I wonder what it feels like to wake up the morning after you’ve walked a tightrope across Niagara Falls. Was it difficult to resist the urge to run the last twenty meters or so to touch ground on the other side? Maintaining that even, measured, insanely focused stride must have required unimaginable mental, physical and emotional endurance. And think about what a tremendous feeling it would be to be welcomed by the folks waiting to greet you. Just ask Nik Wallenda. Welcomes are a big deal. Especially warm ones. Being a customer service fanatic and relatively new to the community, I am both intrigued and acutely aware of the ways in which one is greeted, treated, served and welcomed. That’s the benefit of having “fresh eyes.” Most people don’t know you and you don’t know them until that first exchange or transaction is over. It makes it is easy to observe the nuances and behaviours with some degree of objectivity when one is more or less just

another face that may or may not belong to an out-of-town visitor. The people who stand out are those who offer warm welcomes—to visitors and/or life-long residents and everyone in-between-without hesitation, without conditions. They’re the ones who understand the value of a warm welcome. Moving to a new school, a new job, community, a new life, visiting a new place, is a little like walking a tightrope. You’ve done it. Right? Believe it or not, people can be intimidated to even walk into a place of business for the first time. Customer service is about the feeling the individual experiences during the transaction. I would like to thank the Good Samaritan Lady who immediately contacted the Fire Department when she saw me faint while walking in the extreme heat of the day, Wednesday, June 20th in Bobcaygeon. Thanks to the members of the Fire Department for their prompt response and courteous treatment while requesting the fast appearance of an ambulance whose efficient team took me to Ross Memorial Hospital.

Urgent Message for All Waterway Stakeholders

As you are well aware the Trent-Severn Waterway (TSW) and Rideau Canal--both operated Parks Canada--have been identified for reductions within the recent Federal budget. Last Friday afternoon at Trent University the 4 TSW Waterway MP’s (Bruce Stanton, Barry Devolin, Dean Del Mastro, Ric Norlock) presented to a group of Municipal leaders and business operators the amount of cutbacks the Waterway will have to absorb within its daily operations. The MP’s will be asking for Stakeholder input this summer to take forth to the Minister of the Environment. Canada’s Historic Canals are in danger! Your help is needed today! The Trent-Severn Waterway, Rideau Canal and Western Quebec Canals are in trouble. March 29, 2012 the Federal Budget cut funding to Parks Canada by 29.2 million dollars. The Parks Canada Agency under the Federal Department of the Environment is responsible for the ongoing day to day water control, operation, maintenance and visitor experiences within the various Canal corridors throughout Ontario and Quebec. On April 11 the CEO of Parks Canada (Alan Latourelle) contacted all Canal Employees about their future employment with the following news: “Parks Canada will align the length of its season, hours of operation, and personal service at locks on canals to focus investments on the periods of highest requirements.” On May 18--Opening Day for Canal operations-Minister of the Environment, Peter Kent officially opened the waterway with the following notice to stakeholders: “As we implement changes to next year’s navigation season, Parks Canada will work closely with local stakeholders, Members of Parliament and partners to minimize, where possible, the impacts of these changes on neighbouring communities and partners in the tourism community.” During the last 2 months speculation surrounding these two phrases has been rampant throughout the Waterway Corridors. Municipal Mayors, Community Leaders and MP’s have been gathering information to be delivered to the Minister by August 1. This

In jeopardy is the recognizable huge economic spinoff from the traditional tourist season along the Corridor region which revolves around Victoria Day to Thanksgiving. Also being evaluated is the ability of a reduced Parks staff to properly control water movement throughout the Watershed. What should you do? Ask what the future landscape will look like after cutbacks have been implemented. How will the Parks organization deliver their services to both the land and water based users? What will these re-aligned services be? Ask how much of the $29.2 million cutback to Parks Canada will be directly taken from Canal operations over the next 3 years. Is the Canal reduction in proportion with other Parks across Canada? Ask how you can become involved with the stakeholder consultation process. Your voice is important for the decision makers to properly align services. Decisions have already been made by the Senior Executive Management within Parks Canada and continue to be implemented without proper consultation with the stakeholders at large. CITY–UNION

On May 17th the Union left the bargaining table and the City has taken the next step available under the Ontario Labour Relations Act and requested a “No Board” Report from the Ministry of Labour. This report, once issued, provides a 17-day countdown to the union being in a legal strike position. The City of Kawartha Lakes remains available to meet with the union and work to reach a negotiated agreement that is fair to our employees but also reflects the economic realities that the City and our taxpayers face. To date, no report has been received from the Department of Labour.

