OVER THE BACK FENCE
As this issue of The Kawartha Promoter hits the streets, there are only a couple of days until the Municipal Election. I’m not going to get into the who did what to whom or why, but I do have some thoughts I’d like to share. First of all, thank you to all the candidates who are running. No matter what the outcome, it takes a lot of time, effort and money to run a campaign, visit with the voters, and attend community events. We have heard over and over again from all of the candidates about the importance of community engagement, transparency and feedback. We need to depend on those who win the prize of election to put those words into action. And not just those words, but to do their best about our roads, quarries, economic development, jobs and so much more. The campaign was full of good ideas from the candidates and the general public at candidate meetings and town halls. I believe it behooves the winning Mayors, Deputy Mayors

and Councillors to gather all those ideas together. It’s time to come together as communities with common goals and discuss solutions to our problems and really listen to one another. Here are a couple of the great ideas I’ve heard: Roving council meetings, especially in the City of Kawartha Lakes with such a vast area to cover; Council meetings in Trent Lakes in the evening; more advertising well in advance about public information meetings and the need for volunteers for Council committees; and more involvement by Councillors at community events. The campaign may be soon over, but the hard work begins in November with the first council meetings.

NEW FACILITY IS ENOUGH
In response to Jennifer Wilson’s article titled, “A New Wellness Centre in Coboconk?”, it is patently obvious to me that the only reason to “...renovate and expand the Coboconk Train Station building..” is to fill the Coboconk Chamber’s coffers with provincial and federal health dollars. Considering the growing scarcity of these dollars means they would be better placed elsewhere! With demolition of the old Coboconk Medical Centre building due to structural deficiencies, a new facility was erected on the east end of the property. It Norma Long - Manager/Broker

is larger than the former health site, with more than an adequate number of parking spots, more space for patient care, offices and records storage. The builders even added a second rest room! According to the article, the rationale for another move of Dr. Shabaz Warsi’s and his staff’s practice is to accommodate: “... two or three doctors, a dentist and other complementary practitioners such as senior’s foot care, massage, physio and chiropractic care.” That is a flawed rationale: just consult with the fine folks in Kinmount who have been advertising for a second doctor for years. Don Guillod, Bobcaygeon
CORRECTION: We received a call from a reader who asked for clarification about the need for a new Medical Centre in Coboconk. In the article by Jennifer Wilson, it was inferred that there was no facility for the current physician. We asked Jennifer to clarify for us. Here is her response: “There is still a doctor practicing in town - Dr Warsi. His practice is housed in a temporary portable trailer at the moment because the Coboconk Medical Centre was torn down - not an ideal situation, and certainly part of the reason for the need for a new building. Sorry for the confusion - the Medical Centre building was closed and torn down, but the doctor remains practicing here.”

The Caygeon Cruisers Car Club of Bobcaygeon ran its annual car show this year on September 15, which was very successful. All the net proceeds from the car show will be handed over to the local food banks. Bobcaygeon Helps Food Bank will receive $2,550 and the Dunsford Food Bank will receive $1,000. Thanks to all our participants, visitors and to Stewart Morrison Insurance, the main sponsor for our event.
KNIT & LIT
Trent Lakes Public Library has a great program for local crafters of all ages. It doesn’t matter if you’re an expert or a beginner, these informal gatherings of knitting, crocheting and fibre arts have something for every level. All you need to bring are your craft materials. If you are looking for a project, they will supply the yarn and pattern to create items for local shelters. They can also help teach people who want to learn the basics. And, of course, there are a variety of crafting books available in the library! Knit and Lit is held at 11am every Friday at the Buckhorn Branch of the Trent Lakes Public Library.

