armest Wishes from our Home to Yours... A shiny new bike, an Easy Bake® oven, a table top hockey game, a talking-and-walking doll, a Monopoly® game, a pair of skates, a train set, a carpenter set, an Etch-a-Sketch®, a diamond ring, a fur coat…. These are some of the items that have been on Christmas lists over the years. Long before Christmas, children (and adults too!) begin to make a list of gifts that they believe will make them happier than anything else. When I was a child there was even a Santa Claus feature on CBC television that ran after dinner for a week or two before Christmas. I still remember the pledge we repeated with Santa. My naughty brother and I stood at attention and repeated: “I promise to be good in every way so that I can help make every day almost as happy as Christmas Day.” One year I asked for a Patta Burp® doll. After feeding my baby Patta, I would raise her to my shoulder, pat her back and out would rumble a burp. In reality it sounded more like a “moo” more than a “burp” but I wanted this doll more than anything. Early Christmas morning while mom and dad were still asleep, one of my three brothers tiptoed downstairs to spy on what Santa had left under the tree. Before long, he came back upstairs to report his findings. For some reason, Santa didn’t gift wrap all our toys. Sure enough, there was a box containing a Patta Burp® doll. These memories are almost 50 years old and I still remember them as if they were last year. I still have some of the gifts I received including my first doll, a charm bracelet, a well-worn teddy bear, an autograph book, a musical Raggedy Ann doll and Nancy Drew mysteries. These are just some of my happy memories, but Christmas isn’t always merry. Perhaps this Christmas is a challenge for you because something sad has happened to you this year. We have several pamphlets that may offer some support. Simply stop in or call the funeral home and we will gladly get one out to you. We are also good listeners. We invite you to come in for a mug of hot chocolate and a visit.

Waste of taxpayers’ money

I just read your issue of Nov 15 and an article on p. 8 left me in disbelief. It seems the City of Kawartha Lakes has a feral cat problem, so in 2010 a city task force was set up to come up with a solution. Three, I repeat, three, years later they have finished their work and will soon release a pamphlet on said

subject. Great work people. I would like one of our councillors, maybe the initiator of all this, Ward 8 Coun. Donna Villemaire, to tell me how many people were on this force. I presume they were paid for their efforts. Maybe they were councillors with spare time? How many hours did they spend on this achievement? At first read it seems a total waste of taxpayers’ money and typical of our governments at all levels. Just saying. Brian Gilbertson

Money Explained

Over the past 2000 years there have been hundreds of different fiat currencies, the average life span being 27 years. We have a fiat currency system. The US dollar and every currency that is valued against it has been running now for – well, the Federal Reserve just had its 100th birthday. That is a long time for a currency to function as this system has a built-in flaw that is known about and exploited by a few. It is time that we understood what exactly is going on here as we veer toward austerity measures and loss of services and adjustment that will not just be painful it will be excruciating. I will attempt to explain this through analogy. First we must remember the words of the famous economist John Kenneth Galbraith who said, “The ease with which banks make money is so simple the mind is repelled!” It is as follows, the banks take your deposits and money they borrow from the Central Bank, multiply that amount tenfold (fractional reserve banking), lend it out and charge a greater interest than they are paying and pocket the difference. Pretty slick huh? So where is the flaw you ask? Well I have come up with an analogy to give us a big picture view. I have stripped away all the divisions that cloud the issue so we can see the big picture. Money comes in two forms only, principal and interest whether it is coming in or going out. So, imagine all the principal in the world as a bathtub full of water. For every cup of water, we put in the bathtub, the bank takes a cup + a %. You can see at some point all the water (money) ends up in the bank and all the air (debt) is left in the public which is where we are now. The Velocity of Money M2 Chart shows that there is virtually zero velocity from the heady days of 2000 just in case you wondered why things seem a little slow right now. Steve Clarke

Gas tax revenue

The gas tax task force has been directed by council to enter into discussion with Community Care regarding an addendum to the current contract, with options and proposals for an enhanced volunteer driver/handi-ride program that would qualify for provincial gas tax funding to better serve the rural residents of Kawartha Lakes and to maximize revenue for the city. The task force is slated to report back to council by the end of January 2014.

back to staff on a proposed re-zoning application to allow a motor racing academy and facility in ward one. In particular, councillors want a noise study done. The proposed facility is at 228 Blanchard Rd. and staff were recommending approval of the rezoning. The property has had little activity over the last 10-plus years and has a ‘For Sale’ on it. Darryl Tighe, Landmark Assoc. Ltd., spoke on behalf of Peter Baldini at the meeting. He said the planned Motor Racing Academy and Facility is a members-only (100-500), exclusive club, which gives owners of high performance road-registered

