Siisu - Siisu is a very big boy who obviously loves his food! He came to the shelter, with his little brother Rio, after his owner passed away. He is very affectionate and loves rubbing up against you but prefers to not be picked up. Siisu could stand to lose a couple of pounds - did I mention he loves his food??!! Siisu is a 14 year old male orange tabby.

Miss Fancy Pants - Miss Fancy Pants is a playful cat who is full of energy. She can be a little bit squiggly when being held but only because she has things to do and no time to waste! Fancy has been with the Humane Society for a while now and is ever so ready to go to a forever home. She has a wonderful personality and would be a great addition to your home. Miss fancy Pants is a 2.5 year old, female tabby and white beauty.

Tom - Tom is a lovely cat who is quiet and independent. Tom was once an outdoor cat so he may need a family who will be careful when opening the door. He's a big boy who is hoping to get some room to roam soon! Come to Pet Valu and meet this handsome fellow. Tom is a 2.5 year old male tabby.

Marley - Marley was abandoned at the shelter with a scar on her nose and was very timid. She has come along way since then! Marley likes to rub up against you and is very curious. The scar on her nose is completely healed and she is absolutely stunning! Marley is 1.5 years old with long grey hair.

Mynk - Mynx came to the shelter, along with her five siblings, as fairly young kittens. She's a playful kitten but is a bit depressed since she got separated from her family. Four of her brothers and sisters have been adopted, and her brother, Jinx is in a separate cage because they are now too old to be kept together. She is a very sweet girl who needs some cuddles. She still has a lot of kitten energy and loves running around when she is in the playroom. Mynx is an 8 month old black female with a bit of white on her chest.

Boots - Mr. Boots is one gorgeous fellow. When he arrived at the shelter, he was in pretty rough shape. He has recovered from his injuries and would love a new forever home. Boots may want to get out the door as he was once an outdoor cat. He is very affectionate! He is a long-haired tabby with a beautiful white mane and he is just over 1.5 years old.

Paper Cuts April Flowers

We had just finished a game of Junior Monopoly when I asked Callum if he knew what the term, “being a good sport” means. He said, “Yes. It’s when you support someone.” I suspect he related the thought to the hockey game he and his team had played that morning. His understanding is that being a good sport – rather, being supportive – is not about money. It seldom is to a 6 year old. Within every moment of every day, we’re presented with opportunities to be good sports. Show support to family, a friend, teammates, or someone you haven’t met. April is Daffodil Month. I hope you understand how important it is that we blast out this information every chance we can. This is a special day when Canadians can show their support for those living with cancer and to remember those who have died. On this important day we encourage

Canadians to do something special for those living with cancer or to contribute in some way to the fight against this disease. For example: Tell a loved one or friend with cancer that you are thinking of them; let them know about the Society’s information and support programs. Do something special for someone you know with cancer (make a meal, do an errand, babysit). Talk with your provincial or local politicians about the importance of fighting back against cancer and tell them how they can join the Society in this fight. To some the daffodil is just a flower. To us it’s a symbol of hope. It says we won’t give up. It says we will fight back against cancer and win. Show your support of those battling cancer today and remember those we have lost to cancer. This is not to say incredible organizations such as the Canadian Cancer Society and others like it don’t require ongoing, substantial financial support. They do. They’re just letting us know there is much, much more we can do for each other on special days. Because every day is special, isn’t it? Be a good sport. Support someone. The federal government has announced that it will no longer fund the Experimental Lakes Area (ELA) water research station in northern Ontario. Last week Mr. Devolin voted to defeat a motion that would have kept it alive. The ELA is one of the most important research

