In the last edition, we criticized council for not going ahead with a ballot question - asking voters if they wanted fewer councillors – on the Oct. 27 municipal election ballot paper. We decided to run a Facebook poll asking readers “are you in favour of reducing the number of councillors?” – yes or no. We ran this over three days, Apr. 3, Apr. 4 and Apr. 7 and while not overwhelmed with responses, every single person who took the time to participate in our poll replied ‘yes’ with the exception of Ward 3 Coun. David Hodgson who commented “give people adequate information before asking them to respond to a poll” and “the poll is irrelevant if people don’t have all the facts.” The poll was not intended to garner councillor comments. Nor was it passed off as scientific in any way, shape or form. We simply wanted to give readers a chance to offer an opinion on this issue since
council will not. We would hope councillors would regard our poll as another piece of the puzzle in terms of what their constituents want as, I repeat, we were told by 100% of respondents that they want fewer councillors. While we are at it, this council should consider taking the bold stance of ensuring no mayor or councillor sits for more than two terms. Many on our current council won’t like this one either but we feel that it ensures healthy turn-over at the council table. If you can’t get done what you set out to do in eight years, it is probably time to step aside. The Kawartha Promoter is always happy to hear what readers, and voters, have to say. If you have an opinion on the number of councillors or a two-term limit, contact editor Lisa Gervais at editor@thepromoter.ca Happy Easter!

Quarry events continue
On behalf of myself and Ruth Pillsworth, we want to thank everyone who attended our talks on “Quarry Updates, telling our story.” We have been representing Citizens for Responsible Aggregate Development by speaking at Trinity United Church’s Lenten Caring for Water series, Environmental Action Bobcaygeon and at a general public meeting Mar. 29. Thanks to everyone for your amazing encouragement, support and interest. It is an important community issue that is not going to disappear any time soon. We will be telling our story again next at the Buckhorn Community Centre on Apr. 26 at 10 a.m. and tickets are still available for both Maude Barlow, renowned environmentalist, speaking 4 to 6 p.m. and the Eclectic G-Strings playing at a dance from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. at the Lakeview Arts Barn on April 19. Money raised will help fund our ability to stand strong before the province in May to protect our water, land and air. Purchase tickets at the Bobcaygeon Chamber of Commerce or Pillsworth Service Centre in Lindsay or at the door (if there are any left). See you there. Help us protect the Kawarthas. Load restrict roads
After reading the Municipal Bulletin dated Mar. 20, 2014, “City of Kawartha Lakes 2014 Load Restrictions” I feel compelled to write to you and voice my opinion. As a resident and business owner, I am appalled when I read “All roads within Village of Bobcaygeon will NOT be load restricted.” My concerns are: Highway 36/East Street, the
two bridges, already in disrepair, this will hasten the deterioration process. Does the city have a reserve to replace these two bridges and repair Highway 36? I would think not. If one or both bridges are deemed unsafe and closed, are we going to see a repeat of the Route 24 bridge, four years without a bridge? After Apr. 1, the Building Canada Fund will be slashed by almost 90%. No money from government for repair or rebuilding, so where would the city get the funds? In view of this, what is the city going to do about the quarry project north/east of the village of Bobcaygeon. The development of this quarry will have drastic consequences to the environment, our roads, bridges and services. Two-hundred and upwards of 400 trucks on a daily basis loaded with aggregate, will take the shortest route possible and that means through Bobcaygeon. The city should (short of banning these trucks) be very vocal and put very restrictive load restrictions on these trucks or force them to go north through Buckhorn. This truck traffic would have a very negative impact on our spring, summer and fall tourist season, with tourists avoiding this area and not wanting to deal with all this truck traffic and greater risk of an accident, quite possibly fatal. New Owners At Sheffield Greens The new owners of Sheffield Greens Golf Club are keen for the snow to melt so they can get the season underway at their picturesque nine-hole course only minutes from downtown Bobcaygeon. Tom and Anne Spence have purchased the course from long-time owners Fred and Sheila Read and are looking forward to trying a few new things but also getting feedback from golfers as to what they might want going forward. Formerly from Burlington, Tom and Anne (who have been married for 22 years and have two grown daughters, Ashlee and Jennifer) said they had always wanted to buy a home in the Bobcaygeon area. They have many close friends and have visited regularly over the last 25 years. They had not planned on purchasing a golf course but when they learned that Sheffield Greens was up for sale Tom couldn’t resist. Continuing is the Men’s Business League on Wednesdays and the Spence’s said that invitations to join are being mailed to last year’s players. They said that if you are interested in
joining or running a junior, ladies or men’s league or just have a group that likes to play on a regular basis, to get in touch with them. Another exciting plan for this year is the addition of a snack bar to the clubhouse, with light meals and refreshments. They are also planning to apply for a license to sell wine and beer. They will also sell family memberships as well as have a good introductory price for juniors. For those unfamiliar with the course, it is fairly flat and easy to walk; is nine holes with par 3s, 4s and a 5. It will appeal to retired people, those looking to play a local round after work, families, learners and people docking at the local marina. Tom and Anne said owning and operating a golf course presents a steep learning curve but Fred and Sheila have been helping with the transition and they are excited about their new adventure. Now they just need Mother Nature to cooperate. * Check them out: www.sheffieldgreensgolf.ca ; info@sheffieldgreensgolf.ca, 1596 Mill Line Rd., 705-738-2567
(continued from page 5) The safety of our seniors is another major concern. Many do not drive and walk on Highway 36/East Street and the possibility of a tragedy is high on the radar. Is the city ready to take full responsibility in the event of a major or fatal traffic accident? We already have enough truck traffic from our quarries and all other service trucks. We certainly don’t need anymore. Do we want to be known as by-pass truck town. Most of these trucks do not obey speed limits, another possible tragedy waiting to happen. Will they be able to stop and pull over in the event of an ambulance or fire truck heading down the road to an emergency, one possibly caused by one of these trucks?

