Readers will notice a new name in the editorial pages of The Kawartha Promoter’s next edition. Editor Lisa Gervais is leaving the newsmagazine to pursue a career in Teaching English as a Second Language and is en route to India. Replacing her in time for the Aug. 8 edition will be John Bird. Gervais oversaw some major changes at the paper this year, including our new masthead and a shift to city-wide coverage. She bumped up our news section whilst maintaining the community offerings that our readers love. “We are going to miss her,” publisher Max Miller said. “We believe she took the publication to another level and we look forward to continuing in that direction.” Gervais said she had enjoyed her time at The Kawartha Promoter. “There is something uniquely satisfying about working at a small-

town, independently-owned and operated newspaper. “Bobcaygeon, and the entire City of Kawartha Lakes, are fortunate to have such a high caliber, free-toreaders, newsmagazine thanks to our loyal advertisers.” She added that: “Living in Lindsay, and working in Bobcaygeon, has helped me to learn so much more about the north of the City of Kawartha Lakes. It has been a pleasure getting to know both the geography, the people and their issues.” Bird officially took over as editor on Monday, July 21. He is a seasoned writer, editor and photographer whose resume includes the Nunatsiaq News in Nunavut, the United Church Observer and Anglican Magazine, a column for The Peterborough Examiner and a segment on CHEX TV in Peterborough. Readers Support Canada Day Parade
I would like to share my thoughts in response to your reader’s letter “Parade Turn-Off” (July 11, 2014). After the First Nations Peoples, Canada was founded by fur trappers and peasant farmers. These three groups should hold a place of honour and pride at patriotic celebrations. Foresters, miners, fisherfolk and those eking out a living by toil and soil are still the backbone of our great nation. The man driving the well-worn tractor is the Canada Day equivalent to Santa Claus. And if, like Santa, he wants to smoke, all the more reason to celebrate being Canadian. I am a non-smoker and my Canada includes rusty-old-tractor-driving smokers. No one is harmed by his “behaviour,” not anymore than one is already harmed by the fumes and particles from asbestos brake-pads that are distributed by any motor vehicle, on any regular day. Anyone going to a crowded parade knows that they will be exposed to noise, dust and fumes, as well as germs and viruses. There are bound to be people doing all sorts of things someone might find unpleasant or even dangerous. If you don’t like what someone is doing, teach your children to act differently, to stand back from the floats, to put garbage in the proper place and to wash hands regularly. Freedom and tolerance are what make Canadian nationhood possible. How ironic that intolerance and exclusivity should rear their ugly heads at our one and only patriotic event. Leeshia Barwick Kinmount
All shapes and sizes
I would like to respond to the new resident to Bobcaygeon who found fault with one of our participants in the Canada Day parade. I don’t know where she came from to think she has a right to criticize how we do things in Bobcaygeon. One would think she came here for a simpler life but she obviously wants to recreate an environment that she was trying to escape from. My Canada Day parade has Canadians of all shapes and forms. You could be fat or thin. You could be a kid or a senior, a mom or dad, single, married or divorced and certainly a man riding a beat up old tractor smoking a cigarette. By the way you forgot to complain about the dog too. I like animals in my parades also. Doug Davies Bobcaygeon
Legal to smoke
Regarding Carol Chellew’s remarks about a man on a tractor smoking a cigarette, a sight that apparently has “marred” our Canada Day parade to be her “first and last.” Wow! Smoking may not be a smart thing to do and even cost non-smoking tax payers in health care but it is still legal here. Sure, it may even be bad form to do it while riding in a parade but if you allow such a thing to mar your enjoyment of a little town’s (where you have recently arrived) 29th Canada Day parade, then you must be new not only to the town but to Canadian culture and history as well. Please note: Yes, our soldiers smoked in the day’s Canada Day celebrations! They did like a chimney! My father was one of them. Smoking or not, his legacy to me (and I don’t smoke cigarettes) still stands as one of the heroes who fought for freedom to be had in this beautiful land. And, pioneers who built Bobcaygeon, the dams, the canals, you know the watermen and the loggers, they all smoked in the old days! The farmers smoked. Many still do today! And you know what, they do it while they grow the food to feed us! If anything, I find your remarks of insinuating some substandard “screening process” by which the town delegates “who will be in the parade” grossly prejudicial, very disrespectful and nit picking. You may want to spend some time here and absorb the culture before making such hasty comments. I don’t even want to open the door on Ms. Chellew’s comment regarding “screening” of who is allowed. Now, if I saw Chance lighting up while riding on Harold’s tractor, I would be quite upset. Joe Berta Bobcaygeon
Uncalled for
We just finished reading the letter submitted by Carol Chellew in the July 11th issue of The Kawartha Promoter. We were quite taken aback by the uncalled for comments made about a man driving his tractor at the end of the parade. In our opinion, this gentleman represents hardworking farmers who are part of our proud heritage. It was a delight to see him again in this year’s parade and we hope he, his dog and his tractor continue to participate in next year’s Bobcaygeon Canada Day parade. Peter & Laura Wells Bobcaygeon
Great parade
We would like to know who can possibly have nothing better to do than pick apart a beautiful parade that so many people spend their time and money on. So, we have something to be proud of and make us happy to be Canadians and Bobcaygeon residents. We thought it was wonderful. Bobcaygeon you did it again and would like to thank everyone involved. Please keep our great parades happening. The Vanliers and the Todds Bobcaygeon