It is a unique living laboratory where scientists, including researchers from Trent University, conduct cutting edge research on a range of water quality issues. The work done at the ELA cannot be done anywhere else in the world. And it costs a pittance to maintain – only $2 million per year! What does this have to do with our riding? I don’t have to spell out to you the importance of our lakes and rivers to the local economy, in particular to farming and tourism. And just last week our Kawartha Conservation Authority released its Kawartha Watershed Report Card. It gave the Kawartha Watershed only a C for surface water quality. This is very worrisome, indeed. I grew up on Balsam Lake and have enjoyed the beautiful waters of our area for nearly 60 years and have always hoped that future generations would also enjoy and benefit from them. In recent years I have seen a lot of scary changes that are not easily explained. Dead carp, algae blooms, and extensive weed growth, for example. We all depend on science to protect our valuable water resources. Killing the ELA is a stupid and dangerous action by our government. And it seems that Mr. Devolin is more concerned about party loyalty than he is about protecting our lakes and rivers.

The primary focus of the March 26th Council meeting was to review the 2012 fourth quarter results of all departments in the City of Kawartha Lakes. The reports are related to the various activities of the year and to my mind it is an exercise in bafflegab. Just to cite one example: the Economic Development Department stated that the pilot season of the town trolley as being successful when everyone knows the overriding costs of getting this project launched far outweigh any benefits for the foreseeable future. I for one cannot wait until the expected Performance Management System is in place, requiring a systematic method of proper analysis of potential objectives. If this system had been in place, the cost overruns may very well have been avoided. I have no idea what system the City has in mind but since I was once a Management Consultant I would like to give you an example of one that I am familiar with: 1. Identify the overall objective. 2. Quantity - answers the question “How much is to be achieved?”, usually expressed as a number or a percentage. 3. Quality: refers to the quality of the work

performed in accomplishing the Objective. Quality answers the question “How well?” or to what extent/level is the work to be accomplished. It is expressed in qualitative terms where quantification is difficult or impossible. 4. Time: answers the question “By when?” or “within what time frame?” and is usually expressed in calendar time. 5. Cost: answers the question “what resources will be consumed?” It usually includes direct expenses only, expressed in person days for people resources and dollars for out of pocket expenses. Obviously had a Performance Management System been in place, the objective of purchasing the trolley would have failed in three key areas; Cost – way over the initial budget, Time – missed the initial target date; Quality – had staff performed an in-depth analysis of what it would take to make the Trolley road worthy, they would have found the necessary modifications far too costly and would have advised Council of their findings. The major problem with any initiative is that we sometimes look too quickly at the end result and, in our haste, we tend not to do the due diligence necessary in proper planning. Isn’t hindsight a wonderful thing? Will having a proper Performance Management System in place solve everything? Hardly, but it is a start.

Septic Rehabilitation Program

It has been two years in the making but, in a recorded vote of 11 in favour and 3 against, Council approved a program that will be initiated in 2014 that will encourage and facilitate the repair, replacement or upgrade of septic systems primarily located on rural residential lands, and/ or properties adjacent to water, watercourses and/or agricultural lands in the City of Kawartha Lakes as well as all other residents on septic systems in the City of Kawartha Lakes. It was stressed that it would be on a voluntary basis, one wonders why since studies have shown that malfunctioning septic tanks have been a major cause of pollutants entering our lake and rivers. The City of Kawartha Lakes decided to establish a fund for this purpose. It is envisaged that the City would provide the funds necessary to complete the work and that cost recovery would be done through an amount being added to the yearly tax assessment. Councillors Junkin, Campbell and Macklem voted against the City’s initiative. The most vocal of the three was Junkin citing his belief that it was the Health Department’s responsibility, however the Mayor responded that the City was nevertheless ultimately responsible. I find it rather strange that three councillors would object to a proposal such as this when it is clearly something that is voluntary.

In a somewhat similar vein, Michelle Hendry, Director Public Works, requested Council approval for the recruitment and hiring of a Risk Management Official to assist the City in managing Source Protection Plans and developing Risk Management Plans that will reduce or eliminate contaminant risks to the City of Kawartha Lakes municipal drinking water systems, as required under the Clean Water Act, 2006. Since the city has little choice in the matter the motion easily passed.

