VIRTUAL FRANCHISING AWARDS 2023 NOMINATE A BUSINESS ENTRIES CLOSE OCTOBER 28th 2022 The Quality Franchise Association are delighted to announce that entries are now open for the Virtual Franchising Awards of 2023. Back for its third year, the past two events have attracted hundreds of nominations, year on year challenging our panel of judges with many fantastic franchises and businesses each and every one worthy of an award. However, only eight finalists will be chosen for each of the eight categories of excellence, and at the awards premiere, three finalists will be announced the winners of their category. Nominate a Business THE CATEGORIES

I have chosen the Franchisor of the Year category as in my opinion it is one of the most important and high profile of the categories. From a personal point of view I have been involved in helping franchisors at all stages of their life cycle, so it made perfect sense to be part of this award especially.

4. How does Azura Franchise Technologies support the franchising sector?

For our customers it is putting in place and adapting, as their business changes, systems that help them to manage their business better and more efficiently, whether that means recruiting franchisees, payment processes, booking systems, auditing systems, managing franchisees, ensuring franchisees follow processes and much more. More generally we attend many events both online and in person to provide guidance on any aspect of running a franchise given our experience but especially anything around franchise technologies and cyber security.

The Virtual Franchising Awards are back! Join us at 1pm on January 31st, 2023

We’re delighted to have Azura sponsoring the Virtual Franchising Awards again for 2023 Azura providefully integrated, cloud based CRM management software system specifically tailored for the franchising industry enabling franchisors and franchisees to manage their business more effectively, giving them more time to focus on the development of their products and services and as such, increase revenues Azura’s Mark Scott tells us a bit about the brand, himself and why Azura have chosen to sponsor the Virtual Franchising Awards for 2023.

2. Who are Azura Franchise Technologies?

1. Please tell me a bit about yourself. What is your role with Azura?

I am essentially a career banker. I worked for NatWest for 39 years, the last 23 within the franchise team, including heading it up. I took voluntary redundancy at the beginning of 2021 but given my experience and fondness of the franchise industry I wanted to remain involved but also have more control in the role I took on. Simon Pullum, the founder of Azura and I had known each other for over 15 years and he wanted someone to come in and help him run the business, so I did just that in June 2021 and began as Operations Director. Shortly after I started, in November, the business was acquired by the AIM listed Franchise Brands plc. In May 2022 I became Managing Director and Simon became Chairman of the business. Essentially between Simon and I we now run the business but I look after the day to day running with Simon providing the guiding hand.

In short Azura is a software company, established in 1990 and specialising in developing Franchise Management Systems for franchisors across the whole industry from activity businesses, service businesses and fast food to domiciliary care

3. Please tell me about why have you chosen to sponsor the Franchisor of the Year award for the Virtual Franchising Awards 2023?

I am married to Sue, we have 6 fantastic daughters, 3 cats (Skye, Daphne & Dave), a tortoise (Albert) and a leopard gecko (Venus) Outside of work we love to travel, see friends and spend time with our family My hobbies are golf, badminton and ballroom dancing Mark Scott is Managing Director at Azura, who are sponsoring the Franchisor of the Year category at the Virtual Franchising Awards 2023 Interested in finding out more about how Azura can help your franchise network? 6 What brands have you worked with in the past and how have you helped them to thrive? We have worked with over 100 franchise brands from new franchisors setting up a system from the outset to the very established Some of the brands we work for are Metro Rod, Driving Miss Daisy, Countrywide Signs, Monkey Music and Ovenu

5 What does Azura hope to achieve within the franchising sectorin the next 5 years? Like any business we want to grow our business standing still is not an option for anyone As part of an AIM listed business that aspiration is very much supported We are already the longest established franchise management system in the UK and we wish to continue as the number one business for franchisors to approach for their franchise management system requirements We have some International operations and with any growing business that is also something that I expect will take place over that time period

Within Franchise Brands we have over 500 years of franchise experience within the senior management of the 8 businesses alone and so we try to make a meaningful contribution to the growth of franchising We are always keen to help any franchise at any stage of their development with practical advice as somewhere within the wider business there is someone that can help and not just with regard to the technology side of things

7 What is your biggest tip for businesses looking to be Asuccessful?franchise is a system and a way of operating a business, so you need a technology solution to help you operate that to its optimum capacity

The main help we provide to any business is to simplify processes, reporting on how all aspects of the business is doing, not only through our system but by gathering information from others, such as POS, accounting, etc , save time, save resource and in turn save money but also improve the sales processes and thus reduce the time to a sale and improve profitability

In this issue, i’ll be discussing the Fundamentals of Franchising. Read on to learn more about • Your vision & Mission • Planning for the future • Your pilot operation • Working out territories • You as a leader • Time management • Protecting your brand If you have any questions about the topics covered in this issue, please do not hesitate to get in touch.