The Apr. 8 regular council meeting lasted less than 30 minutes with only one item extracted for debate. Ward 7 Coun. Brian Junkin wanted council to simply receive a report on a transportation action plan under the poverty reduction strategy. Junkin He was reluctant to endorse all 13 recommendations set out in the report saying a couple of them had merit but the others did not represent a common sense approach. The 13 recommendations included everything from lobbying the provincial and federal governments for cheaper gas to Lindsay Transit and dial-a-ride discounts for low-income earners to car-pooling or shared ride programs. But Ward 6 Coun. Doug Elmslie argued that transportation challenges are one of the biggest barriers to reducing poverty in the city and Haliburton County. He suggested that Junkin was being “cavalier” in suggesting that people who move to rural areas for more affordable housing should have a transportation strategy in place. “Nobody is saying we are doing it tomorrow or we have to throw millions of dollars at it right now, “ Elmslie said. However, he thought it was important for council to get behind what he deems an integral part of the poverty reduction strategy. Junkin said he did not think it “cavalier” to suggest that by accessing affordable housing, people living further out from larger centres should have a transportation plan. By a recorded vote of 14-3, the transportation action plan was both received and endorsed.
OPP costs
Villemaire
As a ratepayer and business owner, I can truly say this is of great concern to most residents. I trust the city will do the right thing, by the electorate who have voted you in, and look out for the best interests and safety of the residents of Bobcaygeon, its vacationers and tourists. The city must stand firm in its decision. First option – ban or prevent these trucks from coming through town. Second option – set very serious and high load and speed restrictions. Third option – set a fee per ton to help pay for the deterioration of Highway 36 and the two bridges. Both option two and three would be unprofitable and a deterrent to drive through Bobcaygeon.
Ward 8 Coun. Donna Villemaire is leading a council task force looking into the high cost of OPP policing in the city and across the province. Villemaire is chair of the CPAC (Community Policing Advisory Committee
- OPP) and suggested a meeting that took place earlier this week with the local OPP so that the task force can assess the impact of the proposed billing model on city OPP costs and service levels. She said it is hoped the task force will have some recommendations for council.
LAKEVIEW WATER CO-OP update
In a letter tabled to the meeting, Environment Minister Jim Bradley says he will have two senior staff meet with the city over its Lakeview Water Coop concerns – namely an Order for the city to take over the drinking water system and bring it up to standard. Bradley said while he appreciates the efforts of city staff to work closely with the ministry and the co-op’s owners to find a cost-effective solution, voluntary efforts have been unsuccessful, necessitating the Order. However, he said he had asked chief drinking water inspector Sue Lo and deputy chief drinking water inspector Paul Nieweglowski to arrange a meeting with Mayor Ric McGee.

Veteran politician Runs
By Lisa Gervais He may be 67 years old but mayoral candidate John Macklem figures he’s still got some living to do. The Kawartha Promoter sat down with Macklem and his wife Darlene recently and the two commented about how many people pass away shortly after retiring. “I like living life and I will not give that up. The other option is not one that you want,” the Ward
1 councillor and the last Victoria County warden says with a chuckle. Macklem said he is in it to win it. He is all about financial accountability. He discusses his work as chairman of the budget advisory committee, which has spearheaded the last couple of council budgets to see a process that used to take days at council now whittled down to minutes and this year put $1.4 million back into reserves. Council is also doing a better job of closing projects with Macklem at the BAC head. “I’m there to make this community better and give the community a chance at a financial future we can all be proud of.” Sometimes knocked for not backing environmental projects, Macklem said “I want financial sustainability but we can’t go green until we figure out what it costs.” He said everyone knows the importance of getting federal and provincial money to remain sustainable and he keeps good relations. He also said he has the experience since he has worn the chains of office in the past, is a proven leader and is happy to let his credentials speak for themselves. He describes himself as “personable” and said he would love the job of mayor and would not find it difficult to do. “The issue for me is how do we create jobs and keep people employed, build the services that we need and deliver a clean environment?” • For more on Macklem’s platform, visit www.macklem.ca

