OVER THE BACK FENCE
It’s hard to believe we’re on the back end of the summer already. It seemed to take so long to get here and then, poof, it’s over. While that means that many seasonal residents head back to their city lives and children head back to school, our communities don’t slow down. September brings Fall Fairs; local farmers’ markets focus on fall fruits and veggies; and fundraising events continue for the Legion, Lions and other community groups. It’s my favourite time of year when I know that tickets for the Fall Dinner Theatre at the Buckhorn Community Centre go on sale (September 27). That puts me and my theatre friends back into rehearsals, getting ready to entertain guests for six nights in November. I would have to say it’s one of my happy places. Here at The Kawartha Promoter, we’ll be gearing up for the Federal Election on October 21. Our next three papers will offer some insights into the

issues and, of course, the candidates. Our team will also begin sales for the 2020 Explore Tourist Guides for Bobcaygeon, Buckhorn, Fenelon Falls and Coboconk/Norland. Your business could benefit from exposure to visitors from all over southern Ontario, so give us a call to book your ad space. We also want to include your event in the listings, so email information to us at editor@thepromoter.ca. Our photo contest is on as well for the Explore guides. If you’ve taken some cool spring, summer, fall or winter shots, email a high-resolution jpg to art@thepromoter.ca. You could win a cool prize and have your photo included in the guide. editor@thepromoter.ca

Good Stories from Curve Lake First Nation
The Log-Roller’s Wife
As told by Doug Williams to Julie Kapyrka
I used to visit a lot of people’s houses with my grandmother when I was young. We spent a lot of time visiting with community members. This was our way. This is how news travelled, how information was shared, how relationships were nurtured. So this person I used to visit with my grandmother was slightly older than her and always seemed to give my grandmother a lot of advice about many things including housekeeping and relationships and so on. She had an interesting husband who prided himself as an acrobat – he would do unusual things. He would ride his horse bareback and one of his tricks was to go under the horse and come up the other side and continue to ride it bareback while the horse was trotting along. He also was a lumberjack. He was one of the better log-rollers, by that I mean who jumped on logs in the water and rolled them and played with them. He was very dexterous that way. One interesting story that was told by this older woman to my grandmother was that her husband used to take a log on the north shore of Chemong Lake and take it across and leave it over there, and run to Peterborough to do shopping. He’d run back and he’d have food on his back in a pack. He’d get back on the log and come back to Curve Lake. And
the older woman would laugh and say: “And he had a canoe!” But the old guy would do this just for practice. She said that one time he was in Peterborough, and he’d come home and I think what happened is he must have fallen off the log quite a number of times because by the time he got in the house, he was all wet! And she said to him, “What happened?” And he said, “Oh no, it was raining on the other side of the lake!” And she said, “Hmph, you are pulling my leg!” That’s the kind of story that I remember as a young man listening. What I also remember is the amazing garden that she had, where she grew vegetables in and around the house -- just amazing food. And I also remember the soothing personality she had. My grandmother and this lady would talk about relationships and so on. And I think that by supporting each other they were really stable. I realize today how much of an important activity this was when I was a kid – and that is visiting, houseto-house, and sharing information, and supporting each other. We don’t do that much today and I think it’s a big loss that it has disappeared. I don’t know how to retrieve this kind of thing but it’s like other things in our community -- we are losing our language, we are losing our visiting habits we are losing traditional food, etc. There is much work to do to recover…but that is another story.

PROMOTING KITCHEN SAFETY
The Kawartha Lakes Fire Rescue Service has received a grant from the Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation of Canada for $8,972.20 to go towards a Fire Hazard Kitchen Simulator. The Kitchen Simulator is a portable teaching aid that simulates a life-size stovetop and countertop with realistic effects. Alana Erwood, Fire Prevention Inspector and Public Educator at Kawartha Lakes Fire Rescue says, “Stove top fires account for 71% of all cooking related fires. The Simulator is a great way to show youth and other groups how to stay safe while cooking.” “The Simulator will help our Fire Prevention Division teach high-risk groups such as youth and seniors how to prevent cooking fires,” adds Fire Chief Mark Pankhurst. Millions of students across Canada take part in activities to support the Terry Fox School Run every year raising funds for cancer research, making it one of the largest fundraising events in Canadian history. Schools throughout our area will take part in one way or another to help make Terry’s dream of a cancer cure a reality in our lifetime.

