OFF THE TOP

New beginnings As thousands of local children return to school this week, there is a feeling of new beginnings in the air. Summer temperatures are cooling, the days are growing shorter and colour is beginning to appear on the leaves, all heralding change. And with that comes a sense of excitement. Readers and advertisers of the current edition of the Promoter may have noticed something different on our front cover as well. Our masthead has changed to ‘The Kawartha’ Promoter’. The new name reflects a renewed commitment to covering the entire City of Kawartha Lakes. This will not adversely affect our readers and advertisers in Bobcaygeon and Fenelon Falls, however. We will simply package the news magazine differently to include more city-wide news and features. It means The Kawartha Promoter can reach a wider and more diversified audience and that benefits both readers and advertisers alike.

We also have a new editor. Lisa Gervais joins us after having worked at the now closed Lindsay Post for threeand-a-half years. Gervais is a veteran, award-winning journalist and editor who has worked for weekly community newspapers as well as dailies. In addition, The Kawartha Promoter remains a free, advertisersupported, locally-owned and operated publication that will continue to write about the things that matter to you. Because we are a bi-monthly news magazine, we are in the unique position of being able to delve into the stories that are affecting you, presenting objective facts but analyses and opinion as well. We will also continue to let you know about all of the amazing things that are going on in and around the city. And, as always, we will continue to rely on you, our readers and advertisers, to keep us informed, share your opinions via letters to the editor and provide feedback on what we are doing right and what we are doing wrong. Ultimately, we answer to you.

Letter to editor

Apparently your city hall reporter, Gord Killen is not sure where he lives. To be called a “highway” a road has to be built and maintained by the provincial government. Most of the numbered roads in our area, in the City of Kawartha Lakes, are not highways. They are city roads, paid for by our local taxes. He should be referring to them as CKL roads or local roads. The only highways that run through our area are #7 (east/west) and #35 (north/south). Someone trying to follow the route of our new rural bus service from Gord’s description would find himself anywhere but here. He starts out on Hwy. 8 (in Kitchener) and returns on Hwy. 24 (in Guelph). Meanwhile, he spends some time on Hwy. 36 (which no longer exists, having been downloaded by the provincial government to local responsibility some years ago). Confusing isn’t it? No wonder firefighters and emergency personnel have such a hard time finding their clients. Dave Baker, Dunsford

LINDSAY - Managing 21 water treatment facilities and six wastewater plants, the City of Kawartha Lakes faces an onerous and costly task, an Aug. 22 special council meeting heard. Currently there are two operating authorities managing the systems: the city itself and contractor, the Ontario Clean Water Agency (OCWA). On May 1, 2012 council directed staff to review the hybrid model, with environmental and finance staff preparing a business case to identify potential efficiencies while providing the current service model. Presentations were made at the meeting by director of public works Michelle Hendry, supervisor regulatory compliance Rob Gamache and water and wastewater supervisor Lucy Burke. The contract is currently up for renewal and since the amount of money that will be necessary over the next number of years is $27,231,103.86 there was keen interest in what staff had to say. A Request for Statement of Qualification (RFSQ) for the operation and maintenance of the systems was released and advertised. There were five respondents but only two were considered to be qualified to the extent necessary to be considered: OCWA and Veolia Water Canada Inc. Under the current model, OCWA operates and maintains 17 water treatment plants, including water towers and standpipes and five wastewater plants, including pumping stations. The city operates and maintains the other four water treatment plants and one wastewater plant and infrastructure. However, city staff were recommending a change whereby the chosen contractor operates and maintains 14 water treatment plants and associated infrastructure, four wastewater treatment plants and pumping stations and one provisional wastewater station in Omemee. The city would be responsible for seven water treatment plants and infrastructure and one wastewater plant. Staff believe they could save $40,000-a-year by taking on three more facilities with no additional staff or vehicle costs. Council had many questions about the recommended $24-million-plus contract over five years. Ward 10 Coun. Pat Dunn asked if the current option was evaluated and it did not appear to have

been. Dunn felt that all options should be reviewed with at least two or three councillors on a committee. Ward 12 Coun. Gord James agreed, saying “there seems to be more questions than answers”. Many on council were apprehensive about approving a single-source contract with OCWA. Council eventually accepted the report and voted to form a committee to re-evaluate the process and report back to council in September. Photo: Pat Dunn