LITTLE BRITAIN – Ward 8 Coun. Donna Villemaire is running for mayor. If elected she said via press release that she would bring a fresh new approach for the city to move forward. Coun. Villemaire made a point of stopping at Little Britain bakery, Buttertarts ’N More, on her way to filing her nomination papers. “Buttertarts ’N More is a business that started in my ward,” Villemaire said. “It has expanded outside my ward and I now plan to do the same,” she said with a smile. In her coming campaign, Villemaire said she plans to focus on community improvement issues that matter to residents, especially developing local businesses, promoting local agricultural initiatives and improving customer service at City Hall. “I first ran for council because of a road sign in my neighbourhood. I know how local government can work for people. As a councillor, I have obtained results for the people in my ward and now want to do so for our whole city moving forward,” she said. Having served on council for more than a decade, Villemaire said the municipality has faced many
challenges over the years. “Our communities need stability moving forward. We are on a good track and need someone with handson experience who cares and gets results to keep us moving forward.”

$3,800 from our first loonie auction so this year is an almost 60% increase. It was a very successful event with strong support from the local community. We had a country raffle before dinner and the live loonie auction after dinner. Auction items were donated by individuals and businesses with more than two dozen items in the loonie auction alone. Popular items included an iPad, Kindle, Keurig, photo printer, freezer meat package, power tools and one-of-a-kind, hand-crafted collectibles such as a wood rack, quilt, garden art sign etc. We had volunteers to cover everything from ticket sales to cooking to the auctioneering. We had chefs from Toronto; Rob and Andrea donated their time and talent to us to prepare our ham dinner. Doug Pearson from Kinmount was our auctioneer and he did a fabulous job of keeping things moving along and everyone laughing all night long. To date, including the amount raised at the 2014 loonie auction, The Fightin’ Fillies have raised $58,600. submitted by Christine Handley

Join us as we explore the homes and lives of the people who lived on Lime St. and their interaction with the lime kilns that were located at the intersection of Baseline and Lime St. This resource extraction industry was a major employer in Coboconk for the first half of the 20th century. There will be a photo display and we encourage folks to share their memories of the residential street as well as the Lime kilns. We are starting at 10 a.m. at the south end of Lime St. The tour leader will be Paul Zaborowski. Please mark your calendars and join us. Jane’s Walk is a movement of free locally led walks, inspired by Jane Jacobs. She was an influential urban planner and community activist whose ideas impacted on city planners worldwide. The walks take place on an international scale every year on the first weekend in May in honour of her birthday, May 5. medical centre one day. A Med Bash is being held Saturday, Apr. 26 in Bobcaygeon to help Dr. Mike Fagan offset tuition costs as he nears completion of medical school in early 2015 and then begins his residency. Michael is the son of the late Dr. James Fagan, who passed away in May of 2011. A chiropractor, he is now undergoing training to do family medicine in the village, commencing practice in 2017. Hotel groundbreaking
LINDSAY – This time next year, a new Days Inn and Suites should be open on Angeline St. S. in Lindsay. A groundbreaking ceremony was held Apr. 7 for the long anticipated hotel that will be near Lindsay landmarks such as the recreational complex, Fleming’s Frost Campus and the LEX. There were local investors and people from the hotel chain on hand for the media event. The $8 million hotel will be four storeys, have 75 rooms and suites, a breakfast area, meeting and event space, a fitness centre and indoor pool. “It’s been a long time coming but we are going to get a brand hotel in the City of Kawartha Lakes,” said Don Brown, owner of Mariposa Electric and chairman of CKL Hotels Inc. (There is a Howard Johnson in Lindsay). Brown said it was hoped that as many contractors as possible could come from the local area and that, when opened, the hotel will employ 30-35 people. He said it will also attract people coming to Lindsay-based events to stay in town rather than in Peterborough and that is another plus for the local economy. Elke Danziger, wife of the late Richard Danziger, who was an integral part of the project, was on hand for the ceremony and CKL Hotels’ Brad Bird said a suite would be named after Richard. “We are very much looking forward to getting going,” Brown said.
“We are thrilled to welcome Days Inn & Suites - Lindsay to the Realstar Hospitality family, further expanding our portfolio of Days Inn hotels across Canada,” said David Blades, vice president of operations, “Congratulations to everyone involved in this project. We look forward to the hotel’s grand opening which will help generate economic growth and employment.” Photo Right: Elke Danziger and Brad Bird hold shovels at the groundbreaking of the new Days Inn and Suites at 134 Angeline St. S. in Lindsay. and reward those individuals whose community contributions and personal achievements are held in high esteem by their fellow businesspeople, friends and neighbours. Unlike those Hollywood extravaganzas, the evening comes with a delicious turkey-with-allthe-trimmings dinner, convivial conversations and chances to bid on some pretty neat items in the silent auction. And it’s all available for the small sum of just $45, with tickets at the chamber’s Canal St. E. office and The Village Florist, 73-A Bolton St. Being held at the Dunsford Community Centre on Saturday, Apr. 26, this year’s event has already attracted a number of nominees in these categories: L.E. “Ted” Shea Memorial Award (Citizen of the Year), Roberta “Robbie” DeClute Memorial Award (Business Leader of the Year), Robert “Bob” Jokinen Memorial Award (Outstanding Business Achievement), Charles “Charlie” Devenish Memorial Award (Outstanding Service/Volunteer Organization), Daniel Snider Memorial Award (Outstanding Youth) and Monk Funeral Services Ltd. Award (Employee of the Year). Overall, and a testament to what a wonderful group our people are, is the fact that the names of 18 nominees were received by the closing date. The event has been on-going for more than 15 years, proving, as the saying goes, the well isn’t dry, not by a long shot.