If you have thought about changing your career, or starting a side business in beauty services from your home, you need to speak with your broker, or us here at Stewart Morrison Insurance. Your home insurance will not cover you for commercial purposes, but fear not, this specialized coverage is completely affordable. When you are dealing [intimately] with peoples eyes, and permanent facial transformations; proper liability coverage is a must. If you currently own a salon or spa and are looking to add these highly desirable services to your offerings, the same specialty coverage is required - in addition to your current policy. It may actually be a good idea to have your broker review your policy if it has been a while; exposure to new risks could be detrimental to your business. We can help you find the right coverage, at the right cost to you and your operation. We are here for you! SMI we’ll make you SMILE.
CHORISTERS’ CORNER
By April Scott
We hope that you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving and you are enjoying the last few warm days we have been having. We are very pleased that we are still seeing new faces interested in joining our chorister family and we hope that they feel at home with us. There were no birthdays to celebrate at this time, but we are sure there will be more to come shortly. There is really very little other news other than we are enjoying learning the Christmas music. Some of which is really quite difficult!! There are several choristers on the Bobcaygeon Music Council Board, so I would like to tell you a little about us. You may have attended Concerts in the Park concerts in the summer which were very well attended this year. But during the winter months, the Council brings excellent musicians to Bobcaygeon to perform in Trinity United Church. These concerts come under the title of Music Alive and we look forward to the first one on November 17. You will be seeing posters and flyers around the village with more information. Bobcaygeon is suddenly very quiet without tourists and the locks are closed for the season. But there is still plenty to do and to sing about even in the shower! Until next time! LOCAL BRANDS HELP LOCAL CAUSES
Submitted by Dave Poole
Buckeye Surf and Kawartha Lifestyle are proud to announce the donations from their Hip-Town and Lake Life brands for the 2018 season! Annually our company pledges donations based on sales volume of the two brands Hip-Town and Lake Life Apparel. These are customer-driven initiatives; therefore the more units we sell, the more we pledge to charity and local community efforts. Over the last three summers Buckeye Surf and Kawartha Lifestyle have pledged $5 of every Bobcaygeon Hip-Town unit sold to the Gord Downie Fund for brain cancer research at Sunnybrook Hospital. This year, our companies raised another $7,785 adding to a running total of $37,785. Lake Life Apparel, created last year, pledges $5 for every unit sold to Kawartha Land Trust for the stewardship of Boyd Island, and Impact 32 for local initiatives. This year, our companies raised another $5,000 to add to our running total of $9,000 donated to KLT and Impact 32. Buckeye Surf and Kawartha Lifestyle would like to thank our customers for supporting these popular brands. We would also like to thank our graphic designer Nicole Stocks for the popularity of these brands.
A LITTLE EDUCATION GOES A LONG WAY
By Glenna Burns
It is a fact that Cottagers and Indians, a play created by Drew Hayden Taylor, coming to the LAB theatre later this month, has a controversial title. Indeed, the use of the term ‘Indians’ has caused some complaint and confusion in Settler society. When members of the Truth & Reconciliation Community Bobcaygeon asked to hang posters
advertising the production, some people refused, stating the word ‘Indian’ is racist and offensive. After explaining that the play and its title were conceived by a member of the Michi Saagiig Nishnaabeg community, perspectives changed. The posters were accepted. In Canada, the Indian Act still exists and Status Indian is a legal designation in that Act. Among nonIndigenous Canadians ‘Indian’ is usually considered offensive and racist. For others, it has been a word used to bully and shame. By bringing this term ‘Indian’ into the title of his latest play, Drew Hayden Taylor has stirred introspection. His ability to bring humour and satire to the Manomin harvest controversy in the play Cottagers and Indians is an event not to be missed.

