SINGLE-USE PLASTICS
It is not nearly enough to ask businesses to voluntarily choose alternatives to single-use plastics. In that case, not much will be done because most people (including business owners) only consider short-term consequences rather than long-term consequences of choices made. The bottom line that they consider is what is in it for me – e.g., what is easiest, quickest, most convenient, cheaper and gives a better return. Not considered is what the long-term consequences are for this kind of thinking and behaviour. The economy does not matter one iota when we don’t have a liveable environment. We need to be serious about being good stewards of the environment. And it has to be personal. Many of us would like to have better choices that would help us to cut down on garbage. But, when going shopping we are at the mercy of business owners who choose their products and packaging unwisely. I would like to be able to purchase meat that is not packaged in styrofoam and plastic, but am not able to. I would like to be able to purchase lemons, garlic, avocados, mushrooms, that don’t come in a plastic mesh bag. I would like to be able to purchase things that come in glass recyclable and/or returnable bottles, rather then plastic. We need to stop worrying so much about fashion and be able to purchase good quality, long-lasting clothing. We need to stop the throw away mentality. Businesses need to be legislated into this so that the rest of us can be on board. S. Stoppa, Lindsay

HOUSING DEBATE CONTINUES
This is a reply to S. Rethoret re Seniors Housing in the November 14 edition of Village Voice in The Kawartha Promoter. He was responding to my original letter to the editor printed in the October 31 issue. You state that you agree with me on the plight of seniors trying to live on OAS and CPP with no other income. Then in the next paragraph you state that these seniors have created their own retirement issues by not planning adequately for their own care. You then ask why you and other taxpayers should have to pay additional income tax to assist these seniors. Obviously you don’t share the values of the majority of Canadians that the most vulnerable members of our society should be protected. There are many reasons that a senior could reach retirement age and not have any income other than government pensions. During their lifetime, they could have experienced events such as job loss, death of a spouse, medical problems, etc. Seniors are not in this position by choice. You criticize my plan to help these individuals but do not offer any other plan to help and only offer

Non-confrontational, but thought-provoking and educational, causing myself, who spent a lifetime in the marine industry, to own at least in part the damage so unforeseen by us when we were young, and so blindly ignored, turned to look away by so many even today. Mr. Williams is a kind and forgiving man when he says: “I would just like to think that at the time they didn’t know what they were doing.” Today we know! Today we have no excuse anymore! I commend The Promoter for running this and all the other “Good Stories from Curve Lake First Nation”!

the remark that I sell my house and pay for my own retirement. Tell the senior widow who is trying to survive on $1,500 income and paying over 65 percent of that income for rent that it is her fault that she did not prepare properly for her retirement, as this is your solution to the problem. If you read my plan, you would see that the plan is for low-income seniors who are renting their housing. It is not intended for seniors who own real estate and only seniors whose rent exceeds 30 percent of their income would qualify for assistance that is geared to their income. G. Jones, Bobcaygeon

PARKING PROBLEMS
There is a Parking Study taking place in the City of Kawartha Lakes. More specifically, in Lindsay, Fenelon Falls and Bobcaygeon. Never heard of it? Don`t feel bad, neither has anyone else! It has been so poorly advertised that the attendance by stakeholders and the public has been between one and four people at each meeting. Parking is a big issue, especially in Fenelon and
Bobcaygeon. I attended the Bobcaygeon meeting with the three other stakeholders. We were outnumbered by the staff and the City’s hired consultant, who apparently have already decided that we don’t have a parking problem in Bobcaygeon. Their presentation indicated that we only needed to add 14 new parking spaces until the year 2040, despite the addition of 500 new homes in that same time. The Consultant had taken a parking count, averaged it and decided that we have a 15 percent surplus of parking without taking into consideration summer tourism, growth and the fact that many residents have mobility issues and must use a vehicle to get around. All of us in attendance disagreed, citing many real examples and concerns. There is another meeting scheduled for December 4. I received an email from the City inviting me to attend and used that opportunity to to say how disappointed they were about the poor attendance. Here’s the main problem with this timing. The meeting is mostly for small business owners and stakeholders but it is scheduled for 9:30 in the morning. This is a working day, in probably the busiest shopping time of the year! This is a real problem with the City and I see it all the time. It seems to me that many important meetings held by the City are for the convenience of senior staff and not the residents and taxpayers who cover the cost of the whole thing. It would seem that they have missed the mark and lost another opportunity for meaningful public input!

