Gather The Women by Kimberly Smith

Greetings

RAY Team member Kimberly says... SYNCHRONICITY; being synchronous or happening or coinciding at the same time. To me that means everything in my life is in sync; when your life is balanced and everything comes together. That can be a difficult thing for most us to do. I know myself, it seems like when one part is going well, something else isn’t. But since making a life change and starting to help spread the word of The RAY’s movement and message, I realized that positive thinking and a goal orientated approach is all that is needed to bring balance to my life. Even if something in my life is not exactly as I want it, I have learned to embrace that as a challenge to make it the way I want it. This was not an easy thing for me to do. In the past, I would get all upset if I got one thing in my life just right and something else went askew. But that is life! We get sidetracked or derailed! The key is to look at that as a new way to make your life better. Set a goal, strive for it, work for it and embrace it! It is ok if everything or nothing is as you want it right now. Don’t worry or get upset over it. Instead, see it as a chance to set goals for yourself. They may change over time as things in your life change. And that is perfectly ok. Learning to flow with life’s changes and accept that there are some things you can’t control was the most important step for me. I like to control my life. As some of you may remember from previous issues, I spent much of my life with someone else controlling it. So it was, and sometimes still is, hard for me to let go of that and know that by setting goals and working towards them is my control! So when life throws a curveball, catch it… and send it back your way. Shine On~

Childhood is tough, and it’s tougher for girls. That’s why Girls on the Run® was founded; to help girls 8 through 13 become all they can be – physically, emotionally, and socially. Girls on the Run® is a life-changing program where girls meet after school to train for a 3.1 mile run/walk and participate in self- esteem enhancing games and conversations. Our goal is to encourage positive emotional, social, mental, spiritual and physical development at an age when girls need it the most. We’re looking for volunteers to support this unique program. Her Story

Synchronicity

How It Brought Love to Me When I Wasn’t Looking

BY TARNIE FULLOON

I love stories about synchronicity. You know: divine “coincidence,” when you are in the flow and the universe provides for and communicates with you in the most amazing (and sometimes funny) ways. When we are present in our bodies and in the flow in our lives, this is our natural way of being. I know when I am in the flow of synchronicity because I find myself saying “Thank you, Universe!” many times a day. When I am fully present and connected to my body, there is no doubt… synchronicity happens!

about him. The next day in the morning yoga class the teacher instructed us to pair up with someone. I turned to the next person, not recognizing who it was and again, within moments, the energy with this person was extraordinary. Guess who it was! Over the course of the weekend, we got to know each other better. And although I was still “not dating”, it became very clear very quickly that we were meant to meet… there was no mistake here. Synchronicity! We have now been together ten years and we’re still madly in love.

“When I am fully present and connected to my body, there is no doubt … synchronicity happens!” When I am disconnected and too much in my head, guess what? Things get out of alignment and then my life doesn’t seem to flow as well. I bump into things, I just miss the TV program I wanted to watch, the shop just closed, and so on. When I am present in my body, things come easily and effortlessly; there is a flow. Everything I need or want turns up in just the right way at the right time. When synchronicity takes over, it can bring us amazing blessings and miracles. My personal favorite synchronicity story is how I met my “loveof-my-life” husband. Through a number of synchronous events, I was invited to teach at a weekend retreat. At that time, I was taking a break from dating. I was finally in a place where I was happy on my own, loving how my life was unfolding and feeling good about myself. I was open to what life might bring, but I was certainly was not looking for a relationship! At the retreat sign-in, I looked up and felt this man’s presence. Not seeing his face, I thought “Wow! Who is he?” Then I remembered that I was not interested in dating, so I moved on and forgot

Awareness = Change BY LINDA HOM

“Awareness means you simply see who you are without struggling to change. Your awareness makes all the necessary changes, not your struggle.” -unknown

