THE NUMBERS

2017 saw median house prices for the greater Bunbury area generally hold steady across the board. Property valuers Herron Todd White have reported they believe the South West has passed the bottom of the market and has begun a slow recovery. It will be interesting to see how greater Bunbury specifically fares in the coming years, with plenty of development and improvements happening in the area. There is still an oversupply of property for sale, roughly double the "sweet-spot". This guaranteed the average days on market continued to soar this year, nearing 300 days. However, those who marketed their properties well, and priced them correctly, generally saw successful results.

WHAT'S HAPPENING? Implementation of the City’s CBD promotion and activation strategies are well under way with expressions of interest now open for the Bunbury Summer Jam. This is a series of street entertainment events taking place over summer on the same Saturdays as the Bunbury Markets, with the idea to help activate and add vibrancy to the CBD. In the promotional space, a TV and a social media-based campaign are being created to promote Bunbury and the CBD over summer. The TV campaign will focus on the diversity of attractions within the CBD while the social media campaign will focus on Christmas in Bunbury, including shopping and event opportunities. Both will be launched at the start of December. The City of Bunbury has received a Lighthouse Special Commendation Award for demonstrating a strong partnership with local disability employment service provider Forrest Personnel. In 2016 the City received a Lighthouse Project Grant and in consultation with Combined Team Services and Forrest Personnel, the City created and conducted organisation-wide equal employment opportunity training with a focus on access and inclusion. The Human Resources team continued their engagement with Forrest Personnel, workshopping ways to increase employment opportunities for people with disability. Ultimately the partnership resulted in the creation of four new positions for people with disability at the City.

The recent Pet Expo held in Queens Gardens was a success with rangers engaging with a wide range of two and four-legged community members. While answering many general enquiries such as the locations of dog exercise areas and rule about cats, Rangers were also able to complete the registration of 41 dogs and check a number of microchip details for pet owners. Twenty pet-related stalls were at the expo including local vets, pet suppliers and animal rescue groups. Visits from school groups are increasing at the Bunbury Museum and Heritage Centre, with four large classes in recent weeks and more booked in. The Museum is also gearing up for the Summer Schools Program with a family history research program as part of the Stirling Street Arts Centre Summer School. The City has been successful in receiving grant funding under the Stronger Communities Program, which will be used to supplement existing funds that have been allocated to upgrade lighting around the Frankel Street and Mondak Street Shops in Carey Park. Bunbury’s biggest charity event, Relay for Life, was held recently and the City’s team “Council Crew” raised $7000. Overall, the event raised $142,000.

Safehaven Studios have been awarded the tender to install a gateway public art piece at Koombana Bay. The local artists, Alex and Nicole Mickle, propose to “seek to merge traditional sculptural skill and advanced fabrication technology to create a striking contemporary artwork that pays deep respect to the oldest human culture on our planet.” The intention is to use a Noongar face. The sculpture will be about 7 metres high with gaps of 75mm. The artists have consulted with the Indigenous community and provided letters of support from Aboriginal organisations with their submission. A new path link along the south side of Adam Road from Stirton Court to an existing path located at the intersection of Adam Road and Parade Road has been built to help with the safe movement of pedestrians, particularly school children. Previously pedestrians had to cross the road twice to follow this route. An accessible ramp at Back Beach is currently under construction with the site being fenced to reduce any risk to the public. A range of earthworks, reinforcement and concrete work has already been carried out. Stairs will also be constructed to access the surf club building and dual use path, while the installation of a retaining wall and removal of sand and vegetation at the front of the toilet is scheduled to begin once the concrete ramp works are complete. Bin audits are being carried out by the City’s Waste Department with the information gathered to be relayed back to Councillors and the public. The majority of our residents are using the three bin system correctly, although single use plastic bags again are a major content error. The Bunbury Wildlife Park’s dingo pups have been de-sexed and are still on display while they are recovering. But in sad news, the tiger quoll Zeus has been put down due to his condition as he entered old age. Staff are now looking into acquiring a new tiger quoll.

The Peron Naturalist Partnership (PNP) is currently undertaking an investigation into how people in the South West value the coast. This research hasn’t been undertaken previously and is required as part of coastal hazard risk management and adaptation planning. The City’s Back Beach is one of three case study sites under the project. The project will involve a series of beach user surveys and community workshops over the next 12 months. Rangers administration has received a number of enquiries regarding the requirements for properties for the upcoming fire season. Of the calls received, most relate to the condition of properties and a concern regarding a fire hazard. Rangers respond to all of these enquires and undertake an assessment of the property and the owner of the property will be contacted and advised of the complaint.

THEY'RE TALKING ABOUT US!

When it came time to sell our house, The Agents Lloyd-Smith came highly recommended from close friends of ours and after successfully selling our property I have no hesitation in passing along that same helpful advice to any others who may be looking to sell their own property. During the process, we dealt mostly with Ben who was very professional and helpful throughout the entire experience. Communication was exceptional and always prompt and polite leading to a successful outcome. It certainly felt like our property was in good hands at every step of the way. Travis Italiano

We were fortunate enough to engage The Agents Lloyd-Smith's to assist with the selling of Mum and Dads home. The Lloyd-Smith's conveyed themselves in a very professional manner & were very easy to communicate with regarding any matter relating to the sale. We were most impressed with the professional photos & video they created to promote the house. This was a major life-changing moment for Mum & Dad who decided after 56 years of living in the same house to downsize to a more manageable unit. The Lloyd-Smith boys eased Mum & Dad throughout the whole process making it a stress-free event for them. We couldn't be happier with their service and we highly recommend The Agents Lloyd-Smith to everyone selling their home.