Ashmore on police services board

Since Mayor Ric McGee resigned from the police services board, he recommended council appoint Ward 14 Coun. Ron Ashmore as his replacement. Initially there was some concern that other councillors were more experienced and should also be considered. Others quickly rose to Ashmore’s defense and he was subsequently approved. Ashmore

Recyclable transfer building off again

This initiative has had ahistory. In the beginning, it seemed a worthwhile project: recycling all blue box items from the city and an invite to outside municipalities to send their recyclables here for processing as well. Many councillors, led by Ward 13 Coun. Pat Warren, thought it was the right thing to do and a potential money-maker. However, it has now run into another roadblock. The Public Review Committee (PRC) has concerns about accepting recyclable materials from outside the city Warren so the project is again on hold.

Fire protection debated

In January, 2013, in an effort to reduce costs, council asked the budget advisory committee (BAC), in consultation with fire chief Mark Pankhurst to examine the cost benefits of moving all full-time firefighters to Lindsay on a one-year trial basis with Omemee and Bobcaygeon fire halls being covered by volunteer firefighters. Pankhurst told council a change, even on a shortterm basis, must be agreed upon by the Kawartha Lakes Professional Firefighters Association, Local 1701, as the collective agreement precludes fulltime firefighters from being replaced with volunteer firefighters and the clause would thwart consideration of replacement of full-time firefighters as an option.

He said there are ways to effectively mitigate noise through the use of berms (a hill or elevated rise to deflect noise). A local example of a berm would be on Hwy. 36 in Bobcaygeon which diminishes the road noise for the residents of Port 32. He recommended that noise level assessments be done prior to the approval of the re-zoning change.

Kennel bylaw amendments

John Bell, president of the Ontario Sporting Dog Association (OSDA), made a presentation to council about his association’s concerns with proposed changes to the city’s kennel bylaw. He said if the bylaw passes, more than half of the kennels in the city will not qualify for a kennel license. He added that after 16 months he finds little has been accomplished even though submissions from his organization have largely been ignored. The bylaw has been referred back to staff.

Pipe bomb suspect before courts

Car in river

BURNT RIVER - Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) continues to probe the circumstances surrounding a 51-year-old deceased man having driven a vehicle into the Burnt River the morning of Dec. 9 In a press release, the SIU said the Kawartha Lakes OPP received a call about 8:45 a.m. that led to officers being dispatched to the Burnt River, and that at some point a civilian vehicle went down a ramp and into the river at Cedar Plank Rd and Third Concession. The SIU assigned four investigators. Witnesses are asked to contact the lead investigator at 1-800787-8529 extension 9015.

They idea bombed

FENELON FALLS - A second bridge, and bicycle lanes and stands close to Water St., were just two ideas that came out of an ‘idea bombing’ session in Fenelon Falls Dec. 3 . The event was hosted by consultant Robert Voight, who is working with the Business Retention and Expansion (BR+E) group on a downtown streetscape project. About 25 people attended with talk of what to do with the old arena, expanded walking trails and better north-south links in

LINDSAY – Police have now announced a full slate of charges in connection with a suspected pipe bomb in Lindsay in late November. They said that Alan John Walsh, 37, of Lindsay has been charged with Possessing an Explosive Substance for an Unlawful Purpose; Possession of an Explosive Device with an Intent to Endanger Life; Possession of Incendiary Material; Possession of a Weapon for a Purpose Dangerous to the Public Peace; Mischief Endangering Life and Possession of an Explosive Substance while Prohibited Police made an arrest Dec. 3 after executing a search warrant at a William St. home where they seized a number of items. The service wanted to thank the public for its support and information. On Nov. 30, the OPP’s Explosives Disposal Unit executed a controlled detonation of a suspicious package they said was a pipe bomb-type device behind the Friendly Restaurant in downtown Lindsay. Police had to evacuate neighbouring residences and businesses.

Radioactive material

LINDSAY – Firefighters and police are still seeking information about possible radioactive material after being contacted by a woman Nov. 30, who was seeking advice on how to dispose of a glass container

labeled “85% Uranium” with an orange powdered substance inside. Police said the woman’s grandfather had apparently worked in a Kirkland Lake area mine and that is believed to be where the substance originated. The container and powder had been stored in a barn for approximately 40 years. Police and fire consulted the Ministry of the Environment’s “spills reporting center” as well as a private company that specializes in the disposal of hazardous waste and the woman was given advice about how to properly dispose of the material.

