OVER THE BACK FENCE

Technology makes our lives so much easier ... until it stops working. We here at The Kawartha Promoter were on the verge of major meltdown last week as our email provider migrated to a new server and we were left without email for three days. Unfortunately for us, it was the three days before we went to press with this issue. Unless you’re a whiz with tech (I am knowledgeable and can navigate through most problems), this type of thing really gets to me. As dependent as we are on technology – our computers, email, social media, mobile phones – we also have to realize that when (not if) it stops working, there’s a whole generation of people who won’t have a clue how to communicate with each other. I was speaking with a friend about this the other day and she reminded me that there are plenty of examples of yester-tech about which today’s young people have no clue. Let’s try a little test

... who remembers: • Vinyl records • Rotary telephones • Party lines • Pay phones • 8-track tapes • CB radios • Polaroid cameras • Manual typewriters • Mimeograph machines I know my age is showing through this list, but it’s kind of fun to step back into the time machine, Mr. Peabody. A fun game to play around the campfire this long weekend, yes?

SAVE THE VEGETATION

I was interested in learning through your publication that Jamie Schmale is involved in a “Save the Walleye” initiative. Does this mean that he will help oppose such organizations as “Save Pigeon Lake” who seek to eradicate the natural vegetation upon which the walleye thrive? D. Milligan, Trent Lakes

WHO ARE “THE PEOPLE”?

Premier Ford has said each time he makes an announcement that it is for the people of Ontario. My question is “who are these people”? • Readers, particularly seniors, who are watching their library budgets cut 50 percent so that they are unable to access the same wide range of materials, especially large print • Students who will gain more “self reliance” as they are crowded in classrooms with more students with special needs • Autistic families who are getting a small amount to handle a large problem • The taxpayer who is paying $30 million to fight the carbon tax as Ford has offered no solution for our environmental issues • The taxpayer who has paid over $200 million to oust the former hydro chief and cancel the Avista project • The taxpayer in each municipality who does not reap

the benefits of the province’s gas tax as promised for local transportation issues unlike the federal plan which goes to the individual taxpayer • Those who use the Public Health Service which has been cut by 50 percent. Ford has increased the deficit while in office but has decided to cut many services a large segment of our society depends on by claiming he needs to reduce the deficit. Where is Laurie Scott? V. AGE ISN’T A BARRIER

My friend George and I are both over 80 years of age and blessed with good health that enables us to continue enjoying aviation as licensed pilots. Not too long ago, George saw an aircraft for sale in an aviation publication and decided to buy it. To add to his confidence level, he invited me to travel with him to pick the aircraft up and fly it back to Lindsay. We go back a long way, where I was one of his instructors years ago. We boarded a WestJet Q400 from Toronto to Moncton, New Brunswick. George is originally from that area and we were treated like royalty. The next day, we were driven to Miramichi where George’s prize was to be found. The aircraft is a Piper PA38 “Tomahawk”, two place, low wing design. We both were made familiar with it by taking turns doing circuits with the seller. When we felt comfortable with the characteristics of the aircraft, we filed a consecutive stop flight plan to Riviere DeLoup, Trois Rivieres, Gatineau and home to Lindsay fueling at each leg of the trip. The newer navigation program for i-pads called Foreflight is a breeze compared to using paper charts and computing course corrections on an E6B handheld flight computer affectionately called a “whizwheel”. Of course, we still maintained paper charts in case the i-pad failed. By the time we arrived at Gatineau (formerly Hull, by the way), it was around 19:30 hrs (7:30 pm) and bad weather was upon us. The PA38 is not IFR equipped.

IFR stands for Instrument Flight Rules. We booked in a hotel overnight and had to return to the Kawarthas by bus. The next week promised a spate of good weather, so we returned (by bus) to Gatineau and prepared the aircraft for its epic last leg of the journey to its new home in Lindsay. That morning revealed a rather low ceiling but we were able to file a flight plan out of Gatineau at 2500 feet. It was quite turbulent but about 20 miles along the route the sky opened up to blue and brilliant sunlight. We climbed to 4500 feet and the rest of the flight home was as smooth as running your finger over a glass table-top. I sent a text to my wife advising her of our estimated time of arrival as well as informing members of our flying club who were interested in greeting us. When we touched down on runway 13, we could see a 101 piece brass band heralding our arrival. A mirage? Yes, it was. It was the 12 or 13 interested parties there to greet us. If you are healthy enough to be alert and mobile in your more senior years, enjoy every minute of opportunities for fun and adventure. I know we older pilots do. Jim Baldwin, Omemee

A Day Of Many Presentations

At a Committee of the Whole Meeting on May 7, the City of Kawartha Lakes Council sat through a series of deputations and presentations on a variety of topics.