Easter Downtown Fenelon Falls celebrates Easter
The Fenelon Falls special events committee of the chamber of commerce is again hosting an Easter celebration and shopping event in downtown Fenelon Falls on Saturday (Apr.19) from 9 a.m. until noon. Downtown merchants hold activities for children and run various sales and special promotions for adults to help residents spring into the season and shake off the cold. The event is free as it is sponsored by the businesses of Fenelon Falls. This year the event will feature a special Easter hunt where the children search the town and receive
tokens at participating downtown merchants. Once they have collected the tokens, they bring them to Easter Bunny headquarters at 10 Water St. and redeem them for special Easter treat bags. The Easter Bunny will be on location and has many fun activities planned for the children, such as face painting, balloon twister, games and lots of special treats. Children will not want to miss this event and participating stores will get into the spirit and do fun things too. Follow the Fenelon Falls Special Events on Facebook for updates on the fun.

EGG SAFETY
Decorated eggs that have been left out on display are not safe to eat. If you want to eat eggs that you decorate, they should be hard boiled thoroughly and cooled (either by immersing in cold tap water or on the counter until they have reached room temperature) before putting them in the refrigerator. Use a nontoxic colouring dye on eggs. Be sure that eggs are kept cold before and after they are dyed. Between cooling and dyeing, they should be out of the refrigerator for no more than two hours in total. Coloured hard-boiled eggs can be stored in a sealed container in the refrigerator for up to one week.
Painting Easter Eggs
Painting Easter eggs is fun and easy to do. Lots of people buy egg decorating kits but you can make beautiful Easter eggs with supplies out of your own cupboard. What you need: You need: eggs, a saucepan,

food colouring, vinegar, tape or rubber bands, tongs or slotted spoon, an empty egg carton, old clothes or an apron and newspapers with the option of white wax crayons and stickers Once you’ve gathered your supplies, it’s time to get cracking making your own beautifully designed Easter eggs. But before you can start dipping, you’ll need to start by prepring. Prepping: • Step 1: Fill saucepan with water, place on the stove and add your eggs. Bring water to a boil and then reduce the heat and let the eggs simmer for 10 minutes. Remove from heat and add cold water to stop the eggs from cooking - you may need to ask your parents or teacher to help with this part.
• Step 2: Make sure you’re wearing an apron or old clothes, because this is one Easter activity that can get messy. Also place old newspapers over the area you’ll be painting on. • Step 3: Fill cups halfway with hot water, add one teaspoon of vinegar and one teaspoon of food coloring, one for each color you want to use. Design and Dip: Once your eggs and dye are ready, place the egg in the color you want, leave it for five minutes and when you lift it out with your tongs you will have a perfectly dyed egg. But that’s not all, before you start dipping, there are lots of different ways to create different patterns with your eggs, here are just a few ideas that you can mix and match. (Easter egg

kits come with dye tablets, but you can use plain old food coloring) • Using a white crayon, write a message or draw a design on the egg before you dip it - when it comes out of the dye the wax will remain white, highlighting the design against the colored background. • You can create stripey designs on your egg by placing rubber bands or tape around your egg before dipping, when you raise it from the dye and remove the bands your egg will have stripes where the bands were. • If you place a sticker on the egg before dipping and remove it once it comes out, the shape of the sticker will stand out against the background, try using a star, a fruit or heart if you have it. • Once you’ve lifted your eggs from the dye, place them gently in the empty egg carton to dry. Once they’re dry you can hide them for a hunt, place them in a decorative basket, or if you’re really hungry, eat them.

Cutting red tape
The Government of Canada recently highlighted what it deems to be progress on reducing red tape, and recent improvements that have been made to the Canada Revenue Agency’s (CRA) online services. As part of the government’s Red Tape Reduction Action Plan, the Government of Canada has launched a number of service enhancements and measures to reduce red tape for businesses, including several introduced in Economic Action Plan 2014, which the CRA will implement over the next year: • I n April 2014, the CRA’s electronic filing services will be expanded to allow businesses to file amended T2 corporate income tax returns online and representatives for businesses will be able to submit an electronic authorization request to the CRA instead of filing paper forms. • In October 2014, businesses will be able to update their banking and direct deposit information online, and the first free online option for paying taxes will be available for business owners registered with My Business Account. A detailed payment history for all of their accounts will also be available in one