But police said that she left the station without leaving any contact information and they are interested in following up with her. If anyone has information, they are asked to contact police or fire. They said the substance does not pose any threat to public safety but they would like to ensure that it is properly disposed of.

Weapon used in domestic

FENELON FALLS - On Dec. 2, the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a domesticrelated incident that involved the use of a weapon in the Fenelon Falls area. Police said that upon arrival on scene, officers determined that there was not a public safety concern. A short time later a male suspect was arrested and being held for a bail hearing. The OPP used its Emergency Response Team (ERT) members and the K-9 unit to locate the weapon. Police said that to protect the integrity of an ongoing investigation no further details would be provided.

Ratepayers to OMB over quarry

TRENT LAKES – The North Pigeon Lake Ratepayers’ Association took their case over the Dewdney Mountain Quarry to the OMB Dec. 5 . There was a pre-hearing followed by a hearing at the Trent Lakes Township offices that day. The group is still accepting contributions at the Bank of Montreal in Bobcaygeon.

NEW AND EXTRA SPECIAL AT THE ROSEDALE MOTEL The Rosedale Motel is under new ownership with big plans for the future. Owner Darlene Sayers took over the motel, which is on Hwy. 35 N. next to the Kawartha Lakes Trading Post, last June. Darlene’s sister, Dianna, also lives at the motel and helps with the daily operations. Since then, they have been tidying up the grounds and making massive improvements to the 10-room motel, including: septic; a water treatment system; roofing; electric and plumbing and a new fence around the pool. They have also installed telephones, flatscreen televisions with satellite and internet along with cosmetic changes, including new laminate flooring to replace carpeting, new furniture, mattresses and bedding. In the Spring, they are hoping to make a boat adjacent to the pool into a pirate ship play area for children. That will complement the existing outdoor barbecue facilities and fire pit. New windows are on the to-do list. And, they also hope to find a local landscaper to help them beautify the grounds as well as get some new signage.

The two are experienced moteliers, having owned and operated a motel in Cochrane. But, after a house fire last March, the sisters, who are originally from Oakville, decided they wanted to move back to southern Ontario. They visited a number of motels that were up for sale and settled on Rosedale. They like the location, just 90 minutes from the GTA; so close to the Rosedale Lock, with a free public boat launch to Balsam Lake. It is also located equal distance between Fenelon Falls and Coboconk and not far from Lindsay. Darlene said they get a lot of people who are into fishing and hunting and people visiting family and friends at nearby parks. Between Thanksgiving and the May 24 weekend, they also offer rentals by the month. They are eager to provide winter lodgings to snowmobilers and ice fishing enthusiasts or those coming to the area for the Christmas holidays. They are also pet-friendly and provide an affordable home away from home. The pool is a definite draw card as no other area motel has one.

Say cheese!

BOBCAYGEON – Bobcaygeon’s Pieter vanOudenaren is being touted as a world-class cheesemaker after one of his cheeses won big at the recent 2013 World Cheese Awards in the United Kingdom. The Tania, Lenberg Farms Classic Reserve, Toscana Sheep’s Milk Cheese, distributed by Finica Food Specialties Ltd., was named to the world’s 58 best cheeses list. Many locals know Pieter from the Bobcaygeon Farmers’ Market and from his years of owning his namesake garage in Bobcaygeon. His decision to join Mariposa Dairy in 2010 is obviously paying off. “I don’t think it’s sunk in yet,” he said of the win. He doesn’t reget the career change although he said he misses the garage’s customers. However, he makes up for it as he is known to carry bags of cheese in his pocket and hand them out as he goes about his business, whether it is visiting the local bank or filling his tank with gas.

FENELON FALLS - Fenelon Court Long Term Care Centre has been named a Centre of Excellence in Person Centre Care in dealing with residents with dementia. Executive director Caroline McGee said that in the fall of 2012, the Alzheimer Society started work to determine what “person-centred care” looks like in long term care to assist homes across Canada in dealing with residents with dementia. She said they went to several homes including Fenelon Court. They interviewed her, other staff and family members to see what they were doing to assist residents with dementia. “Many of our programs are what they want to see in long-term care in dealing with residents with dementia. Some of the programs are Montessori-based programs, understanding resident’s history, background and the journey that has led them to coming to live with us.”

