A Fine Festival
We attended the Bobcaygeon Craft Beer and Food Festival and had a great time. There were so many choices for beer samples and food options. We enjoyed each beer and the Waipoos Cider was a nice finishing sample. It was well organized and prices were reasonable. Kudos to the organizers of this event. New Economic Development Strategy
The City of Kawartha Lakes Economic Development division has delivered a new Economic Development Strategy that focuses on creating a vibrant and growing economy. Council identified the creation of an Economic Development Strategy as one of the top 10 priority projects in the Corporate Strategic Plan for 2016-2019. “The strategy has been developed with input from local business owners, business groups, Chambers of Commerce and government partners,” explains Denise Williams, Manager of Economic Development. “We have a City-wide focus and are working towards several specific goals including welcoming new businesses and retaining and expanding existing businesses with a goal to create jobs.” The strategy outlines steps that will be taken to develop growth in the agriculture and food, culture, tourism, specialized manufacturing and engineering products and related services business sectors. Council will receive regular progress updates as the strategy is rolled out. The strategy is available online at www. kawarthalakes.ca/ecdevstrategy.

For 35 years Judy Currins has served our community as a municipal clerk, election’s officer, communications/research coordinator and a true professional with an incredible wealth of knowledge. She began her municipal career in Omemee in 1982 in an entry level position and in two short years she rose to the position of Clerk Treasurer. Judy continued this role until the amalgamation of the city in 2000, becoming the Clerk in 2002 and serving for 15 years in that position.

I first met Judy while serving on Verulam Council in the early ‘90s and then joining her as member of the County Recycling Committee. During this time I was very impressed with Judy’s abilities and her even tempered manner. I have had the honour of working with her on many projects over the years. I asked Judy to share some of the highlights of her career and she said the following, ”Some advice I received early on - never think you know everything no one can - just know where to find the answer.” She continued by telling about the formation of the Victoria Recycling Association and how it was very exciting and fulfilling. Judy said “Reeve Ken Logan of Omemee called me while I was on maternity leave to ask me if I would be interested in helping him get it going. I jumped at the chance and we worked with a great group to get recycling started in the rural areas.” “I really enjoyed meeting and working with the many people who share the municipal government passion - both elected and staffers,” she said. “Helping people understand the municipal process and the satisfaction when issues were resolved made my time as clerk most rewarding.” She humbly summarized by saying, “I really lead a simple life - I just work, try to treat others as I wish to be treated and try to see the positive.” Judy made our community run smoothly even during challenging times. I know she is respected by all who have met or worked with her. When people say that a retiring colleague will be hard to replace, well, in Judy’s case, it definitively will be. Happy trails, Judy.

Thanks to the 60 artists who purchased tickets and created masterpieces. Thanks also to the incredible volunteers who organized and assisted at the fundraiser. Construction has begun on the new Bethany Fire Hall, expected to be fully operational by Spring 2018. “The new fire hall allows us to operate more efficiently while still providing residents with the same high level of service they have always received,” explains Fire Chief Mark Pankhurst. “Resident safety is always our top priority.” Located at 88 Ski Hill Road in Bethany, the new hall will service the Bethany area and replace the existing fire hall located on Highway 7A. The new hall will be larger and less expensive to operate than the existing hall, and will allow firefighters to train without interrupting traffic on Highway 7A.