Step One

• A franchisoris the owner of the brand

• Territoriesare the areas given to franchisees as part of their contract with you In very simple terms, as a franchisor you are helping someone else to create a business like yours Your franchisees will most likely have the rights to a particular territory This territory, restriction is usually for marketing purposes but can be more restrictive for some franchise models When creating your pilot it’s important to test it on an area similar to the territory size you will allow franchisees to use You must ensure that you can prove that the business works, and that it is profitable This to begin with will be your “Prove It” You will need to create a team of people who will work with you and your franchisees to develop the brand Think about it, do you know everything about running a business? Do you for example know:

• The pilotoperation is the business(s) used to create, test and refine the processes in the business

• exactly what the health and safety laws are?

• the employmentlaw inside out?

• The list goes on It’s really important that you don’t try to be the font of all knowledge That’s where mistakes happen, and they can be really costly Surround yourself with people who are experts in their field The pitfalls The trick to this is to be prepared You will need to ensure you have enough money to get this off the ground and be able to market it effectively To be a successful franchisor you need to become a recruitment and training company

franchisors make in the early days, is to give huge territories that can’t possibly be run from one outlet, without a clear plan to develop the area

That’s all for now folks next month we will explore the financial aspects of becoming a Franchisor Get in TouchInterested in finding out more about how Runo can help your franchise?

Franchising a business can seem like a really easy solution to business expansion, and it is easy if you follow the correct processes Business format franchising, which is what most franchises in the UK are, is all about processes Get those processes right and you will have a successful franchise Ingrouptruth

Apart from being underfunded, one of the biggest mistakes

• the legalities around forming a business

• A master franchisee will have the rights to develop the brand in a particular area or country

Recruiting and training franchisees who will be great advocates of you and your business

It’s important that you have a clear vision for the business and that your franchisees understand that vision You, just like your franchisees should have a clear plan for the future

it’s simple to do but it’s not always that easy There are a number of things you need to understand if you want to make a success of your franchise group Getting each one of the steps right is the hard part Let’s take those steps one at a time over the next few months: Understand the terminology:

• Everything about marketing, including how to use social media for business?

This can have a detrimental effect on your business You are limiting the number of outlets you need, to create a truly national franchised offering, and thus limiting your growth and income potential

• A franchiseehas the rights to use the brand to replicate the pilot operation in a given area

THE FUNDAMENTALS OF FRANCHISING

As Tappy Toes partners with P&O ferries to deliver dance classes to under-5 passengers, franchisor Claire Munday talks about how Tappy Toes came to be and the story behind the popular children’s dance franchise.

I asked her ‘Doyou thinkanyone wouldwanta dance classforatwoyearold? ’ She 100% believed in me and the Tappy Toes brand, to the extent where she lent me the £250 needed to get the name trademarked! That’s where this journey began

It was created by a local printer in Watford where I lived at the time. I bought 10 yellow t shirts from H&M aged 2-3 years, took them to the local printer and asked him to print Tappy Toes on them I had no idea about logos, or branding, or websites or anything business related at all really! But I just knew I wanted to get little people Hedancing!created the logo and said ‘How about this ’ I said ‘Greatthanks!’ and that was that. 10 x yellow t shirts, with Tappy Toes written across them in Ourred. first logo was created for free, in about 10 minutes, by a very helpful printer! Tappy Toes At Sea Never did I imagine that years later, I’d have 21 franchises (and counting) across the UK and be sending teachers onboard P&O cruises delivering our fabulous classes! During the Covid lockdowns, I started revamping our syllabus and tweaking things to make it even better. I really am proud of the lesson plans that we have, that are completely unique to Tappy Toes We’ve had bespoke Warm up and Goodbye songs written for us, which I absolutely love I have really had to pinch myself and am so proud that babies and toddlers near and far are enjoying the Tappy Toes syllabus delivered through the extended 45 minute Havingsessions.danced all my life, it is obviously something I am extremely passionate about, so being able to share in so many children’s first experience of dance, is such a privilege. I really feel that a Tappy Toes class could spark a lifelong love of dance in children, and what a healthy hobby to maintain I have big plans for the Tappy Toes brand, so do watch this space! 16-year staff investment partnership proves fruitful for Clive Owen LLP