Share the warmth

FENELON FALLS - Every year from mid-November until the end of December, the Bank of Montreal (BOM) in Fenelon Falls accepts donations (loonies & toonies) for its “share the warmth” snowsuit drive. As many as 80 snowsuits and jackets and 20 pairs of winter boots are purchased to help keep children in our area warm during winter. Jeremy Engelstad and Lydia Keesmaat-Walsh get into character for the St. James Fenelon Falls Christmas pageant, 4 p.m. Christmas Eve.

Live animals at pageant

FENELON FALLS - St. James Anglican Church in Fenelon Falls will bring the first Christmas to life with help from some live animals as part of its

“Come-as-you-are Christmas Pageant” at 4 p.m. on Christmas Eve. The sheep will come in the care of their own shepherds from Woolley Wonderland Farm. The pageant is written and directed by St. James youth member and seasoned theatre participant, Lydia Keesmaat-Walsh. “The Christmas story is my favourite story in the Bible,” she said, a story she fell in love with as an eight-year-old actor in “Miracle on Bethlehem Street,” directed by the late Al Nicholson of Fenelon Falls. Since then, Lydia has spent six years with the Lindsay Little Theatre, both on stage and back stage. “Susan [Spicer] asked if I’d like to do [the pageant] and I thought it would be fun.” A few actors will be cast for the pageant, and other volunteers will be given direction at the pageant itself. “We invite everyone, especially families, to join in the story of God coming to us as a child in the most humble circumstances,” says the Rev. Susan Spicer. All are welcome to wear a homemade costume, or to borrow from the St. James collection. There will be opportunities for children to meet and hold the animals at the end of the service. St. James Anglican Church is on Bond St, just east of the main street, in Fenelon Falls. For more information, visit the website at www.fenelonanglican.com, or call the church at 705-887-7169.

Road Runner returns

FENELON FALLS - The Rotary Club of Fenelon Falls has been able to locate a real “local” car for the Classic Car Draw 2013-14.

An open invitation to all men who enjoy singing

The Kawartha Male Chorus Begins a new season January 7th 2014

Rehearsals are every Tuesday at 7:30 pm Cambridge Street Baptist Church, Lindsay We are looking for Tenors, Baritones & Basses who like to sing in an atmosphere of fun and fellowship. For more information call Jim at 705-738-0267 or Eleanor at 705-324-2466 visit our website www.kawarthamalechorus.ca

The 1971 Plymouth Road Runner is one of 14,218 built in 1971, of which 1,681 were built with a 340-cubic inch motor and of only 438 built with a manual transmission. Plymouth paid Warner Brothers $50,000 to use the name and likeness of their Road Runner cartoon character, and paid $10,000 as well to develop a “beep beep”. Our 1971 Road Runner comes with a working “beep beep” horn, a hit with all at car shows. This 1971 one was purchased at Manley Motors by Al Wilson, who drove it until 1976 when it was sold to another man in Lindsay, who drove it for a couple of years. He then put the car in storage until 2002 when Murray Moore and his son Trevor, of Fenelon Falls located it and made the purchase and restoration. Murray and Noreen Moore contacted the Rotary Club of Fenelon Falls, asking if they could use the car, with less than 75,000 original miles, in the Classic Car Draw raffle and the Rotary Club bought it. The club is selling tickets on the car to raise funds to continue their support of charities locally, nationally and internationally. For further information check out www.rotarycardraw. com. The car can be seen at Manley Motors, 76 William St. N., Lindsay.

We would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas. To all of our clients, we hope that you had a good year and look forward to serving you in the New Year! Thank you for your continued support. Seasons greetings from the chamber

BOBCAYGEON - For the staff and volunteers of the Bobcaygeon and Area Chamber of Commerce, as with our area’s businesspeople, residents and seasonal visitors, it’s the time of year in which to look back at the past 12 months, participate in and enjoy the present festive time and, in a week or so, start to think about what next year might hold. It’s been my pleasure to serve as president in 2012-2013, as it will be in 2013-2014. But my efforts are only part of the responsibilities those on our allvolunteer board of directors and committees have taken on and will carry out to provide our community with a range of pleasurable, coming-together events. I would like to thank publisher Max Miller and editor Lisa Gervais at The Kawartha Promoter for providing us with space to inform you about the chamber’s activities and events, and Deb Mahoney for passing those messages via the Promoter’s Bobcaygeon-enhancing bobcaygeononline.com. These vehicles will continue to bring you our news throughout next year. On behalf of the board, office manager Ruthanne Wilson and staff members Wendy Chaput and Cheri Bates, may I wish all of you and your families a Merry Christmas and the very best for 2014.