contained in the bylaw—or with the process that produced it. The intervenors were almost all either trailer park owners or developers and builders, both large and small. Most objected to: • a proposed 400 percent hike in development charges, as outlined in the draft • a proposal to introduce the hikes immediately and completely in one step, rather than phasing

them in • the lack of engagement of both the trailer park owners and developers in the process that produced the draft • that the draft appears to levy development charges against park model trailers in seasonal parks at the same rate as for four-season homes. The proposed new bylaw, which council hopes to see revised and passed before the old bylaw expires September 9, would raise development charges by approximately 400 percent in one step. If the draft were passed in its current form, a permit to build a single-family home in Lindsay would cost $27,000. Rural areas would be charged less, but percentage increases from current rates would be comparable. If a new bylaw is not in place when the old one expires, the city will not be able to levy any development charges against builders. When such a gap between bylaws occurred five years ago, said study author Adam Found, manager of corporate assets, there was a run by builders to acquire permits before a new bylaw could be passed and implemented. In the process, the city lost several hundred thousand dollars in revenue. Development charges are normally levied against new developments to help a municipality pay for the costs of providing increased infrastructure (roads, water, sewage treatment, garbage collection, policing, libraries, etc.).

Without such a charge, the cost of extending those services would fall unfairly on current taxpayers and ratepayers, said Found. Most people seemed to accept Found’s statement that current development charges are extremely low and need to be raised. But some objected to his suggestion that high charges encourage growth by signaling a municipality is development friendly. One builder pointed out that the Municipality of Minden Hills, adjacent to where he works in the Coboconk area levies no development charges at all. The city’s Director of Development Services, Ron Taylor, told The Promoter that staff will try to arrange two round-table meetings with interested parties to work on revisions before bringing the next version of the bylaw to the August 12 council meeting. That’s the last meeting before the current bylaw expires September 9.
Microtunnelling tender awarded
Council voted 12-3 to award a tender for microtunnelling under the Scugog River in the Northwest Trunk Sewer project to Coco Paving of Bowmanville. That brings the total cost for the project to nearly $19 million. It’s an increase of $2 million over a March 2013 estimate, a 10 percent jump that Councillor Gord James said he could not support. “We could have had a bridge over the river” for the sewer trunk for a much lower cost, added Councillor David Hodgson. “I could never support this; it’s appalling.” Staffer Ron Taylor said original estimates for the bridge option had been around $8.5 million.
Bridge work delayed Citing “some inclement
weather and construction issues,” the city said last Thursday (July 17) that its contractor doing bridge works on Highway 36 coming into Bobcaygeon needs two more weeks to compete the job. The main road entrance to the village from the south has been reduced to one-lane most of the summer and construction is now estimated to go until Aug. 21.