COMMUNITY GARDEN HITS HUGE MILESTONE
United Way for the City of Kawartha Lakes is excited to announce that its newest endeavour in food security work is paying off in a big way – 1,046 pounds worth, to be exact. Edwin Binney’s Community Garden is the name of the new endeavour: it is 30,000 square feet of Crayola Canada’s previously unused land that United Way and Fleming College staff have developed into a fully operational community garden. The garden is maintained by staff from both United Way for the City of Kawartha Lakes and Fleming College’s Sustainable Agriculture program, as well as several volunteers from Crayola Canada, Farm Credit Canada, and the community. In just two months since its Grand Opening, staff and volunteers at Edwin Binney’s Community Garden have: planted and maintained 30,000 square feet of land plus 24 colourful raised garden beds; set up an innovative and sustainable irrigation system; hosted educational workshops for kids ranging from 3 to 17 years old; and harvested and donated 1,046 pounds of fresh vegetables to local agencies such as food banks, shelters, the Good Food Box, and kids programming agencies. “This is a huge milestone for us,” said Elly Millington, Projects and Communications Coordinator at United Way for the City of Kawartha Lakes. “The excitement doesn’t end here for us this summer; we are only just getting started with the harvest and are putting out a call for more volunteers to help with our first annual fall harvest.” Anyone interested in volunteering should contact the United Way for the City of Kawartha Lakes office at 705-878-5081 or visit www.ckl-unitedway.ca.

Aquarius (Jan. 21 to Feb. 19) Over-thinking is usually NOT a good idea, Aquarius. It does not solve the problem. It only leads to worry and stress about possible (often unlikely) scenarios. So, knock it off! Pisces (Feb. 20 to March 20) Forgive your parents! They did not mean to harm you – they may have lacked certain skills that made things difficult, for you and for them. It’s time for compassion for all of you, Pisces. Aries (March 21 to April 20) Embrace self-discipline, Aries. It is often overlooked when searching for ways to move forward. It does not have to be completely restraining, but a firm and purposeful tone will lead to constructive outcomes. Taurus (April 21 to May 21) “I need to listen well so that I hear what is not said.” Thuli Madonsela. Wise words to follow, Taurus. Listen well. Gemini (May 22 to June 22) Don’t get hooked on youth – or, we should say, don’t try to always be youthful, Gemini. Realize that maturity is a gift that offers the chance to do new things, and develop yourself in your very own special way.

Cancer (June 23 to July 23) September is the perfect time to start afresh, Cancer. Whether you’re in school or long out, it is always a time of new beginnings. So, what are you waiting for? Go out and rock the world! Leo (July 24 to Aug. 23) We sense some anxiousness in your state of mind, dear Leo. We could say that all will be well – but it is YOU that must trust yourself. Go forward! Virgo (Aug. 24 to Sept. 23) Please don’t go chasing after an unattainable love at this point, Virgo. Stay loyal to the love you have, and cherish it for what it is – a bond between you and your significant other that is not easily broken. Libra (Sept. 24 to Oct. 23) Be careful! Don’t let your skepticism slip, especially where finances are concerned, Libra. During this phase, there may be people trying to scam you. Don’t fall for it. Scorpio (Oct. 24 to Nov. 22) Exercise your love! What does this mean? It means don’t take your loved one for granted. Treat them like you did at the beginning of your courtship. Do something special for them, without being asked. The list is endless. Sagittarius (Nov. 23 to Dec. 21) The autumn season is looking very positive for you, Sagittarius, with new opportunities and growth. Take what you have learned this summer and use it well. Capricorn (Dec. 22 to Jan. 20) Slow down! You are at risk of over-burdening yourself with too many causes and too many duties – most for other people’s benefit. Please rest!