The WRAIN Project

Director of economic development, Lance Sherk was successful in lobbying council to hire more staff for its Water Research And Innovation Network (WRAIN) at the special council meeting. WRAIN was formed and registered last February and has only had one employee, manager of innovation Tonya Kraan, to date. However, Sherk said that over the next 18 months he would like to see up to four more employees phased in depending on how well the program is proceeding. Sherk said there was an expectation in their business plan that the average innovation centre would support 11 clients, a figure they derived from

the Canadian Association of Business Incubators. However, after only four months of operation, he said WRAIN is already working with 19 clients in the water sector to commercialize their innovative technologies. Recently, WRAIN has also been asked by the Centre for Alternative Wastewater Treatment (CAWT) at Fleming College to provide business development to their 50-plus clients as well as another 60-plus companies looking for support. Because of this overwhelming interest, Sherk asked council for approval to hire a temporary, full-time contract project manager with a background in water science for the next two years at a salary range of $60,000 to $75,000 per year and the request was approved. LINDSAY - Haunt Your Home the annual Halloween home decorating contest in the City of Kawartha Lakes – is taking a break this year. The autumn of 2013 would have marked the fifth annual HYH but Jason Ward of Wards PC Lawyers said they will skip this year and return in 2014. He said that Wards PC Lawyers is in the midst of a major expansion that will see several new lawyers join the firm this fall as well as renovations to the downtown Lindsay office. Ward said that HYH is costly and their accountants have advised them to take the year off due to their expansion plans. He said it takes a lot of work to organize HYH city-wide and a little reprieve this year is also just what the HYH team needs. Ward said they’re very appreciative of the awards and recognition HYH continues to receive, including for promoting tourism but they need a break. HYH has experienced phenomenal success since beginning back in 2009. The website has had hits from viewers in more than 140 countries.

WATEROPOLIS

Tried & Tested in Kawartha Lakes We are thrilled by the overwhelming response WRAIN has received in the water sector. There are many ways to improve water quality or improve operating efficiencies. WRAIN is looking at products that solve challenges in waste water and storm water management; products that improve energy efficiency and lower operating costs; and a whole new way of reusing water – grey water systems (I’ll tell you more about that in a future issue of The Promoter). There are approximately 1200 companies in Ontario developing water technologies and we

As a result of our efforts, we are in the process of evaluating 20 products (that’s well ahead of our goal of 11). The products are at various stages of testing. Many won’t be installed until the spring of 2014, but there is still much to do before then and as a result, we will be hiring a project manager in order to keep up with the demand. Boat rally raises $8,000

BOBCAYGEON - Thanks to a successful firstever boat rally, that raised $8,000, the Bobcaygeon Docking Committee hopes to expand on the 200feet of docking space it has already created along the Trent-Severn Waterway. The committee of the Bobcayeon Chamber of Commerce staged the event Aug. 24, heading out from the Pigeon Lake Yacht Club, with clues to adventure tasks, and finishing up at Happy Days House Boats. “This is the first major community fundraising initiative that we have embarked on, and on all accounts it was a huge success. Our committee is committed to working with the community, seeking public and private funding to grow one of our area’s largest attractions, our waterfront,” committee chair Carly Poole said. She said the goal was additional docking and accessible park space to the downtown core of Bobcaygeon. The committee is planning to stage the event again next year as well as other fundraisers, fundraising coordinator Penny Waghorne said. According to a press release, the committee is made up of local volunteers who are dedicated to economic growth through additional and rejuvenated water access. With the help of the Kawartha Lakes Community Future Development Corporation, Eastern Ontario Development Plan and local donors, they successfully completed an additional 200 feet of docking on the north Pigeon Lake side of Lock 32 in March 2013. FAIR A BALANCING ACT

LINDSAY -ss1,6,81,6,1bghgjbhfghfghjfyhffrr “You don’t change something that works,” Lindsay Exhibition manager Andy Letham says while seated in the boardroom at 354 Angeline St. S. in Lindsay, his massive dog at his side. However, you do always strive for balance between entertainment, fun and agriculture to keep it fresh, the man at the helm says. The Lindsay Exhibition this year runs Sept. 1822 at the fairgrounds. Letham admits that last year was a big year for the fair, as it featured the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) Musical Ride. He said people have asked him how they are going to follow that but “we are not even going to try. We are just going to put on a fair.” This is the 159th Lindsay fair so organizers know what they are doing and have come up with a balanced approach that should please everyone. It is a formula that has worked, Letham says. First and foremost, “it’s a huge agricultural fair” so there will be animals in the various barns and show rings as well as produce, arts and crafts and 4-H shows. A feature this year is the Canadian Cowgirls Rodeo Drill Team. They do musical performances with precision horse riding, stunning costumes and dangerous and daring manoeuvres. From ChathamKent, the team features 28 women and their horses, including the Quarter Horse, Appaloosa, Arabian, Paint and the dependable grade horse. They have performed

for the Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall. They are the “babes” in Friday’s (Sept. 20) bulls, bikes and babes feature. The bulls will see some of the rankest animal athletes on the planet versus professional bull riders from four different countries in an eight-second battle for supremacy. The bikes feature daredevil acrobatics of freestyle motorcross FMX riders jumping 60 feet up and 70 feet across while performing some of the deadliest tricks ever seen. The ever-popular celebrity racing pigs are back and the Sir Sandford Fleming College Loggersport Team will be competing. Lindsay frontmen Tyler Kyte and Nick Rose will also bring their popular cover band, Dwayne Gretzky to the LEX. Saturday and Sunday are all about the kids once again with a packed agenda of children’s activities. All the old favourites are also back: the ambassador of the parade competition, parade, demolition derby, truck pull, tractor pull and the midway. And, as usual, Trinity Taxi is spearheading a drive to get sponsorship for families to receive admission, a taxi ride to and from the fair, a food voucher and midway rides. Anyone interested in sponsoring a family can contact the fair office at 705-324-5551 or Trinity Taxi at 705-878-0001. Visitors will also notice the new digital sign along Angeline St. S. thanks to Stewart Morrison Insurance and Eastern Ontario Development Program (EODP) funding. Back to School

