ICS Got Talent Returns Yo-yo champion Coleman Weimer wins first place. BY KITTY RODCHAROEN

LETTERFROMTHEEDITOR October 2013
Dear readers, I woke one morning, somewhat surprised to see October flashing on my screen. It really seems like first quarter has just slipped by. Between the countless assessments, daily sporting practices, and grueling study schedules, it can be hard to find a moment to catch a breath. With the various classes, life can steal the life from you. After cramming for the chemistry exam on Wednesday and Thursday nights for the exam on Friday, the weekend rolls by in seconds. I’ve always tried to set goals for myself, one of which is not to stress over weekends. But how can I truly set the stress aside when I have so much work to catch up with. It’s hard to remember that school is just a chapter of my life and not overwhelm or lose other aspects of it. But looking around us, there are many worthwhile activities that deserve our attention. Throughout the month, there were multiple events and issues in our school ranging from got talent to dress code issue and numerous sporting events. In this issue of the Quill, Gid brings us his perspective on skirt length and Kitty covers all the excitement of ICS’ Got Talent. This volume also includes more coverage and editorials from the other talented members from the Quill’s Writing Crew. Once again, thank you for reading and supporting our efforts to both inform and entertain ICS students. Quill-fully yours

The Botany Club is a club supervised by Mr. Andrew McCaskill, involving planting various trees and plants.
The Club is Yours By Jerrica Looi
If swimming is not for you, fear not! ICS offers a variety of extracurricular activities for those living the landlubber life. You could pick up a few fun profile pictures if you volunteered to model for the Trick Photography club (stop by the Middle School art room at 2:30 P.M. on Fridays, their last class will be October 18th). Or if you’re camera-shy, you could be the photographer instead! “We've just started - we've been playing with perspective and drawing with light,” - Ms. Katie Snoek (supervisor). Another new addition is the Botany Club! The members have been transplanting cacti to the HS roof on the third floor and have also made several water gardens in the same location. Their next project is an herb garden. “The students who are involved are very excited about making the ICS campus look botanically appealing as well as having fun along the way,” Mr. Andrew McCaskill (supervisor). Join clubs to your heart’s content, but be careful! The

Entrepreneurship Club and Banks in Action have been sharing a few students: “We have also not had all members present due to the Bangkok Bank sessions on Fridays,” -Mr. Nathan Bateman (Entrepreneurship Club supervisor). Kids, choose and commit! Clubs that are not yet full include; 7th Grade Band Extras (Mr. Jason B.), Grace Notes Chorus (Ms. Catherine Rogers), Hip Hop Dance (Mr. Telea Fakaua), IWICA Chess Academy (non-ICS supervisors), Botany Club (Mr. Andrew McCaskill), Handy-craft (Mrs. Porntip, Ms. Ying & Ms. Aom), Jazz it Up! (dance instructor Ms. Toya West). Visit link1 for more information or to enroll! --------------------Have a heart for others? Or need more hours? Join a Service Club! There are a growing few to choose from, two of which are supervised by Ms. Lissa Scott and Mr. Ben Radin. The Soccer Service Club has been trying to form a
community soccer league within local slums. So far they have held two try-outs for the children of the slums. They work with them to train their soccer skills, compete in teams, and, of course, to let the children have fun. Contact Ms. Lissa Scott (supervisor and an ICS soccer coach!) or Daniel Ha (9th grade). Mr. Ben too is recruiting; he needs 10 to 15 regular members to work with local Thai students (ages 5-13) to improve their English. In the past years, they have worked with two Thai schools and a community outreach outside of Bangkok. Just last year they cooperated with the ICS Community to provide the children with shoe-boxed gifts. “Most of the children at these schools are from lower-income families and are thrilled to get presents. I love to see the happy expressions when children open presents and get an awesome surprise,” –Mr. Ben Radin (contact Mr. Ben or Tien 12th grade).