QUARRY CONCERNS HIGHLIGHT NPLRA MEET
Quarry development concerns in Trent Lakes and CKL dominated an all-candidates forum at the North Pigeon Lake Rate Payers Association (NPLRA) annual general meeting Saturday July 19. Meeting chair, Ross Morton, also announced progress towards the long-sought goal of protecting Pigeon Lake’s Boyd Island as a natural conservancy forever. He added that the Nogies Creek area is being investigated by archaeologists for its historical importance as a First Nations’ travel route. Morton opened the meeting at the Bobcaygeon Lawn Bowling Clubhouse with an overview of the NPLRA’s mission to reign in run-away quarry development, monitor water quality, address concerns about operation of the Trent-Severn waterway, and question municipal taxation levels. Following the AGM, 14 candidates for municipal councils in CKL and Trent Lakes answered a series of questions in an all-candidates forum. The audience sought candidates’ opinions on quarries, especially the Dewdney Mountain Quarry proposal in Trent Lakes and the CKL Aggregate Secondary Plan proposal. They also asked about the future graphite mining initiative, and candidates said the two municipalities need to cooperate more in future to keep on top of industrial development in the area. The association is also seeking more volunteer support, for itself, municipal council committees, and beyond. Visit www.nplra.ca for more.

STILL TIME TO COMMENT ON PARKING
Brent & Kathy Simpson
LINDSAY – While free on-street metered parking is over, the city is still gathering information to better plan the city’s future parking needs. Parking had been free from June 16 to July 11 as part of an initiative management project on downtown parking use. The city said in a press release that during the month-long initiative, 63 in-person surveys and 327 online surveys had been completed. But it also said that people who have not had an opportunity to complete the survey can still do so during phase two of the project. The goal of the project is to determine whether on-street parking meters play a role in the use of parking downtown; whether people are familiar with the city’s off-street parking lots; their reason for visiting the downtown, and how much and by what method people would prefer to pay for parking. The information will assist with decisionmaking around parking, the city said. As well, the information provides insight for downtown merchants and business owners about customer’s needs. To do the survey online, visit www.city. kawarthalakes.on.ca. At the end of the data collection phases, survey results will be posted to the city’s website at the same address.

Citizens For Responsible Aggregate Development (CFRAD) says it expects a full house when the Ontario Municipal Board (OMB) reconvenes its hearing Friday July 25 on the challenge to the rezoning of the proposed Dewdney Mountain Farms quarry. “The community continues to come together out of concern for the potential negative effects this application may have on our way of life due to dramatic increases in truck traffic,” says CFRAD spokesperson Janet Klein. She says the group, which is the appellant in this hearing, is concerned about “the potential degradation of our environment and adverse effects on our local economy.” Dewdney Mountain Farms has been asked to
produce revised reports on noise and blasting, and a first-time dust report. The OMB hearing will reopen at 10 a.m., at the Trent Lakes Municipal Building (the same location as previously), and is currently scheduled for just one day. Colin Hefferon will continue to chair the hearing.
SCOW M-16 NATIONAL REGATTA
BOBCAYGEON – The Pigeon Lake Yacht Club is hosting the SCOW M-16 National Regatta on the weekend of July 26-27. Organizers said they are expecting several scow boats from the United States. What’s a scow? Imagine a windsurfer with interior space. The wide and flat hull of a scow can skim across the water quickly, depending on conditions. And though these boats are quite stable, participants may still get wet. “Since our American friends are very skillful sailors, the competition will be very exciting,” organizers said. Many of the boats have been built in Bobcaygeon by Joe Bowland who is a member of the club. Contact the club if you want to participate, or if you can help with the organization of this exciting event at 705-304-6135 or e-mail plyc.bobcaygeon@ gmail.com . The club is located at 121 Boyd St. and the website is www.pigeonlakeyachtclub.com

ACCESSIBILITY FUND
LINDSAY: Local organizations with projects in mind to help improve accessibility should apply for an Enabling Accessibility Fund (EAF) grant. The deadline for submitting proposals is Friday, Aug.1, 2014. More than $8 million in funding is available through this year’s call for proposals. All applications are reviewed against eligibility criteria, call for proposal requirements and program objectives. Application information is available on Employment and Social Development Canada’s website at www.esdc.gc.ca/eng/disability/eaf/. Since the creation of the EAF in 2007, the Federal Conservatives, thanks to taxpayers, have funded more than 1,400 projects, helping thousands of Canadians gain better access to their communities’ facilities, programs and services. Examples of eligible projects could include: renovations to widen hallways and doorways; installing elevators; installing automated power doors; replacing doorknobs that are difficult to grasp with accessible handles, and installing accessible washrooms and showers; upgrading facilities that offer programs for adults and/or children with autism and other cognitive/intellectual impairments.

