From my perch
I knew I was back on familiar ground when I looked out two small windows from inside the council chambers while waiting for OMB hearings to begin at Trent Lakes. Perfectly framed in one window, against fields, forest and blue skies, was Chuck Burns, an old friend from when our now-grown children used to play together. And perfectly framed in the other window was my former wife, Elaine Bird (we’re still on pretty good terms, I hasten to note). It was déjà vu all over again. That’s how it’s gone these first couple of weeks with The Promoter, as I’ve run into one after another of the many people I got to know in the 15 years I lived in Bobcaygeon. New relationships and adventures took me away eventually—to Baffin Island, and to that other howling wilderness,
the urban one we call Toronto. But I was determined to make it back home—I was born in Lindsay, after all. Publisher Max Miller and I had talked several times over the years about a role for me at the paper, but our needs and opportunities had never seemed to match. Now they have, and here I am. All I can say is WOW, and it’s great to be back. There’s never a dull moment in community journalism. And these Kawartha communities in midsummer are bursting with vitality. There is more going on here than any one journalist could possibly keep up with. So I’m happy to say I’m going to have to rely on all of YOU out there to keep me informed and up to date. And to keep one another informed and up to date. This paper is a vital part of the community. It belongs to the community. Let’s make it the best place we can to share our joys, sorrows, dreams and achievements, and to talk out our differences. It’s what we’re here for. editor@thepromoter.ca

Plebiscite proposal on quarry amendment
Sometimes chronology helps put things into context. On May 5, 2004, Galway-Cavendish & Harvey held a meeting called the “Aggregate Policy Review Committee” with retained planner Mr. Josephs as an invited guest. According to the Registry Office documents, Mr. Ritchie of Dewdney Mountain Farms Ltd. closed the deal for the Parker property on June 4, 2004 for $500,000. Public meetings by demand, held on April 10, 2012 and June 23, 2012, were about the only headsup by which residents came to know that anything was going on in the municipal “back rooms.” Then Galway-Cavendish & Harvey Township passed an amendment to our Official Plan to allow Dewdney Mountain Farms to operate his mega quarry. Rescinding the amendment (which is entirely legal and possible), and going back to our Official Plan, will have the effect of negating this Quarry. We
have to demand that this happen as soon as possible. As complete a plebiscite as possible, by the property owners of Trent Lakes, stating that they were not informed of the application to change their Official Plan and that they demand the amendment be rescinded, would suffice to get us back on track as a recreational-retirement community concentrating on environmentally conducive activities and businesses that enhance our Municipality and those surrounding us. Thanks to the firefighters
Wanted to take a moment to commend the volunteers from the Kawartha and Trent Lakes Fire Fighters. Last Thursday evening one of the trailers in our park (Bell Haven) caught fire and was completely destroyed together with three others that were damaged. The response to a 911 call was within minutes and the professionalism and organization of the volunteers was a sight to behold. They managed to keep the situation under control and prevented the fire from spreading further, which could have been a severe disaster. I extend my thanks, gratitude, respect and admiration to each and every one of them for a job well done. Linda Munro Bell Haven Trailer Park, County Road 36

Union calls for province to restore long-term-care hours
Frontline care-home workers came out in force in Lindsay Tuesday July 21—along with some of their union leaders—to protest cuts to hours of care for residents in long-term-care facilities. The rally, which drew well over 100 participants, was held outside Frost Manor. Beginning in August, residents in the longterm-care facility will receive a total of 37.5 fewer hours of care every week. While to the uninitiated, this may not seem like a major cut, said Fred Hahn, president on the Ontario division of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE), it comes on top of the loss of 56 personal support hours weekly last year. Each cut means less time spent with residents All-Stars Realty Inc., Brokerage Independently Owned and Operated

who may need help in eating, bathing, dressing, using the toilet or even just getting out of bed, he said. It also means more stress on the workers, who often go into this line of work because they want to help people. “People do this work not to get rich, but to care for seniors.” Before the era of Premier Mike Harris, said Hahn, there was a guaranteed minimum standard of four hours per day of care for each resident in long-term-care facilities across the province. Now that the hours are no longer legislated, the average has dropped to barely over two hours per day. Since 1992, the complexity of needs has increased significantly for Ontario’s long-term-care residents. The majority of residents are 85 years of age or older, and 73 per cent have some form of Alzheimer’s or dementia. CUPE wants Frost Manor to restore care hours for its frail and elderly residents, and to join the union and others in pushing for a return to a provincially mandated minimum care standard of four hours per resident each day. Without a legislated standard, he said, the owners of private facilities across the province make decisions on care based on their financial bottom line, said Hahn. “We think those decisions should be based on what people need.” For more information, or to support the push for a return to legislated care hours, visit www. timetocareontario.ca