secure and convenient place. • The government is revising remittance thresholds for employer source deductions to reduce the maximum number of payments that businesses are required to prepare and submit to the CRA. • Economic Action Plan 2014 will simplify tax rules for the lifetime capital gains exemption when certain individuals operate both farming and fishing businesses to allow for more consistent treatment. • The government will continue to build partnerships with the small business community as well as provincial and municipal governments on initiatives such as the CRA’s Business Number, the recently announced Liaison Officer Initiative (LOI) pilot project and the proposed Registration of Tax Preparers Program (RTPP), all intended to support taxpayers to more easily manage their tax affairs and “get it right from the start.”
Tax tips for self-employed
As a self-employed individual, you and your spouse or common-law partner have until midnight on Monday, June 16, 2014, because June 15, 2014 falls on a Sunday, to file your 2013 income tax and benefit return. But don’t forget - you must pay any balance

owing for 2013 on or before Apr. 30, 2014, regardless of your filing date. Important facts: • If you earned self-employment income from a business you operate yourself or with a partner, you have to report it. For more information, go to www.cra.gc.ca/selfemployed. •K eep thorough records if you own a business or are engaged in a commercial activity. The records have to give enough detail to determine the taxes you owe and support the benefits you are claiming, and they must be supported by original documents. • If you receive income that has no tax withheld or does not have enough tax withheld for more than one year, you may have to pay tax by instalments. This can happen if you receive rental, investment, or self-employment income, certain pension payments, or income from more than one job. For more information, go to www. cra.gc.ca/instalments.
No income to report? File anyway
The Canada Revenue Agency says that even if you have no income to report for 2013, you should still file your income tax and benefit return by Apr. 30 to be eligible to receive certain tax credits and benefits on time.
Eligibility for certain benefit payments is based on information from your yearly tax return. If you don’t file your income tax and benefit return, you could miss out on these credits and benefits. For example: • the goods and services tax/harmonized sales tax (GST/HST) credit and integrated provincial and territorial programs; • the Canada child tax benefit (CCTB) and integrated provincial and territorial programs. If you have a spouse or common-law partner, they must also file a return for you to receive your benefit payment; and • the universal child care benefit (UCCB). Keep any receipts and documents for at least six years. If the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) reviews your return, you will need your receipts to support your claims.
Heartbleed update
The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) says all of its online systems have been restored to full service. Individuals, businesses and representatives are now able to file returns, make payments, and access all other e-services through the CRA’s website, including all of its secure portals. Individual tax returns for 2013 filed by May 5 (rather than the Apr. 30 deadline) will not incur interest or penalties, the CRA said.

Choristers Corner
Fourteen years ago, Barb Dunleavey had a dream to start a choir in Bobcaygeon. One evening when she was at the Legion she heard some people singing and proclaimed “there is my choir.” The late George Hedge was also there and told Barb “you bring the people and I will direct.” The Bobcaygeon Choristers has come a long way from a handful of people to a choir of approximately 40 members. On Apr. 15, the choristers held a small celebration at the Legion after a short practice with a glass ofREVISED wine and a social time to reflect over the past HALF 14 years.PAGE Scrapbooks AD were there for members toKawartha peruse and Promoter remember past directors, George Hedge, who had to step down for health reasons followed by Janice Craig, who resigned and made way for Bob Plummer. Piano accompanists Nona Erskine, during George’s time, and Ruth Eberts under the direction of Janice were honoured as well as members who have come and gone over
the years due to some reason or another. It is good to have a record of everything that the group has accomplished in 15 years: annual events, such as performing at the Poppy Tea at the Legion and being part of the Remembrance Day service at the Cenotaph on Nov. 11; singing Oh Canada to Unlock the Summer and visits to nursing homes. We have the highlights of performing the national anthem at a Blue Jays game at the Rogers Centre and taking part in a seniors concert at the Academy Theatre in Lindsay along with many local concerts, entertaining at various lunches and dinners and other events too numerous to mention. The Choristers are proud to have been named Bobcaygeon’s musical ambassadors and look forward to the future to live up to that honour. If you would like to help them to do this, are looking for a new venture and enjoy singing, contact any Chorister or call Bob Plummer at 705-731-1060.
United Way tops $450,000
LINDSAY - Dressed as superheroes, eight people turned to face the crowd at the United Way’s touchdown event Apr. 3, revealing that donors had raised $456,219 in the 2013-2014 campaign. Campaign co-chair Mike Perry said “we’ve done great things again this year” but “it doesn’t stop here. The need is too great.” “We have a lot of great workplaces and individuals,” executive director Penny Barton Dyke said, with Perry commenting that the workplace campaigns remains “the bread and butter” of United Way funding. Perry and co-chair Max Miller led a ‘cabinet’ of high profile individuals this year, setting the groundwork for growing donor levels and establishing a major gifts program. Perry added that he and Miller had also “really met our goal of expanding outside the Lindsay area.” Miller said: “Every day we have heroes who help people, help our families and help our neighbours. Those heroes are donors, volunteers and, of course, the agencies who deliver face-to-face help every day. We thank you.” United Way currently funds 14 agencies and more than 40 programs. More than $3.5 million has been invested in our local agencies since 2001. In addition, the United Way has invested more than $840,000 into community initiatives since 2005. Photo Below: Campaign co-chairs Mike Perry and Max Miller applaud as the superheroes reveal the amount raised during the 2013-2014 United Way for the City of Kawartha Lakes campaign. NEW NAME, NEW OWNERS
Stone Gate Greenhouses Inc., should be overrun with keen gardeners come May 1 when they open for the season under their new name and new ownership. Adri and Tim Eastman have taken over the business, formerly Meadowbrook Greenhouses, from Lynn and Bill Scott. After a 2013 season closure, they can’t wait to again service local gardening needs. Adri worked for the Scott’s for seven years and it has always been her dream to run a greenhouse, so much so that she went back to school at the age of 38 to study horticulture. The Scott’s are helping with the transition as well. And with staff from the Scott days returning, and Adri’s education, customers not only get large custom hanging baskets, already made-up patio planters and plants, but the knowledge that comes with them to ensure beautiful gardens across the City of Kawartha Lakes. Adri and Tim said they will not make major changes since the Scott’s business was running very well at 247 Cosh’s Rd., first concession, west of Bobcaygeon, off of CKL Road 8. They plan to open Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The idea is to remain open until the end of June. Because it is a short season, the Eastman’s started working back in January, seeding and getting ready for the grand opening. They also have a potting station for customers to do their own potting up of Goldfisch geraniums, begonias and bedding plants. Adri said the key is growing their own plants right in the greenhouse rather than bringing plants in.

