HEAD OF SCHOOL’S MESSAGE

MALLORY ROME

My first year at The Rashi School was filled with the excitement of growth, reflection, and change: new leadership, reaccreditation, a new strategic plan—and always, new learning. While I visited classrooms and became acquainted with our community, Rashi students and faculty focused on the studies and values-driven relationships that fill our classrooms and hallways. In November, we welcomed a visiting team from AISNE to complete our decennial reaccreditation process. Seven academic professionals from other AISNE-accredited schools in our region spent four days with us, exploring every corner of the school and every dimension of our program. They were enthusiastic visitors, visibly and unanimously impressed with the school and all it offers our students. We were very pleased to learn in the winter that we had been fully reaccredited. Their report commended Rashi, among other things, for “total congruency between mission and practice.” As I have come to see in the past year, the Rashi faculty are driven by a passion for growth and innovation. With academics at the heart of Rashi’s excellence, we review our curricular standards on a regular basis to make sure that they reflect the best thinking and latest research on the topic. In 2015-16, a team of teachers and administrators met

weekly all year long to review our standards for Social Studies, bringing a new framework and approach to the curricular standards review process as well as to Social Studies itself. You can read more about that process in this report, along with a description of Rashi’s latest approach to teaching about Israel. One of Rashi’s hallmarks is the twinning of outstanding academics with a profound and thorough focus on each student’s growth. Few schools live the “whole child” approach as fully as we do at Rashi. Early in the 2015-16 school year, Cindy Janower and Rebecca Burack completed their work establishing the framework for our new strategic plan. Their remarkable work gathering and analyzing data throughout the school and across constituencies offered us a focused and strong basis for identifying and responding to areas of strength and growth. Rashi’s outstanding lay leadership continues to support our ongoing evolution and improvement in so many ways. It is enormously rewarding to work at a school that so values growth, and equally fulfilling to lead it. We set high expectations for our students and for ourselves, and as a community we work together to exceed those expectations. Thank you, as always, for the many ways you create the kehillah (community) that is The Rashi School. L’SHALOM,

Mallory Rome Head of School 1 THE RASHI SCHOOL

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE KATHY COHEN

As we welcomed our new Head of School, Mallory Rome, the 2015-2016 school year offered the promise of new possibilities. Mallory immediately delved into Rashi culture, getting to know our faculty and staff, the school curriculum, our Board of Trustees, Rashi families and friends, and most importantly, the children who walk through Rashi’s doors every day. Our new Head of School exceeded the Rashi Board’s expectations. In her first year with us, she began a careful assessment of the state of our school, bringing a fresh perspective to maximizing Rashi’s strengths and addressing Rashi’s challenges. The Rashi Board was impressed with her collaborative and inclusive approach to leadership which has already fostered Rashi’s continued innovation and advancement. With excellent school leadership in place, the Rashi Board focused on completing an updated strategic plan for our school and beginning to implement a plan of action. Our strategic plan was skillfully designed through the very thorough and tireless work of Rebecca Burack and Cindy Janower. I am looking forward to this plan being shared in further detail over time, but its many components are organized into three pillars that capture the heart of the work Rashi will be focusing upon over the next many years.

Our first pillar, Deepening Our Impact, prioritizes Rashi’s continued refinement of teaching and learning such that the school will further deepen students’ learning, and continue to attract and retain the best teachers. Our second pillar, Expanding Our Reach, prioritizes both building our internal Rashi community and strengthening Rashi’s standing in the broader community. As we partner with other Jewish and community institutions, our goal is to make Rashi broadly known for its outstanding education, top notch faculty, and programmatic excellence. Our third pillar, Tackling Our Economic Realities, prioritizes Rashi’s financial sustainability. Securing Rashi’s future in our wonderful and permanent home will require building our endowment, paying down the debt on our beautiful building, maintaining a robust Annual Campaign, and continued strong enrollment. As I reflect upon the past year, I remain inspired by Mallory’s leadership, along with Rashi’s superb faculty, administration, and Board of Trustees. I am confident that the entire Rashi community can and will work together to achieve our school’s goals. As always, I am grateful for your partnership and am excited to work with all of you as we advance from strength to strength. B’KAVOD,

Kathy Cohen President, Board of Trustees

CURRICULAR STANDARDS REVIEW: SOCIAL STUDIES

The Social Studies committee shaped the scope and breadth of our curriculum.

During the 2015-16 school year, Rashi’s faculty took an in-depth look at our Social Studies curriculum. Teachers from each grade level, the Director of Curriculum and Instruction, the Heads of Lower and Upper School, and the Middle School Rabbi comprised the Social Studies Committee. Together, the members of the committee agreed that social studies is composed of deep and enduring understandings, concepts, and skills from each discipline. Social studies emphasizes skills and practices in preparation for decision making. Keith Civin, sixth and seventh grade social studies teacher, recalled a student’s question, “Why do we call it Social Studies and not History?” The first task of the committee was to provide clarity to Rashi’s definition of the subject; they created a mission statement, found below. As a result of the committee’s work, teachers in grades K-8 share a common language and will be addressing civics, history, economics, and geography through rigorous content designed to spark curiosity, deepen investigations, and enable students to apply knowledge and ideas in real world settings. At heart, social studies is about understanding the things people do and using

11 THE RASHI SCHOOL

questions to direct our investigations into the world. Heidi Chapple, Head of Lower School, and Rabbi Sharon Clevenger commented on the K-8 focus of the committee and the benefit of meeting together each week to post questions across grade levels to ensure continuity of curriculum from grade to grade. As the curriculum map unfolded, teachers added units to their existing curriculum to provide rigorous instruction in each of the four domains. Teachers developed standards for Kindergarten through Grade 2, Grades 3-5, and Grades 6-8, along with indicators for each standard to measure progress towards intended outcomes. The committee will continue to meet during the 2016-17 school year to implement curriculum that supports the newly crafted social studies mission statement, which recognizes the interdisciplinary exploration of social sciences and humanities.

