t’s heard everywhere from little league to high school to college to the pros. Being the best, number one, also drives businesses to go the extra distance in offering products and service beyond customers’ expectations. This section is about Lodi businesses that were voted by The Record’s readers as the best in their respective categories. Also listed in the categories are businesses that are considered by you to be “One of the Best.” While strictly speaking there can only be one “Best” in each category, those who are “One of the Best” have much to be proud of as well. In many cases, there were few votes between first and second. Businesses who got any votes in the Best of Lodi Readers Poll should take pride that some of their customers took the time and made the effort to cast a vote for them. Readers registered and completed an online ballot. That takes loyalty and customers who appreciate the daily effort these businesses make to serve them. At the top of each category is the business that garnered the most votes. Listed below in order of votes received are the next one or two businesses that also received significant votes in the category. We thank all the readers who took the time to support their favorite businesses by filling out a ballot. Five readers’ ballots were drawn at random and they received $100 gift certificates. They are: Michael Garcia of Ripon, Estela Woods of Lodi, Christina Bookman of Acampo, Toni Taboada of Lodi, and Brenda Murray of Lodi. This non-scientific poll was conducted online at www.recordnet.com/bestoflodi between February 18th and March 2nd, 2010 among San Joaquin readers. Questions about Best of Lodi should be directed to the Advertising Department at The Record 209-546-8351. ■

In 1950, when Charlie Clark founded his pest control business in Stockton, he didn’t have a vision of becoming the biggest in the field, just the best. Today, the company he founded, which has grown to 20 branches around California and one in Reno, is headquartered right here in Lodi for over a quarter century, and Clark Pest Control is a proud member of the Lodi business community. veryone is welcome at Rosewood… whether you’re just dropping by for an inspired cocktail, a glass of local wine or a fullon award-winning culinary creation. The moment that you walk in the door, whether you are in a tuxedo or t-shirt and jeans, you will feel welcome and comfortable. Scott McLeod, the general manager says, “We just want you here with us to enjoy!” The patio is a perfect place to sit and sip during the upcoming spring and warm summer nights. The mellow mixture of rich burgundy, elegant dark wood and the tastefully subdued modern element of the semi-exposed kitchen provide an alluring ambience inside as well. The soft lighting provides a relaxed comfortable atmosphere with large windows that open to the historic views of downtown Lodi. The menu changes with the seasons, offering local delicacies at the peak of their freshness. From appetizers to entrees, the selections are imaginative and they use as much as 80% of their produce from within 15 miles of Lodi. Seafood is obtained from

the California coast. Rosewood also boasts a trio of pizzas served piping hot from their cherry wood fired oven and vibrant fresh salads are plentiful on the menu. From bubbles to burgundy, their wine list provides a versatile multi dimensional selection to pair with your choice of food. The staff has a strong sense of community, sharing a long time affiliation with Wine & Roses in Lodi – one of the highest rated resorts in California. They feature many wine selections from local wineries and do not charge a corkage fee for Lodi wines. You can find them on rosewoodbarandgrill.com, Facebook and Twitter. n

ntering its 5th year as Lodi’s premier consignment store, it’s a popular destination and its artfully decorated storefront belies the vast square footage full of consigned furniture and other items. Haley Jackson, owner of New & Again states, “It’s a revolving door of inventory. Some of our customers come in every week just to see what’s new.” What she doesn’t mention is that the items for sale are extraordinarily clean, in good condition and well-organized, making for a shopping experience as pleasant as any, especially considering the alluring prices. Their simple 50/50 split of the sales price with the consignors, makes for a stress free, or as they call it, “no fuss no muss” arrangement. Jackson with her interior design passion, and her father, Alan Levy, with his lifelong love of antiques, auctions, research and entrepreneurship, combined their unique talents and abilities to bring a much needed store of this kind to Lodi. They also conduct estate sales, ensuring that sellers receive top dollar for all goods to be sold. Using their experience and recordkeeping system, satisfied consignors of this service rave about the service level and efficient methods employed to liquidate estates. Their website, NewandAgainOnline. com, features easy-to-sign-up-for newsletters, merchandise photos, and