Dromoland Orchard and Stable

Michael Bryant, one of the owners of Dromoland Orchard and Stable, made a deputation to Council regarding what he felt was “the disconnect between city policy aimed at creating business and employment and the City by-law department” who are forced to administer a patchwork of legislation left from before amalgamation. Bryant and his partner have spent considerable capital and sweat equity into their five-acre property, restoring both the home and the abandoned apple orchard that is a primary feature of the property. The last two years, as part of a provincial agricultural diversification program, Bryant has begun to host weddings at his rural property, which has brought him into conflict with his immediate neighbour and the City by-law enforcement department. Bryant claims “he is doing nothing illegal” as the provincial government is encouraging farmers to diversify their sources of income. The noise of the weddings, running into the wee hours of the morning, has caused neighbours to call the City by-law department to have these events shut down. Bryant expressed his frustrations that the City is limiting what he believes to be a perfectly legal use for his farm. Mayor Letham shared with Bryant that “provincial policy doesn’t mean that the City doesn’t have a say

in zoning.” Director of Building and Planning Chris Marshall added that “while rules exist to allow farms to make an extra income, there are lots of specific requirements built into that law.” Marshall added that “all farms and events they host need to be governed by their exact location with issues like noise, septic and parking addressed on a case-by-case basis.” Mayor Letham concluded that “the City is willing to work to support agri-tourism but there is a process in place that needs to be followed.”

Opposition to Events at Dromoland Orchard and Stable

Jeremy Lamperd lives next door to Mr. Bryant and shared with Council the problems he and his family have been experiencing since Dromoland started hosting weddings in 2017. Mr. Lamperd says he is “a supporter of agricultural tourism but it needs to be appropriate to the neighbourhood.” Lamperd shared anecdotal and video evidence of how close to the common property line the wedding tent is erected, and the problems that is causing. Lamperd apparently met with Bryant in 2017, and after the meeting Bryant promised to move the tent to a different location on the property for the 2018 wedding season. Unfortunately, 2018 arrived and the tent was in the same place it was for the 2017 season. Mr. Lamperd says between the live bands and professional sound systems, the noise can be heard anywhere in his home. Lamperd believes there is nothing in the Ministry protocol about hosting weddings for over 300 guests and that people like Bryant are “abusing by-laws and the intent of the agri-tourism legislation.” Lamperd concluded his presentation by saying “that what is going on at Dromoland is not agritourism and that there is nothing agricultural about hosting weddings on your farm property.” The City accepted the two deputations with recommendations to be presented at a future Council meeting.

Presentation: Otonabee Region Conservation Authority

The Otonabee Region Conservation Authority shared an update with the CKL Council. The Conservation Authority believes that the spring of 2019, with its high water and considerable flooding, is behaving in a way very similar to the spring of 2018. The Authority suggested that there would be a prolonged flood season, and that the Trent Severn may open a few weeks later than expected because there is still too much water to be run through the locks before the system can be safely opened. In 2018, the largest project that the Authority took on was the replacement of the spillway at the Millbrook Dam at a cost of almost $4 million. Also in 2018, the Conservation Authority began mapping in detail eight more flood plains and watersheds to help predict seasonal shifts in water levels, and the chances for serious flooding. The Authority was pleased to report there has been an improvement in forestry coverage for the region and slight improvement in wetland health. 2019 is the Authority’s 60th anniversary and they are planning a week of celebrations July 7 to 13 to let the community know what they do to benefit the communities they serve. Councillor Richardson, who represents the CKL on the Conservation Authority, praised the work the group is doing and claimed she learned much since joining them.

