I don’t know about you, but the recent tragedies in Humboldt, Saskatchewan and Toronto have left me feeling that some media – broadcast, print and social – are guilty of over-telling the stories. It isn’t enough anymore to just report the news of the event, but they have to go into minute detail of the who, what, where, when and particularly the why of it all. I don’t mean to trivialize the tragedies – losing loved ones in a major calamity is heartbreaking. But come on … how many times do we have to see the crash site or bodies in the street? To me, that’s Too Much Information! One report I saw on Global News after the Toronto incident featured “experts” talking about the dark net (the blacker side of the internet where predators and, in my opinion, weirdos hang out). It focused on one young man who had a beef with women and was overtly inciting others to “join him” in his revenge against women who had rebuffed any advances. Do I really need to see this? What good is it going to do the victims’ families or for that matter,

add to the news value of the story? I find that the sensationalism is off the charts with speculation, rumours and incorrect information distribution. I understand the need to sell papers or get viewers to your newscasts, but surely the “news” of the tragedy is enough. I feel that the constant barrage of sensationalism is just going to make us more desensitized to tragic situations that make the news. We’re being fed a diet of horrific images of not only the victims, but witnesses and family members in their moments of grief. I don’t believe it is the public’s right to know “how they’re feeling”. Shoving a camera in someone’s face after they’ve witnessed something so horrific is just “tabloid journalism” that many of us in this profession despise.

Municipal government has always been the most accessible level of government for your average citizen. This accessibility has allowed citizens concerned about issues of local interest that affect their everyday lives to come forward, exercise their rights as citizens, and advocate for the changes they need to occur. April 24th’s marathon Council meeting was an excellent example of people fighting city hall on issues about which they are passionate, and largely emerging victorious. Barron Boulevard Sidewalks The first citizens’ deputation dealt with the issue of a sidewalk to be built on Barron Boulevard in the East Ward of Lindsay. The city was already staking out the street for 225 meters of sidewalk that would cost almost $41,000 to install. All 14 people living on that street agreed that they did not want a sidewalk as it would reduce the parking they currently have in their driveways and force more cars to park on the street. City staff argued that the original subdivision plan called for sidewalks, and while the area could probably survive without a sidewalk right now, dozens of new homes are slated for construction in the immediate area that would necessitate the building of sidewalks in the very near future. The city was also fearful of the precedent this would set for services being provided by developers in subdivisions soon to be built. Council referred the issue to staff for further study, and ordered sidewalk construction to be halted. The residents of Barron Boulevard were well rewarded with a two-week reprieve. Surplus Lots in Bethany The second citizens’ deputation dealt with two surplus lots in the village of Bethany, which both Manvers Township Council and later the City of Kawartha Lakes Council had declared surplus and offered for sale.

A local developer had expressed interest in buying the lots, but local residents had another plan. The lots have been community green space since 1970, and local children have used the two-acre parcel as their private forest preserve for decades. Parents argued passionately that the green space should be preserved and with community involvement and fundraising one of the lots should become a public park. In a procedural rarity, Councillor Stauble challenged the Chair, Mayor Letham, on a point of order regarding the vote on this issue, and won. Longtime political pundits could not remember the last time a Mayor lost a procedural challenge. When the issue finally came to a vote, the citizens of Bethany kept their green space with a promise of consultation on a more formalized park on one of the lots. Speed Reduction A resident of the Hamlet of Lotus presented a deputation on reducing the speed in and around the intersection of Ballyduff Road and Lotus Road. The city had already agreed to reduce speeds from 80 to 50 kilometres per hour in a 250-metre stretch west of the intersection. The deputation presented wanted the speed reduced for almost a kilometre west of the intersection. The road was described as a main thoroughfare in the area, frequented by numerous gravel trucks and farm equipment on a daily basis. Three recent accidents, largely caused by excessive speed, were described in detail. The City was not sure the new limit was enforceable, or that people would slow down on a consistent basis. When the vote was called, councillors once again supported the petitioning citizens over city staff, extending the new 50 kilometre per hour zone the full 950 meters requested. Today was proof positive that you can challenge City Hall and win by presenting a compelling and well-thought-out argument.