Crowds and choristers as OMB hearing set over to August 18
Ontario Municipal Board hearings into rezoning to allow a 432-acre quarry in Trent Lakes reconvened July 25—only to be immediately postponed to August 18. Colin Hefferon, the OMB hearing officer, agreed with opponents of the quarry who asked for time to have their experts review additional reports prepared by the developers. The reports, only received that week, were to address questions of noise, dust and damage to habitat of the blandings turtle, listed as threatened under the Endangered Species Act. “I would like to do this one right,” said Hefferon, as he set a date for the hearings to reconvene August
18 and 19, beginning at 10 am, and again at the Trent Lakes municipal offices. The proposed development—the Dewdney Mountain Farms Quarry—would be a 432-acre (that’s about 327 football fields), Class A, Category 4 quarry off Ledge Road, which runs north off Quarry Road, about 10 km east of Bobcaygeon. Opponents are asking the OMB to deny the amendment to the township’s official plan that would allow the quarry to go ahead. The proposed development, according to Citizens for Responsible Aggregate Development (CFRAD), would be one of 19 limestone quarries in an area north of County Road 36 between Buckhorn and Bobcaygeon. Nearly 200 local residents and cottagers filled (and spilled outside) the packed council chambers. Under blue skies, a small choir sang the plaintive Irish air, The Water Is Wide, but with new—and pointed—lyrics: “Another quarry is not what we need We’d like to save the earth from greed We need clean air, and animals too Not more scarred land, for us to view.” The determined opposition to the quarry continues as CFRAD presents Limestone Blues, a fund-raising evening of music and verse, August 23 at 7 pm at Murphy’s Barn, Kawartha Settlers’ Village. Featured performers include: Trent Lakes resident George Hewison, founder and lead singer in the Rank n File band; Guelph singer-songwriter Sue Smith, recipient of Guelph’s 2013 Woman of Distinction Award in Arts and Culture; and Irishborn spoken-word artist Jonathan Lynn, now living in Trent Lakes, founder of the Irish traditional group Tip Splinter. There will be nibblies, a silent auction and a cash bar. Tickets are available at Kawartha Coffee and the Village Florist, or call Line Pinard (705-7380032) or John Main (705-738-4196). Suggested donation is $25.

Birth of the Kawartha Lakes Arts Council
Creative Kawarthans from the visual arts, performing arts, artisan groups and literary organizations have come together to establish an arts council for the City of Kawartha Lakes. They’re now looking for members of arts organizations from throughout the CKL area to join the discussion and join the inaugural board of directors. Membership will be open to all artists and arts groups in the city once incorporation is complete. The soon-to-be Arts Council will next meet at 10 am on Thursday, August 7 in the Economic Development Boardroom at 180 Kent St. W. CKL council adopted a Cultural Master Plan last year, with a key recommendation to establish a governance body to unite the arts sector and act as an umbrella for the city’s many artsrelated groups. The plan is intended to foster the growth of arts and cultural assets, expand professional opportunities and strengthen cultural tourism in Kawartha Lakes. Arts Councils around the province play a vital role as advocates and coordinating bodies for the arts in their communities. The city’s Arts, Culture and Heritage Development Officer from the Economic Development Department is helping the group establish itself as a formal not-forprofit organization. and help break the cycle of homelessness. All routes are well marked with rest stops providing refreshments and roving support vehicles for first-aid and mechanical help. They are designed to allow riders to make mid-course decisions on distance as the day progresses. The 13 km route is ideal for families and is an out-and-back ride on the hard packed Victoria Rail Trail (suitable for all bikes) out of Fenelon Falls along the shore of Cameron Lake. The 25 km route also follows the rail trail out of Fenelon Falls continuing on paved roads before returning on the rail trail. The 50/100/160km rides all follow the 50km route with additional loops to reach the longer distances. All rides return via the hard packed Victoria Rail Trail. Start time for the 100/160 km. route is 8 am. Start time for the 13/25/50 km routes is 9:30 am.
Meeting finds pluses and minuses in Bobcaygeon Bikefest
While most of the business owners who packed a postBikefest meeting at the Bobcaygeon Service Centre July 24 to consider its future, favoured continuing the event, some raised concerns. On the plus side, attendees reported that about 14,600 people attended the third annual Bikefest, accommodations were booked far in advance, restaurants were packed, and many shopkeepers experienced return business. Responding to concerns about “wild bikers,” police representatives noted they received no increase in calls related to the event. Organizers emphasized its family-friendly nature, with no beer tent, for example, and a Sunday scheduling. The related Saturday poker run was not centred on the village at all, but took place throughout the region. Some felt the event is now too large for Bobcaygeon and objected to the street closures. They said Bikefest should be moved to a field outside of town, but others argued that doing so would defeat the purpose of bringing business to town. Organizers promised that a problem some local employees experienced of being denied access to their places of work because of street closures would be fixed for next year. They noted that they have to apply for a municipal events permit for any event expecting
over 2,500 people, and that while outside vendors are charged a fee to sell their wares at Bikefest, CKL business do not have to pay a fee. Lance Sherk, director of Economic Development for The City of Kawartha Lakes, chaired the meeting.
Bobcaygeon Food Bank crisis may lead to closure
After 20-plus years of service and with a client list of more than 400 people, the Bobcaygeon Helps Food Bank may actually have to close its doors, says the organization’s volunteer president Sue McGill. The food bank is facing two serious crises at once: The long-serving president, general manager, and board chair are all having to step down from their volunteer positions due to age-related health and personal challenges. And the stock of food is at an all-time low, as both food and monetary donations continue to decline. That’s never happened before, says McGill. And sadly, it comes at a time when the need is greater than ever, with many significant increases in the cost of food and other necessities like electricity, heating fuel and gasoline. That has not only hit clients hard, but has also cut into the discretionary income of potential donors. McGill recalls one woman she met who found herself reduced to one tea bag per week, which she