lets talk about your insurance sponsored by Stewart Morrison Insurance
New DIStracteD DrIvINg LawS & Your INSuraNce
Did you know that distracted driving is now the number one cause of fatal accidents on Canadian highways? This is why on August 1st 2019, Ontario increased penalties in hopes of saving Ontarian’s lives. • First offence: 3 days suspension, a $3000 fine and 3 demerit points • Second offence: 7 days suspension, a $5000 fine and 6 demerit points • Three or more offences: 30 day suspension, a $10,000 fine and 6 demerit points what this means for your Insurance In light of these changes, many insurance companies are now following suit and have amended the severity of the conviction for a distracted driving offence from a minor to a major conviction. What this means for you and your insurance? After one major conviction you may face a substantial increase in premiums or you may only qualify for a high risk market. what constitutes distracted driving? ontario.ca states that: It is illegal to (including when you are stopped in traffic or at a red light): • use a phone or other hand-held wireless communication device to text or dial – you can only touch a device to call 911 in an emergency • use a hand-held electronic entertainment device, such as a tablet or portable gaming console • view display screens unrelated to driving, such as watching a video • program a GPS device, except by voice commands You are allowed to use hands-free wireless communications devices with an earpiece, lapel button or Bluetooth. You can view GPS display screens as long as they are built into your vehicle’s dashboard or securely mounted on the dashboard. But it is important to know that even holding a phone, is illegal. MUSIC COUNCIL NOTES
By April Scott
After a very successful season of Music In The Park, the Council wound everything up with a barbecue to which volunteers were also invited. The weather was perfect and a good time was had by all. Members of the Council were relieved to learn that the pilot (Bill Fry) of the float plane which crashed last week, was unharmed and actually walked away from the crash. The only downside was that he lost his plane. We are taking a break and then will focus on the Music Alive programs. Ken Lavigne will be returning in November with a brand new and exciting show. Stay tuned for a lot more information on this in a few weeks. The Council hopes that you are following our activities on our Facebook page and enjoying them. Short and sweet this week. We hope you enjoy the fall that is coming and that the colours live up to your expectations.

Health & Wellness SUPPORTING HEART HEALTH
Submitted by Kim Coulter
In the fall and again this summer, customers at Valu-mart were given the opportunity to support cardiac services at Ross Memorial Hospital while they checked out their groceries. Recently, Valu-mart owner Mark Reid presented Erin Coons, Foundation CEO, with a cheque for $801—the proceeds from the contributions that were collected between June 30 and July 13. With this gift, the contributions from Lindsay’s Valu-mart staff and customers for cardiac services since 2016 totals $4,385.40.

HOPING TO MAKE CANCER AN ELECTION ISSUE
By Kirk Winter
Nuala McKee, Manager of Public Engagement and Advocacy Communications for the Canadian Cancer Society, wants to make cancer and cancer care a key issue in the upcoming fall federal election. The Society wants politicians to realize that 1 in 2 Canadians will be diagnosed with cancer sometime in their life. By 2030, the number of cancer patients in Canada will be 40 percent higher than it is today because of our aging population, and that the rising number of cancer cases, “could overwhelm the health care system.” In 2018, 200,000 Canadians were diagnosed with cancer. Cancer of all kinds kills more Canadians than any other cause, and last year 45,000 Canadians lost their courageous battles with cancer. McKee said there are three key commitments that the Society is looking for from all the federal leaders and these include: 1. Extended Employment Insurance Sickness Benefits: The Society is looking for benefits to be increased from 15 weeks to 26 weeks to allow people going through treatment to have the same amount of time off as those who are caring for them. 2. Hold Big Tobacco Accountable: The Society wants an additional $66 million in taxes collected from the cigarette manufacturers to cover the cost of programs to reduce tobacco use.
3. Close Gaps in Coverage: The Society wants all Canadians to be completely covered for take-home cancer drugs so that everyone has equal access to these medications, enabling them to undergo treatment in the comfort of their homes. The ultimate goal of the CCS is, “to stop cancer before it starts, provide support for patients and their families and better manage the long term effects of cancer.” The Society hopes that Canadians ask canvassing politicians where they stand on the extension of cancer treatments and benefits in Canada. If they don’t have an answer, demand they come up with one, or you may be looking for someone else tin whom to place your trust. The CCS hopes you will help them make cancer a priority for all the federal parties this election cycle, and believes that this is the beginning of a new way of looking at cancer and politics in the Canadian context. The real winners will be the patients and their extended families.

