Bengals Take Doubleheader from Bears Dan Bronson

Buffalo State (15-15, 5-7 SUNYAC) defeated the SUNY Potsdam softball team (9-20, 2-10) in both games of a SUNYAC doubleheader on Sunday afternoon. The Bengals held off the Bears for a 7-4 victory in the first game and then blanked Potsdam 7-0 in game two. Junior shortstop Jordan Ott (Hilton, N.Y./Hilton) got the Bears started quickly in game one. She walked to lead off the contest and came around to score on an error. Potsdam
threatened in the top of the second, but stranded two baserunners. The Bengals answered with three runs in the bottom of the inning, two coming on an RBI single from catcher Melissa Woods. Buffalo State extended its lead to 5-1 in the bottom of the third on back to back hits. The Bengals added two more on a double from left fielder Chrissy Rennard to make it a 7-1 contest in the bottom of the fourth. In the top of the fifth, senior left fielder Carina Chirinko (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) reached on a single and sophomore
pitcher Sami Hubinsky (South Glens Falls, N.Y./SUNY Adirondack) walked, forcing Buffalo State starter from the game. The shot closed the gap to 7-4. The Bears got the tying run to the plate in the form of Marsman in the bottom of the seventh, but she grounded out to third to end the game. Sarat (2-7) claimed the win after allowing two earned runs on five hits and two walks in 4.2 innings pitched. Adams gave up one run on Marsman’s homer and struck out three in the last 2.1 innings. Hubinsky fell to (3-8), allow-
ing seven runs on nine hits and striking out two in four innings. Freshman Alissa McCauley (Malone, N.Y./Franklin Academy) pitched two perfect innings to close the game. Marsman was 2-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored. In the finale, the Bengals scored one in both the first and third and then broke the game open with a five-run fourth. Oswego State (10-3, 5-2 SUNYAC) used an early run to pull away for a 19-8 win over the SUNY Potsdam women’s lacrosse team (7-7-, 3-4) on Wednesday afternoon. Lapinski got the Bears on the board first just 3:04 into the contest, but Oswego answered with eight in a row. Senior midfielder Esther Gabriel (Lancaster, N.Y./Lancaster), junior midfielder Kelsey Henderson (Cazenovia, N.Y./Cazenovia) and freshman attack Teresa Shattuck (Syracuse, N.Y./ Bishop Grimes) each scored twice for the Lakers during the stretch. The team’s split the final six goals of the half and Oswego led 11-4. McClusky got Potsdam’s second goal at 15:31. She then set up sophomore attack Murphy Newman’s (Canton, N.Y./Berkshire School)

51st goal of the season at 11:50. With just two seconds remaining in the half, senior defender Brittany Blake (South Glens Falls, N.Y./South Glens Falls) got the Bears’ fourth tally. After two more Laker goals, Newman struck at 25:12 and McClusky fed senior midfielder Maggie McCabe (Camillus, N.Y./West Genesee) just 32 seconds later. Newman’s goal gave her 99 points for her career (83g, 16a) and moved her into a tie for ninth place on the all-time scoring list with Mary English ‘01. Two more Oswego goals extended the lead to 18-7 with 7:21 to play. Lapinski got the Bears’ finale goal at 6:37 and Teresa Shattuck set up her sister, senior attack Erannan Shattuck (Syracuse, N.Y./Bishop Grimes), to close the scoring at 19-8 with 3:05 left. saves and allowed 16 goals in the first 47:31. Freshman Katie Longamore (Dexter, N.Y./ General Brown) allowed three goals and made three saves in the last 12:29. Lakers goalie Angela Ponto (Syracuse, N.Y./West Genesee) made eight saves for the win. Teresa Shattuck had a game-high nine points on two goals and seven assists, while Erannan finished with three goals and two assists. Gabriel had a contest-best five goals to go with an assist for six points. McCabe had a game-high five draw controls to move her into fifth place on Potsdam’s all-time list with 100.
