donated to the United Way for the City of Kawartha Lakes over 29 years. Each year, the company holds a sale that attracts shoppers from all over the province to purchase Crayola products and support the United Way. In 2017 and 2018, that goal was surpassed. In November, a group of United Way staff, Board members and volunteers met at the Crayola Canada office to be presented with a cheque from the 31st Annual Crayola Sale. This year’s total was just over $45,000, making it the largest ever Crayola Sale. 2020 Mona Hall Recipient A Place Called Home (APCH) has been announced as the recipient of a $5,000 grant from the Telecare Mona Hall Fund to pilot a new Youth Emergency Fund Project. This pilot will ensure that the immediate needs of youth in crisis, facing homelessness, or at risk of homelessness are met during the waiting period for other financial aid. Funds provided in the form of gift cards will help youth stay warm, fed, and connected to their community. “Over the years, we have been given the privilege of small legacy gifts which have allowed us to invest

in people in real time,” explains Penny Barton Dyke, Executive Director of UWCKL. “When donors give to UWCKL they do so with purpose and with the knowledge that funds go to high priority needs. These funds are monitored with the help of citizen review panel teams to ensure transparency and Accountability.” “The Garden” Documentary YourTV recently premiered the documentary “The Garden”, an original film that covers the first year of Edwin Binney’s Community Garden. This innovative food security initiative has provided over three tons of fresh vegetables to non-profit agencies and food banks across the City of Kawartha Lakes. The garden is located on roughly two acres of Crayola Canada’s previously unused land in Lindsay. In its first year of operation, Edwin Binney’s Community Garden provided more than 5,500 pounds of fresh vegetables to ten food banks and 11 social service agencies in our community: supplementing budgets for agencies while providing healthy and fresh options for their clients. At the same time, United Way of City of Kawartha Lakes staff hosted educational agriculture workshops for 350 children from 15 summer camps and school classes. “This movie celebrates community leaders and how partnerships are key to the creation of a highly productive garden,” says Penny Barton Dyke, Executive Director or UWCKL.

Health & Wellness MORE THAN FOOD

March is Nutrition Month, and dietitians across the country will show Canadians that healthy eating habits are about More than Food. For dietitians, it’s not just about considering what Canadians eat, but how they eat – how to enjoy food, the importance of eating meals together and how to cook more often by involving others in the planning and preparation of meals. Nutrition Month is the perfect time for Canadians to learn more about how food impacts their health and to connect with a dietitian. Dietitians know that easy access to highly processed foods, loss of food skills and other factors have impacted eating habits. The amount of money Canadians spend on highly processed foods has increased significantly in recent years and according to Statistics Canada, Canadian households spend about 30 percent of their food budget on restaurant meals. Almost six in 10 Canadians are managing at least one chronic disease through food and diet as reported in the Tracking Nutrition Trends Survey in 2018; many more are looking to improve their health more generally. Dietitians work alongside family doctors, pharmacists, nurses and in the community to support Canadian families to make healthy food decisions. “Dietitians are an essential resource for Canadians looking for support in making nutrition a key part of their overall health,” says Nathalie Savoie, CEO of Dietitians of Canada. “Our studies have shown that

A NEW GUIDE FOR NUTRITION

By Deb Crossen (with files from Health Canada)

When I was a child, Canada’s Food Guide was just that – a guide. Moms would make their meal choices based on the four food groups – vegetables and fruit, grain products, milk and meat. But in 2019, experts revamped the Food Guide to make it simpler to understand. According to the Government of Canada, your meal should be based around four principles: • Fill half your plate with fruits and vegetables • Eat protein foods that come from plants, not animals • Make water your drink of choice • Choose whole grain foods. The previous four food groups no longer exist. Instead, they are separated into three groupings: vegetables and fruits, whole grains (such as whole grain pasta, brown rice and quinoa) and protein foods (lentils, lean red meat, fish, poultry, unsweetened milk and fortified soy beverages, nuts, seeds, tofu, lower fat dairy and cheeses lower in fat and sodium). Also gone are recommendations for specific portions or daily servings. Experts say that nobody was weighing and measuring their food and there was a gray area when it came to an actual “serving size.” So now, the guide focuses on proportions, with an emphasis on a high proportion of plant-based foods. It also recommends replacing foods that contain mostly saturated fat (cream, high fat cheese, butter and the like) with foods that contain mostly unsaturated fats, like nuts, seeds and avocados. Health Canada says that a diet that’s higher in vegetables and fruits is linked to a lower risk of cardiovascular disease, eating more nuts or soy protein can help improve blood fat levels,