TRANSIT ADVISORY COMMITTEE

The Transit Advisory Committee put forward a request to Council asking that their mandate be changed to that of a full Transit Management Board. Currently the Committee is responsible for three separate but overlapping components: 1. Lindsay Transit Service (Lindsay only) conventional bus service, serving a population of approximately 19,300 residents. 2. Lindsay Mobile Service for the disabled). This service provides door-to-door transportation residents with mobility challenges and users of this service are approved based on established criteria and needs. 3. A pilot rural transit program that commenced June of 2010. The Rural Transit pilot project consists of four (4) routes. A small staff that includes a Transit Supervisor, an Administrative Assistant and thirteen (13) part time drivers currently manages all services. Additional support is provided by various other City Departments including Human Resources,

Fleet Services, Finance and the Director of Public Works office and support staff. In reviewing the proposal at Council a heated debate ensued with some Councillors, most notably Glen Campbell taking exception to the broad level of responsibilities that the Advisory Board seeks. Campbell was adamant that Council reject the proposal as it gave the Board too much unnecessary power particularly in the area of money. However the majority of Council did not feel the same way and in a recorded vote (10 in favour and 6 against) approved the motion for Staff to look further into establishing the Board. The one issue that did not surface at the Council meeting and that gives me some concern is one item within the proposal advocating that the new Board be responsible for and I quote “This would include, but not be limited to the current review and visioning exercise being undertaken with regard to Community Care supported services.” At present Community Care operate and manage their services separately and have been ably doing so since 1989. If the proposal is accepted as it stands that may change and could mean another level of bureaucracy being imposed.

ACTING CHIEF ADMINISTRATIVE OFFICER

Due to the imminent departure of Al Horsman effective June 15, 2012, Council considers it advisable to appoint an Acting CAO for the City of Kawartha Lakes until the position can be filled permanently.

SPECIAL EVENTS ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT PARTNERSHIP FUND

Council approved funding in the amount of $ 34,500.00 of the $100,000.00 operating allotment for the Special Events Economic Development Partnership Fund for special events planned for 2012.

THE QUARRY DILEMMA

Sharon King Reports on the June 23 Public Meeting A second public meeting to address the concerns of a proposed quarry was held on June 23rd at Caygeon Lanes, Bobcaygeon. Application has been made by Paul Ritchie of Dewdney Mountain Farms Ltd. to establish a limestone quarry and concrete plant in Peterborough County. The area in question is located on Concession 15 in Harvey Township with frontage on Ledge Road. Galway-Cavendish-Harvey Council must approve an amendment to the Official Plan that would change the zoning of the 432-acre site from rural to an aggregate resource extractor. Approximately 500 individuals attended the meeting hosted by the Township Council in order to either voice their objections or support of the project. One by one, individuals made their pleas to Council. Men and women, members of our community, were tearful as they contemplated the future if the quarry is approved. Increased truck traffic was a main concern with an estimate of one truck every six minutes. This figure is approximate as the applicant requested unlimited tonnage. Concerns were also raised about noise levels and pollution from the operation and traffic. This quarry would create one of the longest haul routes in the County and the trucks would use City of Kawartha Lakes County Rd. #36. Typically, the cost to maintain roads and bridges, even with a haul route agreement, has fallen on the taxpayers. Some said that Council should consider a moratorium on Quarries. There is no shortage of quarried limestone at this time and in this case the quarry would not supply material locally or provide local jobs. There are eighteen quarries in GalwayCavendish-Harvey and local residents say they have done their part in supplying Ontario with aggregate. Two speakers from the First Nations said the site should be left alone and “Mother Nature protected and preserved.” The pure water from an artesian well at the corner of County Rd. 36 and Quarry Rd., wildlife including species at risk, a deeryard, fish sanctuary and a protected wetland could be at risk. Concerns surfaced over the effects on