ICS’ Got Talent returns By Kitty Rodcharoen
Flashing lights! Thunderous sounds! ICS Got Talent returns, bigger, better and sassier than ever before! Isaac Porter and Bethany Groot are hosting the show, an annual event of student council, this year. The three judges on this year's panel are Mr. Luc, Mr. George, and Mr. Steve – each adding mirth, shouting and sarcasm to the panel (though not necessarily in that order). Events were kicked off by a nail-biting performance by Kow Mun Gai and the band ‘#’, which ended up in second place. As the day progressed into the night, each of the fifteen performances gave jaw-dropping displays of talents and skills, fighting for the top position. In the end, Coleman, a high school freshman, championed the event, beating seniors Kow Mun Gai (second) and Jeirah (third). " Jeirah, our one and only middle schooler in the competition, amazed the audience with her powerful voice as she sung ___. Phenomenal, sensational, and prodigious – her singing defined it all. The vocal performance led her to win 3rd place, and with it the 500-baht voucher prize. " Next up were Leo and his bandmates, also known as Kao Mun Gai, captured the audience's attention with Jum TumMai (Why Remember). Chants and applauses filled the room as Leo serenaded the auditorium with his song. Personally, it seemed so sad, yet so hopeful - it was a

feeling of ambivalence, stirring up so many feelings. For such an outstanding performance, Kao Mun Gai received the second place, which consisted of a 1000baht voucher and 500 baht cash. " Last and definitely not least, Coleman gripped the audience with who yo-yo tricks, which wowed the crowd with a spectacular combination of gymnastics and dexterity. As Coleman jumped over his yo-yo, the auditorium roared - a mass of people flooded the auditorium pathway to vote for the performance. So many seats were empty it shocked my eyes. Eventually, the first place award, which is
the 1500-baht voucher and 1000 baht cash, was given to the freshman. " Exhilarating as it is, the ICS Got Talent was an utter success. A more or less universally positive feedback was received from the whole mass of the audience. On behalf of the Student Council, I would like to thank all who came to the ICS Got Talent Season 2, and all those who had helped it to become another memorable achievement of the ICS Student Council.
Middle schooler Jeirah (left) soon fond herself in the midst of the spotlight and attention of audience of all ages, enchanting them with her ginormous and powerful voice. Since you’re the Vice President of the Student Council, do you have any tips for the underclassmen who wish to be a part of the Council? Tips for underclassmen – treat every class equally. "Senior priority" has always frustrated underclassmen, and it's been hard for them to understand that we're going to graduate and have no opportunities left, so make sure they understand what you go through and the other way around. Are there any other upcoming events held by the Council that we should be aware of? Upcoming events held by the Student Council include: High School Lock-in, and then Banquet. Those are what we do pretty much every year, but there's always room for us to just add stuff along the way. with Tassanee Sanchez By PanPan Supatchapichai
Tassanee Sanchez is currently a sophomore who is known for her superb skills in a variety of different sports, and plays a huge role in many of ICS’ teams. In this interview, Tass gives us some tips on how she balances school and sports, as well as revealing her other obsession apart from athletics.
What are some of your hobbies? Some of my hobbies are playing basketball, soccer, volleyball, singing, and making cookie dough when I’m stressed to help me get through homework. I also like going on Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat and other social media sites!
How is 10th grade going so far? Tenth grade has been okay so far. So much more homework than ninth grade and two of my best friends left the school so it’s definitely different. Teachers have gotten a lot stricter and the pressure to maintain high scores is building. Hopefully the year gets better though.
Can you recommend us a good book to read? I don’t really read books, but I did read one that I can remember called "Jodie" by Cathy Glass. It’s about a young, abused and forgotten 6 year-old who is taken in by a foster caregiver after going through 19 different homes in 6 months, because of the troubles she causes. And throughout the book, Jodie reenacts different scenes from her past which end up breaking your heart.
Why did you choose to be in the volleyball team instead of the soccer team? I chose to play volleyball this year because Coach Jack was coaching, and he's like my second dad. What is your favorite subject? My favorite subject is personal fitness. It's nice to chill with friends and feel fit at the same time. Any tips on how to balance school work and sports?
Tips for balancing work and sports is to make sports your main priority and you'll be fine, but if your grades go down then don't blame it on the sports, blame it on Facebook and just take time off of that instead. If you were to die in 24 hours, what would you do? If I were to die in 24 hours, I would make amends with anyone I was not on good terms with, go to a Justin Bieber concert and run on stage, and then go to an African safari dressed in an outfit covered in meat, and have someone film me getting attacked by a lion… YouTube sensation? I think so! Are you excited for the Justin Bieber concert? I’m super exited for Justin Bieber! I've been watching him since he was just a boy on YouTube with not even 10,000 hits, so my room is filled with pictures of him since he was young up until today. Do you consider yourself a Belieber? I do consider myself a Belieber, yes! (:

Another huge season for ICS male’s volleyball By Win Leelamanthep
" This year's boys volleyball teams, both Varsity and Junior Varsity have undergone great change. What may be of the next season is yet to be decided, but we do know for a fact that they will do their best in representing our school through their athletic abilities and sportsmanship – not only within Bangkok or Thailand, but in various other countries including Hong Kong. ! Last year was a victorious season for both the Varsity guys and girls soccer teams in which they won plenty of medals. As you may know, winning certainly wasn’t easy for them, but dedication and perseverance paid it off. However, this year, many of the outstanding players have graduated, so fresh, new players have been added to team. The guys are doing pretty well in their matches, having only lost a few games, while the girls have tried their best to win as much as they could. " This season has had its ups and downs for both teams; they won some and lost some. Nevertheless, the players have been practicing exceptionally hard for four times a week. Even though practices are pretty gruesome, the captains of the teams have also been pushing their teammates to practice harder in order to become better teams in every way. Both teams have played about six matches. While the boys have already participated in two tournaments, the girls will be having their second tourney on Saturday, September 28, at RIS. On September 20-21, the Varsity guys played in an 11-aside tournament in which they placed third, earning them bronze medals. With high spirits, they played very well except for a few minor injuries. " “ T h e season's going pretty well since we've lost only 2 games in like 6 matches. We have been making progress towards the front line thanks to our dedicated coach, Ms. Lisa, and all our teammates. We are binding together with our Eagle spirit, we are enthusiastic, and will do our best to bring our team to the top this year!”- Jade, the co-captain of the girl’s team " In the end, this year’s Varsity teams might not become the champions in the various tournaments but they are still
determined to do their best. In order to become the ideal soccer teams, they need to have teamwork as well as exceptional sportsmanship. Knowing that they might not be the best teams didn’t bring their hopes down; instead it pushed them harder to work toward their goals. As most of the readers would know, winning isn’t everything. It's also about bonding with your fellow teammates, having fun, and doing what you love. People should recognize that there’s more to every competition than the adrenalin, the scoreboard, foul calls, and a winning goal.

Setting me Up for Success By Grace Hsieh
Sports play a substantial role in my life. Quite a bit of my time is consumed by my sport, volleyball; I consistently sacrifice sleep and other forms of relaxation to contribute to my team. Suffice it is to say, volleyball is a major component of my personality. It helps constitute my identity. So it is understandable that the fact that I am only a mediocre volleyball player creates a major struggle in my life. Everyday I am forced to come to terms with my incompetence, and it hits me especially hard on the court where the most I can do is just try not to mess up. " So why then, do I still pursue volleyball? The exercise is good, and the varsity experience is better, but my true anchor is the way it forces me to discover
9
things about myself through the team and the game. " I have always struggled with arrogance, the quality that I despise the most about myself. Astounding talent, the likes of which I can never hope to measure up to, surrounds me on the team, and it serves well to keep my ego in check. Half of the team is underclassmen, and all of them outstrip me in talent by miles. But being among the lower echelons of the team doesn’t make me bitter—instead it motivates me to strive for more, to work harder to excel. " Honesty and respect are all part of the universal rules for athletes, and unfortunately, I have difficulty with maintaining respect during games. But it is lack of respect for myself, which is just as detrimental. The condescension I feel for myself after each failure not only affects my gameplay, but also affects my teammates as well. Our team has a policy
of not letting anyone spiral into the vortex of self-hatred though. When someone slips, we vigorously shower her with encouragements, and the sense of unity it creates really does build up our collective confidence. Even though it’s only half way through the season, our team had already come a long way in bonding together, and it’s heart-warming to see just how much closer we can grow. " It takes more to be an athlete than just physiological fitness. A player must also possess the qualities of sportsmanship: humility, integrity, and perseverance. Playing volleyball doesn’t just keep my body healthy – it molds my character and identity, and I am made a better person each day by my game and by my team.