had to use over and over. The food bank board will hold an emergency meeting later this month to consider how to respond to the crises. In the meantime, McGill is appealing to the community for help—both for people to volunteer their time to share the burden of looking after the bank, and for food and monetary donations. Amazingly, the food bank, which already has more than 90 volunteers, still needs folks to take over leading roles. The Bobcaygeon Helps Food Bank got its start more than 20 years ago, when the minister at the Anglican Church began keeping extra food in a cupboard for those in need. As the need increased, the local ministerial association took over the food bank and it moved into renovated space in the basement of the church hall. Eventually it was incorporated as a separate organization with its own board of directors and charitable status. Part of the challenge of recruitment, says McGill, is that board members must be members of one of the local churches in the village. She favours opening it up to everyone, and putting a fixed term on board positions so the implications of volunteering are less overwhelming. More than 400 clients—all of whom have used the food bank this year—is “a huge number for a community of this size,” McGill says. The official catchment area for the food bank extends beyond the village limits, to Burnt River in the north, Tates Bay in the east, Lakeview Estates in the south and Stinson’s Bay Road in the west. Users must register, can only use the food bank once every three weeks, and must commit not to double-dip by utilizing other area food banks (with the aim of spreading limited resources among as many needy people as possible). Folks who rely on the food bank include seniors and people with disabilities, she says. Some are couples who find they can’t support their families on minimum-wage incomes. Others on fixed incomes are being left behind by cost of living jumps. Fully 32 percent of those who
benefit from the program are actually children aged 15 and under. The organization also runs a Christmas hamper program and this year started the Kids Zone program with the aim of providing five prepared lunches a week for school-aged children. Food may be donated at ValuMart, Foodland, any of the Bobcaygeon churches, or at the Food Bank itself on Wednesday mornings between 9:30 and 10:30. Monetary donations may be taken to the churches or
mailed to: Bobcaygeon Helps, P O Box 133, Bobcaygeon ON K0M 1A0. Donations of $10 or more will receive a tax receipt. For more information, or to volunteer, contact the food bank at: 705-886-9425 or bobcaygeonhelps@gmail.com. The Bobcaygeon Helps Food Bank is located in Christ Church Anglican, at the corner of Sherwood and Park Streets, with the entrance off Park Street. It is open for food distribution Tuesdays and Fridays from 2 to 4 pm.

and opportunities in their own community, and to brainstorm potential solutions. It’s a chance to be part of shaping your community’s design standards. The walking audit starts at the Coboconk Train Station at 3 pm, and runs till 5 pm. A workshop will follow from 7-9 pm. The evening workshop will provide an overview of the Community Design Standards project, and the importance of having design standards. It will also report back on the key findings from the afternoon audit and give residents a chance to share their ideas for what will
create vibrant communities in CKL. Facilitated by lead consultant Robert Voigt, the Walking Audit and Workshop are part of the CKL’s Design Kawartha Lakes project to implement design standards for effective, sustainable development that fits each community’s character and personality. The Design Kawartha Lakes project starts with existing policy from the Official Plan and Secondary Plans that supports healthy, economically vibrant and livable downtowns, neighborhoods and business districts. It works with local participants to create tangible guidelines for how this policy can be implemented on the ground in new and re-development. Ric McGee hired as CAO of Deep River
City of Kawartha Lakes Mayor Ric McGee is moving to Deep River, Ontario, in the Ottawa valley to become that municipality’s new Chief Administrative Officer/Clerk. McGee’s announcement put paid to ongoing speculation about whether he might change his mind and decide to run again for the CKL mayor’s position. “My wife Caroline and I came to the conclusion three years ago
that I would not seek re-election,” he said. While he had planned to take time away with his family in 2015, “the chance to work with the council, staff and residents in the Town of Deep River was an opportunity I could not resist.” The mayor said he will serve out his term until this council’s mandate expires on November 30, and will attend council meetings and continue to work closely with staff and council. “I am very proud of the progress that council and staff have made in many areas to work with and better
serve the residents of Kawartha Lakes,” said McGee. “While there is always more work to be done, I am confident this council and staff have taken colossal steps forward to make Kawartha Lakes a top performing organization. He emphasized his pride in the city’s new Initiative Management Program. “The certification of our Lean Six Sigma Black Belts has been the icing on the cake.” McGee added that he will continue to work with the city’s deputy mayors until his term ends. Under the terms of a bylaw adopted by council in 2013, Councillor Brian Junkin will serve as deputy mayor during August and September, and Councillor Emmett Yeo will take over for October and November. McGee thanked council, staff and the residents of Kawartha Lakes foran“outpouringofcongratulations and support as I undertake my new responsibilities.”