Now that it’s March, you’ve had two months to work on your New Year’s Resolution. How are you doing? Perhaps your goal was to become healthier, exercise more or spend more time with your family? Every year, many of us start the year with great intentions, but then we quickly relapse into old habits. So let’s take this opportunity to bring some self-awareness into our actions, which will ultimately help us succeed in meeting our resolutions. Why is it so hard to stick to and follow-through with our goals? Ending habits and changing behavior are some of the hardest things to do. It may be reassuring to know that researchers have found that it takes most people about 5 attempts before we actually succeed. So you’re not alone in your struggle. This, however, should not be an excuse for you not to set goals. In fact, set your goals really high, be specific about them --but be kind to yourself if you “fail” the first few times. If it is eating healthier that you want to accomplish, write down exactly what you want to change in your eating habits, by when, how to do it and what you need to do to meet this goal. The more specific you are in setting goals, the more likely you will be to achieve them. By changing the

10 THE V•RAY TheRAYmagazine.com

wording from “resolutions” to “goals,” they become attainable realities. Write them down, look at them everyday; reward yourself for the smallest of steps towards reaching them! Now that your goal is crystal clear, be absolutely aware of who you are. If your goal is to be a healthier you, be aware when your food and lifestyle choices are not supporting your goal. Your awareness makes all the necessary changes, not your struggle (this means simply being aware of your choices and not beating yourself up for eating that cookie or skipping your exercise). How To Double Your Energy Naturally BY JUDI MJELDE

Do you ever feel like you’re running on empty? Do you feel a few cups of coffee will carry you through the day? We say kick the caffeine and eat your greens! One of the easiest ways to double your energy naturally is to embrace a plant- based diet.

Whenever possible it’s ideal to eat local, organic foods. Organic foods are better for your body and the environment

We were 11 years old when we became Vegetarians. Although we omitted meat from our diet, we still were “Junkatarians.” It wasn’t until we started running Cross Country and track and breaking school records at Beverly Hills High School that we realized certain foods gave us more energy than other foods. We started eliminating white processed foods in favor of whole grain foods, and we stopped eating any foods with artificial flavors, additives and preservatives. We substituted honey, agave, fruit sweeteners and maple syrup for sugar in recipes. We enjoyed eating and making healthy foods so much that we wrote our first book, How to Survive Snack Attacks… Naturally, when we were 17 years old. Whenever possible it’s ideal to eat local, organic foods. Organic foods are better for your body and the environment. We place or categorize foods into two groups: Upper Foods and Downer Foods. Upper Foods are complex carbohydrates such as whole grains, vegetables, fruits, nuts, seeds, legumes and low fat dairy products or non dairy products made out of soy, rice and almond

12 THE V•RAY TheRAYmagazine.com

milk. Downer Foods are meat (which is high in saturated fats and cholesterol); foods filled with white refined flour, sugar and preservatives; alcohol, coffee, and caffeinated “energy” drinks. Caffeinated beverages, like alcohol, dehydrate rather than replenish your body’s fluid supply, and dehydration is the number one factor for fatigue. Fresh water is a much better beverage choice, and refill a stainless steel bottle with filtered water instead of buying plastic bottles. Editor’s Note: Before changing any eating habits, check with your doctor or nutritionist to ensure you still meet the daily requirements for all vitamins and minerals, as well as caloric intake to keep you at your optimal health! Klean Kanteen and Kangen Water are a perfect place to start. Check out Klean Kanteen...Reducing landfill waste by offering non-leaching, stainless steel beverage containers. What’s the World

The World View With Madonna Dersch

It is amazing when it happens: seemingly unrelated occurrences by chance happen together in a meaningful manner. Often seen as predictions, meaningful occurrences tap into our hopes and concerns. It’s these moments of synchronicity that make us feel part of something bigger. And while we feel interconnected by this phenomenon, our response to these happenings is what truly connects us. Diverse cultures worldwide have independently nurtured similar traditions of synchronicity. (Give that a minute to sink in: the synchronicity of synchronicity.) There is something about gazing at the night sky that makes one feel connected to something bigger, and as long as people have been stargazing, they have been using the stars to map — both physically and metaphorically. That horoscope app that you installed on your phone has quite a legacy: astrology can be traced back as far as ancient Babylonia and across every populated continent. Runes were used in ancient Nordic and Chinese cultures for both prediction and protection and are used similarly to Tarot cards. Tarot cards were initially used as game cards in fifteenth-century Italy and evolved into mysticism in the late 18th century. Their mysti-