There are two words that strike fear into students and their parents every school yearAccommodation Review. With people having fewer children, enrolment at many schools is down, leaving school boards scrambling, looking for ways to reduce costs or increase revenue. The latter is a tough thing to do for school boards as they get funding from the Ontario Government based on the number of students in each school. So, one of the only options available to schools and their boards is to reduce costs. They do this by “Accommodation Review”. They look at each school’s enrolment numbers and decide if the school is “viable”. The entire process is stressful and can be heartbreaking for the kids and their families. My daughter was in the Arts Program at PCVS in Peterborough when it came up for review. We put our hearts and souls into saving that school but it was not to be. The night the announcement was made the students broke down and cried. My old public school in Burnt River closed due to low enrolment after a huge fight to keep it open. It seems to be happening more and more often. Lady Eaton Elementary School in Omemee has been slated for closure in the 2018/2019 school year after a review done there. Our Lady of Mercy Elementary School in the Simcoe Muskoka Catholic School Board closed in June after an accommodation review. The good news here is the sound of children laughing and learning will fill the school once again in September. Trillium Lakelands District School Board and Simcoe Muskoka Catholic District School Board recently announced they worked together to make it possible for Honey Harbour Public School to relocate to the former Our Lady of Mercy Elementary School in Honey Harbour. The move will give students at Honey Harbour enhanced programming including room for additional classrooms, a gymnasium, and a library. This is a win for both school boards and their students. Hopefully we will see more of this in the future. It’s always sad to see a school close, but when people work together for the common good, we all win. DOORS OPEN IN BOBCAYGEON

Christ Church Anglican in Bobcaygeon is participating in the “Doors Open Ontario” tour and will be open two days for this event. Guides in period costume will show visitors around the church and tell the history of our stained glass windows. The beautiful “Ploughman Window” (pictured) will be featured in the tour. On Saturday, September 9, we will be open from 10am to 4pm. There’s a Tea Room, homemade baked goods, and craft and jewellery items for sale as well as a Silent Auction. On Sunday, September 10 there will be a church service from the 1800’s at 11am followed by a soup and roll lunch and a special cake to celebrate Canada’s 150. The cost of lunch is $5 per person. The Church will be open to visitors until 3pm. Come to celebrate Canada’s 150th Birthday with us at 43 Sherwood Street in Bobcaygeon.

It’s the Kawarthas. It’s Outdoors. There are Adventures. It will be a Weekend - September 16 and
17 in Buckhorn. It’s going to be an exciting weekend in the hamlet, especially if you like the great outdoors. The Buckhorn District Tourist Association presents a number of events that weekend, including the 2017 FLW Canada Bass Fishing Canadian Championships, family activities and Kids’ Fishing Derby on Saturday, September 16 at Scotsman Point Resort. On Sunday, September 17 from noon to 5pm at the Buckhorn Community Centre, numerous activities will take place. There will be a “market” with cottage and outdoor vendors, featuring a demonstration by Meaghan Wood, owner of Handsome Jack’s Fly Fishing Outfitters. Other activities include games for the kids, a variety show and a food and beer garden. Enter a draw to win a Buckhorn Sporting Package, then stick around and watch the weigh-in for the 2017 FLW Canada Bass Fishing Canadian Champion at 3pm. QUILTS AS ART
When I went to my first quilt show years ago, I was expecting to see a few handmade blankets similar to those in my grandmother’s house. Boy was I wrong! The quilts of today are works of art, functional works of art, but colourful, lovingly prepared works of art. The Settlers’ Village Quilters Quilt Guild is hosting their bi-annual show and sale at the Bobcaygeon Curling Club on Saturday, September 16 and Sunday, September 17. Harvest of Quilts raises funds to help offset the ongoing operational expenses of their meeting location, the Wray House at Settlers’ Village. As a result, they are able to continue their support of outreach programs, including Duggie Snugglers for children involved in a traumatic situation or to mothers, newborns and young children in women’s shelters. As a guild, they participate in Victoria Quilts of Canada, providing quilts to cancer patients; and Quilts of Valour, creating beautiful quilts to comfort past and present Canadian Forces members. In addition the Guild supports the Bobcaygeon Food Bank and the Womens’ Resource Centre in Lindsay. Harvest of Quilts will feature displays of quilts, demonstrations, and a merchants’ mall that includes an array of projects, ideas, fabric and tools. You can visit the Lindsay Victoria’s Quilts Tea Room to grab some refreshments, and check out the Toonie Draw. Harvest of Quilts runs from 10am to 5pm on Saturday and 10am to 4pm on Sunday. Admission is $5 per person.