City Projects Require More Time

If a City funded project is not completed in 18 months from its inception, the City must re-apply to Council to have the project reauthorized. For more than 80 City-funded projects worth almost $50 million, that is exactly what happened at this Meeting of the Whole. City staff shared that of the $49.5 million originally allocated to these programs almost $38.5 million had been spent. Many of the projects are in their final phase and staff hope that many will be completed soon. Council recommended reauthorizing these projects, and look forward to their timely completion.

Stop Signs

The Consolidated Stop Control Review on various roads recommended the following: • An all-way stop with flashing beacons be installed at the intersection of Sturgeon Road and Peace Road • An all-way stop be installed at the intersection of Francis Street East and Concession Road; at the intersection of Stinson’s Bay Road and Graham Drive; at the intersection of Quaker Road and Taylor’s Road; and at the intersection of Summer Drive and Ball Point Road. • A stop control be installed on the south approach of Springdale Drive at Champlain Boulevard; on Strawberry Street at Naylor Road; and on Lyles Line at Devitt’s Road. The City accepted the recommendations and will vote on this issue at the next Council meeting later this month.

LETS TALK ABOUT YOUR INSURANCE sponsored by Stewart Morrison Insurance

CANNABIS AND YOUR HOME INSURANCE POLICY - 4 COMMON MISCONCEPTIONS. Growing Cannabis at home On October 17th 2018, Federal law changed to allow for the legal growing of cannabis plants on your property for personal consumption. However, Bill C-45 states that it is only legal to grow up to four plants per household, and not four plants per person. Additionally, both the law and your insurance policy dictate that the seeds, clones or plants must be purchased from a legal source - which in the province of Ontario is still quite hard to find. Cultivating Cannabis at home Previous to October 2018, home insurance policies outlined that any structure(s), or any personal property contained in any building where the cultivation, harvesting, processing or manufacturing of cannabis or derivative products are strictly uninsurable. What has changed with legalization, is that insurance companies have added the word illegal in front of the word cannabis. Meaning that much like growing of cannabis at home, if you did not purchase the marijuana for cultivation from a legal source, and can provide receipts, your home insurance policy will not respond in the event of a loss. Rental Properties As the owner of a rental property, these laws of growing and cultivating illegal cannabis will still apply to you, even if it is your tenants who decided to grow, or cultivate illegally sourced marijuana. Many condo boards acted quickly to create rules surrounding this new legislation, however it is important for your tenant to know the law, and any subsequent private rules when renting out your property. Possession Canada now allows you to have 30 grams of legal cannabis at one time for personal use - likely not enough to warrant a call to your insurance broker, but should you decide to grow your own legal marijuana plants, those have higher value. Some insurers allow homeowners to list these plants under their contents insurance. In summary, your home insurance policy contains an exclusion clause for any good or item that is viewed as illegal. This is why, if you choose to grow or cultivate cannabis, or keep a certain quantity of it in your home, it is important to comply with the law. Doing otherwise might jeopardize your compensation in the event of a loss.

TRENT LAKES

Talks Short-Term Rentals

By Glenna Burns

At the May 7 meting of Trent Lakes Council, City of Kawartha Lakes Senior Licensing officer Alexandra Scarr presented a summary of her municipality’s history of addressing complaints around Short-term Rental properties. Usually, a short-term rental is described as renting a house, apartment, room or cottage for 30 days or less. In the Kawartha Lakes region, short-term rentals have historically been associated with resorts and cottages. The issue has come to the attention of municipal leaders in both the City of Kawartha Lakes and Trent Lakes due to a few renters acting in offensive, unruly or illegal ways. According to CKL’s Scarr, the regulation through by-laws by small municipalities for short-term rentals would be expensive and unnecessary. In order to get to the root of the issue, CKL held pubic forums, distributed public surveys, had one-on-

one conversations and created complaint tracking tools. All of these actions led to CKL’s conclusions. In fact, the majority of survey respondents opposed any attempt by the municipality to regulate short-term rentals. Scarr concluded that if a by-law regulating shortterm rentals was enacted, “there would be huge municipal costs to administer the by-law.” For now, CKL has increased fees (fines) charged by City officials to visit offending properties, taken some to court, amended other by-laws like animal and noise and created a public education component. The public education package consists of two posters. One can be placed in rental properties informing renters of the rules and regulations in CKL. The other poster is available to inform those who wish to lodge a complaint. Tracking complaints is a key factor, but Scarr stated that compared to other municipal issues, the numbers are low. In 2018, Trent Lakes Building and Planning Department received four complaints, three of which filed problems with noise and littering. The other complaint had issues with trespassing, noise, littering, dogs, unattended fires and parking. According to TL Director of Corporate Issues/Clerk Kari Stevenson, the centre for the main complaints seems to be Crystal Lake and one cottage in particular. Scarr reminded TL Council that many issues involving short-term rentals like alcohol and unsafe boating fall under the policing umbrella. The issue will continue to be discussed at future Cottage Association Meetings and public forums in Trent Lakes.