Hired as the Manager of Social Services for the City in 2006, Rod had responsibility for Ontario Works, Children’s Services, and Homelessness Services as well as a number of initiatives including the Poverty Reduction Strategy. Craig Shanks also moves from an acting position to a permanent appointment, in this case as Director of Community Services. He has been the Manager of Parks, Recreation and Culture for the City of Kawartha Lakes since the City’s inception in 2001, and worked for the Town of Lindsay before that. He also served as Director of Recreation for the small, Inuit community of Arctic Bay, in the northwest corner of Baffin Island.

Roots & Ramblings Thanks for the (garden tour) memories
The organizers of the 18th Annual Garden Tour, Tea and Market, a project of the Bobcaygeon and District Horticultural Society, wish to thank our generous supporters. First of all, Kawartha Settlers’ Village, enhanced with the music of Sean Whalen, was the ideal venue for our tea and market. We are so appreciative of the 10 vendors who offered unique products for sale in that lovely setting. Village merchants once again displayed small town spirit, helping with supplies, delicious food donations and luncheon discounts, door prizes, plants, advertising costs. We’re very pleased with our new, in-your-face roadside signs, too. Look for them next year. Thanks to those who helped us purchase them. And finally, we tip our caps to the stars of the show, our wonderful garden owners: Mary James, Olive Collins, El March and Rox Ann Miller, Jean and Jerry McAllister, Moira and Roger Ashbury, Linda and Ernie Popiel. After a year of planning and months of hard work, you can now relax in your lovely gardens. The horticultural society is now in the planning stage for 2015. If you would like to nominate a local garden, contact us through our web site: www. bobcaygeonhorticulture.com. Finally, please support our local merchants. They
make our small town a great place in which to live— and garden.

Fenelon Falls Something for everyone as Fenelon’s 126-year fair tradition continues: Excitement is building towards the 2014 the Fenelon Fair, August 8-10, and organizers are confident visitors will have a great time all weekend long. For 126 years now the annual fair has brought agriculture, tradition and entertainment together to create a family-style event that appeals to both young and old. “We have many families from the community who can boast three or more generations of continued involvement in one way or another,” says Board member John Lester. “It’s truly a familystyle fair built on tradition”.
The 2014 Fenelon Fair will open Friday August 8 at 4 pm. “Friday night is always a great kickoff to the fair, with particular interest in the Truck and Farm Tractor Pull because of so many local area farm competitors. Some locals make this their only pulling venture of the year,” said Lester. Fair directors are also pleased to welcome the Gable Brothers Midway for the first time at Fenelon Fair. They have an excellent reputation in the business, and will bring at least six kiddie rides and six adult rides, plus food and games. Saturday’s program will feature many of the elements that have made the Fair a tradition from the start, including: Cattle Shows, Goats, Homecraft and Agricultural Exhibits, Midway, Children’s Activities, and Country Music with John Lester & Friends. Saturday afternoon will feature the Lawn and ATV Pull on the main track, and the evening will

Pickleball ‘gives back’ in Fenelon Falls
By Jane Andrew
The Fenelon Falls Pickleball Association capped a successful launch year by presenting a $300 bursary to graduating Fenelon Falls Secondary School student Julia Marshall. Club ambassadors, Donna and Alfie Peneycad made the presentation in late June. The bursary was awarded to a student who has chosen to continue studies in the field of kinesiology and was selected by the teachers at FFSS. It has been a year of “giving back” for the successful new group, which already has 120 people on its mailing list and 50 regular players. At Christmas the association also donated $300 to the Fenelon Falls Salvation Army food bank. In August, we are proud to sponsor two of our players, John Dragstra and Continued on page 30

