Paper Cuts Navigation

How is it going? We’re almost half way through 2013. What’s the best part so far? Still cheering each other on? Still doing what you can to brighten up others’ days? Last Sunday, we were on one of our walks around the village when we met Harold Way and his sidekick, Chance. Moments earlier, we had heard the rumble of what turned out to be an antique tractor. The sound was overpowered by the unmistakable howl of a beagle as the tractor, driver and “navigator dog” chugged over the Main Street bridge. There we saw Chance securely perched on the tractor, as he alerted all of their approach. Brilliant. He greeted everyone who was within earshot. Visitors or local residents, it didn’t matter to Chance. He was just out there doing what he loves to do. I don’t know what makes some people go out of their way to make others feel happy. I just know they do. We’ve talked about who inspires you, and more importantly, whom it is you inspire with your words, demeanor, your presence. If you have kids, you

know they’re influenced by your attitudes and actions. Note: kids don’t fall for the double-standard routine — not in the long haul, they don’t. Eventually, they do grow up and hopefully think for themselves — that is when they think either, “Ah!” or “Yikes!” This is the anniversary of my first Paper Cuts for The Promoter. I’ve enjoyed feedback from our readers since the beginning and you should know how meaningful it is that you connect in the many ways you do. During the course of my first year in Bobcaygeon, I’ve seen the efforts and results of countless individuals and groups who work tirelessly to strengthen our communities and improve the quality of life for everyone. One thing I never tire of hearing about is the ways local business people support and promote each other. And why wouldn’t we? We are all in this together. Go ahead — boast about your neighbour. Support all of the local businesses and services we can. Reach out. Speak up. Howl if you must. Navigate your way to the positive side and watch who follows. Just don’t let up — we can never have enough Chances.

Property Resale Values Important to Trent Lakes Council

I have just read the newspaper article in the Herald this week that reports a local citizen who approached Bev Mathews of Trent Lakes Council with a concern that their property would not sell because the house next door is a “dump.” Our council is supportive and will now enforce property standards. Can we all be encouraged? When many of us try to sell our homes because of the many quarries that will surround us, we also will come to council for help. When our local water is polluted from industry run off, when local roads are overrun with trucks hauling stone, when the air is thick with dust, when the traffic on highway 36 is horrendous, when the noise from blasting is bothersome for miles and our taxes have been raised from the need to repair roads and all of these factors are effecting our ability to resell our homes, we are comforted knowing that Trent Lakes Council will stand behind us and help

us to resolve these obstacles to resell. I hesitate to name any specific quarry because as the years go on and this council continues to “rubber stamp” any quarry application that passes their desk, a neighbour with a “messy yard” will be the least of our worries. There is a municipal Election Oct. 2014. Let’s be sure our newly elected officials truly represent our interests as far as quarry development in Trent Lakes. Janet Klein Nogies Creek

There are in fact two possible solar projects in the Dunsford area that are under consideration by Council. They did concede however that due to capacity issues probably only one would likely go forward. They conceded that an independent soil scientist rated the soil of these lands as class 4, 5, and 6. During a feisty question period many of the Councillors were vocally skeptical about how much prime agricultural land would be subjected to the project. There were also concerns raised about who would be responsible for returning the areas to their original state at the completion of the 20 year life span of the project. Morin assured Council that they would be responsible to either repower the project or, failing that, to return the land to its previous state. Ward 8 Councillor Donna Villemaire moved for the deferral to the May 28 council meeting with a report from the agricultural development advisory board. The issue was deferred to the May 28 session of Council.

k “The moment you step into our retail location, you will know there is an artistic visionary adventure about to happen.” – Kate Westcott, Certified Interior Decorator Kate Westcott’s retail experience is 37 years and counting. Her career, she says, was always related to decorating. It was last August when she decided it was time to work for herself. So it was. Kate & Co. celebrated its Grand Opening on May 2, 2013. The store has an elegant, inviting atmosphere. With artistically displayed merchandise, Kate says she offers items ranging in price from $5 to $1000. In her words: “We feature comfortable contemporary furniture and accessories from

Canadian designers and television personalities Steven Sabados and Chris Hyndman. Also, colourful accents from designer, Cobi Ladner, one of Canada’s top design authorities and former editor of Canadian House and Home magazine. Kate utilizes her extensive product knowledge and blends it with the fine art of customer service. “I have always believed, one hundred percent, what you put out you get back. I treat people the way I want to be treated.” What’s on the Kate & Co. horizon? “In the fall,” she says, “I will host seminars and workshops on alternate months.” They won’t focus exclusively on decorating, but all topics will pertain to the home. That includes food since the store also features delicious products from Warkworth’s Sprucewood Handmade Cookie Co. “We believe our customers want more than a retail store. We are a unique blend of decorating accessory items, workshops and seminars and in-home consulting. To complete it all, some of our best products will be available for purchase from our web site in the near future.”