cal use was spread throughout Europe by the nomadic Romani cultures of Eastern Europe, more colorfully referred to as Gypsies. Often associated with the Romani, scrying — gazing into a crystal ball, bowl of water or mirror — dates back to ancient Persia and forces focused concentration, not unlike meditation. Tasseography — the reading of drinking-cup sediment — arose independently in Asia, the Middle East and Ancient Greece: tea leaves were read in Asia, coffee grounds in the Middle East, and wine sediments in Ancient Greece. The use of divination tools can be a creative form of brainstorming. Slowing down to focus and organize one’s thoughts makes for effective problem solving: consider symbols, their meaning for you at the time, and your feelings toward them to analyze your synchronous moments. Madonna Dersch wears 9–5 marketing glasses (her day job!) until she wonder-spins into her golden tiara. She fights for truth, justice and the creative way with her husband, dogs, cats and honeybees from their antebellum house restoration in historic Petersburg, VA.

Inspire Your Creativity and Set Goals With a Global Flair: • Pick a card: jot down your thoughts, concerns for the future, assets and talents on index cards and select them randomly. Let these personalized runes inspire associations for problem solving and goal achievement. • Now it’s your turn to scry: try meditating on a reflective surface when concentrating on yourself. • Have a tea party: invite your best girl friends over for loose tea. When only dregs are left, read each other’s leaves. After all, who knows you better than the girls?

14 THE V•RAY TheRAYmagazine.com

• Stargaze: spend some time on a night walk. Make up your own constellations by projecting what you see on the stars. • Neither wrong nor write: journal your dreams or by using a free writing method and without judgment. Return to analyze your writing with a fresh and external perspective. • Make it mythic: create your own hero story and let the story predict your outcomes.

Body Image

Improve Your Body Image and Self-Esteem in 7 Simple Steps BY CATHERINE CARDINAL

D

ating seems to bring up so many of our body issues. Maintaining a balance between weight, selfesteem and a healthy body-image seems to be a constant battle for women. We don’t tend to see ourselves accurately and are often most critical when we are the most vulnerable. Why do we do that? Usually because of negative programming received from parents, peers and the media. How can we live up to all the expectations placed upon us? How do we deal with all the shoulds and shouldn’ts about how we need to look? The key is to stop shoulding on yourself! Then allow yourself to believe in your ability to take positive steps towards inner and outer peace with who you are and how you look. Here are seven steps towards a new and improved you!

1 2 3 4 5 6 7

Learn to set reasonable goals. Whether it’s about your exercise routine or eating habits, don’t set the bar too high or you may find yourself resisting and then failing. Remember that a healthy, balanced life is a journey of steps. Give yourself permission to win by keeping a steady workable pace. Single out what is beautiful about you. Perhaps you love your eyes, or your legs, but are unhappy with other parts. Focus on those parts that work for you and know that everyone has parts they love and parts they wish they could change. Take time to look into a mirror and focus on the good stuff. Think before you speak and be a generous listener. When you take the time to hear others and contemplate what you are saying back, you are likely to have less conflict and form more genuine bonds with others. The ability to receive the love of great friends who accept us for exactly as we are is a great asset that will help us love and accept ourselves. Take pride in your accomplishments. We are all good at something. Make a list of those things which you feel really good about. Read that list every day. “I am kind, courageous, a great swimmer, etc.” Believe in your competency and also your ability to learn and accomplish new things. Fast one day every two weeks. Give your body a rest by feeding it only vegetable and/or fruit juices. This cleansing will help keep your weight down, minimize cellulite and give you energy. On all other days, focus on eating well, including lots of fruits and vegetables in your diet and avoiding refined flour and sugar. When you do decide to treat yourself to chocolate cake and ice cream, it will be a well-deserved treat! You may find that the more you avoid these foods, the less you crave them. Be aware of your inner critic: that negative voice in your head which puts you down. When you hear it, tell it to “pipe down and take a hike!” You are in control of your body and mind and no one, even yourself, is going to make you feel not good enough. The critic is a result of all the negative things you have heard or experienced in your life. Let it all go and create positive scenarios in your head. Allow yourself to be creative and imaginative with your new-found supportive voice. Be in the moment. When you accept the reality of your life exactly as it is now, you stop the futile worrying about the past and the future. Take a moment each day to meditate on what is good about right now. Focus on that. Give thanks and gratitude for what is good and believe that things can get better for you. Having these positive thoughts is the secret to a happier life.

