Supporting the Businesses That Support Our Community Those of us that live here know that San Joaquin County is a great place to live, work, play, get an education, raise a family, and thrive. We have outstanding local businesses that help support our community, and it is important, now more than ever, that we return that favor by supporting local business. Did you know that when you shop with local merchants, more of your money stays close to home, supporting the parks, recreation centers, libraries and other things that make this community a great place to live? When you support local non-profits instead of sending your charitable dollars to larger national groups, you make a difference far greater than you can imagine. You help local families get back on their feet so they can start earning money that will eventually cycle back into our own local economy. It takes a community effort to keep a community thriving, and it starts with local business. Community Spotlight invites you to take a look at some of the local businesses making a difference in San Joaquin County.

Dameron gift shop located in the mail lobby at 525 West Acacia Street
Today, under the leadership of C.E.O. Lorraine P. Auerbach, Dameron Hospital is Stockton’s third-largest private employer, offering local residents the highest level of medical care. Located in the same general area where it was originally founded, the Dameron Hospital campus now includes several surrounding blocks and medical buildings. HealthGrades, the leading national hospital ranking service, gave Dameron Hospital a “Five-Star Rating” in the Stockton region for joint replacement surgery, placing Dameron in the top 10% of hospitals nationwide for clinical performance in this area. Such distinction points to Dameron Hospital’s position as the county’s leading orthopedic hospital. The San Joaquin County Emergency Medical Services Agency has named Dameron Hospital as a designated STEMI (cardiac emergency) receiving center for San Joaquin County. Through Dameron Hospital’s LifeLine Technology and their in-house cardiac-prepared ER staff, emergency response teams now automatically take patients suffering a STEMI to Dameron. Dameron Hospital has an active cardiac catheterization lab, and is a certified cardiac care and surgery center. New services include the
Specialty coffee shop located in the Linacia Medical Building, just outside the Linacia Pharmacy
Dameron Hospital Surgical Weight Loss Center, which was introduced last fall to serve residents of San Joaquin County in this highly specialized segment of care. Over the past decade, Dameron Hospital has made a concerted effort to upgrade its medical technology, equipment, facilities and its professional staff. Dameron Hospital’s commitment to medical technological upgrades and medical services continue in 2013 with
the modernization of numerous hospital departments. As a community-owned hospital, Dameron’s entire focus is on the residents of San Joaquin County. The hospital’s goal is to be the hospital in this community that physicians prefer, patients request, and where professional medical personnel choose to work. ■

Habitat for Humanity served a record 94,618 families in fiscal year 2012
H
abitat for Humanity served a record 94,618 families nationwide through new home construction, rehabilitation and repairs in fiscal year 2012 (July 1, 2011 to July 1, 2012) breaking previous fiscal years’ records by more than 13,000 families. This equates to a family improving their living conditions on average every five and a half minutes in one of the nearly 80 countries around the world where Habitat works. Habitat for Humanity of San Joaquin County contributed to this global effort to serve even more families in need of decent, affordable housing, locally. Since its founding in 1993, Habitat for Humanity of San Joaquin County has helped over 20 families achieve better living conditions through home ownership. Habitat for Humanity of San Joaquin County is on its largest building campaign ever. Habitat currently has two project sites, with dreams and plans to build and complete homes on nearly 30 lots. The Dream Creek project includes 19 lots. Two of the homes have been completed and are occupied by partner families. Three additional homes are scheduled to be completed in the next 60 days, and five more lots are expected to break ground shortly. The Alvarado Project includes 10 lots with an anticipation to
begin construction within the year. Partner families are required to put in 500 hours of “sweat equity” as part of their down payment, and then purchase the home through Habitat at zero percent interest. Habitat is not a hand-out, but a helping hand up.
Families interested in becoming partner families can get more information on our website, www.sjchabitat.org. Each home is constructed by a combination of volunteers, partner families and a small construction staff, all overseen by a general contractor. Habitat’s continued success in funding and completing these projects is dependent upon continuing donations (materials and funds), volunteers (hundreds of hours of volunteer service) , fundraising, and corporate sponsorships. PG&E employees joined forces with Habitat and other volunteers – including soon-to-be homeowners – to help build new homes here in San Joaquin County. Over the past two years PG&E has presented our local Habitat with grants to cover the costs of installing
solar electric systems on several Habitat homes. This donation is just part of how PG&E is involved and has committed to Habitat as part of PG&E’s Solar Habitat program. “Habitat for Humanity of San Joaquin County is pleased to be part of this effort around the world that is helping to improve communities,” and volunteers, we will continue to said John Shores, Board President. “With address affordable housing needs in San continued support from our sponsors Joaquin County.” n

