A healthy, secure, safe and welcoming

San Joaquin County healthCare Guide

HOME Story provided by

Sutter Health

You want your home to be all these things. But could your household be harboring hidden health and safety risks? Here’s a guide to spotting and eliminating some common health and safety hazards in your home.

San Joaquin County healthcare Guide

If allergies or asthma runs in your family, you may believe that staying indoors will keep you breathing easier. But allergens that trigger sneezing, wheezing and coughing are often found throughout a home, says Ronald Brown, M.D., a board-certified allergy and immunology specialist with Solano Regional Medical Group, part of the Sutter Health network. “A good place to start allergy-proofing is the bedroom, because that is where you spend the most hours,” he advises. “To prevent allergy or asthma flareups from disrupting your sleep, two basic steps are shutting bedroom windows at night and keeping pets out of the room.” He adds, “A nosmoking-inside-the-house rule will keep your home’s air free of irritating secondhand smoke.” It also pays to take control of house dust mites – microscopic

creatures that feed on flakes of skin and other small particles in the home. Droppings from these mites are the most common trigger of allergies and asthma. To minimize mites: • Replace carpeting with vinyl, tile or hardwood flooring. • Use a dehumidifier to keep indoor humidity below 50 percent. • Wash bedding in hot water once a week. • Seal pillows and mattresses in allergen-proof fabric covers.

Vanquishing Home Viruses You keep your house tidy, but it’s tough to clean what you can’t see: invisible viruses that cause the flu or common cold. When germy fingers touch a household surface, the virus-causing bugs can transfer there and linger. Objects frequently handled by family members – such as

telephones, doorknobs, the TV remote or the keyboard for a shared computer – are often-overlooked viral “hot spots.”

To help prevent the spread of viruses in your home: • Wash hands often – especially before eating, after using the bathroom, and before and after cooking. A thorough wash takes at least 15 seconds of rubbing hands together with soap and water. A paper towel is best for drying. • Clean household surfaces often with disinfectant spray or antibacterial wipes. • Keep hands away from your eyes, mouth and nose. These are key body entry points for a virus.

Securing Safety Alarms If a hazardous situation arises in your home, you want to be alerted immediately. Every household

needs smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors. Carbon monoxide is a poisonous gas produced by heating or cooking appliances that run on oil, gas, coal, wood or propane. Because it is odorless and invisible, carbon monoxide is difficult to detect without a safety alarm. • If you have fuel-burning appliances or equipment and/or an attached garage, install at least one carbon monoxide detector, preferably in a hallway outside bedrooms. Have your heating system, fireplace and chimney inspected yearly by a qualified technician. • Place a smoke detector on each level of your home and outside each bedroom. Change batteries once a year, and test alarms monthly. Keep a fire extinguisher on every floor of your home, and train family members to use it.

Reduce your risk of

stroke Story provided by

Sutter Tracy Community Hospital

It’s alarming but true: more women are aware of the risk factors and warning signs of breast cancer than those of stroke, but stroke kills twice as many women every year. Stroke is also the third leading cause of death in the U.S., and the leading cause of adult disabilities and nursing home admissions. Fortunately, up to 80 percent of strokes may be prevented by identifying your risk factors and making smart lifestyle choices.

What’s your risk? While stroke affects more men than women, it kills more women than men. “Some people assume that stroke is a man’s disease, but that’s not the case,” points out Laura Cook, MA, Speech-Language Pathologist at Sutter Tracy Community Hospital (STCH). “Women should be aware that a stroke could happen to them, too.” As the facilitator of the Stroke Club, a free community service provided by STCH for stroke survivors, stroke prevention is Cook’s primary focus. “The Stroke Club supports families and caregivers with information and coping strategies,” Cook explains. “We also offer help for continued improvement, even many years after a stroke.” The Stroke Club meets on the third Thursday of every month from 3-5 p.m., and is also open to survivors