green that, natural, and eco are plastered on a lot of products and services these days, but what does it really mean? How do I know who is telling the truth or who is cashing in on the new popularity of naturalizing our lives, and reducing our impact on the environment? If I was to hire a service that had eco claims, I would simply ask these questions -- Why are you eco? What do you do that is eco? What products do you use that are eco? Do you have specialized knowledge of eco products? Some companies might just use the word ‘green’ in their name because they like the colour! I have been duped before on personal care products, and if you’re not ready to DIY or switch to plain old coconut oil and baking soda for everything like I did, a great tool is the Environmental Working Group’s (EWG) website or Think Dirty App. EWG is a non-profit organization made up of scientists, lawyers, and policy experts dedicated to educating and empowering consumers to make safer and more informed decisions about the products they buy. Their website and app offer ratings for over 80,000 products based on the latest research on the ingredients that are listed in products. Although an American agency, you are likely to find the product you’re considering in their database. Environmental Defense is their Canadian counterpart. In most cases I’m willing to spend more for a product or service that offers a benefit, or at least does not harm the environment. If I’m paying more, you bet I want to get the environmental benefit I’m paying for.

PARK CLOSING FOR CONSTRUCTION
The Fenelon Falls Rotary Club is pleased to announce that the construction of the long-awaited Splash Pad will start on September 5. As a result of the work, a portion of Garnet Graham Park and trails located inside the park will be closed. “We had hoped to have the Splash Pad operating by July 1 but the weather and permit requirements pushed this date back,” explained Jim Sackston, Rotary Club Team Leader. The Rotary Club wants to thank all those who have donated funds, as well City of Kawartha Lakes, Parks and Recreation staff who have worked diligently on the project. Fundraising efforts continue as more funds are required as a result of the redesign. The City said the park and trails are expected to reopen on October 9.

Happy 50th Birthday

Although not as old as Canada, Fenelon Township Public School is celebrating, too. A birthday of this importance deserves a party, and the organizing committee of 15 staff, parents and alumni led by Katherine Staples are hard at it to celebrate the school’s 50th anniversary. All are welcome to join Fenelon Township Public School on Saturday, September 30 from 1 to 4 pm at 50 Cameron Rd. in Cameron. The current school opened in October of 1967, replacing a classic two-room schoolhouse less than half a kilometre away. The school has since become an anchor for the community, providing a high-quality educational experience for at least two generations of children in an area bounded by Pleasant View Trailer Park in the south, Rosedale in the north, Fenelon Falls in the east and the MariposaEldon Township line in the west. Staples and her group will be hosting an open house that day, featuring displays of artifacts going back to the school’s opening 50 years ago. There will be activities for the children, merchandise for sale, as well as cake and ice cream. A teacher-led band called “Live on the Line” will perform. Organizers are hoping for a great turn out that day. The “Fenelon Township’s 50th Anniversary” Facebook site with celebration information details already has more than 200 followers. The highlight of the day will be the excavation and opening of a time capsule that was buried in the front yard of the school to celebrate the school’s 25th anniversary in 1992. The motto of this pretty little school of 145 is “Friends Together Pursuing Success”. There is certainly a hope that the many friends of Fenelon Township Public School will find time to gather, reminisce and celebrate the difference that the school has made in their lives, and in the community of Cameron.