Begin Within

Letting Go

...So You Can Move On BY MELANIE LUTZ

What I didn’t know about letting go was that it was going to be a daily, hourly, lifelong quest. Let go. Let go. Let Go. If you love something, for goodness sake set it free. Sometimes it is so easy to give advice about letting go and so hard to follow it. I held on to so many things for fear letting go would destroy me, that I trapped myself in a panic. A panic I couldn’t escape from, a panic that frightened me. In the weeks before the final dissolution date of my marriage I found myself typing this note to my therapist: Wow. I’m totally feeling out of my skin. I am grasping around over these weeks. I was exhausted after our chat. I went to an event last night… and when I got home, went to sleep completely grief stricken and traumatized. I’m going to be free ... free of everything and I guess I’m scared and nervous. I made a few promises to myself.

1 No matter what I would push

through my fear and anxiety when support was offered.

2 I would finish whatever writing ideas I had started without the fear of acceptance (financial, critical etc.).

3 I would “be myself”

enthusiastically and without regret. Thanks to the work we’ve done together, one and two are looking good and three is brightening. Her response helped me tremendously: I expect a lot of grief to be coming up now. Letting go - even if it is letting go in a positive way, brings up grief. In addition, the legal ending of your marriage, even if it feels like a relief, will probably bring up grief as you let go. Keep breathing through it and ride the fluctuating pain with as little resistance as possible. “Ride the pain with as little resistance as possible.” Let go. Know that grief is part of the process. Recovery to me was so about mastering letting go, well, actually being able to let go, understanding its nuances and its powers and then moving on. Once you let go, you’ve made a choice. Don’t bemoan or spend energy feeding what comes up; notice that it is tough, feel it, embrace it, but let it pass. Do not let it drag you down.

20 THE V•RAY TheRAYmagazine.com

I would never have thought the ten minutes through the corn fields to get milk and eggs from the local dairy farm when I was growing up would be replaced by a trip down Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills to the Whole Foods Market. I would never have thought so many things were possible if I hadn’t taken a first step and let go of what I had known. There is no way I could have drawn a map that would have led me to where I am. Some of the difficulty and my personal angst came from trying to achieve results in a ballbusting straightforward linear fashion. When I let go of that which confined me or defined me I ended up where I wanted to be. Without fail. I learned to love letting go. Excerpt from Melanie Lutz’s THE BARE MELCESSITIES: Walking Out. Financial Management 101 Troubleshooting Tips BY ELLEN ROHR

A

s a business consultant, I see lots of financial reports. Most of them have mistakes. The incorrect data in those accounts are the result of mistakes in data entry. In my consulting work, I start by helping my clients get to KFP – a KNOWN Financial Position. Let’s get the accounting corrected. That’s the first step. From there, we can see the impact of operational, marketing and sales behaviors. The good news is that you can always improve your financial situation once you know what it is. I am kind of like Super Nanny. I show up, we work together to clean up the accounting and we put simple systems and routines in place to help you stay at a KFP.

I am here to help you. The following are a few tips and tricks for finding and fixing the messes in your accounting program.

Financial Fix Tips and Tricks... 

probably YOU. I often hear something along  It’s these lines, “That number wasn’t there yesterday.