Because of this winter’s deep snow, I did not get pruning my apple trees as early as usual this year. The best time is late winter before the sap starts to run and new growth begins. There are two main reasons to prune any fruit tree. For young trees, it helps to create a strong, healthy structure. Older ones need to be pruned to keep their balanced shape and to encourage fruit production which happens on older wood called spurs. The required tools are a pair of good quality clippers, loppers and a pruning saw. If you are pruning far above your head, you may need a sturdy step ladder or a long pole pruner. Make sure that all tools are clean and sharp. Apples like light and good air circulation. Both of these help them to ripen and colour properly. The experts try to make an open-centred tree. Some old timers used to say that you need to be able to throw your hat through the centre without hitting any branches. So do not be bashful. Remove weak, broken or diseased branches, crossed limbs, long spindly ones, small lateral branches, and ones that are growing straight up or down. When removing a branch, be sure to leave a short collar next to the trunk or limb. Cut on a downward angle to allow rain to drain and the wound to heal. All of these procedures will reduce disease and prevent the formation of hundreds of small puny fruit. The best apples develop when they have about 20 cms. of growing room. Yearly pruning will reward you with a healthy tree filled with blossoms in the spring and a bountiful harvest in the fall.

As spring comes to Kawartha Settlers’ Village, we are getting back to business. Marion Bell has returned as Office Co-ordinator. The Eastern Ontario Development Program will provide partial funds for a Marketing Intern contract position to improve our communications and promotion using electronic media. On March 28, Bobcaygeon Public School students participated in maple syrup making and enjoyed a pancake lunch with syrup from the Martin family.

On April 9, students will come to Fairbairn Church to see a play based on the War of 1812 presented by the Down ‘n Out Theatre. We are co-hosts with Boyd Heritage Museum for the first local showing of “The Land Between” documentary at the Bobcaygeon Municipal Service Centre on Friday April 19 at 7 pm. Some scenes were shot at Settlers’ Village and local citizens took part in the commentary. Come to our Earth Day Celebrations on Sunday April 21 from 1 to 4 pm. Gamiing Nature Centre invites you to reconnect with nature this spring, by sharing the enjoyment and importance of living in harmony with nature, through educational experiences and finding balance between human needs and nature’s needs in everyday life. The 2013 spring program includes an organized children’s program and workshops for adults occurring every weekend from now until June. The Saturday Nature Club for children (6-12) includes fun and educational activities, from frog watch to learning to read animal tracks. 1. Walking daily is the single best thing you can do if you have varicose veins. Walking activates the calf muscle pump that pushes blood out of the legs towards the heart. Community Cares

Each year, almost 900 exceptional people with extraordinary hearts give some of their time, talent and support to Community Care City of Kawartha Lakes, in order for the agency to deliver the services and programs that it does for local residents. This corps of volunteers contributes to Community Care in almost every way imaginable - by participating in delivery of programs and services such as Meals on Wheels, volunteer transportation and Adult Day care, by serving on volunteer boards and committees, by helping out in the agency’s administrative offices or by playing vital roles in fundraising and special events put on by the organization. Collectively, those 900 caring people contributed close to 80,000 volunteer hours to the agency last fiscal year. That’s the equivalent of approximately 45 full-time paid positions. Do not let anyone ever undervalue the contributions made by volunteers! Community Care’s annual Volunteer Appreciation event is coming up quickly. It will be held Sunday, April 21 at the new Fenelon Falls Community Centre. The agency’s volunteers have received invitations in the mail, and their RSVPs are now being sought. The theme of this year’s event is “Exceptional People, Extraordinary Hearts” and it exemplifies not only what kind of individuals the agency’s volunteers are, but also perfectly sums up what Community Care’s staff and board members think of those individuals who give so unselfishly. The least that the agency can do is say “thank you” in a small way with an annual tribute. With such a large volunteer contingent, there is always significant turnover. For our part, we think that’s just nuts since plantar warts most commonly take on a cauliflower appearance. Adding to the confusion, people will sometimes come to us mistaking their plantar wart for a corn or vice versa. Yet, just as any five year old who has ever turned his or her nose up at the dinner table will tell you, there’s a big difference between corn and cauliflower. And, so it is with corns and plantar warts as well – although distinguishing between them often requires the highly trained eye of a chiropodist to make the right diagnosis. In the end, it doesn’t matter so much what you call it we suppose. A plantar wart by any other name