Bobcaygeon PS senior kindergarten student Riley Reale and teacher assistant Michelle Davidson-Baker returned to school this week along with thousands of other area students, staff and teachers.

Like thousands of area students, Riley Reale returned to school this week. The senior kindergarten student at Bobcaygeon PS thought it was a good thing. Playing in the classroom sandbox with a buddy, he said it was good “because I get to see my friends again.” “Me, too, Riley, because I missed you,” his playmate said. Teacher Lindsey Wesselink said she was also pleased to be back into the routine. Riley was one of about 8,540 students in the City of Kawartha Lakes and 16,575 in all areas of the Trillium Lakelands District School Board (TLDSB) who went back to school this week. It was also back to school time for some new principals with Tischa Hetherington taking over at Queen Victoria PS in Lindsay and Lisa Waldinsperger at the Alternate Education and Training Centres. There have also been $8 million worth of school renovations, including classroom renovations at Alexandra PS; retaining wall replacement at Bobcaygeon PS; replace phone system, upgrading to landscaping and new lockers at Central Senior School; new windows, frames and screens at King Albert PS; a new accessible washroom at Lady Mackenzie PS; office renovations at Mariposa ES; a lifeskills classroom and kitchen renovations at Parkview PS ; new floors, window blinds and a new roof at Queen Victoria PS; ceiling tile replacement and new roof at Woodville ES; ceiling tile replacement and video surveillance at LCVI; roof replacement and brick repairs at IE Weldon SS; courtyard renovations, tech renovations, video surveillance and window replacement at Fenelon Falls SS. In other news, Jillian Hawley has been sworn in as the 2013-2014 student trustee. Meanwhile, overall suspension numbers decreased in the board by 88 in 2012-2013 from the previous year. In addition, back on Aug. 27, the TLDSB appended the terms of the Ministry of Education’s Memoranda of Understandings (MOUs) to the existing local agreements. “By appending the provincially-negotiated MOUs to local agreement TLDSB staff, students, and parents can be assured that the school year gets off to the right start,” board chair Karen Round said.

100-mile dinner on Monday

Food for flood

COBOCONK - A second mayor’s breakfast - for Ontario Disaster Relief Assistance Program (ODRAP) funding - will be held Sept. 12 at the Royal Canadian Legion in Coboconk on County Road 48. It follows on the heels of a successful first event, Aug. 15 at the Lindsay Golf and Country Club, that attracted more than 120 people and raised $3,500. The fundraising effort follows flooding in April on the Burnt, Black and Gull River systems that caused significant damage. The city has applied for provincial funding through the ODRAP but must do local fundraising. Money raised locally will be matched two to one by the province up to a maximum of 90% per eligible claimant. The committee has set a fundraising goal of $135,000. City of Kawartha Lakes disaster relief committee project manager Bob Smith said the next event kicks off at 7:30 a.m. for networking followed by an 8 a.m. breakfast. Tickets are $20 each or four for $65 and can be purchased at the Coboconk or Kirkfield service centres or by calling 705-324-9411 ext.1232 or email ecdev@city.kawarthalakes.on.ca Mayor Ric McGee encouraged the public to continue to support the cause. “It’s important for everyone to talk to their friends, neighbours and businesses and encourage them to help,” he said. “The floodwaters receded months ago but there are still people whose lives are significantly impacted by this disaster.” Meanwhile, the Cedarplank Rd. Cottager’s Association recently donated $200 to the cause. Donations can be made at municipal service centres or online through PayPal at www.city.kawarthalakes. on.ca or the Lindsay branch of the Royal Bank. LINDSAY - Chefs Andy Brooks and Andrew Munro are only setting the menu right about now for Monday’s (Sept. 9) 100-mile dinner in Lindsay. Brooks, who works at the Olympia, said he knows they (Munro works at Pane Vino) will be smoking pork, beef and chicken but, depending on what they get from about 12 local farmers, are just now filling in the blanks for the rest of the menu along with the remainder of the team that delivers this vastly-popular annual event. It is a bit stressful but also something Brooks loves doing thanks to the adrenaline rush of feeding 230 people quickly. Olympia Restaurant owner Nicki Dedes is thrilled to facilitate the night that features local food served by celebrity servers with entertainment thrown in for good measure. Dedes said it is a lot of work for a five-hour period but the immediate and overwhelming response makes it well worth the effort. This is the fifth annual event with locallysourced foods acquired through Kawartha Choice FarmFresh producers, who in addition to meat, provide vegetables, pickled items, maple syrup, cheese, milk products and fruits in season. This year, attendees will also be able to sample a collection of Kawartha-baked butter tarts from participating bakeries on the Kawartha Northumberland Butter Tart Tour. The 100 Mile Dinner is a signature fundraising event in support of Kawartha Choice FarmFresh and the United Way for the City of Kawartha Lakes. THAT WAS SUMMER- NOW WHAT?