Stay current with your financial reporting. I recommend a weekly review of the Balance Sheet and Income Statement. Once a year at tax time is just not going to cut it. It is so much easier to find and fix a mistake that happened in the last few days than it is to track down something goofy that you did six months ago. Also, you can fix the mistake in the current month. That is better than having to re-open a previous month and adjust it. Once I “close” a month, I don’t like to open it again.

line by line down the Balance Sheet  Go and Income Statement and look for “weird” things. KFP means that every account is right. It reflects what you have in Assets, what you owe in Liabilities and what you own in Equity. The Sales account should equal what you have sold for that period of time. The Expenses should reflect what you have expensed for that period of time. The financial reports should be current and true.

It must be a QuickBooks problem.” That weird dollar amount in your financial reports probably has a very simple explanation. Somebody, maybe you, entered that information. to trust your intuition. As  Learn your understanding of double entry accounting increases, trust your gut feeling that a dollar amount is wrong or “weird.” So often, I help someone fix a problem and they respond, “I thought that might be the problem!” If you have that thought, follow it and see what you uncover.

In Sync With Parenting Helping Your Child Shine a Light BY TRACI GAFFNEY

Life is a flow. When our flow is off, life can feel like it’s falling apart. Many times our flow is taken off course because of issues related to our children. Depending on their ages and how many you have, children can have a massive impact on your day, week and life. The key is to find a way to flow down the river with our children, as opposed to paddling upstream. When my daughter, Alexis, was born, she was a firecracker. She was demanding, wanted what she wanted, and definitely had a voice. She is a true Aries. Being a Pisces, I was very different from her. It didn’t take me long to realize that this infant was not going to change for me. It was my job, as the adult and the guardian of this Being, to meet and accept her where she was. I found a way to get into sync with her energy. As she’s grown up over the past nine years, we have had many conversations about energy and meeting people where they are. Now, we meet each other and it is truly beautiful. Lesson #1 in parenting: you can’t change anyone else. With our children, many times we think that’s our job … molding these little people into wonderful big

people. The “molding” messes up the “in sync” part. Our job as parents, in reality, is to help our children uncover their authentic selves and help them shine their Light in the world. If we can see parenting from this perspective and approach our children from a place of curiosity, we will have a much easier time of raising them and they will have a much easier time of being who they are and bringing their gifts to the world as adults. We need to ask questions, take time to sit on the floor and connect, look into their eyes, and be with them. This allows us an opportunity to get to know them, to help them understand themselves and for them to get to know us. Doing this when they are young will create a smoother road in the teenage years as well. Whatever the ages of your children, I recommend starting now. It’s never too early and it’s never too late. And, don’t forget to have FUN! Traci Gaffney is an expert on parenting and pregnancy. To sign up for her free parenting newsletter, go to ALovingWay.com. Top Five Ways To... With Heather Rem

Be Your Biggest Fan! It may seem awkward at first, but congratulate yourself daily on the things that you do that make you proud. Smile, get enthusiastic and pump up your energy level to really say, I’m good at what I do, I’m a great friend, an amazing mom or dad etc. Be your own cheerleader, not your biggest critic.

Remember, You are Doing the Best You Can

How many times have you said to yourself that you should have done something better or different? We have a tendency to beat ourselves up for not doing our best when really we are always doing our best at any given moment. When you walk away from a situation feeling uncomfortable or awkward, say to yourself, “I’m doing the best I can.” This will help alleviate the anxiety you feel around a situation and help you to give yourself a break!

Don’t Judge Yourself, Don’t Judge Others

Judging can really take away the positive way we look at ourselves and others. Remember that to really love yourself, you have to look within at all of the wonderful things you have to offer yourself and others, not out at the world constantly judging yourself against others. When you find yourself looking at your friends, co-workers, etc. wishing you were more like someone, try telling yourself to “stop judging” and say something nice about yourself. If you are judging someone else negatively, say something nice to yourself about them. Each day, do one thing for someone else without expecting anything in return. Write a list of your “gifts” as a person and start sharing them to help others. The more you give without expecting something in return, the more you will receive. Watch your life take on new meaning and purpose!