surrounding watercourses, questioning the water source that will supply the operation. Mr. and Mrs. Klein, health care professionals, expressed concern about health issues from noise, dusts especially limestone dust and stress. Questions were raised about who will enforce the regulations that this quarry must operate under. Who will be responsible for any cleanup when the quarry shuts down? Tourism may be adversely affected, property values will plummet and tranquility will be a thing of the past. How does this benefit our community? Becki Jory spoke to the feeling of the group. She explained how she and Ryan had poured their savings and their hearts into building a house, a home, and a life in the community, and how people are attracted to the area because they want to escape the concrete jungle and enjoy the quiet and natural beauty. Residents appear to expect Council to put residents first over distant large conglomerates that will rape the land and leave an ugly hole in the ground as our future legacy. www.stopthisquarry.com

To appreciate the words that follow, I suggest that you beg, borrow or steal (online) a recording of “Circle of Life” from the movie The Lion King. It will help set the scene for my unabashed bath in nostalgia and homespun philosophy. This is not for the cynical or jaded among you and if you fit that category it is time to move on to the Horoscopes. Recently I had the honour and pleasure to attend the graduation ceremonies of the Leslie Frost Public School in Lindsay. Thirty-four young teens were to graduate and move on to the next phase of their education. Dressed in their finery and as excited as they could possibly be, they assembled along with an audience of parents, grandparents, friends and the teachers who had guided them to this moment. The Procession of Graduates was followed by an awards ceremony to rival the Academy Awards, a delightful Valedictory Address by an equally delightful young recipient, the Honour Roll and finally the presentation of the diplomas. There is nothing unique or unusual about these proceedings. The same or very similar ceremonies take place throughout the land at this time of the year, each with its own group of proud parents and nervous graduates. But, when you pause to reflect upon the scene before you, there is ample reason for optimism, pride and sentimental feelings. These, after all, are the doctors, carpenters and farmers of the future and, even more importantly, the moms and dads who will someday attend the graduation of their own children. Turn up the volume of “Circle of Life” as it begins to reach its crescendo passage. Miracles are all around us and you do not have to search to find them. and refreshing lust for life that is exhibited by the young people. This is what keeps the world turning and gives us hope for the future. CANADA DAY By Jeremy Le Page Birthday parties don’t get much better than Canada Day. Waving flags, painted faces, red hats and clothing, and of course, fireworks. Hordes of people from towns and cities all across the country get together for the July 1 festivities. The celebration marks the birth of our nation, in 1867, although the day was formally referred to as Dominion Day until the passing of the Canada Act in 1982. My own first memories of Canada Day go back pretty far. I remember being in Ottawa, the nation’s capital, where the celebrations are unparalleled to this day. I recall visiting with family and friends, eating too much food, and at my young age, the excitement of staying up late in order to glimpse the colourful explosions of light in the summer sky. It was truly a wonderful experience. I also remember quieter gatherings, in the country, where neighbours would host barbeques and share stories while the children played endlessly in the warm sun. Both types of celebration were nice, and my remaining memories of Canada Day oscillate between the larger venues and the smaller; the energetic celebrations and the more intimate festivities. Now, I have my own children. There are memories waiting to be created for them. This year will be their first real taste of Canada Day. For the past several years I have worked on this holiday, but this year I will be spending it with my family. And everything will be seen as if it were new in my children’s eyes. They already have their Canada Day shirts ready to go; their faces are ready for some red and white paint. And of course, we’ll let them stay up later than normal, for the main event, the fireworks over the lake near where we live. After all, Canada is a nation made stronger by the strength of its communities and family values. And it is, truly, a birthday celebrating this ideal. Plus, I like fireworks as much as the kids do.