San Joaquin County healthCare Guide of other neurological diseases such as Parkinson’s Disease, ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease) and head injuries. For information call (209) 830-2137. Cook notes that women have unique risk factors for stroke. High blood pressure (hypertension) is the most common cause of stroke, and affects almost 29 million women in the U.S. Hypertension is more common in African American women and women over 55. Your risk increases if you also take birth control pills, are pregnant or have a family history of high blood pressure, particularly if you smoke. Diabetes strikes twice as many women over age 45 compared to men. Migraine headaches affect more American women than men, and women who have migraines are three to six times more likely to suffer strokes. If you smoke, have a

|7

history of migraines and take oral contraceptives, you may be increasing your risk of stroke by as much as 34 times. Pregnancy can increase a woman’s risk of stroke, especially during the months following delivery when natural changes in the body include elevated blood pressure, increased production of blood clotting factors, significant blood loss from delivery, increased stress on the heart and additional blood volume. Oral contraceptives, including low-estrogen birth control pills, may double your risk of strokes, and risk increases with additional factors. Hormone replacement therapy involving progestin and estrogen for post-menopausal women may prevent injuries such as hip fractures, but it increases the risk of stroke. Thick waist and triglycerides also increase your risk. Women who

have waist measurements larger than 35.2 inches and triglyceride (blood fat) levels greater than 128 milligrams per liter may be five times more likely to have strokes. Heredity and lifestyle factors including an unhealthy diet, physical inactivity, being overweight, and smoking (particularly while taking oral contraceptives) can increase a woman’s risk of stroke. If a relative in your immediate family has suffered a stroke, your risk doubles. “Women are often the primary caregivers or helpers in a family,” Cook adds. “They often neglect their own problems, and ignore warning signs or contributing factors that cause strokes.”

What can you do? “Know the controllable and uncontrollable factors that may cause strokes,” Cook advises. Additionally, she recommends:

Talk to your doctor about your risk factors and how to reduce them. Know your blood pressure, have it checked annually and take steps to lower it if you’re diagnosed with hypertension. High blood pressure is defined as 140/90 or higher; 120/80 or higher is considered pre-hypertension. Know your cholesterol and take steps to reduce it if your combined LDL and HDL numbers exceed 200. If you smoke, quit. If you drink alcohol, do so in moderation. Find out if you have atrial fibrillation (a form of irregular heartbeat), diabetes, circulation problems or clotting disorders, and if you do, work with your physician to manage these issues. Exercise regularly. Eat healthfully and reduce your intake of fats and sodium.

Why you need

prenatal

care

Story provided by Sutter Health

You need to take care of yourself for a new reason. Your health can affect your baby’s growth. You may have mixed feelings. A motherly instinct may be stirring within you. Or, you may feel like you don’t know where or how to start. One thing is sure. No matter how much attention you paid to your health in the past, you need to focus on it more now. Start by learning more about what is going on inside you, as you nourish this new life. Prenatal care helps you have a healthy baby. • Your healthcare provider assesses the health of your pregnancy. A “due date” is figured. • The progress of your pregnancy is checked. This includes your baby’s growth, changes in your weight, and your overall health and comfort. • Your healthcare provider will watch for any concerns, and manage existing ones before problems occur.

You’re Part of a Team When you’re pregnant, you’re part of a team that includes you, your baby, and your healthcare provider. Your team may also include a partner or a main support person. He or she could be a loved one, such

as a spouse, a family member, or a friend. As you work toward giving your baby a healthy start, rely on your team members for support.

It’s Not Too Late to Start Good Habits What matters most is protecting your baby from this moment on. If you smoke, drink alcohol, or use drugs, now is the time to stop. If you need help, talk with your healthcare provider. • Smoking increases the risk of losing your baby or having a low-birth-weight baby. If you smoke, quit now. • Alcohol and drugs have been linked with miscarriage, birth defects, mental retardation, and low birth weight. Avoid alcohol and drugs.

Make Room on Your Plate

Save time

With these impressive health credentials, why are fruits and vegetables so often absent from our plates? Taste and time are two main reasons, says clinical dietitian Susan Zipin. “Many people consider the taste of vegetables bland or unpleasant. And many of us no longer invest the time to cook from scratch,” she says. To overcome these barriers, try these tips:

Buy precut, prewashed and bagged vegetables and fruits. Many frozen vegetables can be microwaved and on the table in minutes. Try prewashed, bagged salad mixes.