The City of Kawartha Lakes is going to help residents with their spring clean up efforts. Council has endorsed a week of “No Charge Residential Clear Bag Drop Off” at all City landfills. During regular landfill hours of operation between May 14 to 27, there will be no charge to drop off clear garbage bags of residential waste. Bags must contain ions apply.less than 20% recyclable material with no hazardous waste. During this time as well, residential leaf and yard waste will also be accepted for no charge provided it is in paper bags. Please keep in mind that during this time, traffic at the landfill may be heavier than usual. Landfill staff will be making their best efforts to move traffic through lineups as quickly as possible. To comply with provincial legislation everyone will be required to scale in and out of the landfill. Thanks to all residents who have helped achieve significant improvements to reduce our waste, recycle more and protect our natural environment. In 2017, together we achieved: • On an annual basis, we are collecting 20% less waste and 11% more recycling at the curb. • Through the Clear Bag Program, we reduced the amount of waste going into City landfills by 1600 ng Spain & tonnes. Portugal: Alhambra Palace, Granada • Support for Curbside Battery Collection diverted 12,000 lbs of batteries from landfills. • The Habitat for Humanity re-useable bin at the Lindsay landfill has kept 1.3 tonnes of re-usable goods out of our landfills. During these special weeks, regular tipping fees will apply to drop off for the following: large items including Freon items; mattresses and box springs; construction and demolition materials; institutional and commercial waste; waste not in clear bags; mixed waste loads containing 20% or more recyclables and black or green bags; contaminated soil; boats, boat and bale wrap; RVs; septage; and furniture. A HUGE WIN FOR THE ‘LITTLE GUY’

It took almost six years and more than $200,000 of their own money, but a group of Trent Lakes residents took on a quarry giant and came out with a win to stop the Dewdney Mountain Farm mega quarry in the municipality. In 2012, Trent Lakes Council and the Ministry of Natural Resources voted in favour of an Official Plan Amendment to allow for the zoning of the quarry on Ledge Road. The quarry was all but approved with one lone appeal pending. At issue was the noise mitigation. The quarry originally said they would need to use private property to erect the noise mitigation features such as huge concrete walls. The residents appealed saying they hadn’t given permission for the company to use their property. The courts agreed, sending the issue back to the Ontario Municipal Board. Three days were set aside for the hearing with the Ontario Municipal Board in March. At the hearing, lawyers for Dewdney presented changes they had made to address the noise that did not require the use of private property. But it turned out that those amendments to the plan were not enough and in April, the opponents heard the words they’d been hoping for. According to the written decision, “Having come to the conclusion that there is insufficient evidence at the present time to be assured that there will be efficacious noise mitigation to the affected sensitive receptors on Ledge Road and

Quarry Road, and that policy compliance requires such assurance, the Tribunal cannot, in the public interest, authorize the use of the Site for quarry purposes. The Zoning Amendment cannot be approved at this time.” Adri Eastman was one of the Appellants and a Trent Lakes resident who expressed her satisfaction with the Tribunal ruling. “This decision means the world to me. We always knew if the right person could decipher the proper information, it would clearly show that this location is not the place to destroy, given all the issues of people, environment, water, Dewdney Caves, etc.” What happens next is anyone’s guess, as Dewdney Mountain Farm could come back with a revised plan and go head with the quarry. But opponents say that isn’t as easy as it sounds and there will be a lot of hoops Dewdney will have to jump through first.

Many people are jumping on the rain barrel bandwagon, and for good reason. Not only is it good for your plants and soil, but using a rain barrel helps reduce runoff pollution and control the moisture levels around the foundation of your house. The Firefighters Association of Trent Lakes is holding a fundraiser online where you can purchase your rain barrel and some accessories and the money comes back to the community. Then, on Saturday, May 26, you can pick up your order at the Nogies Creek Fire Station #4 (beside the Trent Lakes Municipal Office) and also get your car washed for a donation. Somewhere up in heaven, my parents must be having a good chuckle. Their youngest daughter has joined the Horticultural Society. Growing up in Verulam Township, I hated gardens and everything to do with them. From before I was born, until age 17, my parents ran a market garden business on our farm. My mother also had a large flower garden. She always won prizes for her dahlias at the flower show and went on to become a life member of the Horticultural Society. Before spring even thought of arriving, our farmhouse windows would be filled with pots of tomato, cucumber and squash plants fighting for the sunlight. Potato planting started earliest in the garden. Dad would sit in the basement for hours cutting seed potatoes with his jack knife, so that there was an eye in each piece. Even before I went to school, I could plant potatoes. Dad would use the