Artistic Expressions in Wood

Did you know that this year is the 40th anniversary of a wood carving show and competition? It originated in Two Deer by Bob Gill of the Buckhorn as part of Buckhorn Carving Club the then Buckhorn Wildlife Art Festival. About eight years ago, it moved to Bobcaygeon as the Kawartha Carving Competition. The event is hosted by four clubs - the Caygeon Carvers, Buckhorn Carving Club, Peterborough and District Wood Carvers and Lindsay Wood Carvers and Fine Arts Club. It truly is a community based event. It is only made possible by the tremendous support that we receive from local individuals businesses. Wood sculpturing is a sophisticated art-form enjoyed by thousands of men, women and children. Basswood, butternut, cedar, pine, and cherry are just some of the preferred woods found locally. Specialized knives, chisels and power tools are used to shape the wood. While some creations are painted, others are left with a natural finish. Regardless, the results are nothing short of amazing. Most carvers enjoy this as just a very satisfying hobby. Others carve or teach professionally and compete at very high levels throughout North America for as high as five figure prize money. Mostly, it is the joy of spending some time each week with likeminded folks in one of the many carving clubs, here in the Kawarthas or elsewhere. Each year, wood carvers from all across Ontario converge on Bobcaygeon to participate in the Kawartha Carving Competition and Show. Here, they compete in judged events for cash awards, prize ribbons or just satisfaction and bragging rights. Bobcaygeon’s Terry Fox Run

Welcome again to Bobcaygeon’s Terry Fox Run on Sunday, September 17, 2017. The event’s start and finish lines will be at the Retirement Suites of Kawartha Lakes, 60 West Street. Registration begins at 12 noon and our Terry Fox Run takes place between 1pm and 4pm. Everyone is welcome to participate in a Terry Fox Run regardless of age or athletic ability. • Walk, run, ride, roller blade, use a scooter or wheelchair along the 2, 5 or 10 kilometre routes. • The Run is non-competitive. Go at your own pace. • This is a great family event and all are welcome. • Start or join a team consisting of family members, friends, co-workers, neighbourhoods or community organizations. • While the Terry Fox Run does not have an entry fee or minimum donation, we do ask all participants to fund raise or make a donation. You can raise funds online (terryfox.org), use a pledge sheet (available at local businesses) and/or make a donation at the Run site. Whatever your choice, please know that every dollar counts. McDonald with Terry For The Long Haul

One of the most misused words in the English language is “hero.” It is applied to far too many people, like well-compensated professional athletes, who have done nothing to deserve it. My definition of a hero is someone who does something for the greater good. They do it because it is the right thing to do, and they do it selflessly and over a long period of time. Charles McDonald, the owner of the Grand Hotel for the last 8 years, has been the organizer of the Terry Fox Run in Lindsay for the last 29 years. In that time, local participants have raised almost $442,000 for cancer research. Charles began as a participant at the run in Peterborough, honouring his father who was taken by cancer. When Charles relocated to Lindsay 30 years ago he noticed an article in the local newspaper saying there would be no Terry Fox Run in Lindsay if an organizer couldn’t be found. Charles did what heroes do, he stepped forward -- and the rest is history. The Terry Fox Run has been a family affair for the McDonald family with Charles, his wife Amy, his kids, his Mom, his brother and many friends and family
involved. The Run occurs in Lindsay September 17 starting with registration from 9 until 10 at the Lindsay Recreation Complex. The Run begins at 10. There is a one kilometre route, a five kilometre route, and a 10 kilometre route. Charles stresses this is a family day where you can walk, ride your bike, or even take the family dog. You may, of course, run like Terry did, but it is not a race. In 2016, participants in Lindsay raised over $90,000 for the Terry Fox Foundation, which has been recognized as one of Canada’s best administered charities. Since 1980, $750 million has been raised worldwide for cancer research with 82 cents of every dollar from the 9,000 events that day in Canada alone going directly into research for a cure. Terry Fox, when asked why he ran, said, “We need to strive to help others, even if we don’t know sometimes who they are.” Few Canadians would argue that Terry was not a hero for what he did, and Charles McDonald has followed the advice of Terry for the last 29 years. His dedication to this cause certainly fits my definition of who a local hero is. Charles is dedicating this year’s run to his brother Peter, and a number of close friends, who recently passed from this horrible disease. It’s time for the Bobcaygeon Annual Cruise Fest -- an antique, classic and custom car show. This runs on Saturday, September 16 from 10 until 4 (if it’s raining, check it out on Sunday, September 17). The Lindsay Exhibition is a five-day event, the largest annual event in the City of Kawartha Lakes. Cambridge Street United Church has called Rev. Craig Donnelly as its new lead minister. He began in the position at the start of August, and has been busy meeting members of the congregation and community. Although he is coming to the church after serving large United churches in the greater Toronto area, Craig is familiar with life in a smaller town. “My wife, Dawn, and I both grew up in Orangeville before it became a busy commuter town, so this kind of feels like coming home.” Craig most recently served as lead minister at Eglinton St. George’s United Church in north Toronto. He has experience in settings outside the church, too, having worked at a community outreach centre in Toronto’s Jane-Finch neighbourhood; with young offenders at the Vanier Correctional Institute in Brampton; and at the Scott Mission’s Fresh Air Camp. Craig holds a Master of Divinity degree from Emmanuel College at the University of Toronto, and a home of the

