Stars shine bright

Area high school athletes were treated as stars as they came to see a star at the second annual Best of the Record All Star Preps awards ceremony at Stockton Arena. Stockton native and Los Angeles Rams receiver Brandin Cooks was the guest speaker at the event at Stockton Arena. The Lincoln High School graduate was drafted by the New Orleans Saints in 2014, and after a 2017 trade to the New England Patriots, played in Super Bowl LII. The crowd of nearly 900 people came to hear from Cooks but also to honor the young athletes. After entering the facility, many had their pictures taken on the “green carpet.” They then entered the arena to see it transformed into a fine dining facility complete with an ice sculpture, which was a popular location for a selfie. “It’s like the BET Awards,” said Jamar Marshall of St. Mary’s, who was honored as the boys track and field winner. “It was a very good experience. I’m blessed.” Awards were given for the top athletes and teams in 28 sports in San Joaquin, Amador and Calaveras counties. The Chase Chevrolet teams of the year have one important thing in common —
the best season in the history of their respective programs. The Argonaut boys basketball team rallied the town of Jackson around their improbable and exciting season, which included a Sac-Joaquin Section Division V title and a trip to the state championship game. “It’s kind of nice to get the gang back together and have one more night to celebrate with an amazing group of guys,” Argonaut coach John Gilliam said. “I didn’t expect (the award) at all. Coming from a small school up the hill, I thought we were just coming for dinner.” The Tracy girls softball team won the Sac-Joaquin Section Division I crown this year, it was really the end of a three-year journey to the top. The Bulldogs finally beat longtime rival Sheldon for the section title in a tense three-game series. “The girls worked really hard for this,” Tracy coach Paulette Keeney said. “It shows them what a lot of hard work and dedication will do.” Gino Campiotti of Manteca High and Aquira DeCosta of St. Mary’s were selected as the Chase Chevrolet athletes of the year. Campiotti, a senior, helped to lead the Buffaloes’ football, baseball and basketball teams to the postseason. He was also named football player of the year. DeCosta also was a two-time winner,
taking the honors as the area’s top basketball player. She’s also considered one of the top prospects in the nation. DeCosta earned All-USA First Team honors by USA Today and McDonald’s All-American status. The senior, who is committed to attend Baylor, is ranked as the No. 3 player in the nation by ESPN. “It’s a huge honor to get both awards,” DeCosta said. “I’m really shocked. I just came to represent St. Mary’s. … The hard work definitely paid off.” The coach of the year awards went to Ken Green of the St. Mary’s boys basketball team and Nichole Meyer of the Ripon girls soccer team. Green, a St. Mary’s alum, has been the Rams’ head coach since 2002, and led them to one of their best seasons during his tenure. St. Mary’s won the section title for a third time under Green, won a series of exciting and close postseason games to get within a win of the state tournament game. It was the second nomination for Green. “It’s a reflection of the people you’re surrounded by,” Green said. “The talent of the players combined with the support of the coaching staff and community.” Meyer is only in her second season at Ripon, but took the Indians all the way to the Northern California Division V Regional championship contest.
“It’s a huge honor, definitely unexpected. This is a big deal,” Meyer said. Linden’s Edwin Menera was honored with the Dignity Health St. Joseph’s Medical Center Courage award. The soccer player suffered a serious heart episode four years ago and was diagnosed with atrial fibrillation. He went through ablation surgery and returned to the field. This season he had 32 goals in 24 games. “I’ve just got to thank God and the people who supported me to be here tonight,” Menera said. “There was a time when I thought I wasn’t going to make it back. My doctor helped me. He said, ‘Go out and play again.’ ” Franklin softball player Anelicia Munoz was presented with the Dignity Health St. Joseph’s Medical Center Heart and Desire award. Born without a left hand, she didn’t let it stop her from pursuing her love of sports, and is a top player for her team. The final presentation of the night was the Charles Washington award. Washington’s daughters, Cheryl and Hillary Washington, handed the trophy to St. Mary’s senior Andrew Jenkins. “It’s a huge honor,” Jenkins said. “My dad was coached by him and my grandpa was coached by him.”