tractor to plough a furrow the length of the field. He would cut a branch off a tree to the right length so I could get the pieces spaced properly. I still grow potatoes in our garden, but on a much smaller scale. No stick required. We grew and sold vegetables at our roadside stand to some of the stores in Bobcaygeon. Peeling green onions and washing beets and carrots in a tub of cold water was never fun unless someone started a splash fight. Running a market garden business was hard work, but we always ate well. The May meeting of the Bobcaygeon and District Horticultural Society will be held on Thursday, May 17 at Knox Presbyterian Church. The guest speaker is Vern Buckstable from Peterborough Green Up, who will be speaking about fruit trees. The meeting starts at 7pm, but come out early to view our spring flower show and enjoy a coffee. Don’t forget the Horticultural Society annual plant sale at Kawartha Settlers’ Village on Saturday, May 26. The sale opens at 9am. MORE THAN JUST A PET

In 300 communities across Canada, including Bobcaygeon and Fenelon Falls, volunteers will take part in the Pet Valu Walk for Dog Guides. The Walks, supported by the Lions Foundation of Canada, raise funds to help train dog guides for Canadians with visual, hearing, medical or physical disabilities. Each dog guide costs $25,000 to raise and train and are provided at no cost to qualified applicants. Lions Foundation does not receive any government funding and relies solely on donations and fundraising events such as the Walk for Dog Guides. These amazing dogs are trained in several categories: Canine Vision, Hearing Ear, Seizure Response, Service, Autism Assistance and Diabetic Alert. Each Walk is organized by local volunteers: the Fenelon Falls & District Lions Club and the Bobcaygeon & District Lions Club. To date, the Walks across Canada have raised more than $15 million. In Fenelon Falls, the event takes place on Saturday, May 26 with registration at 9am at the Lions Den Building, Veteran’s Way Fairgrounds. The Walk starts at 10am. This is the first year for the Walk in Bobcaygeon, taking place on Sunday, May 27. Registration is at 9am at the Lion’s Hall (55 Main Street) with the Walk starting at 10am. Harry Manx is one of my favourite musicians. He is on his cross Canada Faith Tour and I caught up to him in Alberta. He’s looking forward to coming to Lindsay, he loves Ontario in the spring. Though born on the Isle of Mann he’s Canadian and his parents lived in Buckhorn. Harry was a roadie and soundman for many Canadian bands. Influenced by Muddy Waters, Willie Dixon, and all the Chicago guys, his first love is the blues. He became a busker in Europe and Japan to hone his craft and develop an interaction with an audience. And then he went to India! Seduced by the sounds of the sitar he created a combination of Blues and East Indian sounds that pull at my heart strings. Dubbed “mysticssippi” his instruments include the slide guitar, harmonica, sixstring banjo, Ellis stomp box, and mohan veena -- a cross between a slide guitar and sitar, invented by his mentor Vishwa Mohan Bhatt, with whom he studied in India for over 5 years. Harry’s songs sigh with love and loss (‘Don’t You Forget to Miss Me’) and a sly touch of humour (‘Dog My Cat’). He wants to touch people deeply with his lyrics. Taking classics, such as Willie Dixon’s ‘Spoonful’ and infusing them with an eastern flair completely to make it his own with echoes of the original wandering through. ‘Baby Please don’t Go’ (attributed to Big Jo Williams) is classic blues which will make you want to get up and move. This melding of East and West is wonderful in this age of global tensions. But, as Harry says, the world is getting smaller, musically. Here are some fun facts about Moms from the Animal Kingdom that you can share with your family about Mother’s Day. • A female oyster over her lifetime may produce over 100 million young. • A mother giraffe often gives birth while standing, so the new born’s first experience outside the womb is a 1.8-meter (6-foot) drop. • Just like people, mother chimpanzees often develop lifelong relationships with their offspring. • Kittens are born both blind and deaf, but the vibration of their mother’s purring is a physical signal that the kittens can feel - it acts like a homing device, signaling them to nurse. • Depending on the species, female octopuses lay between 50,000 and 200,000 eggs, which require about 40 days to develop. During this time, mothers protect their eggs from predators and oxygenate the eggs by blowing water currents over them. • African elephants have a tough pregnancy; they carry their babies for 22 months before giving birth. • Killer whale and bottlenose dolphin calves do not sleep for a whole month after they are born, and therefore, neither do their mothers.