INSOMNIA AND THE GUT CONNECTION

By Nancy Este

If you suffer from insomnia, then you understand the seriousness of not getting a good night’s sleep. Your whole world appears to crumble when you can’t get a good 6 to 8 hours of quality, deep REM sleep. Your work life and your family life all suffer. This is a common issue that can be treated holistically. Waking up after a few hours of sleep and not being able to get back to sleep is often a rebound effect from what you ate and drank hours before. Another key factor is the neurotransmitter serotonin. When low, it can lead to poor quality disrupted sleep. Unfortunately, when we are faced with an overload of stress or have a compromised digestive system, the level of serotonin suffers If you have gas, bloating, IBS, constipation, hormonal imbalances or other gut issues, popping a bunch of pills is not ideal and may not resolve insomnia until you fix your gut. Restoring gut health improves mental clarity, daytime depression, PMS, fibromyalgia and anxiety as well as carbohydrate cravings, and binge-eating. Working with a trained holistic practitioner who understands the underlying causes of insomnia and how to do the proper testing to discover what needs to be fixed is key. It really can be as simple as that. Nancy Este ROHP, RNCP practises functional and holistic nutrition world-wide offering consultations by phone, virtually and her Dunsford office. To book a free discovery call, visit www.nancyeste.com or call 705-340-8991. Services may be covered under extended health insurance.

FOOD FOR LEARNING

Research has been done into the correlation between a child’s learning abilities and healthy eating. Food For Kids believes that no matter what socioeconomic background, every child has the right to access healthy and nutritious food at school so they can learn to their full potential. Student Nutrition Programs are universal, free of charge, and available for all students, operating in all 31 schools within the City of Kawartha Lakes region. They serve more than 10,000 students every day. Food For Kids CKL puts your donations to work in the communities where you live. One hundred percent of your donations go directly to helping schools purchase healthy and nutritious food as well as kitchen supplies. These programs also depend on many volunteers who give their time and efforts in food preparation, serving and cleanup. If you’d like to volunteer, please get in touch with your local school board.

APPS CAN HELP YOU AND YOUR HEARING-IMPAIRED CHILD

Supporting a child with hearing loss can be as frustrating and exhausting as it is rewarding, but some relief and assistance can be found on your phone or tablet. There are many apps that can help teach you and your hearingimpaired child sign language with videos, stories, and games, and it doesn’t stop there. Apps that teach reading, math, and science to deaf and hearing-impaired children are also available, often for free or for a very low price. There are also many apps to help them with speech and language development, provide captioning for conversation, measure noise levels to help avoid further hearing loss, and even help alert them to important sounds like alarms and doorbells. It’s hard when someone you care about is losing their hearing. We can find ourselves struggling to communicate. Fortunately, with today’s technology, apps for hard-ofhearing people can help us communicate with loved ones who have hearing loss. At LINDSAY EAR CLINIC, we keep up to date with the latest advancements in hearing technology. Please call us today and have your hearing tested by a Doctor of Audiology. P.S. As part of their expansion into language processing, Google has recently come out with two new apps, Sound Amplifier and Live Transcribe, to assist the deaf community in daily life.

Horoscopes March 5 to 18

By Melodie McCullough

Aquarius (Jan. 21 to Feb. 19) Sleep well, dear Aquarius. Without a peaceful sleep, our bodies and minds are not at rest . . . we must take good care of ourselves! Pisces (Feb. 20 to March 20) The full moon on March 9 is considered by some to be the last full moon of Winter – a time of bridging and balance between the coldness and darkness and the stirrings of new life that come with Spring. Pisces, think of this as a time for equilibrium in your life and as a time to think things through calmly.

Gemini (May 22 to June 22) “You are your best thing.” These are the words of Toni Morrison, Nobel Prize for Literature recipient. Believe these words, Gemini, because they are true and powerful. It doesn’t get much better than YOU! Cancer (June 23 to July 23) Learn to use time wisely, Cancer. You will so often hear someone say “I don’t have time for this or that”. But you can make time for the important things. It all comes down to priorities – so choose yours! Leo (July 24 to Aug. 23) New employment opportunities may arise soon, Leo. Choices lie ahead, but whatever path you take will prove worthwhile.

Aries (March 21 to April 20) The word “authenticity” has become something of a buzz word of late. What does it mean? We think, Aries, it is telling you to live your life the way you – and only you – want to live it. Don’t be ‘someone else’ in order to please or impress other people!

Virgo (Aug. 24 to Sept. 23) When the white people came to America, they saw the Indigenous people bowing before the trees and thought they were worshiping them, and called the Indigenous people ‘pagans’. In reality, they were giving thanks, like they did to the water and other creatures for providing them with life. Gratitude is very special, Virgo, and one that we should all practice daily!