The Perfect Gift

LINDSAY - If you’re looking for a Christmas gift that will make everyone feel good, consider a donation to the Kawartha Lakes Food Source, a local organization that collects food items and financial donations and distributes them to food banks and charities all over the area. “Many of us have more material things than we can possibly use, so a donation to the Food Source is a great present for all those people who don’t need or want any more stuff,” says Catherine Danbrook, chair of the Food Source’s board of directors. “Lots of people have started to realize that a charitable donation is much more meaningful than something you buy at the mall. By choosing the Food Source, your money goes to work right here in our community.” Available with a donation of any size, a gift card can be sent directly to the recipient or to you if you wish to include it with a card of your own. Both you and the person on the receiving end will feel good knowing your gift is going to feed hungry people in the city. Tax receipts will be provided for gifts over $20. Thank you for a great season

BOBCAYGEON - As the end of the year draws near, we here at Kawartha Settlers’ Village are reminiscing about what a great time we have had. Tourists flocked from as far away as Israel this year as the village saw 964 everyday visitors during our summer season. It is also estimated that 17,290 people have been through the gates this year. As well, we had five weddings and nine other private functions. Thank you to our members, volunteers and tourists that helped make 2013 a recordbreaking year. Looking to 2014, it is membership renewal time. We encourage anyone interested in KSV to renew their memberships or become a new member. Costs are $35 per adult, $50 per family (includes two adults and their children under 12) and $30 for a student with ID. Membership includes free admission to every event hosted by the KSV and free daily admission. Membership is important to the sustainability of KSV. Members vote at the AGM to elect directors who are responsible for the management of the village. Members also demonstrate the strength and vitality of the organization. To become

KAWARTHA LAKES - Soroptimist International of Kawartha Lakes is again offering the Women’s Opportunity Award and the Violet Richardson Award to support women and girls in our community. The Women’s Opportunity Awards give women resources they need to improve their education, skills, and employment prospects. Eligible applicants must be women who provide the primary financial support for their families, and who are enrolled in or have been accepted to a vocational skills training program or an undergraduate degree program. The Kawartha Lakes club will provide $1,000 to its award recipient, who will then advance to the Soroptimist Eastern Canada Region level, where one recipient will receive $5,000 and a second place recipient will receive $3,000. The program culminates with three finalists each receiving a $10,000 award at the Soroptimist Federation level. Applications and information are available from Jo-Ellen Abercrombie 705-328-1144. The deadline for applications is Jan. 31, 2014. The Violet Richardson Award recognizes young women aged 14 to 17 who make the community and world a better place through volunteer efforts such as: fighting drugs, crime and violence; cleaning up the environment; and working to end discrimination and poverty. Volunteer actions that benefit women or girls are especially valued.

The program begins at the local Soroptimist club level with a $200 award for the recipient and a matching donation to the non-profit organization of her choice. The selected recipient then becomes eligible for one of 28 $1,000 awards. In addition, $1,000 will be contributed in honor of these recipients to their volunteer organizations. One finalist will be chosen from among the 28 recipients for an additional award, including a contribution of $2,500 to the finalist’s volunteer organization. Applications and information are available from Suzanne Anchor 705-454-1843. The deadline for applications is Jan. 15, 2014. The successful applicants will be announced in March 2014.

Care for the holidays

KAWARTHA LAKES - With the onset of flu season and the increase in social gatherings over the holidays, healthcare providers can expect a surge in the number of people seeking care at Christmas time. With physicians’ offices closed for the holidays, many of these people seek help from the RMH Emergency Department. It’s important to remember, however, that there are other health services available in the community that might be more appropriate, depending on a patient’s needs. Community healthcare providers are working together and have increased their hours of service over the holidays in order to improve access to care without overwhelming the Emergency Department and causing long wait times. The CKL Family Health Organization’s After Hours Clinic (55 Angeline St. N., Lindsay) will be open on the following dates and times: Dec. 1620, 23, 24, 27, 30, 31, Jan. 2 - 6-9 p.m. and Dec. 21, 22, 26, 28, 29, Jan. 4 and 5 from 9 a.m. to noon. The CKL Family Health Organization’s After Hours Clinic (85 Bolton St., Bobcaygeon) is also offering holiday hours: Dec. 23 - 2-5 p.m.; Dec. 27 - 9 a.m.-noon; Dec. 31 - 5 to 8 p.m., Jan. 2 - 5 to 8 p.m. The Community Care CKL Community Health

Centre (108 Angeline St. S.) will be open on Dec. 23, 24 and 27 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., seeing registered patients of the CHC. People may also speak to a Registered Nurse by phone (toll-free) by calling Telehealth at 1-866797-0000 (TTY: 1-866-797-0007) You may also consider calling your family’s pharmacist for advice.