WATEROPOLIS Tried & Tested In Kawartha Lakes

In the last issue, Mayor McGee introduced me and my role in the development of the Water Research & Innovation Network (WRAIN). Here’s a little more about me and how WRAIN is supporting economic growth in the water industry (a $424 billion global market). I grew up just outside of Bobcaygeon; my dad built our home overlooking Pigeon Lake. I now live in Lindsay with my husband, Joe, and our son, Colby. After graduating from Trent University, I held

marketing positions at a seed distributor (Rothwell Seeds, Lindsay), a marketing agency (PDG, Toronto) and an international manufacturer (EHC Global, Oshawa). After 14+ years of commuting, I was thrilled to accept the Manager of Innovation position at the City of Kawartha Lakes to be able to spend more time with my family as well as having the opportunity to share my experience with local companies looking to expand their businesses. On May 27th, we are officially launching WRAIN at ‘Discovery’ – Canada’s leading innovation-to-commercialization conference, showcasing leading-edge technologies, best practices and cutting edge research. Our attendance at ‘Discovery’ is supported by the Government of Canada through the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario and KLCFDC. With the support of the Ontario Trillium Foundation, the Ontario Open Fiddle and Step Dance Contest are presenting a concert with Karen Reed and Crossbow at the Knox Presbyterian Church Hall on Saturday, June 8 at 7 pm. Karen Reed was born and raised in Sudbury, Ontario. A member of the renowned musical Reed family, she began her career at the age of four. Karen studied classical accordion under the tutelage of her aunt, World Accordion Champion, Iona Reed and learned to play the fiddle from her father, Ron Reed. Karen went on to earn numerous titles as Fiddle Champion. The band has Karen Reed on the fiddle, Trina Nadeau on the cello, Jake Butineau on keys and features champion step dancer Devan Ballagh also on fiddle, bodhran and mandolin. Musical arrangements by this multi-talented band are an awe-inspiring, refreshing approach to the traditional fiddling genre. Tickets at $10 are available at 10 King, My Favourite Things in Bobcaygeon. For further information call Joyce at 705.738.9171.

Aries (March 21 to April 20) Aries in love? Quite possibly! Remember where there is smoke there is fire, so if you sense a smoldering in the air we say search it out and fan the flames!

Leo (July 24 to Aug. 23) Leo, dear, Leo! We applaud your strategy to “take a breather”. It never hurts to slow down and reassess a situation. So climb up that tree, look as far as the eye can see, and you will gain a great perspective!

to support and comfort you. And, of course, there will come a day when you willingly return the favour. Sagittarius (Nov. 23 to Dec. 21) Your employers value your commitment and hard work, even though they may not always show it, Sag. Don’t let them down. Keep up the great effort.

Taurus (April 21 to May 21) A musical composition has many parts to it – crescendos, decrescendos, fortissimos, pianissimos, prestos and tranquillo – much like life itself! There are the ups and downs, the fast happy times and the slow tranquilities. Yet with a fine-tuned orchestra at play, the piece comes together in a magnificent climax. Never fear, Taurus – just enjoy the tune.

Virgo (Aug. 24 to Sep. 23) Money may play an important role in your life in the near future, Virgo. If someone asks to borrow some, perhaps you should just give them some wise advice instead. Investments can be costly, so choose your ventures with care.

Capricorn (Dec. 22 to Jan. 20) “Family is not an important thing. It’s everything.” – Michael J. Fox. Connect with your family, Capricorn. Love them, for who they are, not who you wish them to be. While others come and go, we will always be irrevocably bound to our family.

Gemini (May 22 to June 22) We saw a car bumper sticker the other day which read “I’d rather be … here right now.” We couldn’t agree more! Gemini, do you find yourself always wishing you were somewhere else? Where life is somehow always sweeter? We urge you to experience and feel each and every moment in which you find yourself. Life is what you make it.