Municipal election 2018 MAYORAL CAMPAIGN GETS DIRTY
By Kirk Winter
Over the last month, I have been taken aside by a number of locals who want to share with me something they “know” about one of the candidates for Mayor. I assume they are sharing this “inside information” with me in the hope that I will write a story validating their uninformed speculations as truth. You can certainly tell this is a competitive race for the mayoral chair in the City of Kawartha Lakes as the whisper campaign surrounding the two perceived front runners, Andy Letham and Gord James, has escalated exponentially since Labour Day. There is a good chance that neither candidate has officially sanctioned their supporters to plant these doubts about their opponent. It is more likely that the dirt is being spread by those not affiliated with any
AFE HELLEMAN Councillor for ward 2
campaign or candidate. Nothing appears to be out of bounds as personal foibles, family, business success/failures and who is bankrolling who have reached a fever pitch. It is a sad statement that people engaged and involved in local politics have stooped to this level. Letham, James, and Brian Junkin have very public records as long-serving local Councillors and Mayor. Peter Weygang is very public both online and at meetings with his political beliefs. The public discourse should be focusing on these issues only. The next Mayor of CKL has an immense task on his hands. Issues like infrastructure, taxation, public debt, funding for heritage and cultural groups, development, and staff management all await. It even gets better as the next Mayor is going to have to deal with a Council with only half the Councillors of the previous one. You would have to be naive, or foolhardy, to believe that transition will be seamless. I have had a number of Ward 5 candidates knock on my door and we have talked issues, not innuendos. I have been gratified to discover that not only our incumbent Councillor, but a number of his challengers, have thoughtful and well-reasoned views on important issues, and have not descended to the National Enquirer School of Politics. Online voting has begun. Hopefully our next Mayor is chosen based on platform and record, and the majority of the voters in the City will shut out the noise others are spreading which only weakens democracy in the long run.

ELECTION COULD BE TOUGH ON INCUMBENTS
By Kirk Winter
Over the last five months, I have had the pleasure of covering CKL City Hall for The Kawartha Promoter. I have generally been very impressed with the preparation and subject knowledge that most of the current councillors have possessed. On October 22, many of these competent, hard-working and community-minded individuals could find themselves on the outside looking in as the word on the street frames this vote as a “change election.” People I have spoken to are visibly upset at the direction the City is taking on job development, infrastructure, taxes, and growth. When you push for details from candidates on many of these important issues, there are few specifics forthcoming. This is the kind of reaction to the established order that fuelled Trump and Ford, propelling both to surprising election victories. Locally, the toxicity of this feeling is multiplied exponentially, when the amalgamation/de-amalgamation argument is resurrected for the umpteenth time. It is baffling to me that anyone is still suggesting that de-amalgamation is the solution to any of the problems that CKL is facing. A handful of challengers are also stoking the resentment that exists in their part of the City regarding the belief that, “Lindsay gets everything and we get nothing.” Apparently, some candidates have broadened that argument to include Bobcaygeon on the short list of favoured communities. Incumbents are now the visible face of the Council, and they are feeling this anger firsthand. There are multiple candidates running in every ward; in some there are as many as six candidates. Because of the reduction of wards from 16 to eight, there are
a number of wards like Ward 1 and Ward 6 where incumbent Councillors and former Councillors are pitted against one another in a battle for very few available votes. In Ward 8, five brand new candidates have stepped forward to challenge the councillor there. While this is great for democracy, it has to be scary for those hoping to return to Council. When I asked current Councillors running in these hotly contested wards what had brought out so many new candidates, they were baffled. One asked me to share what I discovered after interviewing all of the other candidates. Anecdotally, I believe that we are going to see many new faces on Council in November. Those who are defeated will spend much time analyzing what they did “wrong” to end up on the losing side of this election. If they are fair to themselves, they have done nothing wrong except be in the wrong place at the wrong time, when anger at anyone representing the established order is the order of the day. Good luck to everyone running, and remember what my father always said to me, “If you don’t vote you lose the right to complain for the next four years.” Use your PIN and cast your ballot. It is important.

