OVER THE BACK FENCE
‘Tis the season! There is so much going on throughout the region to celebrate the holidays! There are Santa Claus parades, craft markets, festivals of trees, carol performances and, of course, full-blown town events for retailers and special interest groups. It’s easy to get caught up in the “gotta go to all of them” that we can lose sight of what’s really important, especially at this time of year, and that is helping others. Many of the events are fundraisers for not-for-profit organizations, so that’s an easy must-do. When you buy something, you know it’s going to the organization or to support a local artisan. There are many other ways you can help, too. Get together with friends and family and instead of exchanging gifts (who needs another pair of socks, am I right?) make a donation to a local cause. Set up a day to go grocery
shopping for the Food Bank or big-box store to pick up some toys for the local toy drive. The shelters are always in need of some staples for their clients, so you could hit the drug store and pick up some feminine or baby products that can be donated. Putting them in a cool gift bag, or purse, can put a smile on someone’s face this holiday season. At some of the local parades, firefighters or service clubs will be collecting donations either in cash or non-perishable food items. So when you head out to the parade, take along something that can be handed over. Here’s something else I saw on Facebook today. It’s a great idea -- sending our military personnel a holiday message and letting them know we’re thinking of them this season. Canada Post will sent the letters at no charge. Send it to this address: Any Canadian Forces Member P.O. Box 5140 Stn. Forces Belleville, ON K8N 5W6 Doing something nice for someone else this holiday season is what it’s all about. Please give if you can and support local! editor@thepromoter.ca

City Hall TREE PRESERVATION SURVEY Kawartha Lakes is taking further steps to protect the environment and grow its tree canopy. Check out the new public engagement project on Jump In, Kawartha Lakes, aimed at getting feedback from the community on a proposed Tree Preservation By-law. Currently, the municipality does not regulate or restrict the removal of trees on privately-owned property. To address environmental concerns and promote a healthier ecosystem, the proposed changes will introduce a permit requirement for property owners looking to remove mature trees under specific circumstances. Fees for the permits will depend on the property size. Exemptions are also being considered for use of firewood for heating homes, Christmas tree farms and removing invasive species, among others. For details on the proposed changes, visit jumpinkawarthalakes. ca/tree-preservation-bylaw The proposed Tree Preservation By-law aligns with the municipality’s strategic priority of a Healthy Environment and is in support of the Council-adopted Healthy Environment Plan 2019 and Lake Management Plans. To participate in this public engagement project: • Fill out the survey on Jump In, Kawartha Lakes. Your feedback will be considered by Council when making decisions about the future By-law. • Send your feedback on the proposed By-law directly to Staff at any time by emailing treebylaw@ kawarthalakes.ca. • Follow the project to stay up-to-date on its progress and receive important notifications. Kawartha Lakes encourages all residents to take part in this initiative, as community input plays a vital role in shaping the future of our environment. Your opinions and feedback are invaluable in preserving the natural beauty of the region and ensuring a sustainable and healthy environment.

forecasted to reach 91,302 by 2021 and 100,000 by 2031. As such, significant growth is forecasted for the municipality. To strategically prepare for this growth and enhance the municipality’s existing transportation network, the City of Kawartha Lakes retained McIntosh Perry to undertake the development of the municipality’s Transportation Master Plan (TMP) update. The TMP is a strategic policy document that will serve as a road map for short-range, mediumrange, and long-range transportation infrastructure investments, as well as multi-modal transportation planning. The Process The TMP update will be developed in accordance with the Provincial Environmental Assessment (EA) Act, following the Approach 1 as outlined in the 2023 Municipal Class Environmental Assessment (MCEA) document. The TMP will cover Phase 1, Problem and Opportunity, and Phase 2, Alternative Solutions, of the MCEA process and facilitate streamlining and implementation of recommended capital works. Have Your Say An important part of this study is consultation with the public, stakeholders, and the municipality’s agency partners. We want to hear from you on the issues and opportunities that you see for the municipality’s transportation system to the horizon year of 2051. At any time during this study, you can provide comments, questions, and concerns to the project team on the TMP Jump In page: https://jumpinkawarthalakes. ca/transportation-master-plan The municipality will also be organizing Public and Stakeholder engagement events to present an overview of the study and existing conditions while outlining alternatives, evaluation, and study recommendations. The project team will host two (2) Public Information Centres (PIC) to gather public input and present findings of the study. Details for the first Public Information Centre are as follows. For the public’s convenience, there will be two different opportunities to participate in PIC 1. • Meeting 1: Tuesday, November 28 from 6pm to 8pm. Taking place at the Fenelon Falls Community Centre (27 Veterans Way, Fenelon Falls) – Community Room • Meeting 2: Wednesday, November 29 at 6pm to 8pm. Live-stream participants will also have the opportunity to ask questions after the presentation using the chat feature.
Your participation in PICs is important. The same material will be presented at both meetings. If you are unable to attend the PIC in person, the display boards and a recording of the presentation will be available online on the TMP Jump In page at a later date. BECOMING BIRD FRIENDLY The municipality is taking significant strides toward achieving Bird Friendly City Certification, an initiative aimed at protecting and supporting bird populations in urban areas. This program, led by Nature Canada, brings together various stakeholders, including nature groups, municipal officials, and community organizations, to create safe and welcoming environments for birds. The osprey, often referred to as “Ontario’s fishing hawk,” holds a special place in Kawartha Lakes’ identity, as these majestic birds are frequently spotted near the municipality’s water bodies. Whether soaring overhead in urban backyards or inhabiting the secluded Carden Alvar in the north, the osprey is an iconic symbol of the region. Their large nests perched atop trees and hydro poles throughout the municipality are a testament to the community’s dedicated efforts to revive their dwindling numbers. The Bird Friendly City of Kawartha Lakes’ (BFCKL) commitment to conservation was recently recognized, as Nature Canada awarded BFCKL with their 2023 Conservation Partner of the Year Award. An official letter was received from Emily McMilan, Executive Director of Nature Canada. Upcoming Events • Bird Friendly City of Kawartha Lakes is offering 6