Connecting with mom on the OTHER SIDE

I believe that we never really lose touch with someone who has passed away. While I may not be religious in a formal way, I am very spiritual. I believe we have a connection with loved ones passed and through those who have a deeper intuition, we can make that connection even stronger. Okay, I know some of you are now going to stop reading this column. But that’s okay, John wasn’t a believer either. His eyes would glaze over when I started talking about a trip to Kawartha Mediums and an awesome connection I get with my Mom and Dad. But for those believers, keep reading. I attended an event last summer at Kawartha Settlers’ Village, put on by the Kawartha Mediums from Bobcaygeon. They brought acclaimed Evidential Medium, Anthony Mrocka, to Bobcaygeon for an evening of spirit connection. I wasn’t expecting to

get a reading in a crowd of about 75 people, but I did. It was rather embarassing, actually, as my Mom wouldn’t stop talking through Anthony. I felt the need to apologize to the audience at one point because the reading kept going on and on. The point is, though, that I did connect with my Mom and Dad and that gave me a sense of comfort. Kawartha Mediums is bringing Anthony back, this time at Market Hall in Peterborough on May 26. LUKE MCMASTER RESCHEDULED

Last month, the Bobcaygeon Music Council had to cancel the Luke McMaster concert due to the ice storm. Now, it’s been rescheduled for Sunday, May 27. All those with tickets from the postponed concert will be able to use them on this date. Formerly one half of Canadian duo McMaster & James, Luke McMaster cut his teeth on some of the biggest acts of the day, including sharing the stage with Randy Bachman, Justin Timberlake, Christina Aguilera and more. ART FESTIVAL IN TOP 100

The Buckhorn Fine Art Festival has once again been recognized as one of the Top 100 festivals and events in Ontario. Buckhorn CRAFT SHOW

There are craft shows and then there are CRAFT SHOWS. The annual Buckhorn Spring Craft Show is one of the latter. This year is the show’s 36th annual, held on Victoria Day Weekend at the Buckhorn Cultural Centre (Buckhorn Community Centre) Saturday, May 19 and Sunday, May 20. There will be about 75 artisans, including 15 new vendors, from all across Ontario, featuring the very best selection of Canadian handcrafted seasonal, country, traditional and contemporary crafts. A Sad Day For Democracy

What do the voters of Stormont-Dundas-South Glengarry, Perth-Wellington, Oxford, Niagara West, Nipissing and Haliburton-Kawartha Lakes-Brock have in common? As of publishing, the voters in these ridings have only their sitting MPP to vote for in the provincial election. No other mainstream party has declared a candidate. There is no law that says that parties must nominate a candidate in all ridings, and no law that prevents an incumbent candidate from running unopposed. Regardless of the law, most would agree that it is not good for democracy when candidates are acclaimed -- issues are not discussed, and voters are not given a choice. All six of the ridings under discussion are held provincially by the Conservative Party. In five of the six cases, the sitting member is a veteran of multiple election victories over all challengers, and in a few cases including our riding, the district is acknowledged as a “safe Tory seat.” As a keen observer of politics, I have the greatest of respect for anyone who is prepared to park their lives for weeks on end to participate in an election at any level. Politicians are not forthcoming if they claim they aren’t competitive. Any I have known run to win, and relish vanquishing their opponents, and the bigger the margin of victory the better. Elections are draining, all-