Aquarius (Jan. 21 to Feb. 19) Fill your life with experiences, not things. Experiences will teach you, amuse you, entertain you and guide you towards your goals. Objects? All you can do is stare at them! Pisces (Feb. 20 to March 20) Dream beautiful dreams. Sometimes it is good to just dream – you know those dreams may never come true, but, oh, it is so relaxing and self-soothing to imagine good things, dear Pisces. Aries (March 21 to April 20) Criticism can hurt. But it can also help. It depends, as usual, on how you look at it, and your attitude towards it, Aries. Can you learn something from it? Can you use it the next time you try the same thing? Taurus (April 21 to May 21) When others make minor mistakes that inconvenience us, it is easy to forget that everyone makes mistakes, including ourselves, many times a day. Not everyone’s get noticed. Some get noticed more than others, merely because of the nature of their employment. Give them a break today, okay? Gemini (May 22 to June 22) It’s time to treat yourself, Gemini. But don’t think it has to be some big, exotic gift. Good things come in small packages, remember? So, find some little thing that will bring you comfort and joy! Cancer (June 23 to July 23) Displaced anger is not good, Cancer. It happens when we are mad at someone or something beyond our control, and, yet, we “take it out” on someone else. So, please be sure the object of your anger is the one who is responsible.
Leo (July 24 to Aug. 23) New experiences will always bring new challenges, dear Leo. Right now we sense a deep and, at times, overwhelming need to surmount these trials you are facing. Try to keep to a structured agenda. Know your strengths and weaknesses, and, above all, love yourself! Virgo (Aug. 24 to Sept. 23) Hold your head up high, Virgo. There may be people in your circle of acquaintances who may be spreading nasty rumours – but you know they are not true. And that is what is important. Be strong. Libra (Sept. 24 to Oct. 23) Think big, Libra. Now is the time to plunge forward with all those ideas you’ve been tossing about. Now is the time to turn those ideas into reality. Now, we didn’t say be rash. Please plan accordingly. Scorpio (Oct. 24 to Nov. 22) A full moon – the Hunter’s Moon on Oct. 4 – begins your zodiac phase, Scorpio. As squirrels prepare for the long winter ahead by storing food, you, too, need to look ahead and plan for a time that may not be as abundant as now. Sagittarius (Nov. 23 to Dec. 21) “Your need for acceptance can make you invisible in this world. Don’t let anything stand in the way of the light that shines through this form. Risk being seen in all of your glory.”: Jim Carrey. Yes, Sag, don’t be afraid to see and be seen! Capricorn (Dec. 22 to Jan. 20) You MUST realize that you cannot help everyone you know who is lost or suffering. It is too much for your own health. Your friends and family need to stop depending on you to make “everything right”. Tell them!

Health & Wellness NEW TREATMENT FOR ALS
Health Canada has granted market authorization of RADICAVA™ (edaravone) as an intravenous infusion treatment for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a rapidly progressive, neurodegenerative disease. Granted under the Priority Review process, the Notice of Compliance (NOC) authorization was based on a clinical trial in which the primary endpoint was a measurement utilizing the ALS Functional Rating Scale-Revised (ALSFRS-R), a validated rating instrument for monitoring the progression of disability in patients with ALS. “ALS is one of the most serious neurodegenerative diseases due to the crippling loss of function,” said Dr. Angela Genge, Director, Clinical Research Unit and ALS Clinic, Montreal Neurological Institute and Hospital. “New therapies are most welcomed for patients and their families dealing with ALS.” According to the ALS Society of Canada, an estimated 3,000 Canadians currently are living with ALS, an incurable disease that affects the nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. The majority of patients die within two to five years of diagnosis. Symptoms of the condition can be subtle at first, and it can take 12 to 14 months to be accurately diagnosed. “For nearly 20 years, Canadians living with ALS have had only one treatment option – making the Canadian approval of RADICAVA an important and
hopeful milestone for a community that still faces a challenging diagnosis,” said Tammy Moore, CEO, ALS Society of Canada. “It is our hope that the approval of RADICAVA will build momentum for the development of additional therapies, underscoring the importance of research investment and the need for Canadians living with ALS to have timely and equitable access to treatments within the healthcare system.” According to the CBC, Canada is the fourth country to approve the drug, after Japan, South Korea and the U.S.

