This week’s news that the Alzheimer Society has chosen Bobcaygeon for ‘a dementia-friendly town’ pilot program is a bit of a good news – bad news story. The fact the society and its client advisory committee chose Bobcaygeon because it is welcoming, hospitable and offers a sense of community is, indeed, very good to hear. The fact that they estimate that hundreds of people in the community have dementia is a little more sobering. However, it is hoped that a successful Bobcaygeon pilot project can one day go nation-wide and that is huge news for Bobcaygeon as well as the entire City of Kawartha Lakes. So, what are they planning? If you, or someone you know, has dementia, you, or they, will be asked to wear a recognized symbol so that people in the town know that you have dementia and what stage of dementia you have. In turn, businesses

and organizations will have decals on their windows to let you know that they have had some training in dealing with dementia so theirs will be a safe haven for you. There will be public education sessions for businesses and organizations in the coming weeks and months. The idea is to make life better for people with dementia in our community so that they can lead full and independent lives. It is also aimed at encouraging members of the general public to see these people for who they are – active members of our community, first and foremost, who just happen to have a dementia health challenge. Kudos to members of the client advisory committee – all of whom have various stages of dementia – and were on hand for the pilot program launch at Retirement Suites of Kawartha Lakes. People such as Colleen O’Grady and Paul O’Donahue put a face to dementia in our area and prove that a diagnosis does not mean they have stopped living. We encourage everyone in Bobcaygeon and the City of Kawartha Lakes to get behind this initiative. editor@thepromoter.ca

Looking for helpers

Following in the footsteps of the Olympics and Paralympics, it seemed an opportune time to ask for help to keep Canada Day alive in Bobcaygeon. Marg McLean, Silver Jubilee recipient, has organized this day for the past 28 years, along with a small committee. The races, face painting and games at Tommy Anderson Park start off the day, followed by cake at the Lock 32 park and parade at 2:30 p.m., followed by great music. The best fireworks display in the Kawartha Lakes begins around 10 p.m. This day is funded by the Bobcaygeon Legacy C.H.E.S.T. Fund, Canadian Heritage Fund, COKL 50-50 capital fund and development fund and the very generous donations by businesses in Bobcaygeon and individual supporters. We need help. We are seeking people to help on Canada Day at Tommy Anderson Park and help with the parade and collection day. We are also seeking individuals to be on the committee and bring forth new ideas. Our goal is to make sure our young people celebrate Canada and be proud of our heritage. We live in a great country and feel July 1 should be a special day for everyone. Awesome year for rink

What an awesome year it has been for the community ice rink at Tommy Anderson Park. My request for help through The Kawartha Promoter was answered. Thanks to our new volunteers, Aaron Shaw, Dave Haney, Bobcaygeon Public School, Rodney Smith-Merkley and all those nameless people who just came out to help. Not a good meeting time

I felt badly that I was unable to attend the Feb.12th meeting of the Kawartha North Family Health Team. As a certified hypnotherapist I have a great amount of healing to offer this community, however, with no advertising budget I am unable to reach many people. This meeting may well have offered an opportunity to help my community. Holding this meeting on a Wed. afternoon made it difficult for many people to attend. Money for TSW announced

PETERBOROUGH – The federal government has announced $58 million in Trent-Severn Waterway (TSW) infrastructure spending for the next two years although nothing is earmarked for Bobcaygeon, Fenelon Falls and Lindsay. However, a major investment of $24.1 million will go into the Bolsover Dam at Lock 37 while another $3.5 million will be spent rehabilitating the Kennisis Dam in the Haliburton-Kawartha Lakes-Brock riding. The announcement of a total of $58 million for major capital projects and ongoing preventative maintenance on the TSW was made in Peterborough last Friday (Mar. 14) and includes $11.5 million for dam safety and preventative maintenance projects for bridges, dams, lock gates and retaining walls as well as the management of navigation markers, and visitor facilities. Local MP Barry Devolin was on hand for the news and said in a press release “as someone who grew up on the Trent Severn Waterway, I know firsthand that major investments over many years are needed to upgrade and maintain the sustainability of the watercourse. Like with any piece of critical infrastructure, the projects we’re announcing today are an important step towards ensuring that our National Historic Site will become more modern and better maintained.” He said the funding is important to ensure the TSW continues to be a world class destination for recreational boaters and a model of environmental sustainability. “I’ve always said that the TSW encourages outdoor recreation, fosters economic development which supports our rural economy, and ultimately, builds stronger communities.” Devolin said the funding is in addition to the 2014 Economic Action Plan to invest $391.5 million in funding for highways, bridges and dams in national parks and along historic canals with details pending.

