Madstop Records Rocks Knowles MPR Katie Daloia Staff Writer
SUNY Potsdam’s own student run organization, Madstop Records, hosted Madfest 2016 last weekend. According the Madstop Record’s facebook page, the music festival took place on Saturday, March 19, from 5-11 p.m. Five other groups were in attendance, creating six hours of live music for anyone interested in attending. The lineup for the event included the local groups “We Build Tomorrow,” “Dimladia” and “Meal & Flex.” Each of these bands played 45 minute opening sets before the two headlining bands, “Sir Cadian Rhythm” and “Formal 5.” Production Executive Emily King, a sophomore double majoring in music business and trumpet performance, expressed her own excitement in the completion of Madfest. “This is by far our biggest event of the semester,” King said. “I’m happy to see all the hard work Madstop Records and SES has put into this.” For an event this big, Madstop Records partnered with SES — Student Entertainment Services — and PMBC — Potsdam Music Business Club — to create great sound and lighting equipment for each of the bands to use.
Dominic Pellegrino, a sophomore majoring in chemical engineering at Clarkson University, was excited that his band, “Dimladia,” was able to be a part of this event. “We had such a great time performing with other bands,” Pellegrino said. “When we got there, the stage and sound equipment was already set up and in place. It made the change between sets flow a lot smoother.” For this event, Madstop reached out to two of the bands, Sir Candian Rhythm, a rock fusion band out of Long Island, New York and Formula 5 funk / reggae band out of Albany, New York to be the headliners said King. “We asked the top bands, from our record label that we are use to working with to be our openers,” said King. “Then we reached out the ‘Sir Candian Rhythm’ and ‘Formula 5’ to hopefully draw more people to the event.” Unlike other on campus events, the admission for this event was five dollars per person. Since Madstop Records is not funded by college life, students could attend this event for free, King said. With the weeks leading up to the event, Madstop put up posters around campus and posted the event on their facebook page to draw attention.
Local band “Meal & Flex” preforms at Madfest on Saturday, March 19.
“Originally, we were nervous about have to charge admission, especially for students,” King said. “Fortunately this event only ended up costing five dollars, and the turnout has been great so far.” In addition to this event, Madstop Records hosts a battle of the bands event each year. Last year, Madstop Received a total of 10 demo tapes from Clarkson and
SUNY Potsdam bands who wanted to participate in a chance to win, King said. Although they could only take six bands for that event, the turnout was equally as large as Madfest. “I would love to work with these guys again,” Pellegrino said, when asked about other Madstop events. “We (‘Dimladia’) are planning on sending in our demo tape for battle of