Sites to See For the historian in the group, the Balsam Lake Dry Stone Wall is a fantastic example of a Scottish dry stone wall still intact today and built by George Laidlaw in the 1870’s. The historic Lime Kilns still overlooking Coboconk help us remember what a crucial part of the village’s history limestone played. Canada’s Smallest Jail in Coboconk also has some interesting stories to tell. Last, but not least, a must-see is the Kirkfield Lift Lock. Built in the early 1900’s, it physically raises and lowers to move boats through a change in elevation on the Trent-Severn Waterway and has a number of features of interest to bridge enthusiasts. It is an amazing feat of engineering. We look forward to welcoming you to our beautiful area!

WALKING FOR A CAUSE

The Pet Valu Walk for Dog Guides is a national fundraiser held in approximately 300 communities across Canada. The Walk raises funds for Lions Foundation of Canada Dog Guides, whose mission is to assist Canadians with a medical or physical disability by providing them a Dog Guide. Dog Guides are provided at no cost to eligible Canadians, despite the $25,000 expense it takes to raise, train, and place each one. Dog Guides Canada has already provided specially trained Dog Guides to more than 3,000 men, women and children, all without any government funding. With your help more people will experience the mobility, safety and independence a devoted Dog Guide brings. The Walk in Bobcaygeon is on Saturday, May 25. Sign in is at 9am at the Lion’s Hall (55 Main Street) and the walk starts at 10am. You can register online as a walker or sign up as a team captain and challenge your friends. You can also use the Walk donation form to collect donations, or make a donation online to the Walk of your choice. When you ask for support, please remember that 100 percent of all donations go to providing Dog Guides, and tax receipts are issued automatically for all donations of more than $20. You can find out more information at www. walkfordogguides.com.

It explores how the garden takes on various roles and functions within the lives of the family for whom it provides sustenance and enjoyment, including that of a mirror of the family itself.

LOCAL BUSINESS IN THE TOP 5

Kicking Cowgirl Designs (KCD) of Bobcaygeon has been chosen one of the top five in The Girl Boss Awards. These are designed to showcase girl bosses in the Western Rodeo industry, from makers and brands to cowgirls and photographers. Awards are given in 10 different categories and, at our press time, voting was taking place online. In the category of Best Western Boutique, the criteria was “always on top of the latest trends and boutique provides fun and authentic western pieces for all.” Kicking Cowgirl Designs was founded five years ago by Kimberly Dawn (as she is known on the Ontario Rodeo circuit) as a way to support and raise funds for her feeding and sports programs she runs every February in Africa. KCD has developed into one of Canada’s best known Western Wear stores for both guys and girls with 20 percent of its profits given back to various needs mostly involving kids here and in Africa. Each weekend you can see one of her two trailers and tents at the Rawhide Rodeo, Ram Rodeo or plowing match in Ontario and Quebec from April to October. In the fall and winter, you can find KCD at various rodeos in California, Hawaii or Oklahoma. More and more shoppers are coming to Bobcaygeon to check out this very cool store from all over Ontario, Quebec and even Michigan.

BEWARE OF FLOOD SCAMS

With the recent floods that have been occurring in Ontario and the State of Emergency declarations in a number of communities, it has come to the attention of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) that there are some individuals who may be attempting to fraudulently benefit from this situation. Given these circumstances, Haliburton Highlands OPP is strongly urging anyone who may wish to support any fundraising initiatives that may be underway or planned for the future, to make sure that they research carefully before they donate. Municipalities within the County of Haliburton encourage individuals, businesses and organizations interested in making financial or material donations

READY, SET, FISH!