Horoscopes Aries (March 21 to April 20) Be wary of social media, Aries, in the coming days. Perhaps it is time to take a break from this form of communication for a while. Is it really how you wish to spend your precious time? Please do not trust everyone you encounter through this medium. Misinterpretations abound. Taurus (April 21 to May 21) It’s time to give your thumbs a good greening! Get out and dig in the dirt, Taurus. Plant some seeds, nourish them, and see them flourish. It’s good for the soul! Gemini (May 22 to June 22) Meditation: an ancient art of soothing the inner spirit. Have you tried it, Gemini? We suggest you do. You will be needing some personal strength in the coming weeks to keep calm during a rocky period, so it’s worth a try. Cancer (June 23 to July 23) Many religions celebrate the awakenings, fertility and new growth of the spring at this time. It’s a wonderful time of year, and we’ve waited so long this past winter! We urge you to celebrate your own unique feelings and possibly realize some new beginnings in your life, dear Cancer.
April 18 - May 2, 2014 Melodie McCullough
Leo (July 24 to Aug. 23) The spring sky is dominated by the constellation Leo. We sense you are headed in the right direction, dear Leo! You have taken control of your life and you have made positive changes, lately. Hang on to this momentum and reach for the stars! Virgo (Aug. 24 to Sept. 23) It is said that worry throughout life is one of the biggest contributors to dementia at the end of one’s life. You need to stop the “worrying habit” now, Virgo! Many things are beyond control, and it does absolutely nothing to improve a situation. Libra (Sept. 24 to Oct. 23) “Surely the true definition of courage is to do the thing you are afraid to do.”: Georgia Binnie Clark (Canadian farmer, 1871 – 1947). So, Libra … what are you afraid of? Perhaps you can take a tiny step each day to overcome this fear. Each day will add up to months, and before you know it, your courage will be true! Scorpio (Oct. 24 to Nov. 22) Don’t let petty squabbles destroy a valued relationship, Scorpio. Calm down and work towards a reasonable resolution for all concerned parties. Also, the aqua colour will play an important role in your love life during this phase.
Sagittarius (Nov. 23 to Dec. 21) Ah, the end is in sight! All your hard work is about to pay off! Get ready for some nice, relaxing days ahead. You’ve learned your lessons well! Capricorn (Dec. 22 to Jan. 20) Beautiful butterflies have emerged from their overwintering hideaways; local wetlands are alive with the clamourous calls of spring peepers; turtles come out of hibernation; the first wildflowers bloom; everywhere new life brims. Capricorn, you, too, can be a part of this! Shed your winter doldrums. Luxuriate in the newness of you. Aquarius (Jan. 21 to Feb. 19) You must be open and honest with your partner, and, of course, your partner must return the favour. If there are any secrets in the relationship, now is the time to think seriously about them, weigh your decisions cautiously and decide your course of action. Pisces (Feb. 20 to March 20) We sense you are searching for the answer to that important question in your life, dear Pisces. It will not be found while skulking around your bed room with the door closed! Get out and converse with people. Share your concerns and share your dreams. The most important thing you can do find someone to talk to.

by John Bick Bobcaygeon & District Horticultural Society Spring is gradually happening in the Kawarthas. Usually by now, we have seen the first flush of spring bulbs. But this year only those planted in sheltered locations where the snow melts first have been able to burst forth. Nature is taking its time as pussy willows, colt’s foot and skunk cabbage are only now appearing. The spring bird migration is underway with the regular early species being sighted. While we may be tempted to put away the feeders, keep feeding for the next while because many local birds are over stressed from the long, hard winter and the migrating ones use up enormous energy getting here. Every gardener knows the value of attracting birds, so keep them around. Now is the time to start checking for winter damage. This year there is a lot of winter burn on garden evergreens such as juniper and yew. When the winter sun reflects off the snow onto an evergreen shrub, the dark green foliage quickly absorbs the heat. Then the sun goes behind the clouds or sets and the warm foliage is suddenly frozen again. This results in severe browning of needles and even death of some of the twigs. Dry winter winds have the same effect. The ice storms did damage as well. Fortunately our large trees in this area did not suffer the same destruction as those further south where the ice accumulation was greater.