Earwax, far from having no purpose, prevents dust and dirt from damaging the eardrum and keeps bacteria and fungi from forming in the ear canal. However, too much earwax can cause problems such as hearing loss, dizziness, tinnitus (ringing in the ear), and ear pain. The most common cause of earwax build-up and blockages is, ironically, the misuse of cotton swabs. When used to “clean” the ear canal, cotton swabs do not remove earwax. Rather, they push it deeper. A normal, healthy ear is self-cleaning, though people using hearing aids or ear plugs on a regular basis may want to keep an eye on build up and speak with their doctor if any ill effects occur. Use cotton swabs only on the outside of the ear. If you have a severe enough problem with ear wax that you need to have it removed by a health professional more than once a year, discuss with them which method of prevention may work best for you. Your health care provider can look into your ears with a special instrument, called an otoscope, to see if ear wax buildup is present. LINDSAY EAR CLINIC offers a full range of services including earwax removal, complete hearing assessments, hearing aid sales and service, batteries, and dizziness and balance treatments. Please call us today for a comprehensive hearing evaluation by a Doctor of Audiology. PP.S. Earwax is self-cleaning and usually falls or flakes out of the ear on its own.

ARTISTIC EXPRESSIONS IN WOOD
By Doug Hodgins
Wood sculpturing is a sophisticated art form. Basswood, butternut, cedar, pine, maple and cherry are just some of the preferred woods found locally. To shape the wood, artists use specialized knives, chisels and power tools. Some creations are painted while others maintain a natural finish. Regardless, each piece is unique. Members of carving clubs from all across Ontario will gather on Saturday, September 14 for the annual Kawartha Carving Competition at the Bobcaygeon Curling Club. The event is truly community-based, made possible by the support from more than 60 individuals and businesses, many of whom are local. Everyone is welcome to attend the event, get up close to the creations, watch carving demonstrations or purchase a wood sculpture to take home. The carvers will compete in judged events for cash awards, prize ribbons or just satisfaction and bragging rights. It is amazing to watch diverse artists, from rookies to world champions, participate and exchange ideas. For many carvers, this is a very satisfying hobby that they can do year-round. Some carve or teach professionally and compete at very high levels throughout North America for prize money as high as five-figures. Mostly, though, it is the joy of spending time each week with like-minded folks in one of the many carving clubs either here in the Kawarthas or elsewhere.

EARLYON ACTIVITIES FOR THE KIDDOS
By Deb Crossen
I stopped by the Bobcaygeon Legion Branch 239 a few weeks ago to drop off some stuff for their yard sale and was surprised to find a friend of mine surrounded by a group of small children. Marda Drew works with the EarlyON Child and Family Centre, an organization that offers a range of services and resources to parents, caregivers and their children aged 0 to 6 years of age. This particular program is a drop-in that takes place throughout the area all year. There are quite a few programs that take place in the City of Kawartha Lakes including the Drop-in at Legion branches and libraries. Parents and caregivers can also take advantage of advice from professionals trained in early childhood development and other family services in the community. These drop-ins are also a great place to connect with other families with young children. Many centres are open weekdays, evenings and weekends to fit the needs of families in their communities. Check out the website, www.ontario.ca/EarlyON for more information about programming near you.