Having been encouraged by the skills developed thus far, the firm sensed an opportunity to increase its commitment to personal development They engaged LMI-UK to undertake a series of Effective Personal Leadership (EPL) programmes that would help employees develop the skills needed to achieve personal goals, whilst creating a winning environment for their colleagues. For this specific programme, Neale agreed to support Clive Owen’s marketing director, Bridget Charlton, and audit manager, Amy Luckett, both of whom would benefit greatly from LMI’s tried and tested approach, which has delivered successful outcomes worldwide for more than 60 years

Having built a strong reputation as a team of experienced chartered accountants and business advisers, Clive Owen has grown into a firm of over 100 experts with multi disciplinary skills, since its establishment in 1983. As such, the future growth and success of the business relies on its ability to adapt, ensuring employees receive the personal development and training opportunities needed to help them become more effective within their roles

In understanding the importance of the task ahead, Clive Owen engaged LMI UK’s Director for Scotland & North East England, Neale Carter, who has worked with the firm over a 16year period to deliver a range of important personal development programmes.

The LeadershipClient Management International (UK) recently delivered a series of Effective Personal Leadership programmes for employees at Clive Owen LLP, the latest in a long-standing commitment by the firm to personal development programmes across the business.

The GivenClientthe increasingly challenging recruitment situation for UK businesses, Clive Owen, one of the largest independent regional firms of business advisors and accountants, believes companies need to come up with different ways to retain and attract staff Given that individual leadership coaching was already a key part of the firm’s growth strategy, Clive Owen had already provided a range of training and personal development opportunities to accountants and advisers through their relationship with Neale.

The Future LMI UK Director Neale Carter has delivered a range of important personal development programmes over a 16 year partnership with Clive Owen, and has ongoing plans with the company for continued investment in the development of their people. In the short term, personal development has allowed the firm to attract and retain experienced individuals during a period of significant growth Long term, this will lead to improved personal performance and results, as employees enhance their skills needed to thrive within their roles Formany years I havesupported Clive Owen LLP across thepartnershiphelping themimprove their performancethroughpersonaldevelopmentcoaching Mostofthecurrentemployeeshaveexperienced workingwithme atsomestageintheircareer andtherelationshipsformedare bothgenuineandlong lasting.Thisis

In addition to this, employee satisfaction has improved since the training was delivered, as it has given individuals the confidence and ability to take on more responsibility.

The LMI approach of spaced repetition and multi sensory learning made it much easier for the individuals to retain important information and develop the skills needed to become effective leaders of themselves and others. Structured over twelve separate lessons over several months, the programme is designed to fit neatly around participants’ schedules without requiring large amounts of study time away from work or family.

training that Neale had delivered previously, the Effective Personal Leadership (EPL) programme is designed specifically for those in management roles that also have a responsibility to lead and motivate other members of their team. The programme teaches participants how to become effective personal leaders, providing an opportunity for self discovery, identification of strengths and their authentic leadership style

The FromBenefitsCliveOwen’s perspective, soft skills such as emotional intelligence, self awareness and the ability to motivate and inspire colleagues are as important to the success of the firm as professional qualifications By engaging LMI and supporting colleagues with tailored programmes, like the EPL, the firm has continued to grow and develop and has recently opened a new office in Middlesbrough on the back of this success

An established and well known brand with a great Inreputationthepet care industry, brand history and reputation is everything. For customers to trust you with their beloved feline friends and their home, it helps to be operating under a recognisable trade name with a history of excellent care. There’s only one way to quickly accomplish this normally lengthy task by buying a pet care franchise from a high profile franchisor like The Cat Butler. The reputation we’ve established has allowed us to grow at an exceptional rate and our franchisees benefit from this recognition to secure new clients. Know how Apart from the physical things like marketing materials, branding, website etc., your franchise package also comes with the one thing money can’t buy, knowledge and experience. I have been running my own general pet care service since 2010 and founded the Cat Butler in 2015.