ST. MARY’S basketball
Why he Won Green’s steady hand has guided his alma mater’s varsity boys basketball program since 2002, and once again he showed his mettle in the playoffs as the St. Mary’s Rams made it to the Northern California Division II finals. His long-established principles of teamwork and defense led the Rams to the third Sac-Joaquin Section title of his tenure. His teams also won in 2006 and 2011.

ERIC REIS
RIPON CHRISTIAN BASEBALL
MANTECA FOOTBALL
A veteran coach with an eye for good talent, De Visser has consistently fielded quality teams during his years as the Ripon Christian baseball coach. Everything came together in 2018 as he led the team to the first Sac-Joaquin Section title in school history. De Visser had just two seniors on the squad, but taught the team how to play at the high school level and how to win as they won the Southern Athletic League championship on their way to the Division VI title.
Considered one of the finest high school football coaches in the state, Reis ended his 16-year stint at Manteca with another Sac-Joaquin Section crown and a trip in the Northern California playoffs. Reis compiled 150 wins, five section titles and three NorCal bowl appearances. His final season was typical of his success, as the Buffaloes went 12-3, took home the Division III section banner and advanced to the regional finals. He is the first Manteca grad to coach the Buffaloes.
JON GILLIAM
ARGONAUT basketball His second season as Argonaut’s basketball coach was a spectacular journey through the state’s Division X playoffs. The ride ended a game short of the state title, but Gilliam pushed the right buttons all season as the Mustangs captured the section and Northern California titles. He grew up loving the game in Hoopa, a rural town of about 3,000 people inside the Hoopa Valley Indian Reservation.

Why She Won In her second season with the Ripon girls soccer team, Meyer led a talented young group on a lengthy postseason run. After a first-round playoff exit the year before, Meyer coached her team to a 1-0 overtime victory in the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Division V championship, then didn’t stop there. Before it was all said and done, Meyer’s team had reached the Northern California Division V Regional Championship.

GIRLS SPORT Coach of the year Finalists
George Bozovich Tokay wrestling
It may have been a “down year” compared to the previous two, but Bozovich’s Tokay girls wrestling team sent four wrestlers to state this season, and finished just shy of a third consecutive Sac-Joaquin Section North Girls Masters title. This time, Bozovich’s Tigers took a close second, with Jazmin Ruiz leading the way to state. Ruiz’ sophomore sister, Yesenia Ruiz, and teammates Jessica Gutierrez and Cassidy Curtiss were also among the group that Bozovich took to state.
Paulette Keeney TRACY SOFTBALL
Keeney, in her third season coaching the Tracy softball team, led the Bulldogs over the hump. Tracy went undefeated in Tri-City Athletic League play and made the Division I Section Championship for the third straight year. Having lost to Sheldon in each of the previous two championship games, Tracy beat Sheldon twice in what essentially turned out to be a three-game series between the semifinals and championship to bring home the section title.
Anthony Matthews BEAR CREEK basketball
At the helm of a girls basketball team featuring freshman phenom Mya Blake, the second-year coach picked up where he left off after going 24-6 in his first run with the Bruins. Bear Creek went 28-4 this season, including 10-0 in the San Joaquin Athletic Association, and played for a Division II section championship. Bear Creek also earned a berth in the state championship tournament.

Edwin Menera LINDEN High School
Why he Won On March 3, 2014, Edwin Menera played an indoor soccer game, recording an assist on his team’s first goal of the match. After fighting for possession of the ball, Menera suddenly collapsed on the field, and was rushed to the San Joaquin General Hospital. Nearly four years later, Menera, 17, was a junior at Linden High School, scoring 32 goals in 24 games this past season for the Lions. And he’s done so after the discovery of an atrial fibrillation in his heart. The condition is an irregular heartbeat caused by an electrical misfire of the atriums of the heart. Menera had an ablation surgery with the hopes of returning to the soccer field. Menera can no longer have things high in caffeine, and he sees a doctor every 18 months for a check-up on his heart. But he’s been able to return to the soccer field, and continue to play the sport he loves. Menera acknowledged he still thinks about what happened, and he regards it as the worst experience of his life. He knows the chance, while less likely, is still there every time he steps on the field. “I don’t like to go back to that place, but it’s always on my mind,” Menera said. “Before games, I pray it doesn’t happen to me, and I just keep on being the same person I was before.”