Doctor of Ministry from Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena, California. Rev. Paul Reed had signalled his plan to retired from ministry at the end of June, so the church began the demanding process of searching for a new lead minister early in the year. Rev. Craig Donnelly’s combination of experience and expertise appealed to the search committee, and he was called as the church’s minister on Aug. 1. Craig is married to Dawn Donnelly, who is a community dietitian in Oshawa. They have three children: Madeline, Benjamin, and Tamara. CURVE LAKE POW WOW
The tradition of the Pow Wow goes back centuries to a time when families travelled the land, following the seasons and harvesting what would be needed to sustain themselves through the long and harsh Canadian winter. Families and friends reunited once a year to dance, drum, feast and give thanks to the Creator, and to renew treaties and friendships with neighbouring Nations The Curve Lake Pow Wow is held annually at the end of the summer, bringing together Indigenous and non-Indigenous people to honour the ancestors and uphold this scared tradition. The celebration consists of two days of dancing, contests and presentations with vendors and performers. According to Curve Lake First Nation, “At the Pow Wow, we gather in a circle. In a circle, everyone is equal. The dancers move in a circle, searching the ground for the footprints of our ancestors in order to follow their ways. The drum beats out the solemn rhythm of all creation. It is the sound we remember from before we were born. It is the rhythm of our mothers’ heartbeat. The drums summon up a memory that is common to us all.” This year’s Pow Wow takes place Saturday, September 16 and Sunday, September 17. There is a Focus on Treaties with displays of Wampum Belts and

Treaties, developed by Maurice Switzer, traditional knowledge keeper and citizen of the Mississaugas of the Alderville First Nation. There is a sunrise ceremony at 6am both days. If you’re going to attend the sunrise ceremony, women are asked to wear skirts. The Grass Dancers will enter the grounds at 10:30 to prepare the grounds. The Grand Entry is at 12 noon, during which everyone stands as the Eagle Staff, the flags and the dancers enter. It’s also important to honour and respect protocol during the Pow Wow. The Master of Ceremonies will announce other events that require standing as a gesture of respect. If you’re going to take photographs or recordings, you should ask permission of the participants. The Master of Ceremonies will announce when picture taking is not allowed. We are asked not to touch the dancers’ regalia. These have special meanings and the handmade regalia, which can cost thousands of dollars, are cherished. Also, please show respect to the Elders, dancers and drummers. Here are some other rules: • No drugs or alcohol are allowed. • Pets are not permitted on the Pow Wow grounds. The only exception is service animals. Admission to the Pow Wow is $8 for adults (13 to 59), $5 for youth and seniors while children 5 and under are admitted for free. Visitors should bring their own lawnchairsSocialServicesDivision and sunscreen. Parking is in designated areas and a shuttle service is available to the Pow Wow Grounds.