Two commoners. Two victims. One physical, the other mental. Two lives that are forever changed.
Masterplan Metabolized by Merry Man By Keshav Garg
Today, Syria is in need of aid. Today, Syria is need of support. Today, Syria needs freedom. Today,we have all the resources, and much more to aid, support, and free Syria from this hidden form of dictatorship. Yet, today, we aren’t pushing our hands backwards to bring Syria on a train headed to a destination best known as “ Utopia.” The men and women of Syria are no less than our kin - we all do come from the same parents and yet we choose to let our loved ones shatter by their inner selves. We let them create rifts among themselves using chemical weapons, and we allow them to barbarically rip themselves. We have forgotten that tomorrow may not
hold the opportunity to reach out to our anguished brethren in Syria. " Whenever tragedies like these pop out, I like to “Walk A Mile….” in the shoes of these nations. Take a minute to imagine your nation, no matter where you come from, exposed to this level of carnage. Envision yourself standing on the road fighting for your survival, without any sort of support and wealth to back you up. I doubt any of us can put ourselves in such circumstances, yet instead of understanding this issue and rallying for its remedy, we choose to evince the sin and protest against the solution of the horrid cause.
" Indeed, nobody has seen tomorrow and will ever be able to foresee the future. However, this does not mean that we should not strive toward a brighter future. Even I can provide the reasons for this inevitable catastrophe, but I believe that it is the effect of the matter that you can control, not the cause. Henceforth, you have two roads that will never converge, and it is up to you to choose. Of course, as I already said that the palm lines of destiny cannot be changed, but they can be brought to a far merrier future for all of us. Lastly, do remember to think as if you were not yourself and were a
ethical rebel wanting to retrieve his or her rights. May God be with you in whatever choice you make!

The iPhone 5c and 5s was released earlier this fall.
iPhone 5s(ame) and 5c(ostly) By FayFay Prasutchai
" The 20th of September would have been a pretty normal Friday, but Apple took it to the next level — the iPhone 5S and the iPhone 5c were released in 9 countries around the world. A day before, the new and revolutionary iOS 7 became available to the public after countless prototypes. Nevertheless, the reportedly revolutionary iOS 7 and the new iPhones have already been heavily criticized by many Android users for copying Android’s ideas in many aspects. This altercation goes on endlessly, but the question remains: is changing to iPhone 5S or 5c worth it?
11
In this skirmish of the Great iOS vs. Android War, Apple made its move by releasing the iPhone 5S, as the successor to the iPhone 5. The 5S came out with 3 new colors: space grey, silver, and gold. Since the first day of the release, gold iPhones were immensely anticipated. In most major Apple Stores in New York or LA, gold iPhones sold out in a few, short hours. A new addition to the 5S is an exclusive fingerprint validation system or the "Touch ID". After hearing about the newest function on this gadget, I
was afraid that the privacy infringement had been brought to another level: by collecting your fingerprints. Despite this shared concern, most reviewers praised the 5S as “the best smartphone in the market”. Some even said that the Touch ID would be a “market changer”. In my opinion, the 5S can change the market by setting a precedent for “fingerprint-based” 17,000 baht. It seems the C for smartphones in the future. ‘Colorful’ symbolizes ‘Costly’ instead. Simultaneously, Apple The 5S, however, s a price tag similar released the iPhone 5c to the public. to that of its predecessor, or around Apple's realization of yet another 20,000 baht. marketable gimmick they had failed to notice 6 years prior gave birth to the five distinct colors sported by this new model. Surprisingly, unlike its predecessors, Apple made a different move with the 5c by using polycarbonate instead of glass and aluminum. Let's all face the truth: polycarbonate is more durable than glass; victims of shattered screens would agree. Before the release of the new iPhones, it was predicted that the 5c would be an economical spinoff of the iPhone 5S. Its name "5c", colloquially interpreted as “cheap” seemed to imply that it would cost no more than 10,000 baht. Contrary to popular opinion, the 5c entered the market with a price tag of more than $549, or about
So far, after 2 days since the release of the new iPhones, Apple fanboys are still queuing up to be the first to own the products. But regarding the new features added in 5S and 5c, is it really worth it to upgrade from your iPhone to the new ones? I don’t think so. The S might as well have stood for “Same as always”, so I feel it is preferable to just keep it that way, and hope for something more innovative in the upcoming iPhone 6. The new iPhones are out in 9 countries, including the US, the UK, China, Singapore, France, Germany, Japan, and Australia. Yonder nations like Thailand might have to wait until the end of the year for the new iPhones to grace their nearest Apple retailers.