Add flavor For strong-flavored veggies such as broccoli or cauliflower, mellow the taste by microwaving or steaming and then adding a tasty low-fat cheese sauce, salad dressing or dipping sauce.

Mix with favorite foods If you usually have eggs in the morning, mix in mushrooms, tomatoes or spinach. Top cereal or yogurt with berries or bananas. Add slices of cucumber, tomato or romaine lettuce to a sandwich. Drink a glass of 100 percent juice and add a small salad to your dinner. Once you get in the fruit and veggie habit, you’ll wonder how you ever managed without their hunger-satisfying freshness.

More Matters, No Matter How You Slice It There’s a new government-sponsored campaign urging Americans to eat their veggies! It’s called “Fruits & Veggies: More Matters.” On average, Americans consume only about three servings of fruit and vegetables a day – which is less than ideal for optimum health. “The focus of ‘More Matters’ is to get people to ask, ‘How can I take small steps to add more fruits and vegetables to my diet?’” says Zipin. “It’s a reminder that adding any amount of fruits and vegetables is important.”

At Last! An Amazing Breakthrough in Back and Neck Pain Relief Without Any Drugs, Risky Surgery, Epidural or Cortisone Shots! Learn How Hundreds of Residents Found Natural Relief From Their Back and Neck Pain

Those with chronic back and neck pain may now breathe a sigh of relief thanks to Dr. Dinh V. Le, D.C. and his new FDA Cleared non-surgical technology. The DRX9000 spinal decompression system was developed by a team of back specialist and engineers. Unlike other types of treatment, spinal decompression repositions the disc and repairs the disc structure. These dramatic improvements are seen on before and after MRI studies. “It’s like a modern miracle,” says PGA golf professional Frank Nobilo, “I was in agony. I can actually have a normal life that I never thought was possible.” “Spinal decompression is a major advancement in the treatment of back and neck pain because it is the only non-surgical disc treatment proven to have lasting results,” says Dr. Le, who has four spinal decompression machines in his Stockton Office. “After getting our first machine, in October 2005, we have not been able to keep up with the demand therefore we currently have four decompression machines and getting our fifth very soon,” says Dr. Le. “Since I began using this technology, I have helped patients with chronic pain who thought there was no hope some even had prior surgery,” says Dr. Le. “Research has shown that in a clinical study, 89% of patients treated with spinal decompression were effectively corrected.” Treatment for the patient is extremely comfortable and most patients fall asleep during their 20-30 minute treatment session. In many cases the pain resolves after the first few minutes of being on the machine. “Most patients I see have tried everything from shots and medication to surgery. Thanks to this technology, I am able to help patients quickly without any risks or com-

plications,” explained Dr. Le. Call now to discover if you qualify for this amazing treatment. With your free consultation you will receive: • An analysis of your X-rays and spinal exam results so we can see if Spinal Decompression Therapy can be done to help relieve your problem. • Helpful literature that shows how your body works and why you experience pain. • Answers to all your most probing questions about the DRX9000 Spinal Decompression Therapy and what it can do for you.

“She is completely free of pain” My wife has been suffering from severe back pain for several weeks. She could hardly walk and she was in constant pain. She saw Dr. Le’s ad in the paper and we went to see if he could help her condition. He put her on the DRX program and also supplied her with a belt to wear. She completed the series of treatments and now she is completely free of pain. Dr. Le’s program has been a Godsend to her. She’s like her young self again. We would recommend this program to anyone who suffers from back pain. — William & Edna Ente, Stockton, CA

“Now I feel like a new person” “After the DRX9000 treatment I can now get out of bed & not have to scamper for a pain pill. I have had lower back pain for 20 years and now I feel like a new person. Thank you, Dr. Le!” — Helen Schneider, Lodi, CA

The appointment will not take long at all. But, due to the demand and high touch personal care we deliver… we only have 17 openings at this time. The openings are filled first come-first served. Once they’re gone, they’re gone.