Horoscopes

Dec. 17 to Jan. 17, 2014 Melodie McCullough

Aries (March 21 to April 20)

Done anything new today, Aries? Of course you have! You woke up to a brand new morning. Why not celebrate?

Taurus (April 21 to May 21)

An old Chinese proverb tells us: Let each sweep the snow from his own door; let him not be concerned about the frost on his neighbour’s tiles. Good advice, Taurus, at this time of year, or anytime for that matter. Concentrate on your own worries and wonders and what you can change, and don’t try to control everyone else.

Gemini (May 22 to June 22)

When you think of the word ‘feelings’, what comes to mind? Sad, mad, disappointed, frustrated, jealous? What about happy, proud, excited? What ever you are feeling, be sure to share it with those around you. The most important thing you can do is – find someone to talk to!

Cancer (June 23 to July 23)

When opportunity knocks at your door, do you run and hide? Deliberate on the best course of action for days? Just this once, we’re suggesting you

jump right in, Cancer! You have the potential to turn something small into a huge success.

Leo (July 24 to Aug. 23)

Ah! A Christmas romance! Lucky Leo. Enjoy the thrill, but also appreciate the tranquility love can bring. Take a walk in the moonlit snow and be at peace – together!

Virgo (Aug. 24 to Sept. 23)

“Maybe Christmas, the Grinch thought, doesn’t come from a store.”: Dr. Seuss. What do you think, Virgo? We all like to get presents; most of us like to give presents. But , don’t forget, there are lots of presents you can give that don’t have to be bought at the mall. Your ‘presence’ and love is one of the best gifts of all.

Libra (Sept. 24 to Oct. 23)

Stuck in a rut, Libra? We suggest a vacation. Unwind a little after the hectic holidays. It doesn’t have to be big, fancy and expensive – just a nice get-away. You will return refreshed!

Scorpio (Oct. 24 to Nov. 22)

Cherish the old traditions this Christmas tide, dear Scorpio, and

hold your loved ones close. Perhaps you are grieving a lost one. We wish you peace.

Sagittarius (Nov. 23 to Dec. 21)

Dear Sag, the winter solstice draws nigh – the celebration of the return of light. Think of it, not as a beginning or ending, but a sign of the circle of life, as you move onward through the days ahead.

Capricorn (Dec. 22 to Jan. 20)

Stay calm and focused, Capricorn! The world is buzzing around you, but you need to keep your head. Priortize and then act.

Aquarius (Jan. 21 to Feb. 19)

Start planning for that work promotion now, Aquarius. Don’t wait for it. Go after it. Show how you can work with your cohorts, not against them. Stand out from the crowd.

Pisces (Feb. 20 to March 20)

Sometimes we must be resigned to the fact that there are people out there who are not kind, for whatever reason. You do not need to tolerate these people, Pisces. Spend your time with those who care for you, not those who insist on controlling or demeaning you.

BOBCAYGEON - Artist Peggy Colman has been busy preparing for two art shows in Bobcaygeon during December. She is displaying her oil and acrylic creations at The Grilled Cheese Hideaway on King Street and also at The Boyd Gallery at William and Canal Streets. People are also invited to an additional exhibit at the Boyd Gallery during regular library hours for the months of December and January 2014. Paintings of this artist are in collections in Canada, the USA, and Australia. She is a passionate, awardwinning artist who paints for the sheer love of it and is thrilled when others want to share in her passion. Peggy welcomes you to visit these two locations to view her most recent creations.

Globus announces 2014 line up

BOBCAYGEON - Globus Theatre at the LAB has announced its five main 11th anniversary shows for 2014. They are: • The Canada Show by Ryan Glad and Bruce Horak, June 25 to July 5 – a tongue-in-cheek history of our great nation. Boundless energy, relentless irreverence and comedic songs combine to take you on a hysterically historical joy-ride through 50,000 years of Canada. • Separate Beds, by Maryjane Cruise, July 9 to 19 - Two couples navigate their relationships as they celebrate their anniversaries on board a Caribbean cruise. This hilarious and heartfelt comedy will ring true with any couple who has ever contemplated sleeping in Separate Beds. • Do You Take This Man? by Sarah Quick, July 23 to Aug. 2 - Joanna has never been fond of responsibility but the question has been asked, the decision made and now the day it all led to has arrived ... a devastating and devastatingly funny journey through courtship, marriage and what real commitment entails. • Rhinestone Cowgirl, created by Leisa Way, Aug. 5 to 16 - With a live band and a flurry of feathers and finery, this is a spectacular tribute to “Rhinestone” cowgirl, Dolly Parton! Laugh at her sassy one-liners and get your toes a-tapping to her hit songs. What a lady! • The Long Weekend by Norm Foster, Aug. 20 to

30 - A lively comedy by prolific playwright Norm Foster - The Long Weekend is a hilarious story of two couples spending a cottage weekend together and the surprises, laughs and troublesome baggage that they bring with them.