Anelicia Munoz FRANKLIN High School
Why She Won Anelicia Munoz has never been one to let something hold her back. Born without a left hand, Munoz taught herself how to tie her shoes, braid her hair and, after watching her old siblings, play softball. Munoz participated in cheer as early as three years old, and followed her older sisters into softball. She quickly took to the sport and, as she competed in travel ball leagues, was able to develop a lightning quick glove transfer as well as a smooth swing from the left side of the plate. As a junior this season, Munoz played outfield for the Franklin High softball team, and her .385 on-base percentage helped the Yellowjackets go 15-6 overall and 13-2 in the San Joaquin Athletic Association. Over the years, nothing has gotten in the way of Munoz’s drive to compete and succeed in the sport of softball. This season, she showed exactly that at the varsity level for Franklin.

In what was essentially her second year as a wrestler, Urrea certainly left her mark on the sport. The Lincoln wrestler qualified for the CIF State Wrestling Championships, quite the accomplishment on its own. Then, she won four times in the state tournament - three by pin - to win the state championship in the 106-pound weight class.
The Bulldogs senior hit .564 in 29 games for the Tracy softball team, pairing that with a Tri-City Athletic League-leading nine home runs and 41 RBI and a .963 fielding percentage at shortstop. Cid helped Tracy return to the Division I championship round and hit a pair of home runs in the title game, the second of which was a two-run shot to tie the game at 5-5 and eventually send things to extra innings.
Lindsey Wallsjasper
SIERRA SOFTBALL, VOLLEYBALL Walljasper was a three-sport start during her time at Sierra. The 2017-18 season was one for the ages for the Ripon High girls soccer team. It went 18-5-2 in the regular season, then embarked on an incredible postseason run that included a 1-0 overtime win over Hilmar in the Division V section finals and concluded in an overtime loss in the Division IV Northern California final. Freshmen teammates Devaney Dougherty and Ariana Scholten led Ripon, with Dougherty contributing 16 goals and nine assists and Scholten adding 17 of both.
Armed with three Division-I bound senior captains, it was business as usual for the Rams. With Aquira DeCosta (18.3 points per game), Ariel Johnson (14.1) and Neenah Young (14.0) leading the way, St. Mary’s went 27-3 overall and won its 11th straight Division I section title over second-ranked Folsom. The Rams earned the No. 2 seed in the Open Division state playoffs, and beat No. 7 Cardinal Newman to make the Regional Semifinals.
I am just so proud of them, so honored. I’m so glad we’re here. The girls worked really hard for this. It shows them what a lot of hard work and dedication will do.
SIERRA Softball Three out of four is a pretty good ratio to shoot for, especially in the context of section titles. Sierra went 19-4 overall and 13-1 in the Valley Oak League, setting the stage for an impressive postseason run that culminated in the Timberwolves’ third Division IV championship in the past four years. Senior standout Lindsey Walljasper led Sierra both offensively and in the pitcher’s circle, hitting at a .519 clip and posting an earned run average of 0.90. She also hit six home runs for the Timberwolves, with sophomore Samantha Lorge adding additional punch with five long balls of her own.

The Knights didn’t look like a typical section title contender at the start of the season. Armed with just two seniors and a bunch of talented but inexperienced underclassmen, they won the Southern Athletic League and rose from the fourth seed to the Sac-Joaquin Division VI title. The Knights had been close before, but finally brought home the section banner.
Manteca Football The Buffaloes stampeded the competition once again, putting together another sterling season and the last under longtime head coach Eric Reis. After losing two of its first three games, Manteca rolled behind quarterback Gino Campiotti and won 11 in a row, including a victory against Valley Oak League rival to secure its second consecutive Division III section crown. The Buffs were knocked out in the NorCal playoffs shy of the bowl game.