This year, the Canada US Walleye Tournament will take place on May 18 and 19 out of Beach Park in Bobcaygeon. Organizers say the date change should allow for cooler water temps, and the venue change will allow for more oxygenated, clear moving water which together will help with better fish care. The orientation meeting will be held at the Bobcaygeon Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 239, 96 King St. East in Bobcaygeon and will commence at 5pm. The Legion will be putting on a BBQ starting at 5pm. The Bobcaygeon & Area Chamber of Commerce has partnered with the Competitive Sport Fishing League (CSFL) in an effort to preserve, manage and develop the growth of the future of the oldest Walleye Tournament in the Province of Ontario, the Canada US Walleye Tournament celebrating its 39th year. Blast off is set for 6am or safe light on May 18 and 19, with weigh-in starting at 2pm.

GRILL SAFELY THIS BARBECUE SEASON

With the barbecue season under way across Ontario, Kawartha Lakes Fire Rescue is reminding residents of a few safety precautions before grilling that first meal this spring and summer. “Barbecuing is one of the great pleasures of summer and the fire service wants to make sure everyone enjoys the season safely,” says Fire Prevention Officer Fritz Mattern. “Before you fire it up for the first time this year, check and clean your propane barbecue following the manufacturer’s instructions.” To ensure your barbecue is ready for grilling season, the Technical Standards and Safety Authority recommends making this three-step safety check part of your spring-cleaning routine: • Clean: Use a pipe cleaner or wire to make sure the burner ports are free of rust, dust, dirt, spider webs or other debris.

BOBCAYGEON’S BIGGEST YARD & BAKE SALE

• Check: Examine the hose leading from the fuel supply to the burners. Replace if cracked or damaged. • Test: Find leaks by applying a 50/50 solution of water and dish soap to all fuel and hose connections. If bubbles appear, tighten the connections and/or replace the damaged parts and always re-test. Remember that barbecues are for outdoor use only. If used in an enclosed space, carbon monoxide – an odourless, colourless, poisonous gas – will gather and reach dangerous exposure levels, which can lead to serious health effects or even death.

MAKE A PAWSITIVE DIFFERENCE

The Humane Society of Kawartha Lakes (HSKL) has made the month of May their Monthly Donor month. In order for the shelter to remain sustainable, major fundraising efforts need to be pursued. “We can no longer afford to host fundraisers and events every now and then,” says Executive Director Henny Venus. “That worked in the past. As the need for our services increases, we now need a way to make sure funds are steadily coming in.” By recruiting Monthly Donors, the shelter can better predict their day to day income. Monthly Donors can choose how much they want to gift per month. Changing that amount can be done at any time by contacting the shelter. Monthly donations not only help the shelter keep the lights on

The Humane Society hopes to boost the amount of donors in their Club, by the end of May. There are also perks for Monthly Donors, such as reduced adoption fees and Annual General Meeting voting rights. The shelter is hosting two information sessions on Wednesday, May 22 at noon and 5pm, for those interested in learning more and to tour the shelter. Monthly Donors can choose to direct their gift to any one of the dedicated funds, such as the Marj Owen Spay/Neuter Fund or dedicate their gift to where it is needed the most. Aquarius (Jan. 21 to Feb. 19) Are you suffering from ‘affluenza’, Aquarius? Is it time to question your buying practices? Do you really need all those ‘things’, and do they really bring you happiness? Something to think about! Pisces (Feb. 20 to March 20) What if . . .? Try to think a little more creatively at work these days, Pisces, and ask yourself if there is more than one answer to a problem. Don’t be afraid to ask for suggestions. Aries (March 21 to April 20) Sleep on it. This may sound like a cliché, but it’s also very wise advice. After a sound night’s sleep, worries often appear less worrisome! Taurus (April 21 to May 21) As the bright full moon shines down on you May 18, Taurus, be grateful for the flowers that are blossoming during the day and the light that guides you in the night. It is a time for being thankful! Gemini (May 22 to June 22) The art of communication may be tested during this phase in connection with your love life, Gemini. When difficulties arise, do not react with anger. Show compassion and the love that brought you together. Cancer (June 23 to July 23) “The years teach much which the days never