consuming activities, especially if you know you will probably lose regardless of the campaign you run. A friend of mine ran for the Green Party in the last election, and actually took a leave from work so he could properly contest the campaign. He went all in, and still finished fourth out of the mainstream candidates. He put on a brave face, but I know he was deeply disappointed. Elections are also very expensive to participate in, and the majority of these sitting members have welloiled and well-funded political machines just waiting for the writ to be dropped. They have barns full of signs from their previous campaigns and a small army of committed volunteers who will get the signs on peoples’ lawns, as well as brochures into peoples’ mailboxes. Challenging those kinds of odds takes a special kind of person. Our local MPP needs to be asked hard questions about what she really thinks about Doug Ford. People have told me the relationship is civil at best, strained at worst. Voters want to know our MPP’s solutions to skyrocketing hydro fees, a health care system under strain, and what solutions her party has that will bring meaningful jobs back to Haliburton-Kawartha LakesBrock. I hope some brave and talented individuals step forward who will challenge the sitting members in all six of these currently uncontested ridings. The voters of these ridings deserve it, and democracy is only well served when a civil and intelligent discussion of important issues is had with all points of view and options aired.

Andrea Horwath, the leader of the Ontario New Democratic Party since 2009, should be the happiest person in the province right now. With a provincial election only months away, she will be running against a Liberal Premier who is deeply unpopular outside of Toronto and a new and untested Conservative leader who has the potential any given day to say the most outrageous things imaginable. The NDP should be measuring the curtains for the Premier’s office and contemplating who will serve in the cabinet, but they aren’t. Their public polling numbers remain stubbornly mired around 25 percent of the Ontario electorate and outside their bastions in northern Ontario, Hamilton and a handful of urban centers in the Golden Horseshoe, their message seems

to be falling on deaf ears. Horwath is a hard-working, intelligent and committed democratic socialist, but she would be the first to admit that her public image is hardly scintillating, and won’t make too many progressives in Ontario forget Howard Hampton or Stephen Lewis. Horwath faces two enormous problems, one surprisingly from the left and one from the right. Premier Wynne has outflanked the NDP, and for all intents and purposes is more progressive on paper than the NDP. Doug Ford, the new Conservative leader, is already cutting into Horwath’s blue collar support with his well-rehearsed “everyman” persona, despite the fact that Ford is a millionaire many times over. Horwath knows that anything short of Premier or leader of the Official Opposition will spell the end of her political career provincially. With that motivation in mind Horwath and the NDP have rolled out a number of innovative and populist election promises that seem to be gaining some traction. • NDP promises include lowering hydro prices by 30 percent after returning the utility to 100 percent public ownership. • Horwath also promises Pharmacare that covers all Ontarians, not just those under 25 who are currently covered by the Liberal program. • Progressives are excited by the promise of a Public Dental Plan that will ensure that all Ontarians get access to necessary dental care regardless of income. • Horwath has promised to eliminate student debt by converting current student loans into grants, saving post secondary students years of repaying their educational mortgage. The NDP can take heart that current polling indicates that Horwath is the most trusted political leader in Ontario, sitting with approval numbers far ahead of both Ford and Wynne. Unfortunately her own personal support has failed to translate as support for the party. Unless the NDP can re-establish a base in Metro Toronto at the expense of the Liberals, it is going to be a tough slog for Horwath. Assuming polling does not shift significantly, perhaps the most relevance Horwath can hope for is holding the balance of power in a minority parliament, which some pundits have predicted, likely with Doug Ford as Premier. It promises to be an interesting next eight weeks, and it will be intriguing to see if Horwath can channel her own personal political desperation into a message and a personality that rings true with more Ontarians.