Submitted by Kawartha Lakes Health Coalition
Under the umbrella of the Ontario Health Coalition, the newly formed Kawartha Lakes Health Coalition chapter is advocating to stop the Ross Memorial Hospital/ Peterborough Regional Health Centre amalgamation, stop the reduction of services at the Ross, and stop hospital staff cuts. Founding members Bonnie Kennedy of Bobcaygeon, Barbara Doyle of Lindsay, and Zac Miller of Pontypool formed the Coalition as a result of the open forum meeting held in Lindsay on September 12. The public consultation meetings may be “on hold” but that does not mean the amalgamation is “on hold”. By working together, there may be a chance to stop it or to reduce the cuts to services that will be offered at our hospital. The organization is participating in a Rally on October 23 in Toronto by the Ontario Health Coalition, and a bus from Lindsay will be made available if a

EATING THE RIGHT PROTEINS
There’s been a lot of action on the internet recently about low-carbohydrate diets. And, while these plans may help people as a weight-loss strategy, they can also cause havoc with our body’s natural processes. New research from the US was recently published in The Lancet. Researchers studied more than 15,000 adults aged 45 to 64 to determine the longer-term effect of carbohydrate restriction on mortality. The study says that low-carbohydrate dietary patterns favouring animal-derived protein and fat sources, from sources such as lamb, beef, pork, and chicken, were associated with higher mortality, whereas those that favoured plant-derived protein and fat intake, from sources such as vegetables, nuts, peanut butter, and whole-grain breads, were associated with lower mortality, suggesting that the source of food notably modifies the association between carbohydrate intake and mortality.
EAT YOUR VEGGIES!
At this harvest time, there’s nothing like visiting a local farmers’ market to pick up some homegrown vegetables. Roasted, steamed, or added to a favourite casserole, vegetables should be an essential part of every meal. Most vegetables are naturally low in fat and calories. None have cholesterol. They are also important sources of vitamins and minerals including potassium, fibre and folic acid. Diets rich in potassium may help to maintain healthy blood pressure. Vegetable sources of potassium include sweet potatoes, white potatoes, white beans, tomato products (paste, sauce, and juice), beet greens, soybeans, lima beans, spinach, lentils, and kidney beans. Fibre is important for proper bowel function. It helps reduce constipation and diverticulosis. As well, foods containing fibre such as vegetables help provide a feeling of fullness with fewer calories. Folic acid helps the body form red blood cells. Vitamin A keeps eyes and skin healthy and helps to protect against infections. Vitamin C helps heal cuts and wounds and keeps teeth and gums healthy. Vitamin C also helps with absorption of iron. Eating your vegetables and fruits, as part of your overall healthy diet, may reduce risk for heart disease, stroke and other diseases.