Leo (July 24 to Aug. 23) With Spring finally here – and summer not far behind – take the time to regenerate and revitalize your life, dear Leo. Make new plans, get organized, embrace your space! Virgo (Aug. 24 to Sept. 23) So many things in life do not turn out the way we had expected. As we age, we realize, Virgo, that change will always come, and what we need to do is to get used to the changes. Libra (Sept. 24 to Oct. 23) Be a mentor, Libra. Be the kind of person you needed when you were learning how to do your new job. You will be greatly appreciated. Scorpio (Oct. 24 to Nov. 22) Can you lighten your load, Scorpio? Are you burdened by un-necessary worries, thoughts, and to-do lists? Shake things up! Get to know what is absolutely essential, and then scale back. Sagittarius (Nov. 23 to Dec. 21) We are worried about your health, Sagittarius, both physical and mental. It may seem like you can keep going forever on half a tank, but, sooner or later, the tank will dry up. Act now to refill! Capricorn (Dec. 22 to Jan. 20) You need to prioritize your needs and wants, dear Cap. Things are getting scrambled up and out of hand. Rest, relax, and then – take charge!

QUEEN WHO?

There’s an entire generation of people who have no idea who Queen Victoria was – but everyone is willing to take an extra day off work and school to celebrate her birthday. So here’s a little backstory on the secondlongest reigning monarch in British history. In 1845, the parliament of the Province of Canada (as it was known then) passed legislation to officially recognize May 24 as a national holiday to commemorate Queen Victoria’s birthday. Here’s a little known local connection to the history of Her Majesty as found on Wikipedia: On May 24 in 1866, which was her 47th birthday, Omemee mounted a day-long traditional celebration to mark her birthday, including a gun salute at midnight, pre-dawn serenades, picnics, a torch light procession and athletic competitions. During her 63 years on the throne, Queen Victoria survived at least six assassination attempts and was one of the first on record to be targeted by a stalker – a teenager who managed to break into Buckingham Palace several times, hiding under the Queen’s sofa, sitting on her throne and reportedly even stealing her underwear! Following the Queen’s death in 1901, May 24 was officially declared Victoria Day. Canada is the only country that commemorates Queen Victoria with an official holiday. Across the country today, Victoria Day is the unofficial end of the winter season, the time women can wear white again and for many, the beginning of the cottage season.

Good Stories from Curve Lake First Nation

THE DISAPPEARING ANIMALS

As told by Doug Williams to Julie Kapyrka

As a child, I grew up spending a lot of time in the tri-lakes: Pigeon, Buckhorn, and Chemong. Those lakes were very significant in terms of the wetlands that were established along the shorelines and consequently they held a lot of animal life such as birds and frogs and fish. One of the birds that we used to listen out for because it was very nostalgic for us was the American Bittern. In the language we call it MOOSHKA’OSI translated literally means: bird of the marsh. This bird had an unusual call, like a guttural ‘glug glug’ sound. Deep into quiet nights and evenings you would hear this American Bittern. Today the American Bittern is not around. I’ve not seen one for about 3 years. They are very rare now and I miss them very much. The food source for the American Bittern is the frog, namely the Leopard Frog and they were well fed in the old days because there were a lot of frogs. The frog itself is disappearing. The one that is very important to us is the Bullfrog because we can hunt it for food. The Bullfrog, in the language we call CHI-DEHNDEHN. And this frog would have big legs with a quarter pound of meat – you would fry it up like chicken, you

James a. Goodliff

put a nice coating on it and you could not beat it. Today, I don’t hear any of their sound. In the springtime they would roar at each other in mating season. I miss that sound. There are other frogs too that disappeared – the Leopard Frog and the Chorus Frog. What are we going to have left as the sounds of spring when we don’t have these animals? It will be a sad day when they totally disappear. Over the years there have been other changes around here when it comes to animals. The Eastern Cougar has disappeared. The Cougar was very much a swamp animal living in the deep woods and I would hear it crying and snarling in the bush when I was young. However, the last I ever saw of any evidence of an Eastern Cougar was footprints across Buckhorn Lake at the north end towards Harvey Township. When I was about 10 years old I saw these tracks with my great uncle Madden who identified them as being of the big cat: CHI-KAAZHAG. And they have not been seen since. The Ontario Grey Wolf has also declined. I think what has happened is that the Western Coyote has moved into the area and is very invasive. Even though it’s smaller, it is much more aggressive and the Grey Wolf will back off. There are only a few remnants of them now and the bigger packs survive in the Algonquin Park area. We used to have all kinds of interesting fish