By David Sparkes

It’s the end of the summer and the crazy world we live in continues to be just that, crazy. Canadian businessman Lawrence Stroll paid $27.5 million for a used car. O.K., I guess I should mention that it was a 1967 Ferrari, but nevertheless that is an absurd sum of money to pay. Imagine what you could do with that sort of money and how you could improve the lives of thousands. I hope he doesn’t get rear-ended. Justin Trudeau, in a well orchestrated moment of spontaneous commentary, tells the world he smoked pot. Not to be outdone, the irrepressible mayor of Toronto says he smoked “lots of cannabis” to the surprise of absolutely no-one. True to form, our straitlaced prime minister says he didn’t smoke pot but he once ate a whole lot of candy. And by the way, he is not going to let Parliament get underway until you all stop pestering him about the Senate scandals – he’s in charge after all. Various rock stars and celebrities are flaunting their bodies, acting like spoiled brats and generally misbehaving but there is nothing new about that except perhaps the degree of sophistication in managing the publicity continues to get better and better. The important thing, it seems, is to have your name in the limelight and they will do whatever it takes to achieve it. There’s no such thing as bad publicity? Tell that to Mike Duffy and Pamela Wallin or even Rob Ford. Oh and by the way, we are finally coming to grips with the civil war in Syria, perhaps. We just have to wait until Mr. Obama tells us what to do. As usual the United Nations has shown us all just how they make a difference in the world – or not. Then there’s Egypt where the definition of a coup has had to be re-written to avoid getting involved, or so it would appear. The economy is shaky. Haven’t I heard that song before? Never mind, we have been promised that Mr. Harper will slay the budget deficit ahead of the 2015 election.

Unless of course something unexpected occurs and we will not define the word “unexpected” until that happens. We can expect things to continue in much the same way which means out of control. Sorry, I meant to say out of our control. Just do as you’re told and everything will be fine.

CruisEfest brings back memories

BOBCAYGEON - When it comes to Cruisefest – Sept. 15 at the Bobcaygeon fairgrounds – it’s all about the memories, organizer Joe Pollard says. The owner of a 1966 Buick Wildcat convertible, Pollard said the annual event is also about honouring the many hours antique and classic car and truck owners spend on their vehicles, whether to supe them up or to reinstate them to original condition. “Overall, it’s the workmanship these people put

Home Farm Auto Commercial Recreational

into their vehicles and bringing back old memories of what we used to drive,” Pollard said. He added that it is a family event and organizers like to see children attend in hopes they will want to own an antique or classic car of their own one day. A vehicle must be dated between 1945 and 1980 to be classified as a classic car in the event. If it’s a beautiful day, Pollard expects up to 250 vehicles from as far as North Bay and Ottawa at the fairgrounds between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. for the 17th year of the Bobcaygeon and Area Chamber of Commerce’s signature event. Participants will pay a $5 entry fee for a goody bag and prize eligibility and 21 trophies will be handed out. Public entry is by donation and food is available. There will be a 50-50 draw. The fire department will do a jaws of life demonstration. Organizers also sell tickets on bigger prizes. As always, proceeds go to charity, including sponsoring the automotive award at Fenelon Falls High School, the Bobcaygeon Food Bank and the toy drive..

Yoga is for everybody and every body. My name is Ally Boothroyd and I’m a new resident in the wonderful town of Bobcaygeon. More than 10 years ago I fell in love with my very first yoga class. I began to cherish the relaxed feeling it gave me and the more I practiced the more I felt a much needed sense of balance in my life. Over time, I noticed the wonderful benefits yoga was giving to my entire body. Recently, I graduated my 200-hour Kripalu teaching certification and my intention is now to introduce and share this practice with as many people as possible. Every single person can benefit from yoga on some level; yoga is as unique as you are. Kripalu Yoga is a conscious practice of physical yoga postures, breathing exercises, and relaxation techniques for integrating body, mind, and spirit. Yoga has become well known for its wide range of health benefits from improved strength,

balance & flexibility to reduced tension, anxiety, and stress. One of my students, Kristy Hainer, describes it best when she says: “I initially thought yoga was just about breathing and stretching - I had better things to do with my time. I went to support Ally in her new studio and have been totally converted. Yoga for me is a way to calm my mind, focussing on the now and what’s happening on my mat with my body. It’s also been helpful to release tightness acquired through my regular interval training regimen. After yoga, I feel reenergized, at peace with myself, and so grateful for the opportunity to practice with Ally.” For more information about my studio, class times and the benefits of yoga email me at ally.boothroyd.yoga@gmail.com or call 705 731 7037.

