GREAT BIG BOOK OF SAVINGS

GREAT BIG BOOK OF SAVINGS

Doug Wilhoit

Executive Director Stockton Chamber of Commerce From all of us at your 116-year-old Greater Stockton Chamber of Commerce, we wish you a very Happy Thanksgiving Holiday, and we are all so thankful for so many wonderful things that surround all of us. With Thanksgiving brings the annual nationwide Black Friday, but more importantly, the onslaught of shoppers in the local Stockton and San Joaquin businesses who serve us throughout the year so well. Your Chamber members, staff and all businesses hope all of you are ready to locally “shop until you drop!” We think it is interesting to remind all of us the origins of this annual day of “excitement!” According to University of California, Berkeley economist/historian Martha Olney, President Franklin Roosevelt (note: Diane, Bakul, Judith, Gary, Rick and Doug D. et al, I did not know him), as one of his plans to help the economy during the Great Depression, moved Thanksgiving from the last Thursday of November to the fourth Thursday of November so as to make the Christmas shopping season one week longer. He hoped to turn those business balance sheets into a positive black color (black ink) instead of the red negative color (red ink). Since then, the day after Thanksgiving has become a tradition full of good deals, and in 1966 the Philadelphia Police Department coined the phrase used today, because people were so eager for deals that they swarmed the shopping centers in such numbers that the results were traffic accidents and other unfortunate altercations amongst the crowds. When you shop on this busy and challenging day it is recommended that you plan on where to go and what you want to buy. Try making a list of 1 to 2 items per person, and what you may want for yourself. This hint helps you keep your head clear in the shopping frenzy. It is also very important that every one of you who is going to be part of the annual “tradition” do so locally! We cannot fathom going out of town or to the Internet when close to 100% of what you want or others desire is found right here at home. These items are carried by local shops and stores which are owned and staffed by your neighbors, friends, and even members of your own families. Just a reminder that this exciting and successful day of shopping should be carried on all year long, to not only make shopping convenient for each of you, but also help the local business community of our city and county to continue to provide services and employment long after the Christmas/Holiday shopping season is over. Please remember the revenue from all sales – not only at this time but also all year long – helps both the local business community, and also helps fund much-needed community services for all. Have a wonderful Christmas and Holiday Season and remember: Please keep it local by “Shopping Stockton and San Joaquin first and always!”