Blue Oak Gallery offers a lifetime’s collection of antiques and art Gary Sedore, owner and entrepreneur behind the new Blue Oak Gallery at 14 Francis St. E. in Fenelon Falls, comes by his passion for antiques honestly. Descended from the one recorded ancestor named Sedore to come to North America (New York in 1755), Gary also spent most of his life in a century farmhouse that had been in the family for five generations. Surrounded by history— “my family never threw anything away”—he spent a lifetime collecting jewelry, paintings, fine china, and glassware, including Moser, Murano, Stevens and Williams and Moorecroft glass. Now, after two-years of totally rebuilding an old garage that was in terrible shape when he bought it, Gary has an fine, large and bright gallery space to showcase his eclectic collection, as well as to display the works of local current artists like Norman Craig, Thelma Sellers, Sandra Ackert and Len Harfield. There’s more. He’s also constructing a group of five small boutique spaces next door, where local
artists will be able to both work and showcase their art. “This is my passion,” says Gary, beaming like a proud parent as he sits amongst his collection. “I want to go like a bat out of hell till I drop dead.” It’s also his passion to provide a welcoming space, with free tea and biscuits and a piano for those who like to make music, for folks to just drop in, to visit and to enjoy his collection. And he won’t mind if they buy something, of course—but no pressure. There’s no telling what you’ll find in Gary’s large gallery, from a beautiful silver samovar, to shriner’s fezzes, to Victorian period furniture, vintage ladies’ clothing and even books on building your own model steam engine. He also has a fascinating collection of the late John Blanchard’s paintings of early Ontario farm life. The Blue Oak Gallery opened informally at the beginning of July, but the official “grand opening” is set for Saturday August 9, 10 am to 5 pm. He’s open for business—and visiting—from Friday till Wednesday. Gary’s pride and joy is also hosting the beginnings of a farmers market for Fenelon Falls this summer—every Wednesday afternoon. So be sure to drop in, for antiques and art, for tea and chat, or for fresh local produce.

It’s a family affair at Pedestal Insurance
Nearly three years after opening Pedestal Insurance Brokers Inc. at 48 Colborne St. in Fenelon Falls, Scott Woolfrey can now claim to be the only brokerage in the community that is owned and operated by someone who actually resides in the village. That means personal service, Scott explains. “When someone needs help, say after a fire or an accident, and they call our number—I’ll be the one on the other end of the phone. No matter what time of day or night.” Scott says he chose the name Pedestal for the brokerage because “it symbolizes strength and stability.” Pedestal’s big news right now is the addition of farm coverage to the regular roster, the result of a new appointment by Peel Mutual Insurance Company (PMI) of Brampton. “Farm insurance is where Peel Mutual started in 1876,” says PMI

President John Lockwood. Farmers started the company as a “mutual” venture to help one another out. PMI’s agreement with Pedestal Insurance represents a move into eastern Ontario for the company, but a continuation of the same com-
munity and family values that are part of our roots, explains Lockwood. “I think we’ve got a great partner in Pedestal; there’s a lot of simpatico between the two companies.” “Insurance is in our blood,” says Scott, who has lived in Fenelon Falls for more than 18 years. He worked in his father Glenn’s insurance

business in Mississauga before launching Pedestal in December 2011. Now both Glenn and his wife, Lou, are working for Scott. Lou is the office manager/receptionist, and Glenn concentrates on life and travel insurance, financial advice and retirement funds. Scott specializes in general coverage (cars, homes, recreational vehicles) and commercial insurance for local businesses. “We complement each other,” he says, “Together—and with the addition of farm coverage—we can now offer one-stop shopping.” All told, father and son have nearly 70 years experience in the business. There is an easy and caring rapport between Scott, Glenn and Lou that’s a pleasure to watch. “We started with zero clients, and built this business from the ground up,” says Scott, with a note of pride. That’s unheard of in the insurance business, where it’s more common to launch by purchasing an already existing brokerage.

Impact 32 Boat rally: Have fun and support new docks
Got friends and family who like to boat? Do you have a competitive streak? Get together a team to enter the second annual Bobcaygeon Boat Rally on Sturgeon Lake on Saturday, August 23, and you can have fun while also fundraising to
build another 200 feet of docking and revitalize surrounding parkland in downtown Bobcaygeon. The more the merrier, as teammates help one another solve clues and complete tasks to earn points in the rally. More points mean better chances to win prizes. And of course, they can also help gather entrance fee pledges. Teams need to fundraise $500 to cover the entry fee to participate in the rally, to get their company or team name on a boat and banner

in the program, and to join in a complementary breakfast, lunch and a shore-party dance. Impact 32, a committee of the Bobcaygeon and Area Chamber of Commerce, organizes the rally and other fund-raising events to revitalize Lock 32 (the first and busiest lock on the Trent-Severn Waterway) and drive tourism and economic development. In 2013, the group raised enough money to build 180 feet of docks, with power and water hookups. Besides the boat rally, Impact 32 is also sponsoring two Country 105 dances at the Bobcaygeon Arena (August 9 and November 29). Each year, recreational fishing and land and boating tourism generated nearly $500 million in economic activity along the TSW, and Bobcaygeon is a major gateway for more than 450,000 campers visiting Balsam Lake and Emily Provincial parks. The Federal Deficit Reduction Action Plan, and resulting service cuts and lack of investment in infrastructure along the waterway, has hurt the TSW and all the communities that rely on its HELP GROW OURand cultural economic, social DOCKS & PARKS aspects. Impact 32 says the entire region benefits from its efforts, including local businesses in the tourism, marine, restaurant and retail sectors; residents who work in those sectors and use the TSW recreationally; cottage associations, cultural and heritage organizations; and the federal, provincial and local governments and organisations that rely on tax revenue. Choristers Corner Meet some of our singers
By April Scott
Here is a smattering of interesting people who help to make up the core of the Bobcaygeon Choristers. They’re in no particular order, just the way they came out of the folder. Don’t forget to like us on Facebook. Caroline Eden is our communicator. She emails: music for rehearsals, times and dates for practices and performances, upcoming social events, etc. A reflexologist, she has been in Bobcaygeon for 11 years. Caroline loves gardening