IPM LOOKING FOR VOLUNTEERS
Submitted by Colleen Collins
The local organizing committee for the 2024 International Plowing Match & Rural Expo is looking for volunteers to help plan and execute a successful event, which is scheduled to take place in Lindsay from October 1 to 5, 2024. The committee is holding a volunteer recruitment night in Fenelon Falls on November 21 at 7pm in the Fenelon Falls Community Centre. A second volunteer recruitment night is scheduled for November 28 at 7pm at Globus Theatre on Pigeon Lake Road, Bobcaygeon. The IPM, which is held in a different community every year, is a multi-day celebration of agriculture and rural living. It includes plowing competitions, live entertainment on multiple stages, hundreds of exhibitors, demonstrations, educational displays/ activities and much more. This event, which has been taking place for more than a century, typically attracts 80,000+ people and has an economic impact of about $25 million (based on tourism industry formulas). So important is the IPM in the province that the provincial legislature traditionally shuts down so members of provincial parliament can attend on opening day. Lindsay was to have hosted the IPM in 2021, but the event was postponed for three years on account of the pandemic. Interested volunteers are encouraged to contact Bob Armstrong, chair of the IPM local arrangements committee at localchair2024ipm@gmail.com *protected email* or at 416-418-3990.
HELPING OUT

MUSIC COUNCIL NOTES
Submitted by April Scott
This weekend is turning out to be a busy one with events taking place all over the village. I hope that the weather will cooperate. Most are happening on Saturday but there is a wonderful concert being held at Trinity United church on Sunday afternoon. BOREAL is coming to town and performing at 2pm in the best venue in Bobcaygeon. So if you want a relaxing few hours, please join us and enjoy the beautiful voices of Tannis, Katherine and Angie whose voices are a magical, musical collaboration who simply love to play music together. If you didn’t purchase a ticket before the concert, there will be a supply at the door. Thank you to Hendren Funeral Home for sponsoring this concert.
GIFT CARD FUNDRAISER
We all have those people on our gift list who would rather shop for themselves, but we know where they shop. Instead of rushing around trying to get all the gift cards, the Buckhorn Community Centre (BCC) has the answer for you and for them! Through a program at the BCC, you can purchase holiday gift cards from a number of great brand-name
retailers all in one place. At the same time, the BCC earns a commission from the supplier. So you’re not only doing a good thing for your gift recipient, you’ll be helping the BCC at the same time! And here’s another way to look at it. If you’re planning on buying groceries, gas, or go to a movie, why not purchase gift cards for items you plan on buying anyways? That helps raise funds for a worthy cause without costing you anything extra. Easy, right? Just stop by the BCC during regular business hours and pick up a submission form. There are two important dates – November 23 and December 7. Those are the deadlines to get your form in before the cards are ordered. If you’re coming over for the Festival of Trees anyway, just ask one of our friendly volunteers and they can help you out. Please note, if you use a credit card to pay for your order, the commission is reduced, so debit, cash or cheque would be preferred.