non-profits wanted for college project

Life Matters…. There are clean dishes and then there are CLEAN dishes. My mother washed dishes in a dishpan on the kitchen table with water so hot, she was the only one who could put her bare hands in it. When my youngest brother was about two years old, he liked to walk around the edge of the table, hand over hand. And then it happened: he upset the dishpan and the boiling water scalded his arm. His skin was covered with blisters and eventually a large scar formed. When he began school, he refused to wear short-sleeved shirts because he didn't want anyone to see his scars. Then as an adult, he slowly started to wear short-sleeved shirts. The scar was still there, but he was no longer self conscious about it. He could talk about it freely. Most of us walk through life with scars – either physical or emotional – from our past. Perhaps from an abusive partner or a negligent parent. When the person who failed you dies, those scars blister up again and you have a choice to make. Some people harbor the pain and live hostage to the hurt for the rest of their lives. Others face the pain, let go of their hatred and move on. Which one will you choose?

KAWARTHA LAKES – The C-Links Centre for Community-Based Projects and Social Mapping and the Faculty of the Leadership in the Environment course at Fleming College’s Frost Campus are seeking non-profit organizations to participate in a unique, community-based research project. As part of the Leadership in the Environment course, all first semester students explore the links between community and the environment. Working in teams, students choose a non-profit organization in the city and an issue or project that agency is involved with. Students prepare a presentation and submit a mock grant application to their instructors, advocating for their organization and issue. Organizations interested in working with the students would provide issue(s) or project ideas for the students to research. The college will set up information sessions at the Frost Campus for those who are interested. The end result will see student teams give presentations in class and submit their ‘grant’ applications for marking. Participating organizations will be provided with the results of all research conducted for their organization. As well, the best student presentation will be awarded a $750 grant that will go to their chosen organization to help fund the issue or project that the students researched. Non-profit organizations interested in participating are asked to submit proposals by Friday, Sept. 20, 2013 to Shantal Ingram, C-Links Project Co-ordinator, shantal.ingram@flemingcollege.ca.

Scott applauds tasers

LINDSAY - MPP for Haliburton-Kawartha LakesBrock, Laurie Scott has applauded a Liberal government decision that all front-line police officers will be permitted to carry tasers. “It’s unfortunate that it has taken the government so long to adopt a policy that Tim Hudak and the PC Party have been advocating for four years,” Scott said. “Equipping front-line police officers with Tasers will not only improve public safety, but also the safety of police officers, by providing them with a non-lethal option when dealing with volatile and unpredictable situations.” In speaking to the Police Association of Ontario (PAO) in November 2009, PC Leader Tim Hudak said: “A (PC) government will support expanding the use of Tasers by police officers in our province. These are vital tools that can defuse extremely high risk situations using non-lethal force that might otherwise require the use of firearms.” Police chiefs and associations have been calling for the expanded use of Tasers for years but despite the need, the Liberal government has restricted their availability to a select few supervising and specialized officers. As a result, police officers in Ontario have been denied access to non-lethal

options that have been available to their counterparts in Quebec, British Columbia, Alberta, Nova Scotia and New Brunswick, as well as the RCMP. “Tragically, we have seen what can happen when police officers are limited in how they can respond to a potentially violent situation,” added Scott. “Between 2005 and 2009, seven inquest juries in Ontario recommended that all front line officers be able to use Tasers because they were most likely to encounter violent situations”. Scott concluded that she was pleased that law enforcement officers will now be given the proper tools that they need to do their jobs effectively.

Did you know that legally....

What happens when you decide to text while driving AND the driver of the car coming towards you decides to text at the same time? Well, let’s hope you don’t find out as you may not live to tell your story! Is it really worth the risk? Did you realize that this distracted driving behaviour actually equals drunken driver behaviour with the probability of the same serious outcomes? The Insurance Bureau of Canada advises that distracted drivers are just as impaired as someone with a blood alcohol content of 0.08. The OPP cites distracted driving (including texting) as the main factor contributing to 3050% of crashes and pedestrian fatalities. If you are a passenger in a car and the driver starts to text, please tell him/her to put the phone down. If you are a driver & have that urge to text—know that it could be your last one. And if you are a parent of a new driver please persist with the seriousness of the issue. If you have been charged with a distracted driving offence, and have concerns, or are in need of legal representation contact a licensed paralegal. Donna M. HOCKEY SEASON RESUMES

