WELCOME

The 38th anniversary of the Scone Horse Festival takes on a new look and feel in 2018 and our vibrant new branding has been the inspiration for the Festival theme of... ‘Ignite the Fun’. The 10 day Festival officially commences from Friday May 4th with a combined Scone Horse Festival Gala Opening Night (formerly Horse Ball) which this year will be staged in the stunning function room at Scone Race Club. We will officially announce the VIP for this year’s Festival together with our Young Achiever, Themed Window Display competition and the inaugural ‘Horse of the Year’ award! One of the major changes this year is the move of the Scone Equine Hospital Festival Parade to Sunday May 6th and we trust the Scone and Upper Hunter community will continue to participate in this much loved spectacle. The Parade will be followed by the Scone Grammar School Fete which promises to showcase a vast array of wares from near and far. We are excited to have Internationally acclaimed Horseman, Entertainer and Bush Poet…Guy McLean, join us this year and he will be performing his incredible 2 hour show on Saturday 5th May. White Park will again be a hive of activity in the first weekend in May with the Australian Tentpegging Championships and NSW State titles being held for Farriers and Blacksmiths. The Jack Johnston Memorial Gala Day proudly sponsored by Regional Australia Bank and Godolphin is always a big hit with local school children with an array of country lifestyle demonstrations. Heard any good yarns lately?...then get along to the Yarns Night hosted by Scone RSL Club for some story telling and bush poetry. The Inglis Official Scone Cup Calcutta moves to Scone RSL Club this year and sets the stage for 2 fantastic days of racing at the picturesque Scone Race Club on Friday 11th and Saturday 12th May. Grab the picnic blanket, bundle the family in the car and head to Lake Glenbawn on Sunday 13th for the McDonald’s Scone Picnic by the Lake and Grand Finale Fireworks. A massive thank you to Upper Hunter Shire Council and all our valued Sponsors, Members of the Scone Horse Festival Committee, Emergency Services personnel and Volunteers for your support. 10 days of everything you can (& can’t) imagine that involves horses so come join us and ‘Ignite the Fun of the Festival’! From Manfred to Winx... M

anfred, foaled in 1922, was one of the first champions ‘raised and grazed’ on the land now farmed by Coolmore at Jerrys Plains. Manfred won the Cox Plate, Caulfield Cup, AJC Derby, VRC Derby, Champagne Stakes and Caulfield Stakes amongst a host of topclass races during his illustrious career. The precedent set by Manfred has been followed many times over the years. In recent years, the likes of Vancouver, Catchy, Pride Of Dubai, Inference, Mighty Boss, Age Of Fire and Pinot have joined our honour roll of Group One-winning graduates and in 2017 another graduate, champion racemare Winx made history by winning her third consecutive Cox Plate at Moonee Valley. It’s something to consider when attending the yearling sales.

OUR SCONE HORSE FESTIVAL JOURNEY Nearly four decades ago, four community minded, horse passionate men combined their vision to turn a major country race meet into a festival for many to visit Scone, the horse capital of Australia and experience a love of horses and all that goes with it. Jim Rodgers, Mike Pritchard, Barry Chapman & Brian Russell created the Scone Horse Festival, by adding a horse parade and forming a volunteer committee to nurture and grow the festival. Each year, the passion of horses and creating an experience for the masses, grew stronger, through the stability of the equine industry and our strong, energetic and caring community. Thirty seven years on, we are able to offer something for anyone and everyone with or without a love of horses. A festival filled with fun, unique and ‘once in a year time’ country experiences which we want to share with you. A parade of family fun at the front end of the festival with around 80 colourful entrants, flows into the Scone Grammar School fete and markets. The original race meet is now followed the next day by a family orientated race day, and combined, form the highest paying standalone country racing carnival in Australia offering $2million in prize money. Around 60 experiences over 10 days culminating with a spectacular fireworks finale at the picturesque Lake Glenbawn. Live shows from Farrier displays to Australian Tent pegging Championships, Polo, Thoroughbred Horse Awards, Stud tours to sheep dog trials and Australian Stock Horse demonstrations. Loads of exhibitions and mostly free events!

Saturday 5, 8.30am - 5pm Sunday 6, 8.30am SUNDAY: Break for parade whi

WHITE PARK SCONE

h approx 2pm

Tentpegging began as the military exercise where a group of mounted soldiers would ride through an enemy camp in a pre-dawn raid, removing the pegs, which held the tents in place, with the tips of their sharp spears. Foot soldiers could then attack the enemy as they struggled to get out from under the collapsed tents. Thus giving the practice it’s name of Tentpegging. The Australian Light Horse has been demonstrating Tentpegging at Royal Shows as far back as the 1930’s. Here at the Scone Horse Festival, we are privileged enough to watch the best Tentpegging riders from across the nation at the Australian Championships COST: FREE ENTRY CONTACT: Barry Diffin, President 0439 449 888, Kellie Mackney, Secretary 0427 662 517 www.tentpeggingaustralia.org

JACK JOHNSTON MEMORIAL GALA DAY

TUESDAY 8 MAY 8.30AM - 3PM WHITE PARK, SCONE

Utility Sheep Dog Trial, Australian Stock Horse Demonstrations, Sheep Shearing, Dog High Jump, Farrier Demonstrations And Other Attractions SPONSORED BY REGIONAL AUSTRALIA BANK & GODOLPHIN. Jack was involved in Scone Horse Week from its

inception in 1980 until Jack Johnston Testimonial year in 1994. During that time he was awarded the first Horse Week VIP honour in 1985 and again in the Testimonial Year in 1994. Jack led the parade most years during that time. Firstly on his trusty mare ‘Wynadotte’ and then on his grandson Scott’s horse ‘Shadow’. Interesting to note that these two horses only ever went to town once a year for the parade and were completely unfazed by all the movement and noise of the parade. For a couple of years Jack drove his mother’s 1905 Phaeton sulky in the parade as well. He was the driving force for many years behind the Horse Festival Gala Day with this event being held on ‘Tyrone’ for several years during the 1990’s. After Jack’s death, the Gala Day was renamed the Jack Johnston Memorial Gala Day and moved to White Park.