clear explanations of how the business works. After 90 days, if items are not sold or removed from the store by the consignor, they are sent to their warehouse, discounted generously and on the first weekend of every month, the warehouse opens for a furniturepalooza-type blowout sale. This event is key to making room for more incoming merchandise and is enthusiastically attended by the public. “It’s a team effort,” says Jackson, crediting her devoted staff for the work they do and the all-around success of the business. n

orn of two converging dreams, he wanted a winery and she wanted a bakery, the dream became more than they imagined. This May they will be celebrating their two year anniversary. Located in the heart of downtown Lodi on beautiful School Street, The Dancing Fox has now become a favorite stopping place for locals wanting a simple coffee with pastry, to those seeking a wine tasting experience in a unique wine bar or to those wanting a gourmet lunch or dinner. At the heart of the bakery is the famous wood fired brick oven from Spain. The breads and pizza baked in this oven have a unique crust and flavor. Most of the organic flour used is ground daily using their own stone mill. The large assortments of wines are handcrafted onsite from grapes grown at the Lewis family vineyards. With their three sons helping in all areas this family is certainly pursuing their passion and dreams. n

ngelo’s Mexican restaurant is a family-owned business and a proud member of the downtown community. Rachel and David Paler have been serving Mexican-American food for over 16 years from recipes handed down from Rachel’s mother, Teresa Mercado. David describes their MexicanAmerican fare as food you will crave again and again. Located in the heart of downtown Lodi, you can choose to dine in the large dining room, have a drink at the bar or enjoy the beautiful patio. Sit back and relax for breakfast, lunch,

or dinner. Breakfast features traditional American fare like pancakes and omelets as well as Mexican favorites like chorizo and eggs, huevos rancheros, or a giant breakfast burrito. For lunch or dinner, try out one of Mr. Angelo’s Specials like chicken fajitas, carne asada, camerones rancheros or any burrito made to order. We take pride in being your favorite Mexican restaurant. Thank you for voting us “Best of Lodi,” and continuing to support us throughout these tough times. n

We also improved our website by installing a shopping cart that makes ordering wine more user friendly. Our tasting room has also seen a rise in our number of visitors, in part, we believe, because Lodi is now known as a premier region for winemaking. We look forward to seeing all of our patrons through the year and hope we are giving you the best possible experience at Van Ruiten. n 2010, Van Ruiten Winery saw tremendous growth in markets across the United States, expansion, wine club memberships, new winemaking equipment, and tasting room enhancements. Also in 2010, also saw the addition of our new warehouse which greatly improves our ability for quality control and shipping. Much to our delight, our wine club showed a remarkable increase in memberships, especially in these tough economic times. Our winemaker purchased a new Destemmer which improves the quality of the fruit that goes into making our wines by allowing a gentler handling process and he continues to buy more barrels for our expanding

rime rib, scampi, meatloaf sliders and our new baby back ribs! Those are just a few items that have our guests talking about the new menu and energy at Woodbridge Crossing. Our soups and sauces are made from scratch and you will taste the difference. http://www.woodbridgecrossing. net/woodbridge-crossing-menus. html Welcome to your new favorite, newly remodeled restaurant in Woodbridge, California, where we’ll be providing you with the freshest, most appetizing menu of delectable daily specials to be found. Woodbridge Crossing restaurant began in 1983 as the Woodridge Feed and Fuel nestled in the midst of downtown Woodbridge. As the new proprietor, Steve Ding has put together a team that is sure to please. He has combined the talents of some seasoned Woodbridge staff the locals

have grown accustomed to with some new talent that is cooking up a storm. The 1800s décor of Remingtons, antiques, and art work still adorns the walls. John Wayne is alive and well here at the crossing. Our award-winning Sunday Brunch is sure to please as well as the best Bloody Mary in San Joaquin County. (Yep, we won that award last month, too!) We are a destination for all of our regulars and people just stopping through the Woodbridge area. The Crossing is a local favorite and offers the area’s most popular live cover bands every weekend (and yes, we were voted Best Live Music venue in the county). With plenty of dancing room, a large selection of beer, cocktails and local wines, it’s hard not to have a great time! Our mission is your satisfaction. Come for the food, stay for the relaxing ambiance. We’re famous for serving up the best of both! n