including the Lake Trout, the Sturgeon, and the big Sucker. But we don’t find them anymore up and down the Trent system. Sturgeon Lake is named after this animal and once upon a time, thrived up there. But settlement soon did it in and it’s since disappeared. The Nishnaabe name for sturgeon is NAMEBIN. The other story is one of the Brook Trout that used to be found in the odd stream around the area. One of the interesting aspects about this fish is there is still a number to be found in the Harper Creek which is at the southwest corner of Peterborough. These Brook Trout have not been genetically touched by any other species for thousands of years. It’s a unique population and they need to be protected. It’s threatened now by developments all around it. Trout need cold water to survive. Salmon also need cold water. The Atlantic Salmon is no longer found in the area. The Atlantic Salmon was very abundant here in the early days and disappeared with the building of dams and with settlement occurring and the cutting down of trees which made it possible for the waters of rivers in the Trent system to warm up. Salmon have not come up the Trent Canal since settlement when they began to disappear; and some of the old salmon subspecies are also gone. So this gives you an idea of the state of our animals and the birds and the fish. This list is nowhere near complete, it only gives you a glimpse of some of the animals that have disappeared in my lifetime. I miss these animals. I worry about these animals. The Old Ones said that if we look after the animals, the animals will look after us…but that is another story.

PUTTING POWER BACK IN THE HANDS OF THE PEOPLE If you believe that you should have the right to hold a government accountable for their actions, read this and sign e-petition 2166 on the House of Commons petition site. RECALL is a process through which a registered voter can petition to remove a Member of the Legislative Assembly from office. A voter can only petition to RECALL the member for the electoral district in which they are registered to vote. In this case - federal M.P's. Currently, there is no legislation that allows this. RECALL is not an easy process to accomplish. It is not intended to foster fear of sabotage or hinder a current government. Health & Wellness FORMING A LOCAL ONTARIO HEALTH TEAM

Several healthcare organizations in the City of Kawartha Lakes are discussing the formation of a local Ontario Health Team (OHT) to better coordinate care and services for local residents. On February 26, the Ministry of Health & Long Term Care announced its intention to better connect the health care system by implementing Ontario Health Teams. Ontario Health Teams are groups of providers and organizations that are clinically and fiscally accountable for delivering a full and coordinated continuum of care to a defined geographic population. Our geographic population lives within the City of Kawartha Lakes (CKL). At present, the organizations that are preparing a joint self-assessment to potentially form a local OHT include Community Care City of Kawartha Lakes, Kawartha North Family Health Team, Canadian Mental Health Association Haliburton Kawartha Pine Ridge, Extendicare Kawartha Lakes and Lakeland Village, and Ross Memorial Hospital.

Caygeon De ture ture Caygeon De

These organizations have long partnered to serve their shared communities. They currently run joint programs and services under various formal agreements and Memoranda of Understanding. If approved, the formation of this OHT would build on these existing partnerships to provide seamless and coordinated care for our CKL residents. If the group’s self-assessment is approved, the OHT will focus initially on enhancing coordinated care and services to a target population that includes seniors over 65 years who live alone or have a poor support network; who are frail, with complex medical needs or mental health or addictions issues who find it hard to navigate the healthcare system; and who have been hospitalized within the last year. As the work of the OHT evolves, the scope of care and services as well as the patient/client/resident focus would expand. The self-assessment to form the local OHT will be submitted by the provincial deadline of May 15. The Ministry of Health & Long Term Care will be inviting those that are ready to submit a detailed application. The first phase of OHT implementation is planned for this fall. Feedback will be welcome throughout this process. Please watch for opportunities to provide feedback, share suggestions, and identify current gaps in services.

have increased five-fold over the past 10 years. This has led the present government to question the appropriateness of this expense. Of course, there’s now an online petition you can sign asking that Premier Ford be the first to experience the procedure without anesthetic. Sign me up! As with many other tests, this one has a lot of preparation. And it’s certainly not on anyone’s favourites list. Because everything down there has to be empty, you have to drink a tasty concoction that will help the process. Then you need to stay close to the bathroom for about 12 hours. I’m sure that they have been able to make this stuff at least taste better than my last kick at it 10 years ago. One can but hope. When you reach the “golden age”, we just add the colonoscopy to the list of regular medical testing like cardiograms, mammograms and blood work. Even with the unpleasant preparation, time under anesthetic and asking a friend to chauffeur me to and from the hospital, in the long run the colonoscopy is just an inconvenience for a few days. Better to be safe than sorry, I always say.