Taurus (April 21 to May 21) Is it time to reconnect with someone or something from your past, Taurus? Only you will know the answer, but it is something that may occupy your thoughts during this zodiac phase . . . so prepare your response!

Libra (Sept. 24 to Oct. 23) Haste makes waste, Libra. It’s an old saying, but it’s still relevant. Take time to think things through and don’t act spontaneously on serious issues. If it’s important, it will wait until the time is right to move forward.

Are you eligible for pension $plitting? Split your income and save even more on your taxes. Did you know that transferring your pension income to a spouse or common-law partner can increase your tax savings?

Scorpio (Oct. 24 to Nov. 22) As you age, Scorpio, what people think of you will become less and less important. You become more self-assured in the knowledge that you are fine as you are. So, why wait? Why not start to think this way NOW. Sagittarius (Nov. 23 to Dec. 21) You may be thinking of ‘moving on’, Sagittarius, whether at the workplace or elsewhere. However, we caution you to make sure you are moving TOWARDS something, rather than just running FROM something. Capricorn (Dec. 22 to Jan. 20) Worry will drain your energy, physically and mentally, dear Capricorn. Try hard to live in the present, and leave your worries about the past and the future where they belong – in the past and in the future!

Roots ‘n’ Ramblings

Submitted by Patty Carlson

Gardening by the Moon

This year’s “First day of Spring” or Spring Equinox is Friday, March 20. The vernal or Spring Equinox is the point at which the sun’s path crosses the celestial equator moving from south to north. Traditionally the spring equinox is symbolic of rebirth, renewal, and growth. Some farmers and gardeners still use astrological data in determining planting and harvesting times. It all revolves around the moon’s phases and is purported to make plants healthier and more productive. Just as the moon’s pull affects the ocean’s tides, it can also affect moisture levels in soil. Calculations involve the waxing of the moon (from New Moon to Full Moon) and the waning of the moon (from Full Moon to New Moon). In combination with frost dates in your area, it can help to determine the best time to plant. The waxing moon is a good time to plant annuals and veggies that grow above ground. The waning moon is good for perennials and veggies that grow below ground. More information can be found in the Old Farmers’ Almanac or online by googling “Gardening by the Moon”. If you want to try something different in your gardening toolbox this spring, there’s still plenty of time to schedule planting dates before the snow melts and the danger of frost is past. Happy planning and planting - not much longer now! Visitors are welcome to the regular monthly meeting

of the Bobcaygeon Horticultural Society on March 19 at Knox Presbyterian Church (across from Home Hardware) in Bobcaygeon. Social time at 6:30pm, followed by a brief business meeting and speaker at 7pm. Cindy Cartwell of the Ontario Hummingbird Project will cure us of the late winter blues with her enthusiastic introduction to those dazzling little hummers. Visit www.bobcaygeonhorticulture.com.

CRAZY QUILT GUILD HOSTS ARTIST

Submitted by Alleyne Hardaker

Borderline Crazy Quilt Guild is one of two quilting guilds in Lindsay. Our mission is to provide learning opportunities through workshops and lectures to our members. On April 8, we’ll be hosting Libs Elliott as our guest speaker. Libs is a hometown Lindsay girl who attended elementary and high school here. Now a well-known textile artist and designer, Libs has much to offer our members and other members of the community. Libs explores the intersection of technology and traditional craft by using generative design to build handmade quilts. A deep appreciation for craftsmanship, design history and future-focused applications are all reflected in her work. The event takes place at Mackey Celebrations, 35 Lindsay Street North in Lindsay from 7 to 9pm. Tickets are $10 each and the doors open at 6pm.

Visitors were lined up out the door of the Victoria Park Armoury to attend the 7th Annual Kawartha Lakes Soupfest on February 22. The record-breaking crowd was treated to a great variety of soups from 20 restaurants, caterers and a non-profit group from Lindsay, Fenelon Falls, Bobcaygeon and Kirkfield. Guests and judges had a very difficult time choosing the winners of this friendly competition. In the end, the celebrity judges and the crowd came to the same consensus, awarding the honours of Best Tasting Soup and Judges’ Choice to soon-to-be-opened Lindsay restaurant, Milk & Honey Eatery for their Caramelized Onion Maple Butternut Squash Soup. The award for Most Unique Soup was won by Neabours Family Restaurant for their Chocolate Marshmallow Cream Cheese Soup. This event is a major fundraiser for the local chapter of Youth Unlimited, a worldwide Christian organization that works with at-risk local youth with programs such as breakfast at the Alternative Education Centre, their On-Target Archery Program, Camping Trips and One on One Mentoring. Organizers are very grateful to the many local businesses that sponsor this annual event and the large number of volunteers that helped to make 2020 the biggest and best ever!
