Niki's Column - What World Are We Living In - November 2020

Page 1

WHAT WORLD ARE WE LIVING IN? Are we living in the real world? A virtual world? Or an augmented reality? Who would know? Everything is just so fake now, you just don’t know what you’re getting anymore, or even who or where you’re getting it from. Who you can believe, who you can rely on and what the actual truth is, has become a complete mystery, so it’s no wonder a great many people have mental health issues – confusion and insecurity can do that. What’s really sad is that we are no longer taught to be strong and resilient but are being trained to be sensitive, vulnerable and easily offended. Whatever happened to “Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me”? Best philosophy ever. Well aren’t we now a lot of cowering, oversensitive individuals, supposedly being “protected” by the very people who are making us weak and angry. Let’s take social media – it’s like play school. The powers that be have taken away the number of ‘likes’ you get in case it’s upsetting for you to see someone gets more ‘likes’ than you. Are you serious!? Not even our virtual life is real anymore!

The products you buy online are fake – the models are Western, but the products come from China and the instructions are in Chinese. I don’t even know what I’ve bought anymore when it arrives and have no idea where to put it! We are all encouraged to be fake – botox, fillers, hair dye and false eyelashes are the order of the day; all which suggest we are not good enough

A visit to the doctor these days is either a hurried or expensive event where you leave with a goody bag of referrals and prescriptions rather than a cure, and your dining experience now seems to have a start and finish time and your desserts are accompanied by the sound of the vacuum cleaner if you’re being too slow. If you lose an election, it becomes a fake election (and it might well be)

We can’t tell jokes anymore because if it’s funny it’s probably going to offend someone and people will be too scared or embarrassed to laugh.

So at the end of the day we are all pawns in a game, being shifted from pillar to post by those with money and power who would like more of both. So this is the world we live in now and my advice to you would be to keep your moral compass intact, don’t believe everything you’re told, be alert, follow your gut feeling, express yourself freely but kindly, do what you aspire to, be cautious of the advice that you are offered and be aware that a lot of things out there are… fake! That way you have a much better chance of surviving this life which is meant to be the “new normal”, even though there is very little normal about it. by

as we are, and it appears that working on our personality is a concept that’s become completely foreign to us. Cryptocurrency is another one – whoever knows what that’s about? It’s certainly not about real money so that’s fake too… but hey! Come for the ride!

and investigative journalism has died a death because a lot of investigative journalists have died a death, so, as a profession, its kind of lost its attraction.

We can’t tell jokes anymore because if it’s funny it’s probably going to offend someone and people will be too scared or embarrassed to laugh – so, now our “best medicine” is also out the window.