Communities Receive Canada Day Funding The City of Kawartha Lakes Community Services, Parks, Recreation and Culture Division will provide a total of $10,000 in Canada Day funding to six communities celebrating Canada Day in the City of Kawartha Lakes. This funding is in addition to $20,000 in support from the federal government, through the Canadian Heritage Celebrate Canada Program, which is an increase of $8300 from the $11,700.00 received in 2011. The following Canada Day committees will receive funding for their 2012 Canada Day events: Lindsay, Bobcaygeon, Kinmount, Fenelon Falls, the Omemee Lions Club and the Oakwood Firefighters Association. The funding will be used towards the costs of various aspects of these celebrations including fireworks, entertainment, promotional and logistic expenses. “We are pleased to support these local community groups in offering each unique event. The commitment and dedication of the volunteers and organizations make it possible for each community to Celebrate Canada in their own way,” stated Courtney Woolacott, Community Development Coordinator with the City of Kawartha Lakes. These community events would not be possible without the generous support of Canadian Heritage’s Celebrate Canada program, the City of Kawartha Lakes and the numerous community members and volunteers. We’ve entertained many Grade 3 classes this spring! We prepared a challenging program to teach our young people about being a settler in the New Country of Canada. This seems appropriate as we rally together to celebrate the history of our great country on Canada Day. Sir John A. MacDonald might be surprised to see how things have changed since he first dreamed of traversing our country with a railway. His promise of a railway stretching from sea to sea came true and now we are joined by rail, plane, highway and internet from the farthest points of the north to the most remote mountains, the plains, the cities and the Maritimes. It was a great dream and a man of action made it a reality! We hope you are able to get out on Canada Day to celebrate our country. Challenge yourself to learn one new thing about our history each day during the first week of July. Consider it a celebration challenge. July will be a busy month: Bible camp, brass and woodwind music camps and our Settlers’ camps. On July 7, 2012 we will join the Bobcaygeon and District Horticultural Society as they celebrate their 90th Anniversary. We are honoured to host this tribute to local gardeners. Seeds brought from England, horticultural artefacts and more are on display in the Muir House. July 13, 14, 15th is the Bobcaygeon Art Festival. Local and featured artists will display their original works. Come and enjoy the scenery. Also on July 15th at 3 pm, we will host the official opening of the Waterwheel Project. Congratulations! You have conditionally purchased your new home. Now comes the big decision: Do you need a home inspection? If so, why? The inspection process is vital in any real estate transaction. A professional home inspector will walk you through the home where you will be provided with an unemotional, unbiased opinion of the current condition of the property. Home inspectors are not there to pass or fail the home, but to educate you on the condition of the home and its components so you can make your own decision based on price, condition and the expected lifespan of its components. Once you buy a home, you are responsible to maintain, repair and pay the bills. It is best to know as much as you can about potential problems before you buy. The home inspection industry is not regulated by Ontario government. Inspectors perform differently. It’s a discipline that requires special training, knowledge and communication skills. Reputable

home and property inspectors should belong to a Provincial or Canadian Association that set strict minimum education, qualification and performance standards for its members. Any inspector you hire should perform to a minimum set of standards and code of conduct as set out by the Ontario Association of Home Inspectors (OAHI). This ensures that all major components of the building system will be inspected and that procedures are consistent with a standard. The inspector facilitates the inspection process. Their knowledge of building systems and training in recognising defects helps to report issues about the building and safety items that can affect you and your family. The inspector can only look at visible and accessible items; they are not permitted to dismantle or disconnect any fixture, or building system, and are not allowed moving furniture, appliances or personal items. Inspectors are limited to what is visually observed at the time of inspection. That means that the inspector will be unable to see behind walls or under the flooring. Following the inspection, only you will receive a detailed report with digital pictures and diagrams. It should lay out descriptions, limitations, recommendations, and a summary of findings, on roofing, exterior, structure, electrical, heating, cooling, insulation, plumbing, interior and any safety issues. What if the report reveals problems? No house is perfect. It doesn’t mean you shouldn’t buy the home, only that you will know what to expect. All About Your Health Treating Fungal Toenails

Fungal infection of the toenails (called onychomycosis) occurs when a fungus infects the tissue underneath the toenail. The result is a brown-yellow discolouration of the nail. Often the nail becomes thickened and raised and may begin to chip. It commonly involves several nails simultaneously. In some cases, pain or infection can result from very thickened nails. The fungus can also spread to surrounding skin and other parts of the body such as fingernails. Fungal infections often occur in people with persistent moisture in their feet, such as with footwear that does not allow air circulation or in those who perspire excessively in their feet. It can also result from injuries to the nails, and there is evidence that people may be genetically predisposed to these kinds of infections. Certainly, people with diabetes are more prone to developing fungal nail infections due to their weakened immunity. The diagnosis of a fungal toenail can be made in part based on the appearance of the toe. However, not every discoloured, chipped, or thick nail is fungal. Other problems such as psoriasis can cause similar disfigurations of the nails. Your chiropodist has the required foot health expertise to make the correct diagnosis and to provide the proper treatment. In some cases a toenail sample may be obtained for testing to identify the species of fungus so that it is correctly treated. The treatment for fungal nail infections usually