CHORISTERS DONATE TO FOOD BANK
After 23 years of singing, the Bobcaygeon Choristers have ended. The choir originated from an idea Barb Dunleavy had during a sing-along at the Legion in 2000. George Hedge became the leader with Nona Erskine as pianist and the choir was created. During the Covid pandemic the choir stopped practices, the pianist (Vivian Hetherington) retired, and some members moved. Once the choir could restart practices, many of those remaining were unable to return. In the Spring of this year, the conductor (Bob Plummer) retired and unfortunately the Choristers could not find a new leader, a pianist or more singers. So, their library of music had to be sold. Recognizing that many families in Bobcaygeon are in need of food, the Choristers decided to donate their remaining funds plus money from the sale of their music library to the Bobcaygeon Food Bank. Recently, the treasurer (Ron Cook) and Bob Plummer gave the Food Bank a cheque for $2,200. Hopefully, the remaining music can be sold to raise more funds to donate.

“JUDGEMENT FREE” FITNESS CENTER
A local Planet Fitness franchise group has built a Mini Judgement Free Zone® in Lindsay, marking the first of its kind in the region. The new fitness center will feature Planet Fitness’ signature purple and yellow colors and branded equipment. The 900 square foot mini facility replicates the judgement free environment of Planet Fitness clubs with 7 pieces of cardio equipment and accessories including medicine balls and yoga mats. It will provide youth members ages 13 and older with the ability to exercise in an inclusive and encouraging workout environment, without the risk of being judged or bullied. Amy Terrill, Executive Director of BGC Kawarthas, said, “Not only is physical fitness a key factor in health and wellbeing, but it’s commonly cited by the youth themselves as an area of need. In our efforts to build skills and confidence for life, this new fitness space will be an excellent addition.” The unveiling is an extension of Planet Fitness’ national philanthropic initiative, The Judgement Free Generation®, designed to help end bullying, build youth self-confidence through fitness, and spread inclusivity and kindness. Bullying has become an all-too-common issue in today’s society. Together with BGC Canada, the nation’s leading youth development organization, Planet Fitness provides BGC youth with access to safe, welcoming spaces where they can build lasting, healthy habits through fitness. “We’re proud to have this opportunity to work with the BGC Kawarthas and provide a welcoming and accepting place for all Club youth to work out and

Horoscopes
Aquarius (Jan. 21 to Feb. 19) It is not always the clear-sighted people who know exactly where they are going who are able to change the world, Aquarius. Sometimes, it is the one who walks in the mist who makes a great discovery. Pisces (Feb. 20 to March 20) Love may be trying to find you, Pisces! Open your eyes, ears and heart to whatever and wherever it may be. Aries (March 21 to April 20) The fall season is a great time to do some heavy duty decluttering, Aries. You probably have many items that can be recycled or donated – and not only does this clear your home, it also clears your mind! Taurus (April 21 to May 21) Your health may cause some concern in the coming days, Taurus, but there is no need for worry. Just take good care of yourself, relax and pay extra attention to healthy habits! Gemini (May 22 to June 22) Are you looking for signposts, Gemini? Something to guide you in your decision-making as you go throughout your days? Look inside yourself for the answers - they are there all along! Cancer (June 23 to July 23) Dear Cancer: “If you are always trying to be normal, you will never know how amazing you can be.”: Maya Angelou. Maya knows what she’s talking about!
Horoscopes Nov. 17 to Dec. 1
By Melodie McCullough
Leo (July 24 to Aug. 23) Leo, the arts, specifically music, will be a big part of your days this phase. Put your heart into them and enjoy them to the fullest. Virgo (Aug. 24 to Sept. 23) Stand firm, Virgo, in your beliefs. They may be tested. Know the facts and, especially, the ‘why’ behind your stance – and don’t let them dissuade you. Libra (Sept. 24 to Oct. 23) You’re feeling confident lately, Libra. You know what you want and you’ll go for it. Be open to new things but beware of any negativite energy. Scorpio (Oct. 24 to Nov. 22) Stay in the present, Scorpio. Try not to let your mind wander to the future with worry – it won’t change what may be. Don’t go to the past either - that’s over and done with and it can’t be changed, either. Sagittarius (Nov. 23 to Dec. 21) Friends and family are proud of you, Sag, even though you may not realize it. Remember: “Over every mountain there is a path, although it may not be seen from the valley.”: Theodore Roethke. Capricorn (Dec. 22 to Jan. 20) Health setbacks will occur but the signs are good that you will recover in due time, Capricorn. Rest and enjoy this time of ease. Kawartha Settlers’ Village