Brian Eberts received a letter in the mail from a Hong Kong auditor saying he had found $17.5 million in a dormant account belonging to the late Mr. K.P. Eberts. They were seeking a next of kin. The pitch was to transfer the money to a safe overseas account. Eberts said he knew the letter, bearing a South Africa stamp, was not legitimate and wanted to share the story for public information. “If it seems like it’s too good to be true, it probably is,” Eberts said. He advised that people get professional advice if they receive such a letter.

Dementia-friendly community

BOBCAYGEON - The local Alzheimer Society is launching a pilot program in Bobcaygeon aimed at making the town dementia-friendly. The initiative was unveiled at Retirement Suites of Kawartha Lakes earlier this month by members of the society and its client advisory committee, that cover Peterborough, Kawartha Lakes, Northumberland and Haliburton. The society’s Pat Finkle said once a person is diagnosed with dementia, it does not mean that they stop living and “living in a dementia-friendly community can help them to live life to the fullest.” She said there were hundreds of people in the Bobcaygeon area who had dementia but were active in the community. She said the society chose Bobcaygeon as the host site for the pilot program because it is welcoming and hospitable and there is a sense of community. The program will focus on identifying community members who have dementia by having them wear a recognized symbol to alert people about their condition. Finkle said it will help others to realize they have dementia and may need help. Businesses will also have decals in their windows to let people know they are willing and able to help and have an understanding of their needs. There is also a public education component, with training sessions for businesses and organizations. Another goal is to redefine how people feel

about dementia, so that people see the person and not their disease. If the program is successful, the society would like to see it launched nationwide. Colleen O’Grady and Paul O’Donahue, members of the client advisory committee, talked about their diagnoses. Colleen said it didn’t stop her from shopping, enjoying entertainment, travelling, swimming, walking or going to the library so she can live life to the fullest. Paul said sometimes he just needs a helping hand to do the things he wants to do. Both said the program would make their lives easier. Paul said it will be easier to go into a store and feel comfortable asking for help. “My independence will be supported. We have difficulties but we are not incapable.” Finkle concluded: “Dementia is not to be feared. It’s to be understood.”

Mathyssen pans feds on seniors, vet affairs

need to be ready with a plan but said the federal Conservatives are so focused on balancing the budget that it is coming on the backs of the country’s most vulnerable. She said the NDP, if elected to lead the country in 2015, would sit down with the provinces to negotiate a “real health accord” and work to reform and modernize the system. Mathyssen is the Official Opposition Critic for Seniors in the NDP Shadow Cabinet. She also sits on the committee for veteran’s affairs and said the federal government is making it almost impossible for veterans to get higher funeral costs paid out under its increased Last Post Fund initiative but anticipates they will brag about the program’s cost savings at the next budget. Mathyssen visited the City of Kawartha Lakes Family Health Team office in Lindsay, spoke to veterans at the Bobcaygeon Legion, seniors at Adelaide Place in Lindsay, attended an NDP fundraiser in Lindsay and spoke to seniors in Fenelon Falls during her Mar. 13 and 14 visit.

Scott said she addressed the siting issue recently by asking questions in the House to Premier Kathleen Wynne and the ministers of energy and environment, claiming all three failed to provide an adequate answer. She said the Sumac Ridge Wind Farm that was approved in December 2013 by the Ministry of Environment will have a huge

impact on the development of the Peterborough Airport, will damage the Oak Ridges Moraine and overshadow the Cham Shan Temple. “The fight is not over. There is still Stoneboat Community Wind Farm’s current FIT contract and three more projects in the area and we will not quit until they are stopped. The recent news just means we are on the right track. This will reenergize the communities to keep up the fight,” Scott said. An Environmental Review Tribunal (ERT) resumes April 10 into the Sumac Ridge project.