and belongs to the Horticultural Society, helping tend some of the beautiful garden beds in town. She belongs to Victoria Quilts, which makes lovely quilts for cancer patients. As a survivor, I received one of these. An alto, Caroline loves to sing, and enjoys the camaraderie of the choristers. Mary James is a soprano and one of our original singers. When George Hedge started the choir he said he would place her in the tenor section because he didn’t have any tenors. Mary kindly hosted Christmas parties in her home until the choir and the spouses became too numerous to accommodate. Belonging to the choir brings great joy to Mary and I quote “such a wonderful group of people who all love to sing. An added plus, our leaders know and accept that many of us do not have formal music education.” Mary’s garden was also on the recent Garden Tour. Julie Fulford, also a soprano, has a wonderful B&B (Windsong by the lake) right on the water at Perfectus Point. Julie and Steve bought the property as a transition to retirement from Peterorough. Julie also works part time as a career coach , and they make their own maple syrup in their sugar shack and Julie has a stain glass studio. She belongs to a yoga group who also walk, snowshoe and kayak together. Word has it that she is an excellent cook into the bargain. There is nothing Julie can’t do. Graham Keevill has one of the deepest bass voices I’ve ever heard. He retired from I.B.M. and is a busy guy in Bobcaygeon. He is on the board of the Choristers, and is treasurer for The Bobcaygeon Music Council, Environmental Action Bobcaygeon and Mens Breakfast, Trinity Church. “Too old to do much else,” he declares. You will also see him in the church choir, down at the Thursday night concerts and on the curling rink. Ruth Belbeck has a lovely soprano voice and is an artist in her own right. She has worked for the past 45 years as a teacher and artist in Bobcaygeon. During the month of July her works were on display in the Bobcaygeon Library. Ruth has three grandsons and three granddaughters to keep her busy, and also loves to cook, write, tackle jigsaws and crochet.

As gold medal winners in the district play downs, they will represent our district (see http://www. ontario55plussummergames.com/ sports-list/). Fenelon Pickleball is on summer break but starts up again on Tuesday, September 2 (7-9 pm Fenelon Falls Community Centre) for intermediate (plus) players and September 5 for all levels (9 am – noon), Fenelon Falls Community Centre). DEVELOPMENT CHARGE HIKES WOULD SLOW GROWTH The Fenelon Falls and District Chamber of Commerce is asking the CKL to take more time to consider a proposed new bylaw before raising development charges on a single-family home from the current $6,024 to $27,500. The proposed increase “will have a serious negative impact on housing starts within the community of the greater Fenelon Falls neighbourhoods,” says the chamber in a written submission to the City of Kawartha Lakes. “The current plans of developers are based on attracting customers at a certain price range. The proposed new fees would negate the current plans and possibly stop the investment in our community.” Development charges are normally levied against new developments to help a municipality pay for the costs of providing increased infrastructure (roads, water, sewage treatment, garbage collection, policing, libraries, etc.). Without such a charge, the cost of extending those services would fall directly on current taxpayers and ratepayers. The city is under the gun to pass a new bylaw before September 9, when the current development charges bylaw expires. If a new one is not in place by then the city will not be able to levy development charges against builders. But the Chamber of Commerce says there is not enough time between now and September 9 to adequately debate the proposed bylaw. “We would encourage this council to pass a bylaw that satisfies the requirement to keep a DC bylaw in place but that does it in a manner that will not negatively impact current development plans,” it suggests. “The background study is valid for one year and that gives council the time to fully debate the issues around the new DC bylaw.” The province requires
each municipality to do a major background study before introducing a new development charges bylaw. The proposed bylaw is contained within the background study, completed by the city’s Adam Found. The chamber said Fenelon Falls has had several large development plans in the works for a number of years that couldn’t go ahead due to lack of infrastructure. “Now, on the very eve of
being able to go ahead they are struck with a 450 percent increase in DCs.” It admitted that current development charges are artificially low, partly duand proposed a sliding scale of increases to development charges over five years so developers could continue with current plans. City staff will the next version of the bylaw to the August 12 council meeting.