Health & Wellness New nurse practitioner
The Kawartha North Family Health Team (KNFHT) has announced that Nurse Practitioner Krista Kennedy will join their team starting Apr. 21. In a press release, KNFHT said Krista’s place on the team “not only cements its commitment to Dr. McLaren’s patients, to ensure continuity of care, it’s another step on our more ambitious plan to transform health care delivery in our region.” The KNFHT said recent developments in the plan have included the expansion of walk-in clinic services to Fenelon Falls, augmenting the afterhours care already provided in Bobcaygeon, as well as the rollout of new health and wellness-focused services. “To this end, we are continuing to build our medical team and the kinds of tailored programs that we offer to meet the needs of our community. We are committed to keeping you updated on exciting news to come as it unfolds, including what we are confident will be further additions to our physician and nurse-practitioner team,” the press release stated. Community Cares
Now that nicer weather appears to be here to stay, people involved with the Community Care Adult Day Program are looking forward to seasonal undertakings that will include excursions and outdoor activities. While the program has operated continuously throughout the winter, staff and clients surely appreciate the chance to be a little more active outside of the agency’s Adult Day facilities. Adult Day programming is just one of the many services in Community Care’s “basket” of community support services. The Adult Day program offers activation, social interaction and caregiver respite, through a range of supervised social, physical and recreational activities. The program is designed to meet the needs of each client and is presently offered several times per week in Bobcaygeon, Fenelon Falls, Lindsay, Little Britain and Omemee.
The service is for frail seniors, individuals with memory impairment or people with physical disabilities. In addition to a safe, supportive environment for clients, Adult Day gives caregivers a break from their caregiving role. The program is co-ordinated by experienced staff and volunteers who ensure that clients receive high quality support, which includes but is not limited to: hobbies and crafts, exercise, games and activities, discussion groups, musical entertainment, sensory stimulation, special events and parties. Hot lunches and nutritional snacks are served each day and rates are affordable. Transportation may also be arranged for an additional fee. Adult Day activities certainly helped many clients get through the long winter months by giving them a change of scenery and social opportunities, but the fun is just about to begin. Spring and summer offers many chances for clients to enjoy the outdoors and to get around easier. Anyone wishing more information about Adult Day programs can contact the agency at 705-324-7323. Be keen to screen
Cancer screening saves lives, and with that in mind, local residents are encouraged to put themselves to the test. The Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ridge District Health Unit is advising people to take advantage of publicly-funded screening procedures available in Ontario for breast, cervical and colorectal cancer. These are common forms of cancer that, if caught early, can greatly improve people’s chances of surviving the disease, says Elsie Azevedo, a registered dietitian with the health unit whose work also includes supporting cancer awareness and prevention programs. “In the early stages, breast cancer, cervical

cancer and colorectal cancer can be impossible to see or feel,” she says. “Regular screening is important to catch these cancers early, improving the chances that they can be treated.” Research shows that regular screening for breast, cervical, and colorectal cancer saves lives. Cancer continues to be a leading cause of death across Ontario and in the health unit region, which includes Haliburton County, Northumberland County and the City of Kawartha Lakes. According to Azevedo, being screened for breast, cervical or colorectal cancer is especially important for people 50 years of age and older.
MEASLES WARNING
In the wake of nearly a dozen measles cases being reported elsewhere in Ontario, local health officials want people here to take precautions against a very contagious disease. The Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ridge District Health Unit is urging local residents to check that their vaccinations against measles are up-todate. People born in 1970 or later are advised to ensure they have been vaccinated against measles. Individuals born prior to 1970 were likely exposed to measles and are usually considered immune. However, people travelling outside North America, health care workers and military groups may require measles vaccination regardless of age. So far in 2014, no confirmed measles cases have been reported to local health unites. While rare, Linda McCarey, the director of communicable disease control with the health unit said “we still do see measles cases in this country, often related to travel to other countries where measles is more common. This is just a reminder that we need to ensure that our vaccinations are upto-date. With global travel, the world is becoming a smaller place and diseases have no boundaries.” In Ontario, the Measles, Mumps and Rubella (MMR) vaccine is publicly funded and typically given to children in two doses. The first dose is given soon after a child’s first birthday, while the second is given at 18 months of age (or at four to six years of age in some cases). Vaccination against measles, mumps and rubella is required by law for all children attending school in Ontario, unless there is a valid exemption on file with the Health Unit. If people are uncertain about their vaccination status, McCarey advises they check their records. If still unsure about the vaccines they have received,
people should contact their health care provider or the health unit at 1-866-888-4577. Local health care providers have also been alerted to be watchful for measles, especially in people returning from overseas trips.
Caregiver Recognition Initiative Launched
Community Care City of Kawartha Lakes has launched an initiative to salute the hard work and important role of family members and friends who are caregivers. It is estimated that at some point in their lives, nearly half (46%) of Canadians will provide care to a family member or friend with aging needs, a disability or long-term health condition. Such family caregivers have been referred to as the “invisible backbone of the health care system,” often providing the majority of care needed by individuals with long-term conditions. CEO Catherine Danbrook said the ‘Champion Caregivers Recognition Program’ will give caregivers a chance to tell their stories, and help raise awareness of caregivers. A caregiver can be a person who provides ongoing care and assistance, without pay, for family members or friends in need of support due to physical, cognitive or mental health conditions. These caregiver roles are becoming increasingly important as the population ages. The initiative will culminate with the publishing of selected caregiver stories in October, which is Community Health and Support Month. For further information, or to receive a kit to tell your own caregiving story, contact Community Care at 705-324-7323 ext 162 or 232.