If you have been considering starting your own pet sitting business or whether to invest in a franchise, we truly believe that investing in a proven concept, like The Cat Butler franchise is the best option if you are looking to get working straight away and reap the rewards of business ownership. Why can't I just do this myself? This is the question we often get asked when speaking to people who are considering starting their own pet business. Here are some key benefits of investing in a Cat Butler franchise rather than going it alone: A business in a box When you buy a Cat Butler franchise, you are essentially buying a business in a box. Absolutely everything you need to run that business is in the Talkbox. to any independent cat sitter, and they’ll tell you that they would have given their eye teeth for the contents of our franchise box in the early days of building their business. It takes years and years to build up the collateral, reputation, and experience that you get with a Cat Butler franchise package.

I currently have twelve Cat Butlers in my team, caring for thousands of cats each year. I have spent years learning how to run the business effectively, learning from my mistakes, and I teach my franchisees how to replicate my success. As a franchisee, you can tap into those years of experience, knowledge and general know how. By Sandra James, Founder of The Cat Butler

A franchise also has the added benefit of many franchisees contributing to the system allowing it to hire the right people and test new ideas. It’s very hard for an independent start up to compete against that. You only have to look at the reviews on Trustist to know how well the franchisees are doing. Cat owners love The Cat Butler, and I am ready and willing to teach my franchisees everything I know so their business will be just as successful as mine. a Prospectus

what does this mean in the ‘real’ world, the impact on your daily life? And, how does this affect your ability to secure a franchise in this climate? Should you even do so? Let’s discuss this in this short report!

Article By Richard Pakey Lime Licensing Group

Contact Richard If you believe everything that you read, the way things are going, the UK will probably ‘talk’ it’s way into a recession, although the facts are that in the UK, a recession is defined as a negative economic growth for two consecutive quarters, this apparently is still a way off at present, but some financial experts are warning that it could be a possibility down the line, when though, who However, knows!

A Franchise Can Be A Viable Option If We Enter A Recession

Franchises Recession Proof?

Next, think about whether you have the correct capital and ongoing cashflow to cover the true costs of the franchise?

Should You Buy a Franchise if a Recession is Looming?

Maybe you have chosen to consider franchising because you have indeed had the threat of redundancy and then impending unemployment, this may well have happened to you before and often people just want to take back control, it is often this very reason that some people look into starting their own business, and franchising can be part of that equation because there is a helping hand to not just get started, but also for continued ongoing support. This is just one of the fundamentals in franchising, being in business for yourself, but not by yourself! It is a fair point though, that some careful thought needs to go into choosing the right franchise in uncertain times, or is it? Are all franchises the Aresame? All

First, you will need to think about the business sector you will be looking to represent as a franchisee, do you believe that the franchise can survive any downturn? What does the franchisor have to say about this? Are you completely confident that your research is correct? Have you sought an expert option? If you are unsure, it will probably be best to do this first.

There are even ones specific to franchising as the Government does want to achieve more people out of employment into self employment. You might gasp at the very thought of taking on a loan, and you definitely should not do so if it will not be affordable, however, could this be an option to get the franchise purchased and then have sufficient cashflow so that the family budget is not affected, in which case, this could be an extremely viable option for you! Please do not dismiss this, it is again just another option you can explore.

Only ever move forwards if you are truly confident that this will work for the current economic situation and your personal circumstances, you will be making a long term commitment, and there is lots and lots of living proof, that when done correctly, franchising can be a great solution for any economy! I hope to see you join the world of franchising very soon!

Having the upfront capital might well be just the start! Can you keep the business well funded should business growth be slower than anticipated? If not, maybe the recession is not your real challenge here, funding the business to start with is your bigger challenge! There are options for you though Is A Loan The Answer? Always consider what would be in the best interests of the franchise, and you personally, maybe, given the economic outlook, it could well be better to retain any cash you personally have right now, and with interest rates still unbelievably historically low, take advantage of this with a low interest rate loan.

How Much Risk Is There With A Franchise? Like any business there are zero guarantees, but you will have the benefit of seeing some history of how the franchise has been performing, probably in different areas to where you might be looking. Take your time, ask plenty of questions, there is often assistance out there from consultants that act as a third party to ensure you fully understand what you are getting into. Look at funding options as a solution, but never be coerced into this.