SUMMER OUTREACH PILOT
Submitted by Heather Kirby
If it takes a village to raise a child, a town can also come together to help feed kids through the summer months. This is what’s happened in Lindsay this year, where an innovative Summer Outreach Lunch Program pilot, was launched, providing healthy bagged lunches to children. The Lindsay Salvation Army, Kawartha Lakes Food Source, Haliburton Kawartha Pine Ridge District Health Unit and Kawartha Lakes Food Coalition partnered together to design this lunch program. In total, 31 volunteers contributed over 515 hours in training, baking, preparing and distributing the lunches. Organizers were overwhelmed by the volunteers’ energy and desire to help.
ASPIRING MUSICIANS NEED APPLY
There’s an incredible opportunity for musicians of all skill levels and ages. A professional musician and performer, Steve McCullough has rebranded and relaunched his music teaching facility as Musicians Performance Centre or MPC. In addition to offering music lessons, they are also providing instruction in performance and songwriting. “This is in response to what my students told me they needed to learn,” says Steve. “It’s not just about the ability to play, but also how to write the songs and perform on stage. We nurture confidence in presentation and choreography with lessons in performance while encouraging creativity and open their ears with songwriting.” MPC is the only teaching facility to offer this in the area and Steve hopes to help the next generation of artists take their talent all the way. Through his contacts with local musical venues and festivals, Steve is able to put his students in front of an audience, giving them
“It was very important to us that the lunches were healthy providing optimal nutrition” says Aisha Malik, registered dietitian. Over the course of the summer, 1,384 lunches were made: 832 were distributed to children at the locations and the remaining lunches were provided to A Place Called Home. This outreach program would not have been such a success without the support of the community. A big thank you to the following for their contributions: St. Vincent de Paul, OPP Auxiliary, Community Living, Home Hardware (Kent Street), Kawartha Wholesale Bakery, St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church (Mary Martha’s Group), the United Way of Kawartha Lakes, Curves/Jenny Craig and the many individuals who donated directly to this program.
even more experience. Musicians Performance Centre is supported by the Eastern Ontario Development Program (EODP) which advances economic development in rural eastern Ontario. Through EODP, the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario (FedDev Ontario) is collaborating with Kawartha Lakes Community Futures Development Corporation (KLCFDC) to promote the growth of new and existing businesses in rural communities. RAISING FUNDS FOR WOMEN AND GIRLS
Submitted by Susan Peirce
The Snowflake Gala is the signature fundraising event of Soroptimist International of Kawartha Lakes. On Thursday, November 1, the 7th annual gala will be held at Celebrations, 35 Lindsay St. N., Lindsay. The evening consists of a delicious buffet meal as well as silent and live auctions with world champion benefit auctioneers, mother and daughter team, Barb and Krista Richards. This year, funds will be directed toward the GOAL program. Girls Of Action & Leadership has been developed and run by SIKL members for the past 3 years in partnership with local principals, teachers and parent volunteers at King Albert and Queen Victoria Public Schools in Lindsay, and this past spring at Langton Public School in Fenelon Falls. The program is for girls in grades 4 to 6, consisting
of a 10-week motivational, interactive program that empowers them to realize their potential and overcome adversity, while participating in group and running activities. This spring, 52 girls participated in the program. Other programs are held throughout the year, with the majority of support coming from the proceeds of the Snowflake Gala, thanks to businesses and individuals in our communities. Tickets to the Snowflake Gala are $60 per person and are available until October 23 by calling Nancy at 705-324-3980. More details are available at www. sikawarthalakes.org. Anyone interested in helping to improve the lives of women and girls can check out www.sikawarthalakes. org or email info@sikawarthalakes.org.
BUCKHORN’S LOCK IS THE BUSIEST
The figures for 2018 vessel traffic through the Trent-Severn Waterway System are in (at least from the May opening to the end of September) and numbers don’t lie! Lock 31 in Buckhorn was the busiest in Ontario, compared to 2016 figures, which officials say is more indicative of a ‘normal’ lockage year. Parks Canada officials say that they have begun lowering water levels on lakes north near Haliburton to prepare for winter snow and runoff. That will result in lower water levels along the system over the next couple of weeks.

COMMUNITIES IN BLOOM ACCOLADES
Submitted by Lynda Rotteau
Bobcaygeon received a rating of 4 Blooms and a special mention for Community Involvement from Communities in Bloom Ontario. Bobcaygeon also received Criteria Awards for: Environmental, which was sponsored by Scott’s Canada; and Floral, which was sponsored by Home Hardware. In July and August, trained volunteer judges Kathy Smyth and Joyce Nieuwkoop travelled to Bobcaygeon to evaluate the overall contributions of municipal council and departments; industry; businesses and the private sector – including volunteer efforts – in regards
to the following criteria: Tidiness, Environmental Action, Heritage Conservation, Urban Forestry & Trails, Landscape and Floral Displays. Communities in Bloom is a Canadian non-profit organization committed to fostering civic pride, environmental responsibility and beautification through community involvement and the challenge of a provincial and national program, with focus on the enhancement of green spaces. The pride, sense of community and feeling of accomplishment generated through participation are visible in communities across Canada. Congratulations to all the volunteers and organizers for putting Bobcaygeon on a very good map!