The Bobcaygeon Bucks, Little Britain Merchants and Lindsay Muskies are all gearing up for their 2013-2014 regular seasons. The Bucks, who compete in the Greater Metro Junior A Hockey League (GMJHL) are hoping to build on last year’s success when they made it to the second round of the playoffs before coming up against the eventual Russell Cup victors, the mighty Bradford Rattlers. The GMJHL is also expanding by six teams this year to take it to 20. The new teams are the Toronto Predators, Seguin Jr. A Hockey Club, Alliston Coyotes, Halton Cyclones, Knights of Meatford and the Toronto Blue Ice Jets. The Bucks open their season on Saturday (Sept. 7) against the Toronto Blue Ice Jets at 7:30 p.m. at the Thornhill Community Centre. They are then next in action Sept. 18 travelling to Orangeville to take on the Americans. The Bucks’ home-opener is scheduled for Friday, Sept. 28 at the Fenelon Falls Recreation Centre at 7:30 p.m. Owner Dan Fisher said new coaches, Nathan and Andrew Oke will take over this year. The team is slowly taking shape and is looking for billets by calling Fisher at 705-341-7149. Meanwhile, the Little Britain Merchants are back in action in Junior C Hockey. They played the annual red and white game on Wednesday (Sept. 4). The Merchants are participating in a pre-season tournament in Alliston Sept. 6-8. Game times are 9:45 p.m. Friday (Sept. 6); 1:30 and 8:45 p.m. Saturday (Sept. 7). They are hoping to turn around following a disappointing 2012-2013 campaign. Next game is Sat., Sept. 14 home to the Lakefield Chiefs. The Lindsay Muskies resume their OJHL season as well. They play on Friday (Sept. 6), hosting Georgetown in a 7:30 p.m. tilt at the Lindsay Recreation Complex. On Sept. 8 they travel to Toronto ; Sept. 13 they play another home game versus Burlington and on Sept. 15 are on the road to play St. Michaels.

QUILT SHOW THIS WEEKEND

BOBCAYGEON – The Settler’s Village Quilters will be holding their biennial quilt show this coming Saturday and Sunday (Sept. 7 and 8) at Kawartha Settlers’ Village (KSV). Organizers said all of the buildings in the village will be displaying quilted objects. “Come celebrate the art of quilting in the unique atmosphere of Settlers’ Village with a display of more than 200 heritage and new quilts,” the group said in an e-mail. The group said it is fortunate to meet at KSV in a real log cabin in the complex that features a collection of restored houses, churches, a barn, carriage house, general store and schoolhouse. It all started about 12 years ago when the quilters outgrew the Henderson House, the main meeting house, at the village and the Wray family log cabin, circa 1850, became available. They made fundraising quilts and held teas and fashion shows and received private and Ontario Trillium Foundation funding to make it happen. The Wray House now has a parlour, kitchen, dining room and two bedrooms to display old quilts and the back kitchen is the work and meeting room. The guild meets every Monday to quilt for about three hours. The guild makes a quilt every other year to help support the operating costs of the house and holds workshops to help pay for heating costs. They are also involved with the Victoria Cancer Quilt program and a group of them make little quilts called Duggie Snuggler’s (named after an old teddy bear found in a cabin) for needy families at Christmas or for the family crisis centre. They also support the local food bank. They helped create a quilt registry through the Arts and Heritage Society to preserve the history of quilts in the Kawartha region so that anyone in the area can bring in a quilt to be documented with a little history of its creation and a photo is taken. They draw from their registry to help fill the village with quilts at the biennial shows. For more information about the Settlers’ Village Quilters, call Kawartha Settlers’ Village at 705-738-6163. - Submitted by Cindy Frankland

Man fined for hunting wild turkey

TRENT HILLS - An Ajax man has been fined a total of $1,500 for hunting wild turkey. Richard Rosborough pleaded guilty and was fined $1,000 for trespassing for the purpose of hunting and $500 for transporting unlawfully taken wildlife. The court heard that on April 30, 2013, a Municipality of Trent Hills resident heard gunshots on private property and confronted a hunter leaving the property with a dead wild turkey. The resident reported the incident to the Ministry of Natural Resources’ TIPS reporting line. A conservation officer following up on the tip determined that the hunter had trespassed and shot the bird after seeing turkeys in the field.

Justice of the Peace Jack Le Blanc heard the case in the Ontario Court of Justice, Campbellford, on August 22, 2013. The Ministry of Natural Resources reminds the public that trespassing for the purpose of hunting or fishing is against the law. For further information on hunting regulations, please consult the 2013 Hunting Regulations Summary available at ontario. ca/hunting. To report a natural resources violation, call 1-877-TIPS-MNR (847-7667) toll-free any time or contact your local ministry office during regular business hours. You can also call Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).