The Right Time and Resources for Nursing Home Care Article provided by Golden Living Centers

Life is full of difficult choices that can impact the people you love. Although nursing homes and their caregivers provide quality care for those you love, one of the most troublesome choices you may face is the decision of when to place a loved one in a nursing home. Life’s important decisions need groundwork, and the decision to place a loved one in a nursing home is no different. Information and preparation can be extraordinarily helpful to make choices easier as you begin to take this important step in life.

San Joaquin County healthCare Guide

Sometimes an elderly loved one needs more help than is available at his or her own home. This can be a gradual process, as a person’s physical abilities and needs change over time, or an immediate need, like after an illness or surgery. The decision to place a loved one in a nursing home may be the answer for someone who: • Needs round-the-clock nursing care • Might wander away without supervision • Needs help with meals, bathing, personal care, medications, and moving around • Needs more help than the current caregiver can possibly give, or cannot live alone It can be a difficult decision to place a loved one in a nursing home. You may feel guilty, or that

you failed your loved one. But when you cannot give the level of care that your loved one needs, a nursing home is a good option for the professional and specialized care they provide. Because this is such an important step, if possible, you should include your loved one in the decision-making process, and remember to always be open, honest and supportive. It can be hard to know where to get good resources and information. The U.S. National Institutes of Health, National Institute on Aging (NIA) is an excellent resource to help you in your consideration. The information that follows is recommended by the NIA.

Where to Find Help Help is out there – you just need to ask. The people you surround

Another resource is your state’s Long-Term Care Ombudsman. Don’t be intimidated by the name. Each state has its own ombudsman, another name for a group that investigates problems or complaints about nursing homes. The ombudsman can provide you with details like the strengths and weaknesses of different nursing homes, and may have information about a nursing home’s latest state inspection and the number and types of complaints it received. The group can also advise you on what to look for when visiting nursing homes. The ombudsman cannot, however,

recommend one nursing home over another. You can find your state’s Long-Term Care Ombudsman through the NIA’s Eldercare Locator at www.eldercare.gov, or by calling (800) 677-1116. If your loved one is a military veteran, the Department of Veterans Affairs may be able to help. You can contact the VA medical center near you, visit www.va.gov, or call the VA for benefits information at (877) 222-8387.

Combatting the

FLU Story provided by Sutter Health-HealthWise Knowledge

What is the flu? Influenza (the “flu”) is a highly contagious viral infection of the nose, throat and lungs. It ranks as one of the most severe illnesses of the winter season.

How is it spread? Influenza is airborne and easily spread from person to person, primarily when an infected person coughs or sneezes. The virus is also transmitted by direct hand contact.

What are the symptoms? The typical influenza illness brings an abrupt onset of high fever, chills, a dry cough, headache, runny nose, sore throat and muscle and joint pain. Unlike other common respiratory infections, influenza can cause extreme fatigue that lasts several days to several weeks. • Wash your hands often, especially during winter months when the flu is most common. • Keep your hands away from your nose, eyes, and mouth. Viruses are most likely to enter your body through these areas. • Stop smoking. It irritates the lining of your nose, sinuses, and lungs, which may make you susceptible to complications of the flu. • Eat a healthy and balanced diet. • Get regular exercise.

Who should get the flu vaccine? In general, anyone who wants to reduce their chances of getting the flu should get a flu shot. People who should get vaccinated each year are: • Those at higher risk for complications from the flu: • People aged 65 or older • Residents of nursing homes or other chronic care facilities or housing • Adults and children 6 months or older with chronic diseases, including asthma and heart and lung disorders • Adults and children 6 months or older with conditions that suppress their immunity • People with any condition that can compromise respiratory function or the handling of respiratory secretions • All children aged 6-23 months • Pregnant women – if you are in your first trimester, check with your physician before receiving the flu shot • Children 6 months – 18 years of age who are on long-term aspirin therapy • People 50-64 years of age.