A Wart by Any Other Name

Plantar warts are caused by the human papilloma virus (HPV) and affect 7-10% of the Canadian population. Yet, this common, contagious, and sometimes painful invader of the foot suffers from an identity crisis, beginning first with its name. The “plantar” in plantar wart refers to the fact that it appears on the plantar aspect of the foot – your sole. Yet, it’s not uncommon to hear it referred to mistakenly as a “planter’s wart.” One can’t be sure how this came to be. Certainly, there’s no empirical evidence to suggest that farmers or avid gardeners are any more prone to contracting warts on their feet than the rest of us! Actually, most at risk for plantar warts are people who in their bare feet frequent public places like locker and change rooms, showers, the deck areas in community

Melda and Glenn Clark are sad to announce that Eugene Ross Roache, age 91, West Head, Nova Scotia’s oldest resident and Melda’s beloved father, answered the Good Shepherd’s call “Come Home, Come Home, it’s Suppertime” shortly after midnight on Monday, April 1, 2013. He was born in West Head on May 18, 1921, and on February 2, 1948, he married Sarah May Nickerson. Soon they were blessed with two sons, Claude Myers and Edsel James. In the mid 1950s Eugene and Sarah added two more children to their family, Melda Jean and Francis Eugene. Eugene and Sarah were blessed with many grandchildren. Eugene, however, was no ordinary grandfather. He let grandkids tag along with him doing things ordinary grandfathers thought were too dangerous or too dirty. Adventure and Gramp seemed to go hand-inhand. Eugene spent his life as an inshore fisherman. He loved his life on the water. On the land he dabbled in gardening and raising sheep, pigs, hens, rabbits and goats. He got great pleasure riding his 4-wheeler across the bog to pick cranberries with his dogs trailing behind. He became an avid reader late in life and remembered every detail. Another hobby emerged in his eighties as he took up painting. His masterpiece was a map of West Head showing the names of every family, house, barn, toilet and fence from his childhood and others that he had only heard about. He had always been a poet, but ventured into writing books about the people and places of long ago. In recent months and in failing health he insisted that he had lived a long and satisfying life and everybody had to die sometime. He had a deep relationship with Jesus Christ and was as ready as anyone could be to step from this life into the next. He was faithful until the end and was greeted with, “Well done, thou good and faithful servant.” Eugene’s family will have a time of sharing at Huskilson’s Funeral Home, Lockeport from 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. Friday. Funeral service will be at the Lockeport Pentecostal Church on Saturday, April 6, 2013 at 1 p.m. Interment Lockeport Cemetery. As expressions of sympathy, memorial donations to Gideons International would be appreciated. Messages of condolence, memories, stories and photos may be sent to meldaclark@hotmail.com. Eugene is now in a wonderful place with blue skies, gentle breezes and smooth seas. The fisherman has gone home.

Filling:

8 tablespoons Nutella 1 pint strawberries, hulled and sliced

Whipped Cream:

1 cup whipping cream, very cold 1/2-teaspoon pure vanilla 2 tablespoons sugar 16 mint leaves, finely chopped 1. Make the whipped cream. Using an electric mixer, beat the whipping cream in a chilled bowl until thickened and soft peaks form. Sprinkle in the sugar and then beat until just combined. Do not over-beat or it will turn buttery. Gently fold in chopped mint and keep refrigerated until ready to use. 2. Prepare French toast. Divide Nutella among four slices of bread. Top with sliced strawberries and another slice of bread. 3. Combine beaten eggs with almond milk and spices. Set aside. 4. Melt butter in a large frying pan over medium heat.