Health & Wellness How Low Carb Diets Cause Weight Loss

There are 3 main components of the foods that make up our diet. They include proteins, fats and carbohydrates. Carbohydrates are mainly made up of glucose molecules, either alone or joined together in chains. Bread is a good example of a food that is made up of mainly carbohydrates. When carbohydrates are eaten, they are broken down into glucose and this glucose goes into the blood stream. Blood glucose levels are tightly controlled in a narrow range by the hormone insulin. Insulin is also a hormone that causes storage of other foods in the diet, so any excess dietary intake is stored as fat. Chronically high insulin levels will result in excessive fat storage and these high insulin levels are caused by excessive carbohydrate intake. When carbohydrates in the diet are restricted, insulin levels drop and the fat stored is released and used as energy. If this carbohydrate restriction is maintained with control of fat and protein intake, you will lose weight. Very low carbohydrate diets result in more rapid weight loss, however, to be safe and to avoid nutritional deficiencies they must be done properly. Check with a medical professional to see if a low carb diet is right for you!

It seems a bit unfair to talk about the end of summer already, but the turning of the calendar to September and students returning to school always seem to manage to make us look ahead to autumn and winter. Though the seasonal conclusion of summer isn’t for a couple more weeks, for many of us Labour Day signals “the end.” If we are going to look ahead to the coming fall and winter, it’s important to note that many people - especially seniors - can start to feel lonely or isolated at home. Family members from out of town do not visit as often as they might in the summer, or inclement weather presents challenges for people to get out and about. Regardless, the importance of socialization among seniors is as high as ever in the fall and winter. The good news is that there are so many opportunities for socialization, participation and mental and physical stimulation, there really is no reason for anyone to feel alone. Since the majority of people want to remain living at home for as long as they can as they grow older, it’s important that they are informed about what services, programs and agencies are available to assist them. Community Care City of Kawartha Lakes has a wide variety of programs designed to help people of all ages stay in their homes, knowing that help is available when needed. These services include healthy eating programs such as Meals on Wheels, support services such as transportation, health promotion and wellness and caregiver

Back to School for Little Toes

letting your children go barefoot in public areas like pool decks and change rooms by using towels and flip flops to shield them from the floor. Never share footwear. Your chiropodist is the expert for these or any concerns with your children’s feet and the impacts they can have on the development of the bones, muscles, and joints of their lower limbs. Properly attending to issues early can prevent painful longstanding problems later in life. From the team at Kawartha Total Foot Care Centre

It’s that time again when little toes return to school, and once more little minds are filled with lessons for another year. It makes for a timely opportunity to offer some helpful lessons and tips to parents about their children’s good foot health. GROWING PAINS When your child complains of discomfort in his or her feet, ankles, or knees, it could just be normal growing pains, right? Actually, the whole idea of growing pains is a myth. Pain in the lower limbs is not normal, and may indicate a number of issues from something as simple as footwear to structural or developmental foot problems. THE “AWKWARD” STAGE It’s true that kids don’t always grow proportionally. They shoot up in ways that we often associate with that gangly phase. However, no matter what your child’s age, pigeon toeing (a condition which causes the toes to point inward when walking), constant tripping or falling, walking tip-toed, or a hunched forward posture when walking should not be dismissed as awkwardness. They can be symptoms of an underlying structural or developmental issue that is most effectively addressed sooner rather than later. FLAT FEET & KNOCK KNEES Many parents express concerns about the flatness of their children’s feet. The truth is that flat feet are normal in children until about age three, at which point the muscles cause an arch to form. By age four, flat feet should disappear, and should be addressed if they do not. It’s similar for knock knees (where the knees angle in and touch one another when the legs are straightened). They’re a normal part of development in young children, and usually disappear by age seven or eight. However, parents should be mindful if the knock knees don’t begin to self-correct by age six.

WARTS & FUNGUS Wet or sweaty footwear and socks are pretty much a staple of every child’s life it seems. Unfortunately, plantar warts and fungal infections like Athlete’s foot thrive in dampness, which is one reason why children are especially susceptible. An investment in a good boot dryer (and using it diligently) for shoes, skates, and all footwear can prove invaluable. Avoid September 6, 2013 - The Promoter 33

SESSIONS ON BETTER HEALTH CARE DELIVERY

The public is invited to two upcoming public information sessions to hear about a process to better deliver health care in the city and Haliburton County. Since early 2013, Community Care and the Ross Memorial Hospital have been participating in some Local Health Integrated Network (LHIN)directed integration network planning, aimed at better health care delivery by six health providers: Community Care City of Kawartha Lakes, RMH and the VON branch for Kawartha Lakes, as well as Community Care Haliburton, Haliburton Highlands Health Services (the Haliburton hospital) and SIRCH of Haliburton - involved in the integration planning. According to a press release, the integration planning team has been charged with the responsibility of recommending a new model of delivering acute care and community-based health services that will be more efficient and effective. The IPT has considered several different potential models and will shortly be recommending one draft

model, which has to be approved by the boards of the six organizations. Just prior to that step, there will be some upcoming public information sessions for local residents to hear about the integration process, and the draft models being proposed. Two sessions have been scheduled: Wednesday, Sept. 11 at Village Housing (65 Melbourne St. W.) in Lindsay, 3 to 4 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 12 at the Coboconk Municipal Centre (9 Grandy Rd.), 3 to 4 p.m. Community Care City of Kawartha Lakes CEO Cathy Danbrook will make the presentations and will be happy to discuss the integration steps and draft models with anyone interested in learning more. For more information, people can contact Community Care CEO Cathy Danbrook at 705324-7323, or visit the Central East LHIN website to learn more about the integration process (www. centraleastlhin.on.ca). The CE LHIN website has a special integration planning section, along with a Q & A section on the process.