LINDSAY RIBFEST DUCK DERBY
LINDSAY – Organizers of this year’s Lindsay Ribfest expect more than 25,000 people for their sixth annual event to be held Aug. 14 – 17 at Old Mill Park. The family-oriented community event raises money for charity and attracts tourists to the city. In 2014, proceeds will be donated to Community Care City of Kawartha Lakes and the Canadian Mental Health Association’s Haliburton Kawartha and Pine Ridge branch. In addition, it is the only Ribfest in Ontario that allows other charities to attend for either a reduced vending fee or for a small donation to the main charitable beneficiaries. New this year is the Duck Derby on Aug 17. The public can purchase a duck for $5 or three for $10 at 229 Kent St. W. Organizers added that they have booked the

Midnight Madness Sale Do you know what a “bungee run” is? If you want to find out, make sure you show up for Bobcaygeon’s annual Midnight Madness event set for Saturday August 2 in the downtown core. The bungee run is just one of several attractions organizers are bringing to this year’s madness, according to spokesperson Bob Hughes. You’ll also find a bouncy castle, a climbing wall, balloon sculpting (all to appeal to the young at heart) and three bands offering a variety of music, he says. Lakes Church will be offering a craft show, and the Curling Club will also feature fun activities. “And let’s not forget the food,” says Hughes,
including both street vendors and restaurants. Of course, shopping deals and the “Blowout Sidewalk Sale” are the heart of Midnight Madness, and the main attraction for adults. Bolton Street, and this year part of King Street, will be reserved for pedestrian traffic only. Downtown stores will move their wares out onto the sidewalks and streets, and other vendors will set up on additional street space. Hughes expects up to 40 retailers to be open for business during the Saturday evening event. Organizers will begin setting up for the night’s fun right after the close of regular business hours on

COBY FOOD BANK NEEDS VOLUNTEERS
The Coboconk Food Bank is in urgent need of help or they may have to close their doors. “We are in desperate need of long-term volunteers to lend a hand on the second and fourth Thursdays
each month,” says Wes Sanders, a volunteer with the Food Bank for the past 18 years. The Coby Food Bank has been helping local families for almost 20 years and there are almost 30 families who are relying on the help that the Food Bank gives right now. As a member of the Kawartha Lakes Food Source, the Coboconk Food Bank receives a portion of what is donated or bought by the Food Source each month, in addition to much-needed local donations. If you can help, please contact Wes at 705-4549887. Your community thanks you.

NORLAND & COBOCONK THE PLACE TO BE THIS SUMMER!
What a beautiful place to spend time this summer. I can’t think of any other place I’d rather be. Everything I need is right here. Great patios? You can’t beat the Riverside Inn, Café Diem, the Pattie House and the Dockside
Coboconk. And don’t forget the famous fries at Ryans and the best pizza - with their (secret recipe) sauce smelling de-licious simmering away all day - at Riverbank Pizza. (and you can treat yourself to ice cream at Souter’s Variety for dessert!) Looking for something to do? How about some world-class golf at the Links at Monck’s Landing? Or Go-Karts and Mini Putt at Coby Go-Karts? Or maybe a hike through Balsam Lake Provincial Park’s trails? Oh, and we can’t forget the free summer concerts at Lions Park, great band nights at the Pattie House (and I think I heard a rumour about another Yuk Yuk’s night), and the ever-popular, always-sold-out-early Duck Derby! And the lakes…ah, the lakes. What better way to spend a day than boating, fishing, swimming, or just relaxing on the lake. Norland & Coboconk. Life is good, yes?.

BEST KEPT SECRET IN NORLAND: THE LINKS AT MONCK’S LANDING
Who wouldn’t want to spend the morning on a welldesigned, picturesque, challenging golf course right in our own backyard? Having won high praise for its design, and located just outside of Norland, Monck’s Landing is a family-run operation with a “links-style” layout drawing its inspiration from the classic golf courses of the British Isles (treeless, rolling terrain, pot bunkers, high fescue rough) - providing an affordable and picturesque golf experience unlike any other in the Kawarthas. Some of its notable accolades include being featured in SCOREGolf Magazine, which lauded it as “an affordable and gnarly nine-hole links course with plenty of bite”, as well as being nominated “Best New Course in Ontario” in 2010 by Fairways Magazine. The Links at Monck’s Landing is a great local story that shows the vision of one family to build a challenging 9-hole golf course (with a dual tee block design for 18 holes) on beautiful farm land, moving a minimum of earth during the construction, resulting in a remarkably natural, flowing layout with a Scottish feel. Check out Monck’s Landing for an ‘every club in the bag’ golf experience. And while you are enjoying a beverage on their licensed patio, be sure to ask about the history behind the remarkable stone barn that houses the Pro Shop.