CHOIRS PERFORM HANDEL’S MESSIAH
Submited by Ruth Fallding
Come out on Sunday, December 15 and hear a selection of glorious choruses from Handel’s Messiah. Lindsay’s own award-winning choir, the Kawartha Lakes Singers (KLS), under the direction of Arlene Gray will be joined by the Cobourg/Port Hope based Northumberland Orchestra and Choir (NOC). The NOC is under the direction of John Kraus. The second half of the concert will feature some Christmas carols and the afternoon will conclude with a rousing Christmas medley audience singalong. Get ready for a full, rich and exciting musical performance. The “Welcome Yule Concert (Messiah)” takes place on December 15 at 2:30pm at Cambridge St. United Church in Lindsay. Tickets are $25 or $5 for for children under 12. The December 15 concert is the first of three in the Kawartha Lakes Singers’ 2019-2020 season. The choir, known for its ability to sing many different styles of music, will be presenting “Music of the 70s” on March 8 in Lindsay and March 10 in Fenelon Falls. Among many 70s favourites, you will hear a great rendition of Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody”. The choir will complete their season on April 26 in Lindsay with another joint collaboration of KLS and NOC. The
concert will feature “A Mass for Peace’ by Karl Jenkins. A three concert KLS season’s ticket is $65. Tickets can be purchased at the door or ordered by email at tickets@klsingers.ca. For more information about the Kawartha Lakes Singers’ upcoming season, go to klsingers.ca.
CHORISTERS’ CORNER
By April Scott
It is almost that time to ‘Come on Ring those Bells’. Along with our guests, The Mitchell Family and the Anglican Bell Choir, we will bring a special Christmas feeling to every family, along with Christmas shortbread, of course. At present, plans are being made to perform a miniChristmas concert at the Kawartha Retirement Suites. We are so lucky and appreciative for the use of the room for our practices and indeed the beautiful piano. The staff also provide us with goodies and coffee at break time during while we do some socializing. A Christmas party is also in the works during the festive season which is always a lot of fun. We hope to see you on December 6 at Trinity United Church on William Street. The concert starts at 7pm. Be sure to come early enough to find your favourite seat. Every chorister has tickets for $15 or you can call 705738-2396. They will also be available at the door. If you visit our Facebook page Bobcaygeon Choristers you will probably find some photos from the concert. Until next time, keep warm and we will see you soon!

HOW TO PAY FOR HOME UPGRADES
Banks are very different now and it is no longer enough to just own your home and have no debt. Prior to 2018, you could easily get an equity loan or line of credit based solely on the value of your primary residence. Not now. The banks are now mandated to show income to mitigate risk. You must show enough income to qualify for the new loan in addition to any other debts or liabilities you pay for month to month. That means, banks will now need to account for property tax payments, heat/hydro costs, condo fees, car payments and any other outstanding monthly debt to ensure that you can sufficiently pay these expenses plus the new loan payment. The problem is, most pensioners report very little income in retirement and subsequently will now not qualify for a new loan or line of credit, even though they probably could easily make their payments and would never dream of defaulting on the loan. If you have been turned down by your bank there are few other options to consider. You can reapply with a family member and use his/her income to help qualify. Of course, the Bank would also take into account their liabilities together with income, so hopefully they have
enough income to cover the monthly payments. Another idea could be to get a margin loan. Most investment firms offer loans that allow clients to use their investment portfolio as collateral and to only pay the monthly interest payments on the balance drawn down. If that doesn’t work, you can still find some lenders that will do “true equity lending” without using income to qualify. These lenders are typically Credit Unions They will usually offer loans up to 65 percent of the appraised value of your property less any outstanding mortgages. They offer a very good product selection, however because they are approving the deal without income, they will charge a slightly higher rate than the “Big Five” Banks.