involves regular in-clinic reduction of the fungal nail by your chiropodist and an antifungal antibiotic medication and special antifungal foot-wash which your chiropodist will prescribe. In very severe cases, the infected nail may need to be removed surgically by your chiropodist. Some patients may elect to have a specialized prosthetic nail applied to restore a more normal appearance to the nail while treatment is ongoing. Naturally, the best way to avoid fungal infections is to avoid contact with the spores. This means wearing shoes, water-shoes, and slippers in areas where the spores are most present like public change rooms and showers, swimming pool decks, and hotel floors. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s also important to keep footwear and socks clean, as well as moist areas of your home such as your bathroom floor and tub or shower.

the phrase mentioned numerous times or perhaps you’ve even taken an online test to determine which type best describes you. What Is Left Brain–Right Brain Theory? According to the theory of left-brain or rightbrain dominance, each side of the brain controls different types of thinking. Additionally, people are said to prefer one type of thinking to the other. For example, a person who is “left-brained” is often said to be more logical, analytical and objective, while a person who is “right-brained” is said to be more intuitive, thoughtful and subjective. In psychology, the theory is based on what is known as the lateralization of brain function. So does one side of the brain really control specific functions? Are people either left-brained or right-brained? The right-brain/left-brain theory grew out of the work of Roger W. Sperry, who was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1981. While studying the effects of epilepsy, Sperry discovered that cutting the corpus collosum (the structure that connects the two hemispheres of the brain) could reduce or eliminate seizures. However, these patients also experienced other symptoms after the communication pathway between the two sides of the brain was cut. For example, many split-brain patients found themselves unable to name objects that were processed by the right side of the brain, but were able to name objects that were processed by the left side of the brain. Based on this information, Sperry suggested that the left side of the brain controlled language.

Later research has shown that the brain is not nearly as dichotomous as once thought. For example, recent research has shown that abilities in subjects such as math are actually strongest when both halves of the brain work together. The Right Brain According to the left-brain/right-brain dominance theory, the right side of the brain is best at expressive and creative tasks. Some of the abilities that are popularly associated with the right side of the brain include: Recognizing faces, expressing emotions, music, reading emotions, colour, images, intuition, creativity. The Left Brain The left side of the brain is considered to be adept at tasks that involve logic, language and analytical thinking. The left brain is often described as being better at language, logic, critical thinking, numbers and reasoning. The new cutting edge neurological approach is to identify which hemisphere is not as active (nondominant), which eye is dominant, and, using the five senses (vision, taste, smell, touch, and hearing) to stimulate that weak hemisphere, create better utilization of both lobes working together. We talked about eye-light therapy in the last issue of the promoter as one example of this cutting edge therapy. We can use one’s balance to determine which side of the body is being stimulated more via the brain hemisphere (opposite side) and use specific exercises to rehabilitate the patient both physically and mentally. Posture is another important aspect of rehabilitation as new research shows 90% of all

input to the brain comes from proper movement of the spine and legs. As posture improves so does brain function. This offers an incredible opportunity to help to rehabilitate the brain by activating the non-dominant hemisphere and help stroke victims, concussion patients, MS, Fibromyalgia, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, depression, headaches and patients suffering with chronic pain. This therapy is also being used currently by the US Olympic swim team to enhance athletic performance, as well as by researchers to improve learning, memory and behavior in children.