Two-year-old Sophie Dinsdale (pictured last Christmas) is undergoing treatment for cancer, and her church community has organized an August 17 fundraiser to help the family.
Support two-year-old Sophie’s fight against cancer
As two-year-old Sophie Dinsdale continues to
struggle with cancer, her Bobcaygeon church community has come together to organize a fundraiser to help Sophie and her mother, Leslie. Sophie has just had 14 tumours removed from both her kidneys and is now in the midst of ongoing radiation and chemotherapy. “She is a spunky two year old who is fighting for all her worth to beat this terrible disease,” says Yvonne Kendrick, pastor at Lakes Community Church, which is organizing the fundraiser. This is “not what a little princess should be enduring.” Several musical acts will perform at the outdoor concert, Sunday, August 17 at 6 pm at Lakes Community Church, Bobcaygeon. Refreshments will be available and a donation of $5 will be taken at the gate. There will be fun for the kids and lots of activities. Folks have already raised $3,500, “thanks to the Kawartha Charity Riders at the Bikefest,” says Ms. Kendrick, “but we want to be able to help them even more.” Sophie’s mother, Leslie, is a single parent, and a nurse, who has had to take time off from her job to care for her daughter. They are members of the Lakes church, and Sophie has been attending the play group. For more information: 705-731-0247 or 705738-5524

It means that when seniors require assistance in order to remain living happily and healthily in their own homes, or when individuals who are bereaved or grieving are looking for help from our hospice services, the agency will be able to respond. Tag Days would not be possible without time generously given by dozens of volunteers, and by the many local businesses who allow the agency to set up outside their establishments to greet members of the public and thank them for their support. Safely share space with bears
Bear problems usually start with the nose. Bears have a keen sense of smell and will follow their noses to any potential meal—as they work to bulk up for hibernation. The Ministry of Natural Resources is offering three fact sheets on how to safely co-exist with bears in cottage country—which of course, was their country first, and still is. The fact sheets aim to help cottagers, campers and anyone walking in the woods to safely avoid dangerous encounters with bears. Here are a few of their recommendations, many of which apply to all three activities: • All odours attract bears. Keep the area around you clean and odour free.Keep both food and garbage in containers with tight-fitting lids, and
take garbage to an approved waste disposal site. Cottagers should use bear-resistant containers for garbage, and campers should hang both food and garbage in trees away from the campsite. Do not stockpile garbage. Take it to an approved waste disposal site regularly. • Never feed bears (or other wildlife) or try to approach them. • Always keep an eye on children in bear country. Teach them about bears; to never approach a bear or other animals; to never run from a bear and; if they see a bear, to stay calm and call for help. Make sure an adult is always nearby • Keep dogs controlled. A bear may follow a dog back to its owner. • Encourage everyone to practise Bear Wise habits. • Consider having a whistle, air horn, long-handled axe or bear spray on hand. If you bring bear spray, know how to use it. • Make noise as you move through wooded areas, especially where background noise is high, such as near streams and waterfalls. Singing, whistling or talking will alert bears to your presence, giving them a chance to avoid you. • Travel with others if possible. • Be aware of your surroundings: Do not wear headphones in the bush. • Keep an eye out for signs of bears, such as tracks, claw marks on trees, flipped-over rocks or fresh bear droppings.

If berry picking, occasionally scan your surroundings to check for bears, and rise slowly from your crouched position so you don’t startle any nearby bears. They may not recognize you as a human when you are in a crouched position. Cottagers additionally should keep the following in mind: • Fill bird feeders only through the winter months. • Keep meat scraps in the freezer until garbage day, and remove grease and food residue from barbecue grills, including the grease trap, after each use. • Do not put meat, fish or sweet food (including fruit) in your composter. Pick all ripe fruit off trees, and remove vegetables and fallen fruit from the ground. • If you rent your cottage, tell your tenants the importance of being Bear Wise, and make these tips available. Visit Ontario.ca/bearwise for more information on bears. If you would like to report a bear problem, call 866 514-2327. If your personal safety is at risk, call 911 or the local police.
Telecare Lindsay seeks volunteers to ‘Shift the Lens’
United Way CKL’s 2014 campaign co-chairs show commitment and artistic flair
Globus Theatre’s Artistic Director Sara Quick and long-time municipal recreation staffer Robin Nisbet are the new campaign co-chairs for the United Way for the City of Kawartha Lakes in 2014/2015. The United Way made the announcement at the Lakeview Arts Barn—home of Globus Theatre—on Thursday, July 24 prior to that evening’s performance. Sarah and Robin will help the campaign team continue the mission of building strong and healthy communities. Both see the need for the collaborative strength of the funded agencies, community partnerships and special programs initiated by United Way to help address systemic issues such as poverty and safe housing. Writer, director and actor Sarah Quick hails from Manchester, England. In 1999, she formed Quick Change Theatre and toured throughout Canada, Ireland, England, the U.S. and Australia with her self-penned works including “Do