Libra (Sept. 24 to Oct. 23) Physical exertion is one of the best (and least expensive) ways to ward off panic or stress. With the release of endorphins into your bloodstream from exercising, your body naturally fights depression, experiences creativity and elevates your mood. Libra – get going now! Walk, run, swim, canoe, kayak, bike, whatever you like – it will be worth it. (You could start with Bigley’s 3rd annual 5K Walk for the Cause June 1 at 10:30 a.m.)

Aquarius (Jan. 21 to Feb. 19) If you look to the sky, Aquarius, you will see Arcturus, the star that heralded the arrival of spring. It is now the brightest star in the sky. Could be you as well, Aquarius? Shine your light strong and clear for all to witness!

Cancer (June 23 to July 23) Time for a break, dear Cancer? Yes, indeed! Take some time off from work or whatever is burdening you. Travel. It doesn’t have to be far – just make it count.

Scorpio (Oct. 24 to Nov. 22) Don’t be afraid to call on friends when you need help, Scorpio. True friends will always be there for you and they want

Pisces (Feb. 20 to March 20) Things may seem a little stagnant right about now, Pisces, especially career-wise. Don’t forget your long-term goals! Focus on them and don’t let frustration over short-term drawbacks interfere.

Health & Wellness PREVENT DISCOMFORT This Gardening Season

To prevent discomfort and pain in the gardening season look after your back and joints before during and after gardening. Make certain you have the right tool for the job. Ensure you drink plenty of fluids and alternate between heavy and light jobs. Heavy loads should be shared. Your feet will carry you through everything so protect and support them with proper footwear and supportive insoles. Custom orthotics are best. Never go barefoot unless on soft grass or sand. Before you begin, warm up your muscles with some light stretching. Avoid muscle strain by learning the right techniques and change position often. Lift correctly. Kneel to plant and weed instead of bending. Taking high quality supplements such as calcium, magnesium and omega 3 – flax or fish oils will keep muscles, joints and bones strong. Take frequent breaks. Sit on firm chairs and avoid soft sofas. If discomfort or pain occurs, lie down and apply a cold compress, never heat. An Epsom salts bath can work wonders for sore aching muscles and joints. The magnesium in the salts helps

with inflammation and pain. Glucosamine and chondriotin supplements can also be helpful. Consult your chiropractor whenever possible to maintain a healthy structural balance. Chiropractic care can be helpful with: •Muscular aches and pains – acute or chronic •Headaches, light-headedness or lack of focus •Inability to concentrate •Mood or nerve disorders •Sleep disturbance – waking fatigued •Lack of energy and motivation •Sluggish circulation – cold extremities •Digestive or bowel dysfunction •Neck, shoulder, hip, knee and back pain By Muriel M. INSIGHTS

Life Within Our Community The news has been filled with horrible, heartwrenching stories. We have witnessed nature’s cruelty in the backyards, rivers and lakes we use as our playground in the summer. We have begun to question our own safety in something as simple as selling a vehicle on Kijiji or as difficult as running in a marathon. How people treat each other doesn’t make sense, what people think they can get away with doesn’t make sense, life simply doesn’t make sense. It seems the world has gone crazy. Amidst the chaos, the destruction, the challenges that are faced there will always be something that happens. Sometimes it is a lesson, or a small miracle lying in rubble after 17 days, or it is simply words from people you never knew that at that moment bring so much comfort in a time and a place that felt so dark you never thought possible that you would see light and beauty again. No matter the weather, no matter the circumstances, no matter the endless twists and turns that seem to face you, this is what we need to know and trust: There is always something there – we just have to be open enough to find it; when things don’t make sense, sometimes all we can do is to hug our kids a little tighter, turn the music up a little louder, lose ourselves in the dance and believe that in this cruel, unfair, sad world there is always a spark of

innocence unscathed, blessings too numerous to count. Finally, there is beauty in the rubble and it is a shame not to seek it out and appreciate it.

COMMUNITY CARES

By Mike Puffer

There is a great deal of emphasis these days on making smart choices in terms of life planning. At first glance, it may seem that such a topic involves only financial matters. However, putting all of the pieces of a “planning puzzle” together means much more than just looking after your money. Regardless of what stage a person is at in life, it’s wise to be aware of the services that are available in order to make living full of quality, health and enjoyment. Just as it is smart to have your financial house in order, it also makes good sense to be aware of the programs and organizations that are available to assist in other ways. This includes health agencies and social service organizations that collectively can assist when they are needed. One of the biggest challenges for many people is convincing a family member, friend or loved one that it’s alright to look into getting help. This is often due to a person’s pride or inability to admit that she is getting older and may be at a stage where a little assistance is needed. It also can be overwhelming to start navigating the health care “system”. However, the messages from local agencies do not always reach everyone who could use some assistance. If people who are looking for help would take the initiative to contact a local service provider, they would be amazed at how quickly assistance – or at least referrals to other agencies – can be made.