Taurus (April 21 to May 21) Try not to alienate the very people who care most about you, during this phase, Taurus. You will need them! Also, be aware of the colour yellow. It is an important symbol for your zodiac sign right now, representing wisdom, joy, and happiness. Gemini (May 22 to June 22 It’s a complex life for a Gemini, with twins for a sign. There are often two sides to your personality and people can be unsure with which one they are dealing at a certain time! So make sure you know yourself well enough to help them out. Cancer (June 23 to July 23) In every bit of life there is a “hidden curriculum”. What’s that, you say? Well, even though it may seem like an ordinary day, you are learning stuff all the time, even when you don’t realize it. You are also teaching others by what you do. So make good use of every single day! Leo (July 24 to Aug. 23) It’s summer, so treat yourself, dear Leo! Take that bite of chocolate; go jump in the lake; sit down to a big bowl of fresh strawberries; whatever you enjoy – we say, indulge yourself. Autumn waits around the corner! Virgo (Aug. 24 to Sept. 23) Sometimes, Virgo, you have to “roll with the punches” as the common saying goes. Be ready to take what is thrown your way, and be ready to use it and build on it to make something worthwhile from it. Libra (Sept. 24 to Oct. 23) We sense some money heading your way, Libra. Use it wisely. Put some aside, but don’t be afraid to splurge a little too – if you aren’t expecting this money, then it’s a little extra for something just for you. Scorpio (Oct. 24 to Nov. 22) Scorpio in love: Truly, madly, deeply. Oh, yes, Scorpio, the heat is on, and we don’t just mean the summer temperature. Will it last? We can’t say for sure. Let it burn bright. We’re rootin’ for you! Sagittarius (Nov. 23 to Dec. 21) The essence of self-esteem is compassion for yourself – and courage is to love yourself. This means,

Capricorn (Dec. 22 to Jan. 20) “What if I fall?”, the young child asks. “Oh my darling, but what if you fly!”, answers her Mom. Capricorn – it’s all about the flying, isn’t it? It’s about losing your fear of the unknown and taking risks. That’s life! Aquarius (Jan. 21 to Feb. 19) “You must live in the present, launch yourself on every wave, find your eternity in each moment.”: Henry David Thoreau. This is such a pretty way of saying “live in the now”! There will always be ups and downs, but there will also be many “waves” along the way to carry you through. Pisces (Feb. 20 to March 20) We know you get lots of advice, Pisces, all well-wishing: exercise; relax; meditate; talk to someone you trust; laugh. Sometimes it can all be so overwhelming. We recommend you choose one! Take it from there and see what happens.

Health & Wellness COMMUNITY CARES
SHARE THE ROAD
KAWARTHA LAKES – In a ‘sign’ of the times, provincial police, health officials, and driving and cycling enthusiasts are encouraging people on bikes and in cars to share the road. More of the yellow Share the Road signs (purchased through an Ontario Ministry of Transportation grant) have been installed along area roadways and for the second straight year, the local health unit, Kawartha Cycling Club, and the CKL OPP detachment are teaming up to promote the ‘share the road’ message. Just like cars, bikes are considered vehicles under the Ontario Highway Traffic Act, which means cyclists have the right to ride on public roadways, said Const. Carrie Lanning of the CKL OPP. “It puts
The Ontario Government has re-introduced its pre-election budget. It is a time for community health agencies such as Community Care City of Kawartha Lakes to say that we are “cautiously optimistic” about what is in the budget, as far as health care funding is concerned. Though there are freezes on overall health care spending, the budget does indicate increased support for the community health sector, and a number of measures addressing the determinants of health. That interests community support service agencies such as Community Care, and the thousands of clients that the agency assists each year. While there is no additional health funding, the province has shown a willingness to shift support within health care so that home and community support services will see slight rises in 2014/15. In addition, a Community Capital Fund is to be created to help shift care from www.totalfootcare.ca hospitals to community settings. This should result in agencies MEDICAL FOOT CARE such as Community Care being We provide complete supported in their work to help treatment for all foot pain people remain in their own and problems in adults homes, rather than having to and children… from corns, face hospitalization or long-term calluses, warts and nails to care facilities. the legal onus on both motorists and cyclists to share the road and be courteous and respectful of each other. Put simply, it’s a case of: same roads, same rules, and same rights.” Motorists should slow down and give at least one metre clearance when passing a bike and only pass when the road ahead is clear; drivers should never honk at a bike and always yield to bicyclists when turning; and check for passing cyclists before opening a vehicle door. The responsibility also lies with cyclists, says Art Hornibrook, an avid cyclist and member of the Kawartha Cycling Club “and that means cyclists using care and caution by obeying all traffic laws, signs and signals,” always bike on the right with