Peacefully in his stall, with an odd smile on his face, Beuk moved on to greener pastures, free from Cushings Disese. Never special of breed but huge of heart... just two weeks prior he carried me around the arena with pride. A soulmate and forever a character, he will be missed by all, in particular his mate Lucky of 25 years and Barnie “his” cat. Heartfelt thanks to Al & Sheila, Becky and W&G Landscaping for carrying him with dignity, to his favourite tree/scratcher, where he now rests. Special thanks to Dr. Judith Koenig OVC, Dr. Rosemarie Bahr, the team at Victoria Vet, Steve Reid and Louise. We were so fortunate to share 25 years. Kim & Bruce & “family”.

Spring is in the Air!
With the days finally warming up, Kawartha Settlers’ Village is starting to come alive. On Apr. 3 and 4 we hosted three classes from Bobcaygeon Public School for our Maple Syrup Festival. The students were taught the history of maple syrup and the process of making it. They participated in tapping the trees and using a yoke to carry buckets to a fire where they watched the sap boil. After all their hard work, they enjoyed a delicious pancake breakfast prepared by our wonderful volunteers. Thank you to Al Ingram, Russ Lee, John Bick, Jim Telford, Louise Plante, Jean Pogue, Sylvia Reinecker, Laura Plummer, Nicholette Thomas, Ron Lessor, Catherine Junkin and Kathleen Shea Gehmair for making the day enjoyable for the students. Earth Day is fast approaching and while we are not hosting an event this year, we will be participating in the activities being held at Gamiing Nature Centre on Saturday, Apr. 19. Be sure to stop by and visit our booth. Join us on Sunday, May 5 for our annual general meeting which will be held in the Henderson House board room. We will be reviewing our 2013 audited financial statements, honouring retiring directors and swearing in new board members. This is a great opportunity to hear about our 2013 year and our plans for 2014. Lastly, we are encouraging everyone

Pieter says ‘cheese’ once again
Bobcaygeon cheesemaker Pieter van Oudenaren’s cheesy grin graced the pages of the Toronto Star last week after cheeses he made for Mariposa Dairy in Lindsay were judged tops in the very first Canadian Cheese Awards competition last week in Toronto Mariposa won Best Goat’s Milk Cheese and Best Sheep’s Milk Cheese. Pieter is shown with his award-winning cheeses in the spread. They are a sheep’s milk cheese called Lenberg Farms Reserve by Celebrity Tania Sheep Cheese and a goat’s cheese called Lenberg Farms Classic Reserve by Celebrity Lindsay Bandaged Cheddar.
building conviction
TORONTO - New Frontier Homes and Cottages and Harry Lebbenga from Bobcaygeon have been fined $37,500 in Lindsay Provincial Offences Court for failing to register as a builder and failing to enrol four homes with Tarion Warranty Corporation, Tarion said in a news release. It said Lebbenga was fined for acting as a party to the offence by aiding and abetting New Frontiers Homes and Cottages Inc. Speaking after the Apr. 4, decision, Tarion’s director of enforcement Dave Roberts said “Building and selling new homes if you are not a registered builder is illegal in Ontario. Unfortunately, it is often the homeowners who suffer when they unknowingly purchase an illegally built home. Home buyers should always search Tarion’s ‘Ontario Builder Directory’ to make sure they are buying a home from a registered builder.” Under the Ontario New Home Warranties Plan Act (“the Act”) home-builders are required to register as a builder and enrol every new home with Tarion before construction. Tarion protects the rights of new homebuyers by regulating the home building industry, and administering and guaranteeing the province’s new home warranty program. Part of Tarion’s mandate is to find and prosecute illegal builders to ensure new home buyers in Ontario receive the warranty coverage they are entitled to by law. Home buyers can search Tarion’s “Ontario Builder Directory” on Tarion.com to ensure they are dealing with a registered builder.