Good news: Our beaches are open (mostly)
As August began, all but two of the public beaches in the City of Kawartha Lakes were open for swimming, according to the Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ridge District Health Unit. Only the Coboconk Lions Park Beach and the Omemee Beach were “posted,” indicating that bacterial levels in the water are higher than is considered acceptable by the Ontario government’s Beach Management Protocol. That means they are considered unsafe for bathing. All the rest of the 21 public beaches in the city are considered safe by the health unit, as their bacterial levels fall below government limits. Public beaches are posted when the water contains high levels of bacteria (germs) called Escherichia coli (E.coli). High amounts of E.coli in the water indicates the presence of more serious, illness-causing organisms. Problems can range from minor eye, skin, ear, nose and throat infections to more serious illnesses such as gastrointestinal sickness. The Health Unit’s report is based on the most recent test results from the provincial lab in Peterborough for water samples taken from these beaches. Sometimes a beach will be posted due to other environmental contaminants that could affect the health and safety of bathers, including: floating garbage, oils, scum, excessive weed growth, algae blooms, bad odours, or murky water. You can call the Health Unit toll-free at 1-866-888-4577 or check the website at http://www.hkpr.on.ca/InfoSet/Environments/ BeachWaterTesting.aspx for the latest results on all beaches within the district.

Leo (July 24 to Aug. 23) Good for you, Leo! You know what you want, even though others may try to persuade you to take a different direction. Keep the strength! Virgo (Aug. 24 to Sept. 23) Learn to not take things personally, dear Virgo. Many times people say and do things that are only real in their own minds—and you can make yourself immune to their opinions and actions, if they are harmful to you. Libra (Sept. 24 to Oct. 23) ven as you confront the unknown, Libra, we sense your confidence and the ripples it sends to those around you. You are a strong influence right now on those who depend on you.
Aquarius (Jan. 21 to Feb. 19) A letter in the mail will pique your curiosity during this phase, Aquarius. Treat it lightly and have fun with it! Pisces (Feb. 20 to March 20) In relationships Pisces, you are more likely to give without expecting much in return. In a partner, you are more likely to be attracted to the mind and spirit rather than physical beauty. These are both good traits and lucky will be the person who finds you! Aries (March 21 to April 20) “Try to be a rainbow in someone’s cloud”—Maya Angelou. There you have it, Aries. The recipe you’ve been looking for to brighten your day. Try brightening someone else’s and watch what happens.
Scorpio (Oct. 24 to Nov. 22) Discover friendship with people who share your interests and views, Scorpio. Sometimes we forget this basic principle and strive to be friends to all people. It’s not possible, simple as that.
Taurus (April 21 to May 21) Sometimes, Taurus, it’s easier to find a solution to a problem when you are not thinking about one. Instead of struggling on and on, focus your energy on something unrelated. It can ease your mind and revitalize your perspective. And bingo, the answer jumps into your head!
Sagittarius (Nov. 23 to Dec. 21) You must let go of the past and trust in the future, dear Sag. The past cannot be changed, but it can fade away and change in meaning if you want it to. Your experience of the past can change. It certainly does not predict your future.
Gemini (May 22 to June 22) When it comes to love, Gemini, you are compatible with those who belong to the Libra, Aquarius, Virgo and Pisces signs. We think this is a good time to step forward and make your intentions known. Just sayin’!
Capricorn (Dec. 22 to Jan. 20) Take a break, Capricorn! You’ve been working hard, planning vacations, and doing things to please others! Now is the time to relax and do what you want to do. Why not take in the Perseid meteor shower which reaches its peak Aug. 12?
Cancer (June 23 to July 23) Often it is easier to avoid life’s problems than to face them. Have you done this, Cancer? Some problems do vanish when you ignore them, but most just get bigger. Don’t let yours!

Open houses address healthy lakes and watersheds in CKL
Kawartha Conservation (KC) is offering local open houses on protecting lake and watershed health. The events will feature lake management planning for Balsam, Cameron, Canal, and Mitchell lakes. Experts will also speak about managing fish populations, shoreline ecology, and other environmental issues critical to the area. The open houses are scheduled for Coboconk on August 10, Fenelon Falls on August 19, and Kirkfield on August 20. Kawartha Conservation has initiated or completed eight lake management plans within the city boundaries—with financial support from the city and input from dozens of stakeholders. KC researches and identifies issues that impact each lake, and creates an action plan to address the identified issues. The conservation group has already begun implementing those that are completed. “At the open houses, we want to highlight some of our research findings, and talk about how stewardship actions and other strategies are informed by the science,” said Rob Messervey, chief administrative officer for Kawartha Conservation. “We will also talk about how this will help sustain lake and watershed health and how to repair problem areas.” Here are the details about each of the open houses: Coboconk Open House and Balsam Lake Association Annual General Meeting Sunday, August 10 from 9 to 11 am (AGM from 9 to 9:30 am), at Coboconk Lions Hall.