How Have Franchises Survived During Uncertain Times? There is some great news for you, the facts on franchised businesses look very good in comparison to non franchised ones, for example, more than 90% of franchises businesses report that they are profitable, now go and compare this to other business formats, you will be encouraged to see that a franchise does perform, in general, much better than the whole of market. The franchise sector is still growing, it always has done, and in fact, per capita, is still a tiny fraction in comparison to other developed counties like America and Australia for example. These countries have around five times more franchises than the UK, for some people in those countries, they start looking at business options as a franchise than anything else! You might also be surprised to read that there are currently only around a total of 1000 active franchises systems in the UK, again this is very low compared to other countries! Do you want to be one of the one thousand? Keep reading…

What is Business Location Planning and why it matters?

What is Business Location Planning and why it Ifmatters?

you’re a business thinking about opening new branches or relocating your premises, how do you go about planning the right locations for your customers and staff? At Tech4T we specialise in helping businesses and other organisations find the perfect places, so we’re going to explain here why Business Location Planning is important and what it covers Let’s start by first stating the obvious – many businesses and organisations relocate their premises or open new branches or offices not based on intelligence and hard data, but instead on guesswork and assumptions Quite often, the business leaders assume a particular area will be right for them because of reasons such as it appears busy, or because other similar businesses are nearby, or just because they know the area well. But as has been proved time and time again, none of these factors guarantee that a new shop or restaurant or even a school will succeed, or that a new headquarters will be able to easily attract the staff it needs Business Location Planning removes this risk through the use of data analysis and territory mapping software to make intelligence based decisions on which locations will perform the best and deliver the results required.

Even factors such as car parking, the profiles of potential customers, and whether there are businesses or other elements that pull people into a particular area can be included, so business owners can precisely select which locations to focus on and which to avoid The systems can also show which areas are underserved and present an opportunity and whether there will be any overlap with the business’s own branches (leading to sales cannibalisation) or their competitors

Advanced location intelligence systems like Tech4T’s Territory Runner system use interactive maps to make it easy for businesses or organisations to see at a high or granular level – information most relevant to them. This can include population and demographics data, local and regional transport links, and even the location of competitors in the area

And it’s a fact that organisations and businesses that take an intelligence led approach to planning their locations do far better than those that don’t. They are able to benchmark their performance against the true sales potential in an area, ensure they are locating their branches in the optimum location to maximise sales, and understand the factors that matter the most to them so these can be replicated across their other sites. And for business headquarters, schools, and other public sector organisations, decision makers know whether they will be able to attract the staff they need, that these employees can easily travel to and from the premises, and what their catchment area actually is Business Location Planning has enabled businesses and organisations from fast food chains to local and national authorities make the right location planning decisions.

About Tech4T If you’re a franchisor or considering expanding by franchising your brand you’ll have unique needs when it comes to mapping territories and creating a successful franchise network Tech4T can help you maximise the value of your brand with dynamic solutions for targeted business WhogrowthWe Are We are a diverse team of technical and commercial professionals Down to earth and practical, we’re based in the UK serving global clients. Staff retention is a huge consideration and concern for all businesses but especially those in the Care sector. Many discussions have been had on how to retain staff, and indeed there are many ways to help increase retention such as; providing training, giving appreciation, allocating a mentor; and making employees feel valued and trusted. Whilst virtually all businesses have an “open door policy”, this does not mean all members of staff want to walk through the door, or seen to be walking through the door Furthermore, if informal conversations are had there is no formal audit trail. Browse Franchises Ali Shahaab wasn’t intending to be the owner of a Cake Box business initially However, having been an existing customer since 2014, in his local area, he knew it was successful and decided to research This prompted the purchase of shares but also initiated a greater interest in the franchise framework, giving way to consulting an accountant to verify the Henumbers.wasstill working as a fulltime independent IT consultant, with a PHD no less, but had left the London rat-race commute and relocated to Cardiff, reducing many hours spent travelling, however he still continued to work extended hours. Early 2021, Ali had decided if things were to dramatically improve for his family, he had to make key changes By April he had applied for a Cake Box franchise and set the wheels in motion for the first store to open in Wales. Fast forward to March 2021, the store continues to be hugely popular. The original opening was so successful they had 40 minute queues lining the streets waiting to buy cake! Not only that, customers travelled some distances to visit the store and buy their cakes The transition from an office based role to the owner of a retail store has been huge adjustment and Ali is the first to admit that the journey hasn’t always been easy. The challenges he’s faced have been anything from staffing to keeping up with customer orders and even the lack of a driver, but it’s all made worthwhile because his work/life balance is vastly different. So much so that he welcomed his third child this year and he was only planning on two!