Aquarius (Jan. 21 to Feb. 19) Don’t assume criticism is meant to humiliate, Aquarius. Accept others’ feedback; realize you can listen to their comments and not take offense; and then decide if their analysis is worthy of your consideration. Pisces (Feb. 20 to March 20) Anger. The dictionary definition is: strong feeling of annoyance, displeasure, or hostility. It comes in all shapes and sizes, from quiet exasperation hiding inside us to open and violent outbursts. But is it worth the trouble? There are other ways to deal with life, Pisces. Find them! Aries (March 21 to April 20) Are you faced with limitations, Aries? The thing you have to ask yourself is if they are real, or illusory? What is really holding you back? Something to mull over! Taurus (April 21 to May 21) Caution is the key word when it comes to finances, Taurus, during this phase. Don’t let impulse rule when it comes to buying certain items. Think things through. Gemini (May 22 to June 22) Planning a winter get-away, Gemini? Why not? Even if it’s just around the bend, any change in scenery is good for the mind and spirit. Cancer (June 23 to July 23) Romance is in the stars for you, dear Cancer. Now, that doesn’t always mean it will become an everlasting love. But there’s nothing wrong with enjoying some excitement while it lasts. Leo (July 24 to Aug. 23) Changes are coming your way, Leo, and you need to prepare for them, remembering that change is not a bad thing. It can mean wonderful new beginnings. Virgo (Aug. 24 to Sept. 23) Your health should be your top concern, Virgo, in the coming weeks. Take care of yourself, and let the world and others make do by themselves for awhile. Rest easy. Libra (Sept. 24 to Oct. 23) The sign of Libra is the sign of justice, balance and harmony. You are often called to contravene and provide advice on how to achieve a compromise. And, of course, you do this well. But don’t feel you always have to bear this burden – encourage others to learn your ways. Scorpio (Oct. 24 to Nov. 22) “I am only one, but I am one. I cannot do everything, but I can do something. And I will not let what I cannot do interfere with what I can do.”: Edward Everett Hale. Don’t let anyone tell you your ideas or your actions don’t count, Scorpio – they can change the world Sagittarius (Nov. 23 to Dec. 21) You’ve enjoyed a lull in your usual hectic schedule, Sag, and it has served you well. Remember, though, there will be some tough decisions still ahead. Capricorn (Dec. 22 to Jan. 20) We’ve said this before, Capricorn. You’re too busy! You MUST find a way to prioritize the things that bring you the most joy – and forget the mundane “must-dos”.

IADOPT FOR THE HOLIDAYS
Submitted by Jewel Chalmers
Fill your pocket with the miracle of love, joy, friendship, and compassion this holiday season by adopting a rescue animal for your family. Henny Venus, the executive director for the Humane Society of Kawartha Lakes (HSKL) is initiating their annual “iAdopt for the Holidays” campaign until December 31. Season’s cheers for the program include lower rescue animal fees and the chance to enter “Canada’s Cutest Rescue Pet Contest.” The contest prizes are sponsored by Royal Canin and PetSmart, for the Ontario Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (OSPCA), in partnership with HSKL’s campaign. A weekly prize package will be given to a randomly selected entry with a “most liked” grand prize at the end of the contest. The grand prize winner will receive free Royal Canin food for a year and the adopted animal can be lavished with fun, care and treats from PetSmart’s generous donation of a $500.00 gift card. You will also be given the chance to show your appreciation to any participating organization of your choice, by presenting a $500 gift card to them. HSKL sweaters and hoodies are also lined up for holiday sales, while stacks of Royal Canin dog and cat food lay in the far corner for the animal’s feast. Donated small new and reasonably priced animal toys wait for a new friend. The “iAdopt for the Holidays” campaign makes people aware of how a family adoption of an orphaned
animal can change their life by adding love and friendship to their animal’s forever home. Families are encouraged to take adoption seriously and decide, as a family, whether the holidays are the best time to adopt. You can find out more at www.hskl.ca.
HELP THE ANIMALS
On December 5, you can help out the Humane Society of Kawartha Lakes while doing your holiday shopping. Tech Electronic Services in Lindsay is holding their annual Holiday Open House from 9am to 7pm. During the event, shoppers can get amazing wholesale prices and play some fun games. Every time you play, you win a prize and 100 percent of the proceeds collected from the day’s games will be donated to animals in need at the Humane Society.