Sponsor-a-family Trinity Taxi and Livery Services recently presented a $3,050 cheque to the United Way for the City of Kawartha Lakes, which will funnel the funds to The Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Kawartha-Lakes Haliburton from its “sponsor-a-family to attend the Lindsay Ex” program. ago and was based on science fair research while he was in high school. Noble Purification has developed a BioFiltration system that can effectively remove phosphorous, nano-silver particles, and other heavy metal pollutants using a unique algae, Euglena. Their process can recapture pollutants in an environmentally-friendly, self-sustaining and a lower cost, overcoming any other filtration system currently on the market. Recapturing pollutants allow the contaminants to be sold back to the market, turning the wastewater treatment plants into revenue-generating facilities compared to their current cost centre facilities, alleviating municipal budget stress. The City of Kawartha Lakes will be working with Noble Purification on a pilot project in the very near future. Adam and his team have met with us to discuss possible locations and the requirements for a successful pilot. MEN BEHAVING BADLY

By David Sparkes

Peace on earth.....tell that to the people of Syria. And, for that matter, tell it to the people of Afghanistan and Iraq. Will the people of Lebanon ever find peace and how about the Palestinians? What a strange world we live in! What a strange year we have witnessed! Goodwill to all mankind and loving our neighbours has certainly not been the underlying theme I would suggest. The writers who came up with the title “Men Behaving Badly” may not have had Canadian politicians in mind but it would certainly fit the

bill when you look back on 2013. In fact, looking back on the year, there are so many examples of men and women behaving badly, here in Canada and elsewhere around the world. If, like many of us, you thought you had seen it all, it was a year to change all that. A certain Mr. Ford decided to test the boundaries of extreme behaviour and, to be frank, we all followed his every move with a degree of incredulous enjoyment. We love to see people squirming and hitting out at others. Why is that? If you thought you had seen the worst havoc and devastation that nature could cause you only had to wait until November 2013 for Typhoon Haiyan to hit the Philippines. There’s an area that really knows about the extremities of natural disasters. We think we are so clever with our high tech world, instant communications and robotics. But our entire world can be changed in an instant and we have no control whatsoever over the seemingly random acts of misguided individuals or indeed the organized acts of terrorism. We blame ourselves for climate change but the fact is we have no idea how to control the elements. We have a lot to learn. And then along comes Christmas and all that it stands for, regardless of your religious beliefs. It brings renewed hope in the world because the innocence of small children brings a new

energy and vitality to a tired world. We see the joy and wonder of a new born child coming into this unpredictable life and we see a glimpse of peace and goodwill in that innocence. If, as they say, we are all connected, then every newborn child brings hope for us all. The Christmas story is simply an illustration of why we should not despair and why we should have faith in the future. Christmas Greetings to you all.

Health & Wellness How Simple Carbohydrates Trigger Weight Gain Over The Holiday Season

Simple carbohydrates are foods that easily break down into glucose molecules in the blood stream. Examples of simple carbohydrates include breads, potatoes, candy, rice and pasta. Many processed foods are high in simple carbohydrates. The rapid breakdown of these foods into glucose molecules causes the blood sugar to rise quickly. This spike in blood sugar triggers the pancreas to produce more insulin, bringing blood sugar levels back down to normal levels. As well as lowering blood glucose, insulin also acts to lower the amounts of fats that are circulating in the blood. After a fatty meal, there is a rise in blood lipids (or blood fats) so if the insulin levels are high at this time, fat will be stored in the adipose tissues. This is one of the main reasons that so much weight is gained over the holiday season, a time when many carb rich foods are eaten in combination with fatty foods! Large amounts of simple carbs eaten together with fatty foods is the perfect recipe for rapid weight gain.

a significantly high seniors population, there are always examples of local residents being told they should no longer be operating motorized vehicles. Driving is a complex task and there is no single indicator of a driver’s competence. However, statistics show that other than young male drivers, people aged 70 or older have the highest accident rate in Canada. Furthermore, seniors are much more likely to be killed or seriously injured in collisions. For close to 30 years, Community Care has been providing an answer for residents faced with the prospect of not being allowed to drive themselves. The agency’s Volunteer Transportation Program utilizes hundreds of caring volunteer drivers who provide thousands of rides for local residents each year. The program may be accessed by anyone in need of affordable transportation, but is ideally suited for older people who no longer drive or have access to a vehicle. The service allows people to continue to feel a sense of independence and

