Population projection for Greater Bunbury Region
Boom time! The Australian Bureau of Agriculture and Resourse Economics and Sciences (ABARES) figures released in September 2017 show that Australia’s agricultural sector was the largest contributer to National GDP in 2016-17. The gross value of farm production across the country reached a record $62.8 billion for 2016-17. The sector also grew the fastest of all 19 industries monitored, up 23 per cent with the grains and livestock industry contributing strongly to this growth. ABARES also reported that the agricultural sector contributed over $50 billion in exports in 2016-17, just under 14 per cent of total goods and service exports. Grains and livestock products each contributed $10 billion to exports. Additionally, in 201617 pulse exports to the world were worth over $3 billion, wine exports $2.4 billion, nut exports $822 million and citrus over $330 million. Almond exports were up over 50 per cent for the first half of 2017. Chickpea exports to India increased by almost 90 per cent in 2016-17 to a record value of $1.1 billion. Strong growth occurred in the export of agricultural product to China with wine achieving significant growth at a value of $596 million, a 43 per cent increase on the previous year. The outlook for the Australian agribusiness sector for 2018 appears positive. There appears to be strong appetite for investment in Australian wagriculture from both farmers and agribusinesses as well as outside investors. Increased investment appetite across the agri-sector resulted in the rise in the value of agricultural land in 2017 and this is anticipated to manifest further in 2018.