The Choristers will begin a new musical season with a practice on September 5, right after Labour Day at the Retirement Suites on West Street at 7pm. If we are lucky, we might get cookies and coffee at the break provided by the kitchen staff. They are usually mouthwatering! I imagine there will be plenty of catching up with everyone’s news from the summer. Music will be handed out, and soon we will realize that there is work to be done as a Christmas concert is scheduled for December. We will be missing a few people this season due to members who have moved out of town, health issues or other commitments. So we are hoping that there are some singers out there looking for a choir to join or a new venture for the winter months. Our biggest need is for Sopranos and Tenors, but all sections would be happy to welcome new members. MORE FUNDING FOR THE ARTS
The provincial government has announced an increase to the annual funding for the Ontario Arts Council. Currently, the agency, that gives grants and services to Ontario-based artists and arts organization, gets $30 million a year from the province. By 2021, that will go up to $80 million per year. Premier Kathleen Wynne says investing in the arts sector is investing in young people, communities and a more inclusive, innovative society.

The organization has provided this service for the last 3 years using the Iron Mountain Shredding Company. Proceeds from this project will go to support local community service projects. Fenelon Falls resident Gail Welch (pictured) is one of many examples of the caring that Hospice volunteers bring to Community Care Health & Care Network. Gail has been volunteering with Hospice Services for almost two years. She got involved in order to help others. “I wanted to give back to my community some of the support my family received when our granddaughter was seriously ill,” she says. “We will always remember the caring and compassionate support we received and, thankfully, she is well today. The volunteers we met were such special people.” On a weekly basis, Gail dedicates her time to supporting Hospice clients living with critical illness in the community, as well as spending Tuesday mornings volunteering in the Hospice office where the team relies on her to help keep things running smoothly. Gail visits her current community client one afternoon per week. “The minute she came into our home, it was as if she had known me all her life,” her client says. “We talk about everything, our children, cooking… just everything. Gail will make you laugh. She is a very understanding lady.” Gail agrees that she and her client do spend a great deal of time laughing and sharing. “She is dying,” Gail says “but that’s not what we focus on. We talk about whatever she wants to talk about.” The family member of one of Gail’s past clients remembers that, “Gail was easy to talk to, and she was very kind and compassionate to our mother.” The rewards of her volunteer work are many, including the people she has had the opportunity to meet - clients, staff and volunteers, and the chance to be a valued part of such a caring team.

Alarm bells went off for local resident, Susan Frank, when signs, warning of chemical spraying, started popping up along area highways. The signs have been found on County Road 17, Highway 36, Highway 35 and others.
OSTEOPOROSIS AND HEARING LOSS
Osteoporosis, a bone-thinning disease that is associated with declining bone density and fractures, has recently been linked with “sudden onset hearing loss.” This type of hearing loss, which usually occurs in one ear, either all at once or over a period of a few days, is usually “idiopathic” (meaning the cause is never known). However, this new finding that those with osteoporosis are 76 percent more likely to develop sudden onset hearing loss may help explain the cause of some cases. While the study does not prove a definite cause-andeffect relationship between osteoporosis and sudden onset hearing loss, it is thought that inflammation and/ or mineral loss in the three tiny bones of the middle ear may play a role. Frank is outraged that the city is using such a dangerous chemical when in her opinion it’s not necessary. “The spraying of the guardrails is for what reason? Cosmetic? Essential? Seriously… How about in the winter when we have 3 feet of snow on those guard rails, how essential is the spraying then?” The City of Kawartha Lakes says its necessary to help keep invasive species in check. Bryan Robinson, Director of Public Works says, “Application of a registered and controlled herbicide is applied to strategic locations to control noxious weeds (such as Giant Hogweed, Poison Ivy and Wild Parsnip) and to clear weeds around traffic barriers (guiderails). This is a standard process within most municipalities and on provincial roads (MTO).” The chemical being used is called Glyphosate according to the city. Glyphosate is a broad spectrum herbicide used to kill weeds and grasses that compete with crops according to Wikipedia. It is a non-selective herbicide, meaning it will kill most plants. The areas around where the chemical has been sprayed appear to have been burned. The City says it is following all the guidelines for application. “Chemicals are applied by a licensed Contractor in accordance with applicable Provincial legislation under contract with the City,” Robinson told Kawartha 411.

SUMMER’S OVER … NOW WHAT?