" Stanley Kubrick. Tis' a name not well known in the newer generations of movie-goers. In fact, I don’t even think the majority of our prestigious teachers know
who this man is. But Kubrick was, and still is a genius, a film savant. Close associates and fellow movie buffs may know that I am a big fan of Kubrick, and others who are semi-capable of higher-level thinking may figure that out from the tone of this little section (graciously bestowed upon me by our dear Editor-in-Chief). Those same close associates and fellow movie buffs also know how I had very recently gone on a Kubrick marathon and have emerged a changed man. Okay ,maybe not, but it was entertaining and I had no regrets. Sleeping at two in the morning while finishing 'The Shining' was significantly more important than some trivial scholastic test the very next day. Many of his films can be, and are, considered masterpieces and a particular one I would like to note upon is 'A Clockwork Orange'. Again close associates and fellow movie buffs would have also heard me rave about the glory of this movie. Be it some good old ultraviolence, or a very disturbed rendition of Singing in the Rain, the film had it all. Well my fellow droogs, it seems like once again I am limited in word count by the people who reign supreme over my writings, and so must cut myself short. Vive la Banana.

After all, I am simply a nobody, a child who doesn’t know better and very much is in desperate need of attention and guidance.
OUROPINIONS October 2013
" People around me tend to wear the same clothes. I think it’s because I go to a private school. People around me tend to not mind. I think it’s because they are used to it. People around me wear the same pants. I don’t think it’s because they go well with mundane maroon, baby blue, or... yellow (did you expect an adjective?). Some people around me dislike uniforms. I think I understand. Some people try to defend them. Now guess what this session of the Corner’s about. " Actually, the orders from the Editor in Chief were to discuss skirts and the evils of limiting how much girls can expose their kneecaps. To avoid making jokes that would get the Corner scrapped and because the school already has one person talking about and checking skirt lengths with unbeatable frequency, I decided to disobey her. Yet skirt lengths also factor into the discussion of mandated clothing. Why does it exist?
division, no matter how insignificant, goes against the very principle of compassionate servitude the school vocally espouses. Also, as with the Spirit of Unity, Eagles Pride isn’t really a thing. With good fortune, it will be a bygone catchphrase once I receive my caps and gowns. Let’s be brutally honest: for many students, ICS is a station of transition to the college life, during which one can briefly forget his or her mission to become a doctor, to the monotone and unrelenting salary hours that will break mortgages and relationships alike, and finally to retirement days filled with broken dreams, wasted opportunities, incontrovertible regrets, and, if you’re lucky, Type 2 diabetes. It’s fine to try to change that cheerful paradigm, but I’m not sure if uniforms manage to get the job done.
" Is it to inspire unity among the student body? To instill the spirit of community among the pupils? If so, it’s a slipshod and superficial attempt. Unity is a word that gets passed around (I look at thee with not a trace of scorn, Student Council) ironically like an unwanted child. We cherish the ability to bring ourselves together to further a greater, more noble cause, and identical shirts accomplish...what exactly? Is unity Note to Kid: “sucking your thumb won’t cure your father’s condition.” something so flimsy, so EASY that it can be automatically embodied when we don the blue-yellow crest of the school? If so, that sort of unity (or the illusion of it) " My confusion does not end with deserves not a place amidst us. the Administration’s policy. ICS has a bit of a frenzied, perhaps acquired, taste for " Do uniforms exist to set us apart overpriced mediocre clothing (again, my from others? Perhaps to build in us some gaze rests with thee, Student Council). of that Eagles Pride (whatever that True, it’s largely to fund the Senior Trip means)? I don’t see how that works (what isn’t), but that these clothes actually without a touch of elitism or emptiness. tip the revenue-cost balance to the ICS emphasizes having a servant’s heart vendors’ favor does tell quite a bit about toward others. The rare moments when our almost enslaving relationship with Chapel compels the student to briefly clothes. Why does each class obsessed refuse sleep seem to lend this thought with Class T-shirts? What do they some credence. However, a sense of

accomplish but siphon money from students who can’t care less about the clothes principles that supposedly stand behind them? And the SC shirts? Minions? Monsters? Really? I don’t see how drawing parallels to commercial moneybaits enhances our ‘treasured memories’. " Personally, I don’t have strong opinions about uniforms. My strong opinions lie against the sentimental arguments laid out by their advocates who do not appreciate the wonders that silence endows their frankly shallow ideas. Clothes, mandated by the school or not, are so trivial when you think about them, but somehow, they garner so much attention and valiant champions that they evoke a thankfully illusory sense of value. I suppose once uniforms have made their necessary exeunt from the scene of the Discussion of Life and Other Important Things, I’ll be satisfied and return to quietly pirating TV shows of the Internet. Now excuse me: I have to decide whether maroon or blue will be my color tomorrow.