CARE WALK RETURNS
LINDSAY - Officials at Community Care City of Kawartha Lakes are excited to once again be presenting a special event designed to raise funds for the agency, to promote physical wellness and health, and to draw attention to one of the many great walking trails in this municipality. The 5th annual Care Walk in support of Community Care will be held on Saturday, Aug. 23 along the 1.5 km Rotary Trail in Lindsay. Pledge forms for participants are now available at any of the agency’s offices. Members of the public are invited to join Community Care in taking part in the event. towards the agency’s Community Support Services, including Adult Day programs, Meals on Wheels and transportation. Members of the public are encouraged to walk any or all portions of the trail. Trail marshals will assist participants with support and refreshments. The Rotary Trail is between King Street and Logie Street in Lindsay with the start at the King Street entrance, east of the Lindsay locks, with registration at 9:30 a.m. for the 10 a.m. walk. Those interested in taking part can get pledge sheets from Community Care and register at the same time. Community Care provides support and programs for seniors and people with special needs to live comfortably and independently in their own homes.
HELPING YOUTH FIND WORK
KAWARTHA LAKES - VCCS Employment Services and the City of Kawartha Lakes have partnered for a third consecutive year to enhance youth employment potential in rural areas of the city. The project is funded through the Canada Summer Jobs program. VCCS Employment Service will be holding a number of workshops at regional library branches to teach students valuable skills that will assist them in their search for summer employment. Students will have a chance to learn and practice their skills working with an experienced youth employment counsellor
before they enter the job market. Two separate workshops will be presented for this year’s youth outreach program. During the first two weeks of July, students were invited to learn more about how to build an effective resume to attract the attention of local employers. During the following two weeks, students will have the chance to find out more about the interviewing process, and how to use networking to find hidden job opportunities. To find out more about this summer’s workshops, call VCCS Employment Services at 705-328-0180. You can also drop into any city library for the Rural
APPS FOR HEARING INSTRUMENTS
One of the ways that hearing instrument manufacturers are distinguishing their products from the devices produced by their competitors is through the introduction of smartphone “apps” (or “applications”) typically in the form of small, specialized programs downloaded onto mobile devices linked to their hearing instruments. Among other things, these new apps can help users utilize their hearing instruments as headphones to stream phone calls. One new app enables users to remotely configure settings on their hearing instruments (such as volume, treble, and bass) as well as to remember particular settings for different venues. That way, users can make an adjustment that “geotags” their location so that their hearing instruments will remember the settings the next time they are there. To learn more visit our website at “www.hearingdoctor.ca” or to schedule a hearing consultation, please call us at the number below. P.S. There is an app for noisy locations that transforms an iPhone into a microphone that streams conversation into a connected hearing instrument for better clarity. It also helps people find their misplaced instruments.

parking meter proceeds
Registered charitable organizations in the CKL still have a chance to get in on the Lindsay Downtown Business Improvement Association’s (LDBIA) Charity Meter program. The LDBIA will select twelve charitable groups to receive money collected from six designated “charity parking meters” on Kent Street. The first six groups selected will receive money collected from July 1, 2014 to June 30, 2015 and the next six groups will receive proceeds from July 1, 2015 to June 30, 2016. But applications must be received by 4 pm
on Friday, August 8. They can be emailed to info@ mylindsay.com or dropped off at the office, 117 Kent St. W., Lindsay, between 8 am. and 2 pm. Monday to Friday. You can find eligibility requirements and applications through the LDBIA’s Facebook page (MyLindsayDowntown), or by emailing info@ mylindsay.com. Money collected throughout the year at the six designated meters is divided between the selected charities. When the second disbursement takes place this summer, the program will have distributed more than $8,000 to local non-profits. Eligible applications will be reviewed by members of the LDBIA’s Parking Committee. All groups that submit an application will be contacted. For more information, call Deb Bartlett at 705324-7710, or email info@mylindsay.com.