So your summer vacation is over and it’s back to the daily grind for you. Maybe you have kids to get to school and after-school activities or maybe it’s just about you, getting back into the swing of your 9-to-5 job. Whatever you have to do now, for many it can be pretty depressing. You know the winter’s coming, and even if we don’t like to think about that, the days are getting shorter and cooler. Scientifically, the decrease in sunlight may cause a drop in serotonin and melatonin, the brain chemicals that affects our moods. So what do we do to try to stave off the wave of depression? Jack Veitch with the CMHA Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ridge Branch gave us these tips: 1. Keep busy – If you’re used to being active in the summer, find some activities that can help you cope with not being outdoors. Join a swimming club or maybe the gym. Jack says, “It doesn’t have to be extreme exercise like pumping iron. Something as simple as walking the dog or yoga will get your heart rate up and make you feel better.” 2. Get connected with others either by joining a club of like-minded people with a hobby or cause. “This will give you a sense of purpose,” says Jack. “It provides a reason to get up, dressed and out on certain days of the week.” 3. Set some realistic goals that you can work towards over the next few months. Whether it’s doing some small home renovations or even planning next year’s vacation, you can accomplish something. 4. After a summer of eating on the run, it’s time to pay attention to your diet. “Fall is a great time for fresh vegetables that can help you eat a more healthy diet,” says Jack. “The better fuel I give my brain, the home better I will feel.” of home of the

5. Post-summer is the time to get back into a healthy sleep pattern. Jack says, “We tend to stay up later during our summer holidays. NEW COORDINATOR FOR HEALTH TEAM

The Kawartha North Family Health Team (FHT), as a member of the Haliburton - Kawartha Lakes Poverty Reduction Roundtable, is pleased to announce the hiring of Jessica Knott as Poverty Reduction Coordinator for an 11 month Ontario Trillium Foundation Grant. In 2011 the City of Kawartha Lakes and County of Haliburton, at the request of a number of community agencies, began the development of a Poverty Reduction Strategy. Over the next several years, a Steering Committee, comprised of community agencies and municipal Councillors and staff, led the development of a number of reports. Included among those were five theme-based Action Plans (Children and Youth; Employment & Education; Food Security; Housing; and Transportation). A total of 50 recommendations, included in the five Action Plans, were endorsed by both City and County Councils. The local Poverty Reduction Roundtable was established in the summer of 2016 to develop specific initiatives and implementation plans for the recommendations. In 2017, the Roundtable was awarded a $73,300 grant by the Ontario Trillium Foundation. This allowed the Roundtable to reach out to community agencies to convene around the issue of poverty and to review and further implement the Action Plans with the support of a dedicated coordinator. ANOTHER CRAFT BREWERY TO OPEN DOORS

The building across from the fire hall on Cambridge St. N. is undergoing a complete renovation. Aaron Young, one of the shareholders, hosted our Rotary Club to hear and see what plans are in store for this historic building in downtown Lindsay. The vision is to provide an eclectic venue for good quality, locally produced craft beer, with a ‘local pub’ atmosphere; a dining room (capacity 150); a dining/ bar/event area available for private occasions. There are three floors in the old building. The basement, first and second floors will be utilized for the brewery, pub and dining room in that order. The third floor will be entirely rentable office space. The second and third floors will be accessible by a new elevator. Third floor space at the front of the building will showcase the structural beams. As you might imagine, there is no shortage of red tape. That said, the work is progressing forward (not as quickly as hoped) but moving forward. The brewery will produce four different beers; uniquely named, Murph’s Daily Ration (light stout), home of Brownie’s Blond (Belgian blond stout), Dirty Bird (red the home
ale), and Laughing Troll (lagered ale). The restaurant named The Pie Eyed Monk, will also feature a genuine Italian, wood fired pizza oven, and pasta made on site. All in all, a large undertaking that without the faith and trust of contributing investors, Aaron says would not be feasible, but today, a worthy enterprise that promises to attract visitors and patrons.