It is less than a month until our concert on May 26 and we are now polishing everything up to give the best performance that we can. KSV HONOURS LOCAL MAN

The Board of Directors of Kawartha Settlers’ Village has bestowed the prestigious designation of “Regent” on James “Jim” Outram. The designation is in recognition of Jim’s donation to the Village of a horse-drawn passenger sleigh and some hand tools he acquired at the Boyd estate auction. The sleigh is significant for Settlers’ Village because it was built in the 1900s at the Moore Carriage Works in Bobcaygeon. The sleigh came into Jim’s possession in the 1960s from the Ventress-Smith families located at Nogie’s Creek. In 2010, the sleigh was completely restored to its original condition by Don Outram of Tory Hill, who installed wheels on the sleigh so it could be used in parades at any time of year. The Outram family entered the sleigh in many local parades and was used in the Bobcaygeon Winter Carnival in the 1960s to take residents for sleigh rides, usually driven by Barry Crowe with one of his many horses. It was also used for family outings with a borrowed horse from Eric Thurston.

Health & Wellness Exploring integration opportunities

On March 28, the Board of Directors of the Central East Local Health Integration Network (LHIN) passed a motion directing Peterborough Regional Health Centre (PRHC) and Ross Memorial Hospital (RMH) to explore integration opportunities, including the delivery of clinical and front-line services, backoffice functions, leadership and governance. The same motion also requested that a joint directional plan be developed to guide this formal process between the two organizations. Under current provincial legislation, both the Central East LHIN and the hospitals within it have a legal duty to identify and explore opportunities for integration of the services we provide for patients. The joint directional plan will be submitted to the Central East LHIN on or before June 28, 2018 for review by the LHIN Board at its June open Board meeting. The joint directional plan will include a process for extensive consultations with internal, external and regional stakeholders. Due diligence and stakeholder consultation will be paramount to this process since no decisions related to this integration opportunity have been made at this time. Delivering the highest standard of health care is a shared goal for PRHC and RMH. This commitment requires ongoing consideration of the changing needs of the region’s population, evolving quality and safety goals, developing and delivering new services, and the sustainability of existing services. Nurses have one of the most important jobs on the planet, in my opinion. In hospitals, clinics, doctors’ offices, retirement homes or in your home, nurses bring comfort to us in our time of need. So it’s only fitting that nurses of all types, whether they’re Registered Nurses, Registered Practical Nurses or Nurse Practitioners, be recognized during Nursing Week from May 7 to 13. It’s important to note that Florence Nightingale helped to change the nature of the profession forever. Around the early to late 1900’s, nursing was becoming more important than ever, as nurses were needed on the front lines of the many wars being waged, from the Crimean War to the Civil War. Nurses were sent to attend to the sick and wounded soldiers in battle. Florence Nightingale began her illustrious nursing career as a nurse within the Crimean War that took place in the mid 1850’s, tending to injured soldiers on the battlefield. When looking at how the nursing profession has progressed since its inception when nurses were largely Catholic nuns to the bustling industry it is today, it’s important to understand that the reason for this occurring is due primarily to the added specialties that current and prospective nurses could choose to focus in. As nursing is generally all about the care of a person, a nurse’s duties today can cover a large variety of different practices. They can specialize in a particular field including pediatrics, neonatal, emergency medicine or disease specialties. They can work in any number of institutions, government departments, our armed forces or in our communities. During Nursing Week, and even year-round, we should make a point to thank these men and women for helping us navigate through our healthy lives.

Joan Rhodes February 27, 1929 – April 13, 2018 Original Resident of Victoria Place

In her 90th year, Joan passed at Ross Memorial Hospital. She was predeceased by Robert (2009), her husband of 60 years, and their younger son, Wayne (2017). She leaves her older son, Bryan (Kathy) of Bobcaygeon, and her daughter Lynda (Stephen Sprague) of Georgia. Joan was the beloved grandmother of Tim (Andrea) Rhodes of Texas; Emily (Curtis) Dumais of Kapuskasing; Erin (Steven) Kupfer, and Thomas Sprague of Georgia. She delighted in her six great-grandchildren: Marianne, Ben, Brady, Madeline, Makenna, and Morgan. Those who knew Joan will remember her as a woman of strong will and stronger opinions. She lived her life on her own terms, and made her own decisions about how it would end. Thanks go out to the doctors, nurses, and support staff at Ross Memorial Hospital, who made Joan’s final days as comfortable as possible. A private family service will be held at a later time.