Trail surface upgrades

The City of Kawartha Lakes is performing trail surface upgrades on four specific segments of the Victoria Rail Trail Corridor. The trail improvements will consist of base corrections and the addition of screening material that will be graded and compacted. Work began in Bethany and will continue north for 500 meters. Similar enhancements will then follow along the VRTC north of Kenrei Rd., north of Burnt River and south of Kinmount.

York street closed

York Street and various metered parking spots behind the CIBC and Sportsline in Lindsay will be closed for construction and installation of underground hydro lines until Sept. 30. Access to and from the Legon and River Wine Works will be from the Peel/ William St. road . Access to the parking lot behind Sportsline will now be accessible from the Lindsay Street parking lot entrance.

IN MEMORY

Rayner John (Ian) In memory of my dear husband who passed away September 17, 2010. I remember the day I met you The day God made you mine I remember the day I lost you And will ‘till the end of time With all the tears and heartaches The one thing that makes me glad Is that you chose me to share with you The wonderful years we had I often sit and think or you And cry a silent tear You live with me in memory Each day throughout the year How can I ever forget you When everything I do Is something that reminds me of the wonderful years I spent with you Someday we will be together again I do not know when We will hold our hands together And never part again. Love always, your wife Eileen & Family

Horoscopes

September 6 to 20, 2013 Melodie McCullough

Aries (March 21 to April 20) Loneliness can be overwhelming, and believe it or not, most people find themselves in that situation at some point in their lives. Dear Aries – at times like these don’t forget to simply connect with yourself! Enjoy your own company and love who you are. Taurus (April 21 to May 21) As a lover of the finer things in life, Taurus, you often surround yourself with luxuries and you love good food and wine. This can lead to a tendency for over-indulgence. Be careful. Pace yourself. Gemini (May 22 to June 22) Gemini – you have the wonderful ability to charm your way into people’s hearts. Sociable, entertaining, and friend-maker – that’s you! However, it may take you longer to find true love and you may need to date a variety of people before choosing your life partner. Don’t worry . There is nothing wrong with being sure! Cancer (June 23 to July 23) Cancer – you’re such a romantic! On the surface you may appear as “down-to-earth”, but you know right well that underneath you love your fantasies and the supernatural. Don’t hide this! Let it shine out! You are much more likely to meet like-minded people. Leo (July 24 to Aug. 23) Keep following your healthy lifestyle, Leo. You are definitely on the right track to a hale and hearty mind and body: fresh, organic and local veggies and fruit; lots of physical activity; work you enjoy; and relaxation when you need it! Virgo (Aug. 24 to Sept. 23) Stress – the every day, commonplace reality of the modern world! Should we just get used to it and stop complaining? No, no, and no! It does not have to rule your life, Virgo, or anyone else’s. Stress is something that happens inside you – it’s the result of how you react to an experience. Instead of reacting, try acting. That means evaluating the stressful situation, doing some physical activity to relieve the response, and practicing relaxation. Get going! Libra (Sept. 24 to Oct. 23) Autumn – the warm summer sun is waning and with it comes a time of contemplation and sometimes a longing for things not done. Don’t fall into the trap, Libra. Think of it, not as an ending, but as a launch of newness and creative stirrings. Scorpio (Oct. 24 to Nov. 22) Are you feeling a trifle run-down at the moment, Scorpio? You may be carrying other people’s problems on your shoulders. Most times the best way to help a friend is to stay calm while they explode; chill out and lead them to a safe and sheltered space. Sagittarius (Nov. 23 to Dec. 21) Okay, dear Sag. We’re not going to whitewash away the fact that things ahead may get tough for awhile. We cannot emphasize enough the need for you to count on your friends and family to help you through. Ask for help and you will be helped! Capricorn (Dec. 22 to Jan. 20) It’s September! That time of year with new beginnings and endless opportunities waiting around the corner. We sense your excitement, Capricorn. Stretch out and jump in! The season is yours to discover. Aquarius (Jan. 21 to Feb. 19) Commitment is a big word, Aquarius, with lots of responsibility, but we know you’re up to the challenge. Find something in your life that is really worth the effort to make a total commitment, and then – commit! Pisces (Feb. 20 to March 20) “If you hear a voice within you say ‘you cannot paint’, then by all means paint and that voice will be silenced.”: Vincent Van Gogh. Do you think, Pisces, that Van Gogh perhaps knew what he was talking about? Of course! These words of wisdom don’t apply to art only, but to every endeavor you may think you cannot do – get out there and give them a try!