Wind project blows away

BETHANY – Local MP Laurie Scott says she was thrilled with the recent announcement that the Stoneboat Community Wind Farm would be withdrawing its proposal to build five wind turbines in the City of Kawartha Lakes. “Community leaders have come together to battle against these projects and have worked tirelessly for the last four years,” Scott said in a news release, adding that she had worked alongside them. Manvers Wind Concerns has also welcomed the news. While the Stoneboat project has been cancelled, she said there is still the outstanding Feedin Tariff (FIT) contract that needs to be terminated. Ward 16 Coun. Heather Stauble said the concern is that the FIT contract is transferable. DEVOLIN IN KOREA FOR FTA

SEOUL, KOREA - Local MP Barry Devolin joined Prime Minister Stephen Harper, International Trade Minister Ed Fast, and Minister of Industry James Moore, to conclude negotiations for a bilateral free trade agreement between Canada and South Korea. “After eight years of working behind the scenes and promoting the benefits of a free trade agreement with the Korean community in Canada, I am ecstatic a deal has been finalized,” Devolin said in a press release. “This pact has significant meaning for my riding especially with the new markets opening up for our agricultural and agri-food sector, which is a large part of this area’s economy.” Devolin said that, for example, it is estimated that

Kinmount supports bursary program

KINMOUNT – The Kinmount community has once again risen to the education challenge by raising close to $12,000 for the Kinmount District Bursary Fund to help local students go on to postsecondary education. A successful loonie auction was recently held at the Galway Hall, the third of its kind since the fund was founded in 2011. Kinmount pharmacist Khosrow Eshkour is the brainchild behind the fund, which has sponsored about 18 students to date with bursaries of $1,000 each. Khosrow said the fund is near and dear to his heart since provincial studies have found that

the area has some of the lowest participation rates for students going on to university, college or trade schools. He said he started the program to bring awareness about education to the area and to give potential post-secondary students a helping hand. He received the support of the community and there is now a board that administers the bursaries. This year’s funds will go towards another 10 students beginning the academic year at a recognized post-secondary institution in September 2014, Khosrow said. To qualify, students must be eligible for the Ontario Student Assistance Program (OSAP), which establishes need, and they must be accepted by a recognized university, college or trade school. Interested students can get a written application form from the Kinmount Pharmacy. The board is expected to meet in May and June to go over applications. Skating club turns 50

FENELON FALLS - The Fenelon Falls Skating Club is putting the finishing touches on 50th anniversary celebrations slated for Saturday, March 29 in the town. The festivities will be held at the Fenelon Falls Community Center at 27 Veteran’s Way. “We are so excited about the 50th year of the Fenelon Falls Skating Club that we are hosting a celebratory event whose sole purpose is to join the community,” the club said, adding “this club has a long, wonderful history and has provided excellent coaching and life lessons to some pretty awesome, talented skaters over the last 50 years. We are extremely excited about the event.” Throughout the month of March, local businesses have caught the spirit with skating club-themed window displays in a fun competition that will be judged Mar. 28. They have also helped to sponsor the event along with the Fenelon Falls Legacy C.H.E.S.T. fund and the city. The celebrations kick off at 11 a.m. with a memorabilia and historical display, ice show (starting at 1 p.m.) followed by a reception, a free public skate and a social hosted by the Royal Canadian Legion for alumni skaters in the evening. Income tax season is upon us and perhaps you don’t know where to start? Many people find tax time stressful, but with a little preparation, it can be a cinch. Read on for some tips to make preparing your income tax return quicker and easier: • S tart early. This way, you’ll not only avoid penalties for late filing, but you’ll also be able to organize your finances to take advantage of potential tax benefits. Prepare the returns of everyone in the family at the same time. Often, expenses that won’t benefit one member of the family can be transferred to another. •G et organized. It’s much easier to prepare your tax return if you file the documents you’ll need in one place. Taxes in Canada are due on Apr. 30 every year. If you’re preparing your own return, you can use the Canada Revenue Agency’s NETFILE program to submit it. You’ll save time, make fewer mistakes and, if applicable, get your refund faster. Tradespeople can deduct tool costs

If you are an employed tradesperson, you may be able to deduct up to $500 of the cost of eligible tools you bought in 2013. You may also be able to get a rebate of the Goods and Services Tax/Harmonized Sales Tax (GST/ HST) you paid. For more information, see Employee

Important facts: An eligible tool is a tool (including associated equipment such as a toolbox) that: • y ou bought to use in your job as a tradesperson and was not used for any purpose before you bought it; • y our employer certified it as being necessary for you to provide as a condition of, and for use in, your job as a tradesperson; and • is not an electronic communication device (like a cell phone) or electronic data processing equipment (unless the device or equipment can be used for the purpose of measuring, locating, or calculating). Kids learn it’s cool to curl