BLUE-GREEN ALGAE IS HERE The Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ridge District Health Unit encourages residents and visitors who use area lakes and waterways to learn about BlueGreen Algae (BGA) to reduce potential health risks. Blue-Green Algae: Get to Know Its True Colours is the name of an information campaign being launched by the HKPR District Health Unit. The goal is to help people who use area lakes for domestic and recreational use to recognize BGA so that they can adjust their use accordingly. The Ministry of the Environment has confirmed BGA in different parts of Sturgeon Lake in the City of Kawartha Lakes. “We are encouraging people to be aware of bluegreen algae so they can take the precautions needed to protect their health,” says Richard Ovcharovich, Manager of Environmental Health for the HKPR District Health Unit. While many forms of blue-green algae are harmless, some forms produce toxins that can be harmful to humans and animals. “Blue-green algae may be an inconvenience but there’s no reason to let it ruin summer fun on the water,” says Ovcharovich. “People just need to be aware of blue-green algae, know what it looks like, assess the water quality before using it, and take precautions when blue-green algae is suspected.” See www.hkpr.on.ca.

Each brings a wealth of expertise that only begins with data acquisition, archival coordination and cemetery research. on the Centre for all types of ancestry research, support and guidance. A phone call, an email, a walk into the Centre always triggers a response. Smith says, “A fellow was researching the history of fire fighters in Ontario. He contacted us. We were able to direct him to Trent Valley Archives and Canadian Fire Fighters Museum in Port Hope.” Cottagers, for instance, often want to know the history of their land. The land registration records hold a great deal of original documentation including deeds that were handwritten by Sir Sandford Fleming. The Centre also stores records on those who served in the Boer War, the Fenian Raids, Vimy Ridge, the First and Second World Wars, says Smith. While the Greater Harvey Historical Society and Archival Centre does have its location in the Harvey Township offices a few minutes outside of Bobcaygeon, the records and research extend beyond Peterborough County, including Harvey, Galway and Cavendish and Victoria Counties. People come into the center on a weekly basis to research distant relatives, homes of past family members, old buildings, grave yard archives. Membership has benefits including newsletters, hundreds of preserved photos and information and a host of services such as, yes, how to research your family tree. The Archive Centre has many Family Tree Albums of families from the area. It’s a great place to begin your roots research. Be sure to look for the blue tee shirts with the Greater Harvey Historical Society logo at upcoming events beginning with the Canada Day Celebration at the Buckhorn Community Centre. Imagine--when a youthful Queen Elizabeth began that first day of a remarkable 60 year reign, the Bobcaygeon Horticultural Society had already been toiling for 30 years to promote horticulture and to beautify the Village of Bobcaygeon. The Society will honour this tradition throughout the year. The first of several events is the 16th Annual Garden Tour on Saturday, July 7th. The tour features eight unique gardens and includes admission to Kawartha Settlers’ Village (KSV) where visitors will be intrigued by displays and events commemorating those 90 years of service. Take time to enjoy an anniversary tea offered to all tour participants. Of the eight gardens, two are public; they enhance our community and honour individuals who have contributed to the Village in significant ways. Located at the Service Centre are a surprising number of container, annual, perennial and shrub beds. Nearby is the Shea Memorial Garden, remarkable for its use of dry land (xeriscape) planting. The Gardens of KSV include the Frank Poole Memorial Heirloom garden, which features specimen plants collected from descendants of some of our earliest settlers, the newly-renovated Earl Murray Memorial Garden next to the replica grist mill, water wheel and pond, and the Children’s Garden where local grade 3 students grow vegetables for the Bobcaygeon Food Bank. Six private gardens are featured this year, each representing a different style of landscaping from manicured town house gardens to xeriscaped plantings to rocky challenges. At each property, members of the Bobcaygeon & District Horticulture Society will welcome you. Master Gardeners will be available at several locations to answer questions. Several of the gardens will offer crafts, artwork and plants for sale. Maps are provided with the tour passes, guiding you from garden to garden. Prizes will be drawn at the end of the tour for all who submit the tour pass at their last venue. Tour passes, on sale for $15.00, may be purchased at Anna’s Perennials (63 Shoreview Drive off Hwy 17), Bobcaygeon Chamber of Commerce (Canal St), My Favourite Things (King St, Bobcaygeon), Strang’s Valu-Mart Garden Centre (Village Gate Plaza, Hwy 36, Bobcaygeon) and Anna’s Perennials Booth at the Bobcaygeon Farmers’ Market. Passes will also be on sale at each of the gardens on the day of the tour. Tour pass includes admission to KSV as well as the anniversary tea.