Holiday appeal launch

to every household in the City of Kawartha Lakes. “Ultrasound is as crucial as any other component of diagnostic imaging technology,” Dr. Harvie said. “I couldn’t work without it.” “Everyone of us has a role to play in the health of our community,” said Paul McPherson, chair of the RMH Foundation’s board of directors. “We can help keep the best, most trusted tools ready for use at the patients’ bedside — patients from every generation.”

KAWARTHA LAKES - Due to its age and constant use, Ross Memorial Hospital needs to replace its ultrasound equipment as soon as possible and has put that on its wish list for its holiday appeal. The RMH Foundation is hoping to raise $150,000 to help the hospital with this important purchase. The Foundation said in a press release that it appreciates the involvement of radiologist Dr. Sarah Harvie, whose appeal letter is being mailed

A Christmas Wish List to Put Poverty Under Wraps

Mills

By Mary-Lou Mills, Public Health Nurse Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ridge District Health Unit

As a child, do you remember the thrill of flipping through a Christmas catalogue or ‘wish book’? In today’s world of instant online purchases, this memory seems old-fashioned. However, as the holiday season approaches, there is an opportunity to modernize the Christmas wish list. It involves creating a holiday gift list that would benefit families in need in the City of Kawartha Lakes. It would include: • Higher income to allow all families the ability and dignity to pay for rent, buy nutritious food, and cover other necessities. • Reliable, secure jobs to provide families with stability and less stress. • Childcare that is free or subsidized, allowing more parents to work or continue their education. • Affordable housing options so that families have a safe and comfortable place to call home. Wouldn’t these be great presents to put under the tree? While turning this wish list into reality may not happen overnight, there are ways you can help those in need this holiday season. Support a local charity or food bank with

donations, money or time. Volunteer with a social support agency, or sponsor a child to participate in organized sports. By lobbying your elected representatives to develop strategies that reduce poverty, this wish list will ultimately come true. To find out more ways you can help, call the health unit or visit the Rethink Poverty website (www.rethinkpoverty.ca).

Keen to screen

KAWARTHA LAKES - Many women across Ontario are not being regularly screened for breast cancer, a statistic that a local health official says needs to change for the better. New results from the Ontario Breast Screening Report show only 61% of Ontario women aged

50 to 74 years were screened for breast cancer in 2010/11 – the latest year for which results were available in the province. “We need to encourage more women to get regular breast screening,” says Marjorie Oke, a public health nurse with the Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ridge District Health Unit. “Regular screening for breast cancer is essential because it can detect the disease early on when treatment is most effective. This is especially important when breast cancer is the most common cancer, affecting one in nine women in Canada in their lifetime.” Health experts recommend women with an ‘average’ or ‘high risk’ of breast cancer be regularly screened for the disease. In Ontario, average-risk

women who are between the ages of 50 to 70 years can be screened with a mammogram every two years without a referral. Women aged 30 to 69 years who are at higher risk of breast cancer due to genetic factors or a history of breast cancer in their family can be referred to a priority testing program for an annual mammogram and MRI (magnetic resonance imaging). According to Oke, the Ontario Breast Screening Program (OBSP) is a valuable resource to help women get regular screening. The service is free to average-risk women in Ontario ages 50 years and older, who can book an appointment without the need for a doctor’s referral. The OBSP also provides notification to women when they are due for their next screening. There are 162 OBSP screening sites across the province, including Ross Memorial Hospital in Lindsay, To find out more, call the OBSP toll-free at 1-800-668-9304 or visit www.ontario.ca/ screenforlife.

LINDSAY - Husband and wife, Drs. Sean Francis and Stacey Clarke recently donated $2,000 to Ross Memorial Hospital. On Saturday, Nov. 23, the chiropractors opened their new business, the Kawartha Lakes Chiropractic Clinic, and marked the celebration by presenting a cheque for $2000 to Karen Scott, donor relations coordinator at the RMH Foundation. The funds were raised during a boot camp registration promotion in October, which is breast cancer awareness month. All proceeds from registrations were promised to benefit the breast health program at RMH and 80 people participated. The Ross Memorial is an accredited breast assessment centre and has a high risk breast screening program, linked with Cancer Care Ontario.
