new year is a time for transition. As exciting opportunities have revealed themselves, we have decided to retire The Current so we can pursue these new ventures with absolute focus and attention.

Editor Karen Bakhtegan

It is a bittersweet goodbye, as we took great pleasure in bringing you the stories of the people, places, and organizations that make our community so incredible. We met many great artists and writers, philanthropists and entrepreneurs, and ordinary people doing extraordinary things.

“SELFIE IN STOCKTON” by Jimi La Rock

Jimi LaRock

July 2016

Selfie in Stockton – April 2016 Eat an Apple – July 2016 Local artist Jimi La Rock was commissioned to create the cover for the first edition of The Current. His artwork perfectly captured the vision our team had in mind for the publication. “Selfie in Stockton” became the face (no pun intended) of The Current. Jimi’s art was not only featured on the April 2016 ARTBEAT edition, but it was also used for our entire marketing campaign and could be seen all over Stockton on billboards, mugs, T-shirts, banners, posters and more. We turned to Jimi once again for the July 2016 EAT edition cover. “Eat an Apple” was an existing piece of art in LaRock’s collection. We had to have it and he graciously obliged.

Into the Light – May 2016 Freelance artist Melissa Jazulin is the owner of Millie’s Art Korner in Stockton. When we saw her existing canvas painting “Into the Light,” we knew it was destined to be the cover of the SHE edition. “My goal is to for my students to know the rules, and break them as they see fit.” – Miss Millie

June 2016

Chris “Ginsu” Jones Hold Steady – June 2016 The HIM edition cover featured local artist and barber Chris “Ginsu” Jones. His “tattoo” style artwork could not have been a better fit. With its stylish simplicity, “Hold Steady” was the perfect first impression of the edition. “I have a passion for creating things, Sometimes they happen to be rad, sometimes not so much. It’s all in the eye of the beholder, right?” – Chris Jones 2016 june

COVER ART by Howard N. Binder 1

The very talented Howard N. Binder was the winner of The Current Cover Contest in December 2016. We loved his multimedia creation “Lady Rose” so much that we commissioned him to create a second cover for the BLACK edition. This incredibly gifted young artist did not disappoint. The words “glamorous” and “dignified” tend to come to mind when viewing Howard’s art. “I enjoy drawing and painting, and sharing my art with people.” – Howard N. Binder

N! , ACTIO CAMERA LIGHTS, rner by Rich Tu

1

It seemed only fitting that the cover for the FILM edition should be created using the medium it was named for. Lucky for us local artist Rich Turner’s tool of choice has always been a camera, and we could think of no one that has mastered the art of photography like Rich has. We knew Rich had captured some amazing shots from the set of Bound for Glory, a film that was shot here in Stockton in 1976. Rich granted us the honor of using one of them for our cover. The photo represented a photographer, using film, to capture a movie being filmed. How’s that for tying up an entire theme in one shot? That particular cover was magical. “Educating people about environmental issues is widely acknowledged to be a key factor in protecting the environment. What better medium to convey the beauty of our surroundings?” – Rich Turner

August

2017

Shaun Supnet Life’s Spectrum – August 2017 Local artist Shaun Supnet’s perfect and colorful design made a beautiful statement on our PRIDE edition. The abstract beauty of Shaun’s art leaves its interpretation up to the viewer. Shaun’s work becomes whatever the beholder happens to see in it. There is also something very hypnotizing and calming about Shaun’s designs. Or maybe that’s just how we see it! “I use art as a form of expression and a way to bring visualization to what is inside my mind and imagination. – Shaun Supnet printed on recycl ed paper

in motion T

he premiere edition of The Current, published March 20, 2016, featured the article “City on the Verge” by Jennifer Torres. It was an early peek into the very promising revitalization of downtown Stockton and the local people hell bent on making it happen. At the time, the Downtown Stockton Alliance had been tasked with…“advancing the vision of an 18-hour downtown. A place where people can browse a boutique, enjoy a meal, see a play, order a drink – and not just from 9 to 5, Monday through Friday.” Fast forward to today, and it is easy to see that their mission has not fallen by the wayside. The list of new businesses that have opened their doors since the article appeared is nothing short of impressive. While most would agree that we still have a long way to go before we can enjoy the vibrant and thriving downtown Stockton that we all dream about, one cannot deny that if the momentum of the past 2 years continues to build as it has, our humble downtown may just become a true destination city center in no time.