SENIORS PLAY PARK OPENS
Seniors in Fenelon Falls can now come out to play in the new Seniors Play Park at the Lloyd Kelly Parkette. The City of Kawartha Lakes Family Health Team was able to obtain a $121,600 Capital grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation along with other local donations, to create one of the first Seniors Play Parks in Canada. The free park is an accessible recreation space that promotes exercise and an active lifestyle for older residents. The municipality acknowledges the vital involvement of all partners and organizations who came together to make this project possible: the Ontario Trillium Foundation, Ormell Sand and Gravel Ltd, Young’s Construction, Kevin Stybosch of Hoek Van Holland Landscaping, the Fenelon Falls Home Hardware and Chris Handley of Handley Lumber and Building Supplies. There were also a number of individuals involved with this project and officials thanked each person for their help in making this a true community activity. Deputy Mayor Doug Elmslie said, “The Seniors
Play Park is the first of its kind, and we are proud that Kawartha Lakes is supporting our older residents in staying active and engaged in their community.” With action stations that foster mobility and agility, the Seniors Play Park is an opportunity for residents to come together and stay active while being social in their community. The Park has a rubber ground surface, made of 2,000 recycled car tires, which is a non-slip and eco-friendly surface that the groups involved thought would be a welcome feature. The Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF) is an agency of the Government of Ontario, and one of Canada’s leading granting foundations. OTF awarded $108 million to 629 projects last year to build healthy and vibrant communities.
FOOD BANKS A NECESSITY
On July 24, Feed Ontario released a new study revealing hunger and food bank use rates across every electoral riding in Ontario. In partnership with Fleming College’s Geographic Information Systems program, they have created an interactive map that allows users to compare provincial electoral ridings, including information on Food Bank use, mean and median income, and housing. The first of its kind in Ontario, the map is intended to inform policy makers and elected officials that hunger exists in every electoral riding, and to encourage the development of long-term, evidencebased solutions that address hunger and poverty in the communities they serve. In 2018, the study found that our riding, Haliburton-Kawartha Lakes-Brock, had 3,978 people visit a food bank out of a population of 113,960. Of those, 34 percent are children, which is 1 percent above the provincial average. The Kawartha Lakes Food Source stands with the following recommendations made by Feed Ontario. First, preserve and improve social assistance programming by retaining the current definition of ‘disability’, reduce the claw backs on earned income under OW and ODSP to 50 percent, and pass Bill 60 to set social assistance rates and policies based on evidence. Secondly, invest in affordable housing by repairing current units and building new ones. Lastly, create secure employment, improve economic opportunities, and implement policies to ensure that Ontarians have access to safe, secure, and well-paying jobs.

VOLUNTEERS TO BE RECOGNIZED
The Kawartha Lakes Sport and Recreation Council (KLSRC) knows how much volunteers contribute to the sport and recreation community in Kawartha Lakes. Think of that favourite coach who helped build your confidence, the always-reliable volunteer willing to take on any task or the behind-the-scenes board members who keep organizations viable and progressive. Tell us about those individuals by nominating them for a Volunteer of the Year Award so they can be recognized on November 6 at KLSRC’s 5th Annual Volunteer Recognition Dinner at the Lindsay Golf and Country Club. Nomination categories include coach/trainer, board/organizational volunteer, and active recreation/ community volunteer. There will also be a Volunteer Organization of the Year category. The 2018 award winners were: Volunteer - Ivan Goodhand, Allyssa Adams, and Stephen Hayma; Organization – Optimist Club of Lindsay. While the event serves to bring awareness to and provide recognition of the hard work, time, and energy that volunteers contribute, it also provides an

opportunity to focus on a particular benefit of sport and recreation within the community. This year, the theme of the evening is Sport and Recreation Across the Lifespan – to reflect the importance of staying active at all ages, and to highlight the KLSRC partners who support CKL residents to do so. KLSRC members will provide updates of key projects from this past year, communicate their direction for the next 12 months, and highlight the KLSRC Supporter and Membership programs that offer options to join in with KLSRC to help create a community that is active for life. To nominate an individual for Volunteer of the Year or a sport and recreation provider for Volunteer Organization of the Year, or to learn more about the KLSRC, please contact Coordinator Dennis Geelen at dgeelen@klsrc.ca. Deadline for nominations is September 30, 2019.
LEADING THE WAY FOR BUS SAFETY
By Deb Crossen
Recently in P.E.I., the legislature passed a law that would see drivers who illegally pass a school bus lose their licence for a time. Previously, the punishment was typically a fine of $1,000 and eight demerit points, with a maximum fine of $5,000. Those fines were already the highest in the country, according to a document tabled in P.E.I. last November. The next highest, of up to $2,400 were in Nova Scotia. In Ontario, second offences would lead to a $4,000 fine and possible jail time. Every school day in Ontario, according to the Ministry of Transportation, 824,000 students travel in almost 16,000 school vehicles. There are no statistics available for the number of drivers who have been charged with failing to stop for a school bus, but every year it seems we’re hearing about more of them. To get their license back in P.E.I., drivers will need to meet with highway safety officials, pay a $100 reinstatement fee and take a defensive driving course within six months of getting their licence back.
