ICS Got Talent, held this year on November 5th and 6th, is an open opportunity for talented individuals and groups to showcase their skills. Despite ICS Got Talent having to split into two shows: one for Middle and High School performers and the other for Elementary performers, show stopping act after act proved to the crowd how important it is to appreciate our community’s talents.

10

THE QUILL

This year in particular was full of exciting moments. Led by highschool hosts Oak and Darren, audiences were taken on a space adventure where the hosts, who played characters from the popular game Among Us, crash landed on Earth and went looking for the most talented among us to fix their spaceship.

By far, the most popular acts were the pianists’. Beautiful performances on the piano showcased many students’ hard-earned ability to play and emphasised the musical skills that are present in our community. Either K4 or blindfolded, the grasp the music had on the audiences’ heart was moving. Aside from the piano acts, there were a plethora of shows. Some of these included acts involving drumming, singing, and dancing.

The judges, Ms. Brooke, Mr. Vinny, and Mr. Stephen C., had very careful deliberations in their feedback, throwing in jokes on the side for everyone’s benefit. But as the show came to a close, we had a final reveal of the winners. Taking home 2nd and 3rd place were a dance and piano act respectively, and the winner of this year’s Elementary segment of ICS Got Talent was a resounding vote towards the trapeze show performed by Eiffel and Noelle. Cheers filled the room in support of all the winners -- and all the performers over all -- but in the end, the real prize is the unity and praise we are able to feel with each other as a loving community.

ICS got talent, held this year on November 5th and 6th, is a prestigious school tradition where students are able to present their unique talents. This year’s ICS Got Talent was a huge hit, with the student council doing a great job organizing such an event and dozens auditioning. Although split into the Secondary show and Elementary show, this event was a great way to appreciate and recognize such talents and specialty students bring to the ICS community. We held acts from singing all the way to dancing and viewing such performances was very inspiring and empowering.

This event also consisted of our teachers judging holding and crazy characters that brought a light-hearted fevel to the event. Having to see the excited souls and the trembling bodies students held was eye-catching.

This year our grand winners for the ICS Got Talent 2021 HS/MS were a group of Juniors who performed a selection of Black Pink songs. Their hard work, catchy songs, and groovy dance moves were exquisite, spurring the support of many. Having audience members cheering for them, waving their glow sticks, and voting made this a memorable and familial experience. We would like to congratulate each and every performer who brought confidence and life to the ICS stage and thank the student council for working on this event day and night.

Fair is foul and foul is fair! So began ICS’s first undertaking of Shakespeare by highschool students since 2014. And what better play to take on than the ‘cursed’ Scottish Play itself, Macbeth? A story of betrayal, blood, murder and madness, Macbeth is one Shakespeare’s most well-known plays, and the three sold-out show nights demonstrated that ICS students were just as hooked on it as Shakespeare’s earliest audiences must have been.

26

THE QUILL

A dual cast of students performed on the nights of November 18th, 19th, and 20th, masterfully delivering their lines and energetically portraying witches, lords and ladies alike. Many characters were played by multiple actors, with each cast having four Macbeths, two Lady Macbeths, two Macduffs, and two Malcolms. The different characters could be identified by their signature makeup look, all done in a surreal style and composed of different geometric shapes, patterns, and exaggerated features. nov-Dec 2020

27

After beginning the show in a large white tent in the foyer, where a bloody and wounded sergeant brought news to Scottish King Duncan of a devastating battle, audience members were then ushered into another world: Scotland, as surreal, dark, and dramatic as it must have seemed to Macbeth himself as his guilt slowly began to unravel into madness. From being seated in a circle around a hovering cauldron spewing smoke, to gaping at spinning daggers on the wall along with Macbeth, to walking among the trees of Birnam Wood itself, audience members got the full experience as they walked from room to room throughout the show, each new location home to another scene more riveting than the last.

28

THE QUILL

Between the incredible and surreal sets designed and built by the Technical Theatre students, the vibrant costumes and makeup, and the riveting performances from Theatre students, Macbeth was a smashing success.

THE QUILL

Can you briefly give us an introduction of yourself?