BOBCAYGEON - Once again, the Bobcaygeon Curling Club offered the Bobcaygeon Public School curling instruction for students from Grades 4 to 8. Last year, 22 students were trained and in 2014 there were 43 participants signed up. The students registered to curl twice a week for the months of January and February. Parents, friends and relatives watched the weekly training and instructional sessions and games. Laura Ferguson, from the curling club, was the main instructor. She was helped by 16 additional volunteers. The two-month schedule finished on Mar. 3 with a bonspiel and prize presentation. One sponsor, Godfathers Pizza, supplied pizza and pop, plus the students enjoyed cake and other treats along with their prizes. The program was developed and strongly supported by the public school to provide the students with an introduction to curling. Many of the children had watched some of our Olympic men’s and women’s curling games this year and this probably helped increase the attendance. - Submitted by Ron Piesanen

BOBCAYGEON - Caring for Waters, a Lenten study hosted by Trinity United Church in Bobcaygeon, kicks off Monday, Mar. 24. The ‘Growing, Embracing, Sharing’ series consists of a 30-minute video followed by a 30-minute discussion every Monday night during Lent. Reverend Rodney Smith-Merkley said the focus is on the fact that “sources of drinkable water are becoming increasingly scarce” and “communities and countries are actively looking for ways to ensure safe water for everyone.”

BOBCAYGEON - Winter is still here and according to the calendar Spring is too. Soon to follow is Easter and with Easter come Easter Eggs. Our club shrunk quite a bit this winter as many packed up and travelled to the sunny south. We still managed to make 1,169 eggs with the help of many friends and we would like to thank Robert, Glenna, Lynda, Lynn, Dylan, Glenda, Brittany and our soon to be Kinette, Chris. There were beaters, kneaders, weighers and shapers the first evening, followed on the second evening by dippers, decorators and wrappers. This whole process was repeated and the eggs were soon out for sale. We are lucky to have so many businesses in town and area who support us and have our eggs for sale in their stores. The eggs sell for $3 and the proceeds

Community Care is committed to providing support and programming to assist people in our community who are dedicated caregivers. Caregiving for seniors can be a demanding task. Caregivers need a wide range of knowledge, emotional support and relevant resources to help them tackle such a challenging journey. Community Care strives to provide high quality support services for caregivers

and the individuals that they are looking after. As a partner in care, the agency has planned an upcoming “Care for the Caregiver” information series that is designed to give local people information, support and resources, so that they are able to provide for a family member as well as themselves. A free, six-part information series will feature local experts in health care and other areas of interest for caregivers. The series will be held on Wednesday evenings, every two weeks at Community Care Village Housing (65 Melbourne St. W.) in Lindsay, beginning Apr. 2. Ross gets its chemistry analyzer

LINDSAY - Ross Memorial Hospital’s new chemistry analyzer has arrived - thanks to donors. The hospital’s new chemistry analyzer is being assembled in the laboratory, thanks to donors whose gifts to the spring appeal in 2013 made it possible to replace the aging model that worked 24/7 for 12 years. The chemistry analyzer is one of the most important tools in the hospital, producing results for 35 different tests, such as blood tests, pinpointing kidney and liver function, cardiac health and drug levels. It processes samples and generates a report, showing the patient’s levels (of cholesterol, glucose, calcium, electrolytes, etc.) that allow physicians to make diagnoses and begin their treatments. The hospital counts on it 24 hours a day, seven days a week. “Our donors’ response to this need in the hospital was incredible,” said Erin Coons, executive director of the RMH Foundation. “Their gifts helped us to exceed our fundraising goal by 35%, raising $114,903

BOBCAYGEON - The Bobcaygeon Skating Club had another busy, successful season. When we hit the ice in October, we implemented the new Skate Canada CANskate program. It has proven to be a great change, with positive comments from skaters, parents, coaching staff and program assistants. On Mar. 1 and 2, we were in Campbellford for the annual interclub competition which included 13 local skating clubs. Our skaters brought home 20 medals, including 13 gold, four silver, and three bronze. We also had skaters in Barrie, Huntsville, Port Carling, Oshawa, Lindsay, and the Eastern Ontario StARskate Invitational Championship (EOSIC) in Cornwall. Many medals were won and personal bests were achieved but fun was always the name of the game. Don’t miss the Bobcaygeon Skating Club’s annual carnival, “Dancing with the Stars”, featuring a wide range of music but requires some audience involvement; we need you to vote for your favourites. Join us Friday, Mar. 28, at 7 p.m. at the Bobcaygeon Arena. Admission is $5, with children five & under free. The 65 skaters range in age from three to 15 and have been working hard over the season. Come on out and see the newest skaters make their debut, and the more accomplished skaters strut their stuff. The Bobcaygeon Skating Club wishes to thank the Bobcaygeon Legacy C.H.E.S.T.