Habitat for Humanity of San Joaquin County announces new location for its ReStore
H
aving outgrown its current location, Habitat for Humanity of San Joaquin County has announced it will soon be moving the ReStore operation and offices to 4933 West Lane (home of the former West Lane Furniture). The new location will feature almost twice the selling space, a large warehouse and prep space, and adequate parking. The ReStore sells a combination of new and gently used construction materials, to include but not limited to plumbing, electrical, doors, windows, cabinets, paint, and hardware among a
variety of items donated from remodels and local companies. The ReStore also features a growing selection of furniture and home décor items. The majority of the items donated are received from families, contractors, and a strong partnership with local home improvement companies, who donate overstock items, slightly blemished or cancelled special orders. Habitat does not accept open chemicals, used paint products, damaged, inoperable or extremely outdated appliances. “You never know what you’re going to find. It’s a constant treasure hunt,”
said board member Tom Boogusch. Avid shoppers return once a week looking for something new that has been donated since their last visit. Inventory changes daily, and people are always looking for a good deal. The ReStore may have just what you are looking for. In order to fill their new space, Habitat has embarked on an aggressive donation campaign. They are seeking new and gently used materials to use as the prep for the relocation grand opening. If you are planning to remodel, give Habitat a call to collect your old cabinetry, sinks, toilets, light fixtures, working appliances, etc. Habitat will arrange to pick up the items and also offers a deconstruction service to remove the items for you. The ReStore takes pride in going green and helping to keep as much out of the landfills as possible to benefit the environment. Whether it’s a remodel, home improvement, time to clean out the garage, or leftovers from a yard or estate sale, keep the Habitat ReStore in mind. We will arrange a pick-up at
your convenience. All items donated to Habitat are tax deductible, and you will receive a receipt for your tax return. Proceeds from sales at the ReStores provide Habitat with needed funds to continue the mission for our building campaign here in San Joaquin County. Habitat currently has two projects underway to provide homes for nearly 30 families. Habitat is thankful for the continuing support of donations, volunteers, materials, fundraising, and affiliate/corporate sponsorships. If you have items to donate, hours are Tuesday through Friday from 10 to 6, and Saturdays 9 to 5. The ReStore is currently located at 1038 W. Fremont Street in Stockton. To make arrangements for items to be picked up, please contact Jennifer at (209) 463-1043. n

or those of you who don’t know me yet, let me tell you my story… When I was living in Aptos by the beach, I was a fitness trainer. I was running from the beach up to the redwoods (about 12 miles round-trip) 5-6 days a week. Needless to say, I was very fit and healthy. Shortly before I moved to Lodi, I developed a severe sore throat. It just wouldn’t go away. It was so severe that I often was only able to swallow liquids for days at a
time. Multiple visits to the doctor ended in prescriptions and recommendations for a tonsillectomy and possibly more surgery. I was told that surgery was the only option. I decided against surgery – I just couldn’t figure out how such a healthy guy (25 years old) couldn’t get rid of this now severe condition. But there’s more… I moved back to Lodi and met a girl who convinced me to give her doctor a try. The doctor gave me an exam, took some x-rays of my neck (the only thing the others didn’t do) and then adjusted my neck. It felt good. Three weeks later my sore throat was gone. I’ve never had it since. The experience changed my life. I decided that I had to find out more about this stuff, so I decided to go to chiropractic school myself. That was 30 years ago… Oh, by the way… I married that girl… My assistants Shelly and Robin are warm and caring people who work with me, and will make you feel right at home.