Hi, my name is Ruby and I’m currently in my senior year!

How does it feel like finally being a senior? Honestly, I still feel like a 7th grader sometimes. Time flew by so fast, and I thought senior year was going to be very chill and full of senioritis and all, but it’s actually so hectic with the Macbeth play practice and student council. But hopefully, the second semester will be a lot more chill.

What are some of your favorite (or embarrassing/fun) moments you’ve had at ICS that you’d like to share? So one day in 10th grade, I was running from JCHL class and I sprinted down the Middle School side because I thought it was faster for some reason, and then I walked into the boy’s bathroom by accident. There was a guy there and another one just about to come in. The first thing I did was I put my hands up like I was going to get shot and then walked out very, very slowly. It was so embarrassing.

What are you looking forward to the most as of now? Right now, I’m just looking forward to Christmas break. I’m very excited for this Christmas because it’s going to be colder than expected, and I want to have those chilly Christmas vibes in Thailand.

Before graduating, do you have any advice for your underclassmen? I would say try to enjoy every moment as much as possible. I definitely struggle with this sometimes, but especially during freshman year, don’t overload yourself and just try to have fun. Don’t take classes or join clubs just because it’ll look good on your college resume -- do things that you actually want to do, find your passions, don’t be afraid to open up to new opportunities, and make sure you know that grades don’t define who you are as a person. Enjoy high school life while it lasts!

But aside from being business-centered, Lala gives some insight into her life:

38

THE QUILL

Hi Lala! Can you give us a brief introduction about yourself? Hi! My name is Lala and I’m in 11th grade.

How long have you been in ICS and what was your experience like here?

This is actually my second year in ICS and my experience here is quite good. It’s very fun being a part of the ICS community and everybody here is super nice and friendly! nov-Dec 2020

39

What is one of your most memorable events you had in ICS? SALT Trip!

Are you in any of the clubs and what are some things that you enjoy?

I joined multiple clubs like the Quill, Forensics club, Medsci club, and Business club. What I also enjoy doing the most is sleeping and binge-watching Netflix shows. I like to procrastinate a lot, so I tend to pull a lot of all-nighters which is very bad. This is why sleeping is what I enjoy doing the most right now!!

40

THE QUILL

What is the biggest thing that is going on in your life right now?

The biggest thing that’s going on in my life right now is probably finding passion, and figuring out what I want to study at college. Right now, I’m very confused about what subject to major in college, so I am just trying a bunch of new activities to see what I enjoy!

What big plans do you have for this year?

I am planning to go for an internship at a hospital with my best friends this year. I am very excited for this opportunity! I will also be launching a new product for my brand RARIN. Please go help support @rarinbylala! Also, 10 percent of the proceeds will be donated as well! So stay tuned!

Alumni Interview:

ALLAN RUBIO Interview by Emily Rubio

nov-Dec 2020

43

Hi Allan, can you please introduce yourself? Hi, my name is Allan. I graduated in 2019 and am a student at Dartmouth College now. Since I can’t go back to campus, I’m taking classes virtually from home. How has the shift from school on campus to online school been? It hasn’t been that good. It’s true that I don’t have to go to class as often and I can study from the comfort of my bedroom, but finding motivation to study and staying up late for classes in EST can be difficult. Is there anything you miss most about being on campus? Yes, I miss many aspects of campus life such as my friends, the professor-student interactions, and club meetings. But I’m also glad to be back with many loved ones here in Thailand. What’s your favorite course that you have learned at Dartmouth? I can’t really say for sure. Each one has its enjoyable aspects but they can also be really rigorous. I would say that the biology class I’m taking right now about cells, tissue, and organs, is one of the most interesting ones I’ve taken with a very approachable and nice professor. Is there any aspect of online school that you enjoy? Umm….no. Have you discovered any new hobbies or interests over quarantine? Yes, I started doing some programming from home and found out that I enjoy that. I wish I had more time to pursue it seriously. Are there any similarities or differences between ICS and Darthmouth? Academically speaking, many classes in college feel like AP classes I’ve taken at ICS. However, outside of classes, the scope of activities and opportunities I can pursue in college is much larger. I can easily join research projects or an entrepreneurial start-up, for example. 44

THE QUILL

What are some of the best memories you’ve made at ICS? I really enjoyed guided studies and organizing events for other students. What do you miss most about ICS? A bit of everything! What would be some advice you would give to Highschool Seniors going through the application season? Work hard, ask as many questions as possible, start early, don’t trust Reddit.