Give Back

Each day, do one thing for someone else without expecting anything in return. Write a list of what you think that your “gifts” are as a person and start sharing them to help others. The more that you give back without expecting something in return, the more you will receive. Watch your life take on new meaning and purpose!

Be Thankful

At least once every day, take a moment to say to yourself or write down what you are thankful for in your life and what you appreciate about yourself as an individual. Gratitude is the best way to begin to truly create your own InnerPower. Heather Rem of InnerPower Coaching is a Personal Transition Coach specializing in working with individuals in career and life transition. National Women’s History Month BY KIMBERLY SMITH

Editor’s Note: This month we celebrate National Women’s History Month. And with it The RAY’s mission and message to all women and the men in their lives.

movement—a new wave of energy—to joyfully reclaim feminine principles for creating a world of peace, balance, and well-being for all.

Women need other women in their lives. Our families, friends, significant others and children are the most important things in our lives. And in order to be the best mother, grandmother, wife, girlfriend, friend, sister and daughter we can be, we need other women around us. They support us, understand us, lift us up and push us on when we need it. They provide a sounding board, a shoulder to cry on and laughter. Women are the backbone of family

Marylin Nyborg, one of the founding organizers recently shared with us a current GTW initiate, “We are framing the central crisis of our times in this manner: the devaluation of the feminine allows the degradation of the Earth, the abuse of women, their exclusion from influence, and ultimately the decline of all life. Solutions begin by understanding how the imbalance of the masculine and feminine is the root cause of the fundamental issues of

to look at herself and her own gifts and talents, her own perspectives and power. With these, women are asked to bring these gifts into their communities, workplace and anywhere around the world in full partnership with men. GTW’s vision could have never been said better than in the words they share on their website. “Linked globally by our interactive website, we invite women to demonstrate their courage to risk leaving old conformities by joining with millions of others throughout the world to celebrate women’s true worth, to express shared concern for our human family, and to create and sup-

Women need other women in their lives... They support us, understand us, lift us up and push us on. and society. Our hearts, strengths and woman’s wisdom are the core of life. And in this, we have the power of the feminine to bring so much to the world around us, together. Women in our lives can be friends, our mother, grandmother, aunts or sisters. They can be our book club, sewing group or yoga class. But not everyone has these key women in their lives. Or we need something more. Gather the Women (GTW) is a nonprofit organization founded to bring together women and women’s organizations into one network. These networks of women share a belief that the time is now to activate the incredible power of women’s wisdom on a planetary scale. They are part of an exciting, fast-growing

our time. Let us find new ways to educate, communicate and begin the transformation to a balanced humanity in right-relationship to the feminine, masculine and Mother Earth.” The organization also offers a sisterhood for women everywhere through a global matrix of smaller circles and gatherings cities and towns across the nation and around the world, like The RAY which is a regional coordinator. GTW offers women opportunities to connect through gathering and sharing of stories and life experiences. It is a place for inspiration and to inspire others. It encourages leadership, collaboration of women everywhere without competition or mistrust of each other. GTW invites women

port actions that will enable humanity to live together in a balanced, harmonious and peaceful world.” Gather the Women is evoking at a profound level an experience of our own woman’s worth to the world. As women we bring life forward. We are in touch with the cycles of life and we function in a context that is deeply relational. We have the capacity to generate creative solutions that benefit all life on the planet. Gather the Women is creating a rich exchange of cultural values to dissolve the ties that bind us to the illusion that one segment of our human family can win while another loses. Together we women are contributing to a new collective wisdom and

we are lending our strength to that which we wish to embrace. From this emerging balance is being born a new dimension of our humanity. Now is the time to make a change, for ourselves and for others. Now is the time to gather. Now is the time to give what we have to other women and community and from others, learn. To learn more about Gather the Women, to join, find a circle near you or start your own circle, visit www.gatherthewomen.org Kimberly Smith is a freelance writer and novelist and has recently joined

The RAY as the managing editor. Based on the East Coast in Upstate New York, she hopes to bridge the distance between New York and California and bring women together in order to promote empowering women to be who they are and love themselves as they are.