Don’t be afraid to ask for help when it is needed! You will be surprised by what is available to you. Mike Puffer is Director of Marketing & Development for Community Care City of Kawartha Lakes Health and Support Services. E-mail: mpuffer@community-care.on.ca

PLANTAR FASCIITIS A.K.A Heel Pain

The plantar fascia is a band of thick tissue that runs across the bottom of the foot and attaches at the heel. Plantar fasciitis (fa-she-eye-tis) occurs when the plantar fascia becomes inflamed, and it can be excruciating. The pain associated with plantar fasciitis may be located in the heel area of the foot, in the arch, or both. It is often worse in the morning and after long periods of walking or activity. Diagnosis As we mentioned in our last article, your chiropodist will pay particular attention to the “S.O.F.T.” factors in diagnosing plantar fasciitis, including Structural problems of your feet and lower limbs, Over-use injuries, Footwear, and Trauma. He or she will also perform a full biomechanical exam and gait analysis (looking at the mechanics of how you move for signs of problems).

Treatment

May 31, 2013 - The Promoter 21

Treatment varies with each person’s severity, lifestyle, overall health, and other individual factors. As the only regulated health practitioners in Ontario trained as foot specialists, your chiropodist/podiatrist is versed in an extensive range of treatments. He or she will tailor the most effective strategy for you, such as: • Custom orthotics • Taping and strapping • Footwear advice and/or custom footwear • Steroid injections and/or anti-

inflammatory medications • Foot mobilization therapy • Modalities such as ultrasound, laser, or thermal therapy • Home stretching programs • Night splints • In certain severe, chronic situations, your chiropodist may perform a surgical procedure under local anaesthetic to release the tension from the plantar fascia Treatment can span a matter of weeks to several months. Sufferers should be wary of remedies promising “fast fixes” by unregulated entrepreneurs or non-foot specialists. Increasingly, private insurance companies are insisting on treatment by a chiropodist/podiatrist. Without Treatment Foot pain can continue, and progress into a severe condition that affects one’s ability to walk and perform usual activities. Eventually, permanent damage to the plantar fascia or surrounding nerves may occur. Painful heel spurs can also develop, where bony calcification of the injured area happens over time as the body attempts to repair itself. Submitted by Kawartha Total Foot Care Centre

SAFE SUN

No one is completely safe from the sun. In Canada, sunlight is strong enough to cause skin cancer and premature aging of the skin. The risk of skin cancer today is greater than it was 20 years ago and continues to increase. UV rays can get through clouds, fog and haze. Water, sand, concrete and especially snow can reflect, and even increase, the sun’s rays. Your risk is higher if you: • Have light-coloured skin, eyes and hair • Work, play or exercise in the sun for long periods of time • Had several blistering sunburns as a child • Take drugs that make you more sensitive to UV light Use SunSense and talk to your doctor about any changes to your skin. Family Doctor Appreciation Week The Kawartha Lakes Health Care Initiative (KLHCI) is asking the community to help celebrate the fourth annual Family Doctor Appreciation Week, running June 3 to 7, 2013. This week will honour the many wonderful family doctors practicing in the City of Kawartha Lakes. Family doctors are essential to the health and vitality of our community and we

hope that all citizens will take the time to extend their gratitude for the day-to-day and lifelong commitments that these doctors have made. Local businesses are encouraged to show their support throughout the week by displaying words of thanks and encouragement to family doctors on their organization’s signage. Simple acknowledgement

of the week, such as “Family Doctor Appreciation Week, June 3 to 7” or other special words of thanks such as “Thank You to our Family Doctors” are some suggestions being offered by KLHCI. KLHCI will be sending letters of appreciation to all family doctors during this week. Hand- made cards and posters of thanks from local school-aged children will accompany the letters. KLHCI will also recognize two family doctors with gift certificates

for a weekend get-away for two to any Ontario Inns and Spas. KLHCI is a non-profit, charitable organization whose mandate is to recruit and retain family doctors for the City of Kawartha Lakes. Anyone wishing to be part of this community effort is invited to contact Cindy Snider, Recruitment and Retention Coordinator at 705.328.6098 or csnider@rmh.org or visit the KLHCI website at www.kawarthalakesdoctors.org.