Alumni Interview:

Lydia Won Interview by Hannah Won

nov-Dec 2020

47

Please introduce yourself! Hello! My name is Lydia Won, and I attend Hope College in Holland, Michigan. What do you wish you could have done more (or less) in high school? One thing that I especially wish I could have done more would be to ask for help. I spent a lot of my time trying to figure things out myself. Now that I look back on it, high school would have much somewhat easier if I had just asked my teachers for help and advice. What school event was the most memorable experience for you? I think most alumni would probably give the same answer. The senior trip was the most memorable experience for me. It was a time where I could spend time with my close friends. It was also a time where I could really get to know more about others in my grade without having a hidden agenda (or just trying to get along). Which class/subject did you enjoy the most? I loved Mr. Mark Cooprider’s Brit Lit class. The books I read there were really interesting. They made me think more deeply about subjects/topics that I’d never thought about much before. I especially remember No Way Out; it focused around a life completely different from mine, yet it was also so close to home. I also enjoyed Philosophy and World Religions with Mr. Tim Baumgartner. To be honest, I didn’t like it at first. There was a lot of work and I just didn’t think that so much time should be spent because of it. But looking back, the topics were really relevant to my life and it made me think about the beliefs that I already had. It forced me to question myself and rethink why I thought in the way I did. What advice would you give to your senior underclassmen facing the anxiety and stress of an approaching college life? Make yourself your top priority. You deserve to be happy, you deserve to be respected. Know that you have value. 48

semester fin Exam Tips

Article by Hanna

As Christmas Break is coming near, students can’t help noticing the Mid-Term Exam crisis. Most of the students would be worrying about their arduous exam week. However, don’t be stressed! And don’t worry! These are some tips that will help you manage through the dreaded week: First of all, do not procrastinate! Since most of the mid-term exams include the content from the first semester, there is usually a huge amount of information to study for. Start studying about four to five weeks before the exam day. As you constantly study little by little every day, you will not have to worry about studying all in the last few days. And of course, as you study each day, your knowledge and skills will improve continually. Next, you should sleep well before the exam day. Some students try to cram the night before without sleeping, which will affect the ability to con50 centrate. THE QUILL Don’t drink too much coffee and get a good night’s sleep! You will

ah Kim feel less tired and will be able to focus on your test with less tiredness. Also, a long sleep will allow you o have a better memory as well, which will help you to remember the things you have studied and learned on the test day. Lastly, have a nice breakfast on the test day. You will be sitting on the chair and taking an exam for a few hours. If you have an empty stomach, then you won’t be able to concentrate well. Don’t you want to take an exam in a quiet room and not in a room that you can hear your stomach growling? These are some of the tips that I learned throughout my high school years. Study well, sleep well, and eat well, so you can get satisfactory results for the exams!

Good luck guys :)

Book Review:

The Poisonwood BookBible Review Words by: Krisha Ghandi

At this time of the year, the seniors who decided to study AP English Literature and Composition had the privilege of reading The Poisonwood Bible. The book is based on a family of five who takes a mission to the Belgian Congo in 1959. One of the most interesting aspects of the book has to be that readers are able to study and appreciate five perspectives in the book rather than the usual one. Nathan Price, a fierce baptist, forced his wife and four daughters to spread the word of the gospel. But instead of meeting their expectations, they were startled into a tragic reconstruction of Africa. It was impossible for Nathan to spread his intentions at this time especially because he did not understand the crowd. Alongside Nathan, Orleanna Price, and the girls found it incredibly difficult to fit into the community because they held different morals. The family had faced it all: problems ranging from communication issues to lack of supplies. The narrators of The Poisonwood Bible take us on a journey with them for us to experience and witness cultural differences we can encounter in our daily lives. The book teaches meaningful lessons on how to react and accept these differences.