FINANCIAL CORNER
QUESTION: I am already retired. I don’t need a financial plan, do I? RESPONSE: Yes, for sure. A financial plan looks at your current financial situation (income, expenses, assets and liabilities) and develops a plan or road map to accomplish your financial and other life goals. Sounds good, however, in early retirement the question becomes “what can I afford to spend without being financially compromised when I might incur health-related expenses in a later stage.” An experienced financial professional can look at the expenses in the various stages of retirement and develop a plan to meet your needs and give you peace of mind. Your financial professional can also assist in planning your retirement income. The objectives would be to maximize after-tax income over the longer term. Artistic director D. Jeremy Smith says, “The Tempest is, at its roots, a play about the nature of family. Driftwood has been blessed over the course of its 20-year history with an incredible family of artists, supporters and audiences who make it possible for us to bring the works of history’s greatest playwright to life in the twilight enchantment of a summer evening. And so our 20th season puts the spotlight on family as we seek to understand the bonds which hold us together, the responsibility we owe to those we love (and love to hate), and the legacies we strive to pass on to our future generations.” The cast includes Richard Alan Campbell, Christopher Darrock, Madeleine Donohue, Peter van Gestel, Steven Burley, Miriam Fernandez, Kaleb Alexander, Christina Gordon and Farah Merani. All performances are ‘pay what you can’ with a $20 suggested donation at the door. The best blanket and lawn chair spaces can be reserved in advance for $20 to $24 via www.driftwoodtheatre.com . BYO blanket or lawn chair, or rent them at the venue.

IT’S AN HONOUR
From left: Cody Lawrence, Dana Lawrence and Joe Willems. Supplied.
BOBCAYGEON – A mobile exhibit - designed to connect, honour and inspire Canadians - will be on Canal Street near the library building July 28 and 29. Mounted in a specially designed 1,000-squarefoot vehicle, the “It’s An Honour” interactive exhibit is travelling across Canada to celebrate the Canadian Honours System, which includes all the awards and medals that the Governor General hands out each year to Canadians, be it for bravery, military valour, service to the community, or extraordinary achievement. The travelling exhibit is free, wheelchair accessible and fully bilingual. It was officially launched in the fall of 2013 and is housed inside a large 18 wheeler truck which is 27 metres long and 9.2 metres wide when fully expanded. Between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. each day, visitors can see and touch some of the awards and medals, read recipients’ stories and learn how they too can nominate deserving individuals from their communities for these awards and honours. For more information, visit www.gg.ca/ HonoursExhibit and follow them on Facebook and Twitter @HonoursExhibit.

Wayne Hutchinson at Midnight Madness June 28 to close out the classic car draw for 2013-14. Cody Lawrence was there for the draw and appeared to be in shock as his name was called. Others around him also called his name and finally he made his way to the front to receive his car, a 1971 Plymouth Road Runner, appraised at $47,900. Cody was sitting in the car and before he even had the keys he was made an offer for the car but turned it down. Cody and his father Dana have said they will keep the car as an investment. Organizers said they look forward to seeing the car around Fenelon Falls and at car shows in the area. For the 2014-15 car draw, the Rotary Club of Fenelon Falls has a 1969 Dodge Coronet RT with a 440 numbers matching engine. This car is appraised at $41,000 and tickets are on sale. Tickets can be purchased online at www. rotarycardraw.com, at Stokes on Trent and Memory Lane Motors in Fenelon Falls. In Lindsay tickets are at Lindsay Dodge, John’s Quality Car Care, Easton’s Minute Muffler, Easton’s Classic Cars, The Pita Pantry, Braisers Truck Service and Baseline Fender & Supply. In Bobcaygeon, tickets are at Extreme Collision and in Bolsover at National Moparts. The Rotary Club of Fenelon Falls thanked those who had supported its draw since 2002, in which they have offered 12 cars that have made dreams come true for some. Tickets are $5 each, five for $20, 10 for $40 and 15 for $50.