FINDING TREASURES

By Deb Crossen

Just like the spring return of the robins comes another traditional sign of spring ... Yard Sales! The Victoria Day weekend signals the unofficial beginning of that season that many weekend warriors look forward to. What does it take to make a good yard seller? Here are a few tips ... Advertising works: In this day and age of the internet, email, facebook and texting, getting the word out to your friends is pretty simple. But do you really want to see your old stuff in your friend’s next yard sale? Getting to the larger audience is key, so think about placing an ad in your community newspaper (The Kawartha Promoter comes to mind). It’s an inexpensive way to let more people know about it. Signage: Visit your local hardware store or big box store and you’ll find the pre-made plastic “alligator board” signs that you can put up along the roadside and in front of your house a few days before the sale. Or if you want to get creative, you can have a signpainting party with your friends in advance of the event and do your own. Make sure you can see the important details (date, time, address) clearly so your potential buyers can read it. And don’t forget to go out and take the signs down when the sale is over or you’ll have stragglers for days. Organization: There’s nothing worse for a buyer than having to search through mounds of stuff for what you want. So it’s best to take some time and organize your stuff into groups – glassware, books, games, small appliances, etc. If you’ve got clothes in the sale, string some line between the trees and hang the clothes up for people to see. And make sure the size of the garment is visible! Displays: Consider renting a few plastic tables or borrowing them from friends in order to display your items in the best possible light. If you have books in boxes, put them up on a bench or table so people don’t have to bend over. You can always use the flap of the box for your signage, too. Pricing: After you’ve put your items out, use some masking tape or little self-adhesive dots to put prices on items. There’s nothing more annoying for a buyer than having to constantly ask about pricing, especially when you get busy with other customers. Have the right change: Hit the bank before your sale to get smaller bills, loonies, toonies and quarters. If you’ve priced your items right, you shouldn’t need dimes and nickels. Carry your money with you in a fanny pack and never leave it unattended. Power: If you’re selling any power tools or small appliances, it’s always a good idea to have an extension cord or power supply handy so people can try out the item before they buy. Take a final look: Once you’ve got everything out and priced, take a walk to the end of your driveway or street and look back at your sale area. Rearrange it until it looks as inviting as possible. Whether you’re buying or selling, enjoy the experience!

Business and Services

Crazy Monkey Tree Service is a tree care and removal business serving Bobcaygeon, Lindsay, Fenelon Falls, Cameron, Coboconk, Norland, Buckhorn, and Dunsford areas. We offer a variety of services from lot clearing, tree pruning, tree cabling, and stump grinding, to hazardous tree removal and insurance work. We also offer free estimates and consultations.

Why Hire Us

Tasks such as tree removals can be extremely dangerous for individuals that are not trained to do so safely. Hiring professionals to do such jobs is a great way to prevent any possible injuries/damages that may occur if these tasks are completed improperly. We offer advice regarding the removal as well as tree care. Crazy Monkey is also fully licensed, liability insured and covered through WSIB for workplace safety. This reassures customers that any injuries and/or damages that could occur on the job site are completely covered.

Emerald Ash Borer

The emerald ash borer is a small insect that damages and kills trees within one to four years of infestation. The ash borer has just recently become more prevalent in central Ontario. The fact that it has very few natural enemies, combined with the fact that native ash trees have limited resistance to attack, these insects have become a major problem very quickly. Typically, within six years of a woodlot infestation, more than 99% of the ash trees will have been attacked and killed. The prevalence and area infested by ash borer is expected to continue to expand, mostly through the movement of infested material such as firewood. Trees affected by the ash borer become a hazard as they become weak, and because of this, it is recommended you get your ash trees inspected. If your trees have been infested, they may need to be removed to prevent further spread of disease. However, trees can also be injected with insecticides to protect them from being attacked by the ash borer. Our company supervisors are more than happy to take a look at any questionable trees and make suggestions to mitigate the infestation.