MISSION STATEMENT In social studies, students use inquiry-based exploration to develop enduring understandings of the human experience. Through the study of civics, history, economics, and geography from varied perspectives, students will become active and engaged citizens of the 21st Century.

The purpose of these observations is to give teachers data in a nonjudgmental way that they can use to improve their practice, and therefore the experience of our students. However, other benefits emerged. Faculty enjoyed the collaborative nature of this process. Often, the teachers performing the observations noticed

JEWISH LIFE Rashi’s Hebrew teachers, primarily comprised of Israelis, organize a schoolwide celebration on Yom Ha’atzmaut.

Israel must play a central role in a Jewish independent school education. In fact, we must make Israel as real a place and as close to our hearts as our own home country. In each grade, our students learn about Israel and the study of the land has been specially emphasized as a result of our recent curricular review in Social Studies. From their first to their last days at Rashi, students engage in meaningful learning about Israel, from geography to culture to politics and leadership. The first grade curriculum places special emphasis on Israel learning, and often integrates it into social studies and science lessons. When students learn about American heroes, they simultaneously learn about Israeli heroes including archaeologist Yigal Yadin and Prime Minister Golda Meir. They compare Israel’s Prime Minister to the President of the United States. As they experience and study the seasons in Massachusetts, they track the seasons in Israel, as well. And, most thrilling to the students, they create an enormous map of Israel, then invite community members who have lived in Israel to visit the map, identify their homes, and teach about life in that part of Israel.

In anticipation of their trip to Israel, eighth graders learn about the Jewish homeland throughout their final year at Rashi. The social studies curriculum guides students to explore the genesis of the modern State of Israel, from Herzl’s initial vision of “The Jewish State” to the main political and physical battles surrounding the founding of the state. In Jewish Studies, students explore the website Israel21C.org which contains thousands of articles “uncovering the country’s rich and diverse culture, innovative spirit, wide-ranging contributions to humanity, and democratic civil society.” Students chose one story that interested them and created Google Slides presentations to share with their fellow classmates what they learned. Finally, they presented their stories to one another and voted on “The Best of Israel21C.” The assignment proved to be an effective means of introducing students to stories about Israel that do not necessarily appear in the news. Though our learning about Israel at Rashi is strong, it can always become stronger, and we are currently exploring ways to incorporate Israel even more deeply into student learning and life.

As I approached the Kotel for the first time and gently lay my hands upon it, I started to understand why these stones were so important. At that moment it felt like I was part of something bigger than myself. — Jenna S. (Rashi 2016) 13 THE RASHI SCHOOL

ANNUAL CAMPAIGN 2015-2016 SONYA WILDER

Rashi’s 30th school year was marked by the longstanding commitment that the Rashi kehillah has for the school. We are all deeply grateful for the support that the school receives from parents, alumni parents, alumni, grandparents, faculty, staff, current and former Board members and friends. To that end, I am delighted to announce that the 2016 Annual Campaign raised a record $1.279 million from more than 800 donors. Additionally, an impressive 87% of parents supported the Annual Campaign, a new participation record. Thank you! Todah rabah! The cornerstone of Rashi’s fundraising efforts is the Annual Campaign, which directly affects the daily lives of our students and faculty. Contributions to the Annual Campaign are typically unrestricted gifts that help bridge the gap between tuition income and the school’s operating expenses. This vital support allows the school to sustain strong academics and Jewish life, recruit and retain our outstanding faculty and staff, make a Jewish education financially accessible, and shape our future leaders in the Jewish community and the world. We ask everyone to give generously according to their means, and encourage families to make Rashi their top philanthropic priority. Each and every contribution is truly important and appreciated. This year we also grew our alumni engagement through programming and events. Initiatives included expanded outreach via social media, our fourth annual 5-year reunion for alumni and alumni parents, a brunch with NYC area alumni, and a new attendance record of 60 alums at the Annual Dinner. The connection to the school and the friendships formed at Rashi often last a lifetime and are apparent whenever our alumni get together. Rashi is fortunate to have so many members of its community who show their support for our remarkable institution in many ways. Rashi continues to go from strength to strength because of this community investment. WITH GRATITUDE,

Sonya Wilder 2015-2016 Annual Campaign Chair

I learned that to be a leader you have to take into account everyone else’s opinions and ideas, no matter how much you disagree with them. I learned that in order to become an effective leader, you have to stay humble. Rashi has taught me how to inspire, how to make the most of my education, how to do more, and how to achieve great things. I will take these important values of leadership with me throughout my life. - Lily K. (Rashi 2016)

Many people think the primary purpose of school is to teach you to solve equations, learn grammar, and speak another language. While a Rashi education achieves all that, Rashi also accomplishes something vastly more important. Rashi teaches you how to be a good person, which in my opinion is the most critical life lesson a student could ever receive. — Eli R. (Rashi 2016)
